Chapter 16
Evening came upon us. Fifteen of us waited in the dining hall, waiting for Kirumi to finish making dinner. I couldn't help but be fueled with anger. That damn bear, how on Earth could he do something like that to Kiyo? He was executed because of Monokuma in the first time line! Because of him, the killing game continued. Dammit!
I was biting at my thumb, growling lightly to myself. "Kokichi, you okay?" Gonta asked, looking across from me. I quickly released my thumb from my mouth and put on a smile.
"Yeah, I'm fine. I'm just really hungry is all." I replied. "Well you won't have to wait much longer," Kirumi replied with a giggle, entering the room with trays of food, "Dinner is ready."
"Yipeeee!" I said as I served my own plate. Once everyone got their food, Angie, who sat next to me, placed her hands together and closed her eyes.
"Ah yes. Thank you, great Atua, for preparing this food to all of us. Our mouths shall be blessed and our stomachs will be full thanks to you." she said. I gave her an annoyed glare. "Uh-huh, how bout you thank the real cook for once." I said, gesturing to Kirumi. The Ultimate Maid put on a small smile and took her seat.
"No, I do not need any praise." she said.
"But you work hard to make us food every day, and Angie keeps saying its Atua who deserves all the credit." I said.
"That is because he does deserve all the credit." Angie corrected. I crossed my arms across my chest, raising a brow. "So you're saying Atua is allowed to take credit for other people's work?" I said.
"Are you again questioning Atua's power?" Angie asked with an edge in her voice. We shot glares at each other, and I swear there were sparks between us. Kaede put on a nervous expression.
"O-Okay, let's not start a scene." she said.
"Yeah, bickering isn't going to get you guys anywhere." Kaito said. Angie puffed up her cheeks, and turned away from me, nose held high. "Well then maybe this lower life form should know better then to question the power of the mighty Atua." she stated. "Oh yeah? What's the worst he can do to me? Make me more like you?" I said. That made Angie actually growl, and she slammed her hand down by my plate.
"You will be silent! I have had enough of your insults!"
"Then maybe your precious Atua should stop me."
"I promise you he will crush you with his might!"
"Looking forward to it!"
"Both of say another word and I'll make you quiet....permanently." Maki stated, eyes glowing red. Her words made the whole table freeze, but Angie and I sighed.
"Fine, I won't say another word," I said, then looked up at Kiyo, "help a guy out here, Kiyo. You're the culture expert here. What's your opinion on Atua?" I asked. Kiyo looked at me surprised. Angie's eyes widened, and suddenly he gaze was fixed on Kiyo, full of what looked like.....hope. Not sure what she was hoping for though. Approval maybe? I mean, Kiyo is her crush.
Kiyo placed a hand on his cheek, closing his eyes as he gathered his thoughts. "My opinion on Atua? I gather that is what you wish for me to explain." he said, and I nodded.
"Very well. I'm afraid I lack knowledge of Atua, and his effect on his followers, so a proper opinion on him specifically would not be appropriate. In all honesty, I have never been one to depend on or look up to a god. Of course I have no problem with anyone who have religious beliefs. However, I will say this. No one should solely rely upon any god for everything, nor should they give a god complete credit of other people's actions. For example, if someone were to commit a crime, they mustn't say they are doing it in God's name. I'm afraid it just isn't logical. That is what I believe." Kiyo explained.
We all looked at him in shock, stunned by his words. Angie, suddenly speechless, sat down in her seat, and began to nibble at her food.
"Well that happened...." I thought, then shrugged and began to eat at my food. Suddenly however, the monitor turned on, revealing the Monokubs.
"Hello everyone! Is everyone having a good night?" Monophanie asked.
"Well don't, you shitheads! This isn't a vacation! This is a game of survival, betrayal, and death! So get your damn game faces on, you motherfuckers!" Monokid shouted.
"Yes, we are all growing quite bored from the lack of action. So, our father has put together another motive for you guys." Monosuke said.
"There's a bomb in the academy! And it's gonna go off when nighttime comes! That's an hour from now." Monotaro replied. Kaito and Miu both gagged, almost choking on their food before their eyes widened.
"Did they say a bomb-"
"HAVE-A-NICE-NIGHT." Monodam replied. Then the TV screen shut off. We all looked to each other, caught off guard by the sudden announcement.
"There's a bomb in the academy?! Oh geez, how do we find that in an hour?!" Tenko cried. "We weren't even given a clue on where to start searching." Keebo said. I felt my Monopad vibrate behind me, so I pulled it out and looked it over.
