Orion
Sahara had never expected things in the city to become like this the further in she went. While she had seen many boarders at the moonlight gathering, this was different. There were stands all around, lights lit up the streets, teens ran around, selling things, laughing, and boarding in various dangerous ways. It was like one large party with violence mixed into it.
To her horror, Sahara saw at least three fights break out. If it was between crews or just disagreeing teens, she wasn't sure. However, they were really going at each other with their fists.
Neither the twins, nor Alegra, seemed in the least bit bothered. They just continued boarding, going further into the city. Sahara followed, trying to not herself get distracted by all the happenings around her. It was getting harder to avoid people when the twins finally pulled to a stop and hopped off their boards.
"What do you think?" Reagan asked Sahara with a grin. He had to yell to be heard over the noise.
"There's...a lot of people," Sahara replied as she looked around in awe.
"You could say that," Arden agreed. "But you should go to the city center one day. Now that's a lot of people."
"No funny business either," Reagan added. "Rayne's got things pretty under control there. A lot more things are still functioning there, technology wise."
"So," Alegra was looking around casually. "What's the plan?"
Arden and Reagan look at each other.
"I mean, I'm sure you don't want to just grab some random person." She paused as she shot a glare at a group of guys who whistled at her. They laughed at her reaction.
"Well...we could just ask around," Arden suggested.
Alegra snorted.
Sahara got off her board.
"That's how we joined," Reagan told Alegra.
"Whatever," Alegra walked towards another group of guys.
"Where are you going?" Arden called after her.
Alegra turned her head to glance over her shoulder. "You want to find someone? Fine, do it your way. I'll try it my way. Let's see who wins."
Reagan and Arden glanced at each other.
"A competition!" they said at the same time looking equally excited.
"Let's win this," Arden told his brother. They high fived before dashing off towards a group of teens.
"Um..." Sahara tried. However, it seemed like they had forgotten her. Helplessly, she turned. She was just in time to see Alegra had approached the guys. She seemed to be flirting with them. From where she stood, Sahara witnessed the girl getting particular close to one guy. While he was completely concentrating on her, Sahara saw Alegra reach into his pocket and pull out some object. She slipped it into her own without any of the guys noticing.
Sahara shook her head. Looks like she's still at it. She turned to see that the twins had disappeared completely.
With a sigh, Sahara decided she would try to be helpful by looking around for someone too. She switched off her board and tucked it under one arm before walking out from the middle of the path where boarders were zooming through constantly.
She paused by a stand, staring in surprise as the 3D images of animals. A miniature golden retriever was looking right at her and wagging its tail playfully. When Sahara moved, his eyes followed her.
"Interested?" a guy asked as he realized Sahara was showing attention to the objects. "If you're looking for a pet, these are the best on the market." He picked up the small bracelet from which the golden retriever's hologram was coming. "He likes you," he commented.
To Sahara's surprise when the guy pressed something the dog became life-sized. He barked happily as he ran a circle around her and then sat in front of her, still wagging his tail. Sahara reached out to touch him. Her hand went right through.
"I'll even throw in a frisbee for free," the guy wasn't put off. He pressed a button and a hologram of a frisbee appeared. He made a motion with his hands and it flew across the street. Sahara watched in wonder as, with a bark, the hologram of the dog sprang after it.
He ran right through a group of teens, who didn't even seem bothered, as he followed the frisbee. The frisbee itself flew through a boarder before it began to descend. Sahara saw the dog jump and catch before he turned and ran back to her. He dropped the frisbee at her feet, tail still wagging.
"You can even get him in any color," the guy trying to sell him told her.
In the next few seconds the dog before Sahara turned every color. One moment he was pink, blue, black, brown, yellow, orange, and then he was a whole assortment of colors at once.
"He even comes in disco," as he said it the dog began to shine light all around like a disco ball. "So..." Sahara jumped as the guy slung an arm around her shoulder. "You interested." He leaned closer.
"Whoa!" Some grabbed the guy's arm and removed it from Sahara's shoulder. "Way too close!" It was Arden.
From where he stood, Reagan nodded as he formed an 'x' across his chest with his arms.
"Hey, I was just trying to..." the guy began.
"No can do," Arden shook his head. He turned Sahara around and began to push her away. "You don't want one. Trust me. They're not what they used to be. Now they last about a week and then they die. Reagan would know. He had five of them in a row. What were they again?" He paused. "A dog, bird, horse, wolf, and...hey Reagan, what was that last one? The cat who barked?" He turned around only to see his twin was peering at the holograms.
