Sun and Moon

Mook and Gang Ho loved going to the Kim Cafe after that day. Hyun did intimidate them, but the food was too good to avoid! After they got the hand of using the light to cross the street, the cafe became a daily routine for the two as they waited for Aru to finish her last class of the day. In the beginning, Mook and Gang Ho would not exchange any words. They wouldn't even share a glance at each other. That eventually changed as they tried to at least introduce each other for Aru's sake. That's when Mook realized that Gang Ho isn't as intimidating as he initially thought. That's when Gang Ho realized that Mook wasn't a bad guy. In fact, Mook's company was quite enjoyable to have around.

Mook was on his way to the Kim Cafe. He was by himself for a change. He would usually have Gang Ho with him, but he had a study group to attend to. Mook didn't mind going by himself, Mrs. Kim was very kind and sweet. As Mook pushed open the doors to the cafe, his cheeks flushed at the warmth that radiated from the small building. The fall days were slowly becoming colder, signaling the winter that would soon arrive. Mook had never been in snow, so he had no idea how cold it was going to be in the city.

"Mook! Good afternoon! You're all alone?"

"Yes ma'am. Aru is still in her math class. Gang Ho is attending a study group."

Mrs. Kim nodded and smiled as she traded places with Hyun, leaving him on register duty. She ushered Mook over to the employees only section, giving Hyun a sharp glare. Mook bowed at Hyun before following the short, stern mother into the back. As he put the two containers of soup and two bottles of water in his bag, Mrs. Kim noticed that the young boy didn't have a jacket.

"Mook, where is your jacket? It's getting really cold outside! You'll catch a cold!"

"Oh, I don't own a winter jacket. It's okay though, I'm sure I can handle it! Have a nice day ma'am!"

With that, Mook left the startled Mrs. Kim in the kitchen. He slightly bowed to Hyun, who had just finished placing an order. Hyun sighed and nodded in his direction before turning back to the next customer in line. Mook was slightly shocked at the gesture, but walked outside either way. The cold air quickly greeted, making him wonder if he really was able to withstand the dropping temperatures. Shaking his worries away, he made his way back to the campus. He noticed Aru in the distance, and happily began to pick up his pace. Then, he stopped in his place.

Just as Aru was going to head down the sidewalk, two other people stepped in. A short girl around Aru's height laughed loudly as she slung an arm around Aru's shoulder. The other way a bit taller. Mook couldn't really tell the gender due to the distance, but that didn't matter. He watched in silence as Aru smiled brightly at the two strangers. He heard the angelic laugh that brightened his day. However, this time was different. He felt a heavy weight on his chest instead of the warmth he usually felt when he heard her laugh. A part of him wanted to march on up to her and let her know he was there, the other part wanted to disappear. He decided to go with the second choice.

Pushing aside the heavy weight on his chest, Mook turned on his heel and headed straight to the rooftop. As he entered the space, he took his shoes off on the shoe rack. The roof was much more comfortable now that he and Aru worked on it. It had a couch that turned into a bed with blankets and pillows for naps. They had a mini fridge and small food cabinet set up for snack times. They had a secured border for windy days and shelter for rainy ones. It was their little escape.Sitting on the rug with his bags next to him, Mook grumbled as he stared off at the sky. Then, he heard the entrance open up.

"Hey Mook!"

Aru clumsily climbed onto the roof, nearly falling on her face as she landed on the ground. Not letting the smile on her face disappear, she took her shoes off and joined Mook's side on the rug. Grabbing a blanket and wrapping herself with it, she asked Mook how his day was. He gave her the standard reply, but she felt as if something was wrong with him. When she was about to ask him, however, she noticed the frustrated look on his face. He wasn't in the mood to talk about it, and she wasn't going to begin push the subject.

Instead, she asked about how her mother and brother were doing. Mook smiled and proudly told her how he went all the way to the cafe without anyone to accompany him. That's when he remembered the soup. Aru places the blanket around him as he got out the soup and water. He noticed that Aru no longer had the blanket around her and frowned. He sighed as she kept refusing to take the blanket back, she had a coat after all. Mook thought for a while before putting the blanket around Aru so that they could share the warmth. Content, they both opened their containers and ate their little hearts away.

All of a sudden, Mook remembered the two strangers. He peered at the small girl next to him as she ate her mother's soup with happiness. She looked so bright and content, it was a wonderful sight. His lips pressed tightly together before relaxing. Taking a slight breath, he called her name. He hesitated when she turned to face him.

"Yes Mook?"

Her eyes were filled with beautiful wonder as she looked at him. The kindness and curiously in her voice made his heart flip out. The fact that he was able to be around her without being a bother amazed him.

"We're friends...right?"

"Hm...no."

Mook's heart dropped as he turned away from the small girl. Sadness filled his eyes and his heart. Of course, who would want to friends with a depressing person? He already understood the reasons that she might tell him.

"No...I'd say that were best friends at this point, right?"

Mook's eyes widened as he quickly turned to Aru. She sat there, her bright smile in his view again. He noticed that she held up two necklaces that were joined together. The sun and the moon. The carefully took them apart and handed him the golden chain with the moon attached to it. He gently took it in his hands and examined it.

"They're a set. I figured you could have the moon and I can have the sun! What do you think?"

Mook softly smiled and looked at her.

"How about...you have the moon and I have the sun? That way, we always have a piece of each other with us."

Aru blinked before smiling, little giggles escaping her mouth. She agreed to his idea and traded the sun for the moon. She carefully put it on around her neck and smiled at Mook before helping him put his on. The two finished eating their soup with content, sitting a little closer to each other than before.