"We are given a clue. It's on our Monopads." I said. Everyone whipped out their Monopads to look over the information. The message said this.
"As you all know, a bomb is in the academy. And you need to find it. Don't worry, we have provided a clue for you on its location, so you won't be entirely clueless. Hope you like riddles!
Tainted green tightness
White cloth wrapping round veins
Mask of darkness
Knowledge beyond comprehension
Good luck!
- Monokuma"
Needless to say, the clue didn't do jack shit for us. "What the hell kind of clue is this?! This doesn't tell us a fucking thing!" Miu stated. "I don't remember seeing a place like this. I can't think of anything that might match this description." Rantaro said.
Honestly, I had no idea either. And that scared me. How the hell are we supposed to stop a bomb that super quickly like that? "Does anyone have any idea?" Ryoma asked. Kaede looked to Shuichi.
"Do you have any ideas, Shuichi? You are the Ultimate Detective." she said.
"I can't say for sure. None of these clues make sense. The only thing I can really come up with is some sort of library, considering the last part of the riddle 'knowledge beyond comprehension' but otherwise, I can't think of anything." Shuichi explained.
"But there are a few places with a lot of books. There's the actual library, yes, but there's also Kiyo's lab and Shuichi's lab." Tsumugi said.
"Where do we start searching then?" Himiko asked. Kaito suddenly stood up. "Anywhere is a good start. I say we search the whole academy, top to bottom. I know there's only an hour, but there's also sixteen of us. We can probably split up and search in only a half that time and find the bomb!" he stated.
"I don't understand something. Why would this be a motive? What good would it do for Monokuma to blow us up?" Kirumi asked. Kiyo looked at his Monopad, his eyes narrowing.
"I believe the second part of the message should answer that question." he stated. We all again hurried to look at our Monopads.
"Oh, by the way, if you don't want to wait until the bomb goes kaboom, then I suggest one of you spills a little blood. Otherwise, I'm not deactivating the bomb.
-Monokuma"
"Well that's just peachy." I muttered.
"I didn't think he would be this desperate for us to participate in the killing game." Maki said. "This is Monokuma we're talking about, of course he's that desperate," I stated, getting to my feet, "but despite his craziness, we have to find that bomb. I don't like the idea of just randomly searching the academy, but right now that seems to be our best bet."
"We have nothing to worry." we all turned to Angie, who wore a bright smile.
"Atua tells me we have nothing to fear. He says the bomb will not explode, so we should not stress over it." she said.
"Oh yeah? Well, I'm not relying on a god to protect us. So, we should split up into teams." I said.
"Right," Shuichi said, "Ryoma and Kirumi, you guys look around the pool area. Kaito and Maki, the courtyard. Rantaro and Tsumugi, the basement. Angie-"
"Kokichi and I will check the third and fourth floors." Angie stated in a cheery tone. I looked at her surprised. She said what now? That we search together? Did I not just piss her off a few minutes ago or what? And suddenly she just decides to go investigating with me? What's her game.....
"That okay with you, Kokichi?" Shuichi asked. As suspicious as I felt about this, we didn't exactly have the time to spend.
"That's fine with me."
* * * *
Angie hummed happily as we both walked down the hallway, heading to Angie's lab. She said that it should be the first place to look. Deciding to play along, I followed her to her lab.
"How the hell can you be so cheery? I mean, a bomb is in the academy. And we only have that crappy clue as a lead." I said.
"But but, Atua says there is nothing to fear. Like he said, the bomb will not go off." Angie replied.
"Does he say why it won't go off?" I asked. She didn't reply. She just opened the door to her lab and stepped aside, gesturing for me to enter first. I glanced at her before entering the room. As I looked around the room, I heard her close the door behind her....and lock it. Then she walked over to the other door, locking it as well. I narrowed my eyes at her, taking my gaze off her for only a moment to look at the other door.
"Okay, you're officially creeping me out. Wanna tell me why you wanted to investigate with me," I asked, slowly turning to face her, "especially after I insulted your precious Atua-" I stopped dead in my tracks the moment Angie picked up a wooden hammer from one of her shelves.
"A-Angie?"
"Do not fear.....Atua is all wise and powerful. As long as we do what he says, everything will be alright." she said. She lifted her gaze so that she would be looking into my eyes.....her blue eyes filled with a crazed look to them.
"Angie." I repeated, taking a step back. She took a step forward.
"And right now.....Atua says to kill you."