"You don't happen to have any limited additions of Serina, do you?" Reagan was asking the guy there hopefully.
"Reagan!" Arden called.
Reluctantly, Reagan turned around and trotted over to join the two. "So where do we start?" he ask
ed as he slung and arm casually around Sahara.
"Uh..." Sahara found both twins waiting for her answer. "Why are you asking me?"
Reagan and Arden looked at each other in surprise.
"You're the leader, aren't you?" Reagan asked her.
"Since it's your crew, where should we start looking for a member?" Arden added.
Sahara looked around. "How about them?" She pointed at a large group of teens.
"Good choice," Reagan told her.
Before Sahara could blink, both he and his brother had hurried over to the group. She watched them ask something. No one in the group seemed to be listening, yet neither twin gave up. Suddenly, one guy in the group turned to Reagan, anger written on his face as he said something. Reagan grinned. He backed off, holding his hands out to show he didn't want to start a fight.
Both he and Arden bounded back to Sahara much like the golden retriever had done before.
"Well, they certainly aren't interested," Reagan informed her.
"What about them?" Arden asked as he pointed at someone else.
Before Sahara knew what was happening, both twins were off again. In the next few moments, she watched them run from one group to the other, never put off from trying again when they were turned down.
"You alone?" someone asked.
Sahara turned around to find a guy watching her. He looked somewhat familiar, yet she couldn't place his face.
"It's you!" the guy exclaimed. Obviously he recognized her. "Hey, Danton!" he turned to a group of teens lounging around a building behind him. "This is that crazy chick I was telling you about who was asking people to join her crew!"
Sahara realized he must have been someone at the moonlight gathering.
"So," the guy turned back to Sahara, a grin on his face. "How's it coming along?"
Feeling uncomfortable, Sahara shot a look around for the twins. They were nowhere in sight. "It's okay," she said carefully.
"Hmmm...that's unexpected," the guy murmured. "I'm guessing you haven't found a full crew though." He put an arm on Sahara's shoulder and she stiffened, uncomfortable at the touch. "How about you join our group?" He nodded to the teens behind him.
Sahara peeked around him. She saw one guy who was sitting with a girl who had her head in his lap while he fondled her hair. Another two guys stood nearby looking uninterested. To her surprise, they each had what looked like hologram cigarettes in their mouths from which real smoke was coming.
Another guy was flirting with a girl nearby. There was one more, yet he was sitting so far in the shadows she couldn't make out anything.
"Hey!" someone broke the guy's grip on Sahara's shoulder.
She looked up to see the twins were back.
"Seriously, every time we aren't looking another one's near you," Reagan told Sahara as he clucked his tong in disapproval.
"Who are you?" the guy, who had been talking with Sahara, asked rudely.
Reagan turned to him in surprise. "Who are we?" he asked. "Who are we?" He shot a look at his twin. "Arden, this guy's asking who we are!"
Arden wasn't listening. He was scanning the group behind the guy.
"I think the question here is what were you doing to Sahara?" Reagan told the guy as he turned back to him.
"Hey," the guy raised his hands. "I was just asking her if she wanted to join..."
"She's not interested," Arden told him firmly. Sahara was surprised by the fact that all sense of humor seemed to have disappeared from his face. Her surprise rose when Arden took a step in front of her, putting himself between her and the guy.
"You got a problem here?" the guy asked. The smile had disappeared from his face and he suddenly looked anything but friendly.
Sahara noticed a group behind him get up and walk over towards them. The guys with the cigarettes made a motion and which made the cigarettes disappear into seemingly thin air.
"We both know you're real intentions here," Arden told the guy. He wasn't backing down.
The guy scoffed as he looked Arden up and down. Sahara wondered if she was missing something. What are they going on about? she wondered as she felt the tension in the air.
"And why would you say that?" the guy asked as the others behind him drew closer. The only one who hadn't moved was the one in the shadows.
"It takes one look to figure it out," Arden replied. The two guys were right up in each other's face.
"Hey, whoa...hold on a minute." Reagan was eager to try and keep the peace. He pushed his brother to the side. "You guys don't happen to want to join a crew, do you? We've got some spots open..."
"Are you kidding me?" the guy shoved Reagan hard to the side.
It was the wrong thing to do as this action seemed to anger Arden. He let out an angry growl, his fists clenching. "Apologize," he demanded.
"Uh...guys..." Sahara wasn't sure how this situation had arisen, nor what it really was about.
"There a problem here?" the guys had come up to support the other.
"Yeah," the guy who had shoved Reagan nodded. "There's just some people who don't seem to know their place."
"What's going on here?" Sahara asked Reagan when he straightened up.
Reagan shook his head. "I don't know why you were talking to them...but this is a bad crowd."
"Apologize," Arden repeated.
"Huh?" one of the guys asked.
"You're really getting on my nerves," the guy whom Arden was talking to added.
"How do you know they're a bad crowd?" Sahara whispered to Reagan. "He seemed pretty nice to me."
Reagan shook his head.
"I said apologize," Arden repeated.
"Buzz off!" the guy yelled. Sahara watched in horror as his fist flew through the air towards Arden. However, to her surprise, Arden simply ducked, avoiding the blow altogether. The guy who had thrown the punch looked surprised too. He followed up with another. This time, it looked like it would connect with Arden's face. Inches before it, a hand flew out and caught it, stopping it. It was Reagan.
He too, suddenly no longer seemed in a joking mood. It was as if he and his brother had completely transformed in a second; a danger radiated from the both of them.
"His face is my face. So if you punch him, you punch me," Reagan told the guy before he followed up with his own punch. He hit the guy square across the face and he went stumbling back. His friends caught him.
"Nice one," Arden commented.
"You..." the guy growled as he looked up. He had a cut across his nose. The guys around him moved forward as one, their stance clearly showing they were ready to attack.
Sahara took a few steps back. Why on earth is this happening?
The twins reacted by standing side by side. Reagan raised his fists while Arden waited, his eyes cold and calculating.
"What do you think?" Reagan asked.
"I'll take the ones on the right, you take the left," Arden replied.
"Sounds good to me."
Someone stop them! Sahara thought in horror. She looked around for anyone who could help, however, no one seemed interested.
"You're so dead," one of the guys growled before they all rushed forward.
They were about to clash when a sleek black board shot out of seemingly nowhere. Rider-less, it passed right between them. Everyone froze.
"What are you doing?" a familiar voice asked.
All eyes turned to the direction of the voice. Sahara felt relief wash through her when she saw Terrell standing there. Once again he was wearing a hood so that his face was not clearly visible. However, the jacket was sleeveless so she easily recognized him the tattoo on his arm.
"Who are you?" one of the guys asked.
Terrell didn't reply as he walked towards them. The closer he got, the more uncertain the guys seemed to become. Sahara realized why, for there was something about Terrell's presence at that moment that was overpowering.
"Hey, want to join the party?" Reagan asked. He was suddenly relaxed and once again cheerful.
Terrell ignored him. He came to stand before the guys as he motioned for his board to return to him. "These guys weren't bothering you, were they?" He asked it in such a way that made Sahara shiver. For his voice suggested that he was only expecting one answer.
"Actual..." the guy who had been punched began.
However, another cut him off. "No, we were just talking."
"Well it looks to me like the conversation is over," Terrell told them.
To Sahara's surprise, they didn't argue. Instead, they turned and walked away while grumbling. The only who paused to glare at the twins was the one Reagan had punched. After a moment he, too, followed the others. The girls joined them as they left.
"You really don't want to join our crew?" Reagan tried one last time.
His reply was a few glares.
Reagan wasn't about to be put off. He turned to the guy who had sat into the shadows until then. "You interested?" he asked.
The guy didn't reply. Instead he got up and began to walk away.
"See that punch?" Reagan asked Sahara as he turned to her. "We aren't the blockers for nothing." He grinned. "We can take hits just as well as we can dish them out," he boasted.
As Terrell began to leave too, Sahara turned. "Terrell!" she called. He paused.
The guy from the shadows paused at the sound of the name. He turned to shot a glance at Terrell's back. For a moment, he simply watched. Then, he walked towards the twins. As he came closer, his features became visible for the first time. He was tall. His hair was black and styled so that it almost fell over his eyes.
He was wearing a pair of glasses, the first person Sahara had seen in Regona to do so, and there was something about his eyes which gave a person the feeling that this guy could read your mind.
"How many more spots are open?" he asked.
Arden and Reagan exchanged glances.
"One," Arden told him.
"You interested?"Reagan asked eagerly.
The guy pushed his glasses up on his nose. "Any other applications?"
"You're the first," it was Terrell who spoke. He had come back to join the twins. Unlike the two, he was more cautious. He looked the guy over. "Why are you interested?" he asked with open suspicion.
"Have you met those guys?" the guy asked sarcastically as he nodded towards the disappearing group.
"Then why were you with them?" Arden asked curiously.
Sahara watched the entire exchange silently.
The guy shrugged. "Waiting for something interesting to happen."
"And you think that'll happen around us?" Terrell caught on right away.
For a moment the guy simply stared at him. "Yes," he finally said.
Terrell lifted a finger and pointed it at Sahara without looking at her. "She's the leader." He said. And then, he added something which surprised Sahara. "She can't board." All the while he watched for the guy's reaction.
"Interesting," the guy once again pushed his glasses up. A smile spread across his face. "Can I join?"
"Sahara?" Arden asked.
She found all the guys had turned to face her.
"Um..." she was still at a loss of everything that had happened in the last few moments; from the twins almost fighting to Terrell turning up and then this guy suddenly turning up. She mutely nodded.
"Welcome to the club!" Reagan thumped him on the back. The guy didn't look amused.
"What's your name?" Terrell asked.
"Orion," was the reply he got.
Like the constellation? Sahara wondered.
"Arden, Reagan, Sahara," Terrell pointed at each one as he said it. "Let me just warn you..."
"Hey, as long as things are interesting, I won't cause any trouble," Orion told him.
"Ahhh!" a frustrated voice broke in as Alegra trudged over. "Why!"
"Didn't find anyone?" Reagan asked with a grin. "Cause we just found one."
Alegra glared at him. "One? I wish....Actually, I found twelve."
Sahara blinked in surprise.
"Well...where are they?" Arden asked.
"I don't want to know," Alegra shuddered. "They all wanted to get way to close to me. It took me ages to get rid of them and convince them we didn't want another member after al..." she froze as she caught sight of Terrell. "What are you doing here?"
Terrell shrugged.
"Where's Naomi?" Alegra voice's voice was dangerously low.
Terrell's eyes widened. "The twerp!" He whirled around. "She was right behind me!"
"You lost her!" Alegra was freaking out.
"She probably just went to chat with some guys, like you do!" Terrell tried.
"She's six!"
Orion was watching the exchange with a look which showed he had neither expected it, nor was he sure of what was going on.
"And why isn't she in bed!" Alegra added.
Terrell took a step back. "Have you tried to get that kid to sleep?"
"Yes! And it works every time!"
"Well...not with me!" Terrell defended himself. "Besides, she wanted to come see you..."
"Alegra!" Naomi rushed over from the other side of the street.
Sahara let out a sigh of relief as the little girl ran into Alegra's arms and hugged her. Alegra held her while shooting a glare at Terrell. For the first time she seemed to notice Orion. "Who are you?" she asked.
"Our newest member!" Reagan told her as he put his elbow on Orion's shoulder and leaned on him. Arden mimicked him on the other side. "Alegra, this is Orion, Orion, this is Alegra," Reagan introduced the two.
Alegra watched with narrowed eyes. Then, they suddenly widened. "You!" she gasped.
Orion's eyes widened somewhat too.
The twins looked from one to the other.
"You two know each other?" Terrell asked.
"No..." Alegra let go of Naomi and got up. Her eyes were guarded.
"We've only briefly met a few years back," Orion explained. Neither he nor Alegra looked like they wanted to discuss it.
"Well, that should make things easier," Arden beamed. Reagan nodded in agreement.
Alegra didn't look like she agreed. However, she said nothing more to the matter. "What is it, Naomi?" she asked. The little girl had been tugging on her shirt.
"Look," the little girl beamed as she held up a bracelet which looked all too familiar. "Terrell bought it for me," Naomi said proudly.
Alegra looked closer at the bracelet. "You bought her a hologram pet?" she asked. Somehow, she didn't look too pleased.
"It was the only to get her to stop talking," Terrell muttered.
"Cool, a pet!" Reagan looked excited.
Alegra's face, however, was filled with suspicion. "Just what pet did you buy her?"
Terrell shrugged. "I don't know. She picked it out. The seller said something about them all being life sized and all that. Maybe she got a cat so that she can leave Mo alone."
Alegra still didn't look convinced. "Naomi, honey," she said as she kneeled down by the little girl. "What animal did you chose?"
A large smile spread over Naomi's face. "A whale!"
Alegra looked like she was ready to faint.
