First Meeting
It was a Sunday morning in Beach City. It was nearly noon, and the Kim Cafe was quiet and empty, churches were still in service and people were still in bed at their homes. Mrs. Kim was in the back, making fresh baked goods for the customers that they were anticipating to come soon. Hyun was on register and counter duty, taking orders and making drinks. As the sun's warm rays greeted the world through the windows, two familiar students walked through the doors.
Mook and Aru were patiently waiting for their friends to arrive at the cafe, so they decided to just go inside and find a decent seat for the group. Hyun turned and eyed the two as he helped the very few customers present, but it was more of a playful manner than it was a threat. He didn't want to admit it, but his sister's friends had grown on him. He enjoyed having them around, they were kind and funny. He was skeptical at first, but now he can't imagine how quiet his days would be if they weren't always with his sister.
It took about twenty minutes, but Xena finally walked into the cafe and towards Mook and Aru. She seemed to be talking to someone on the phone, something that surprised Hyun and Aru due to the fact that Xena hardly ever made phone calls. Susu and Gang Ho followed close behind the short girl, mumbling jokes to each other. The five spent the rest of their morning in the cafe, chatting and letting each other know of any life updates. When it came time for lunch, they all pitched in to pay for the meals. They stayed for another thirty minutes before they were kicked out by an aggravated Hyun. Laughing, Xena invited everyone to go hang out at the beach with her. Everyone accepted her invitation. Everyone, that is, except for Mook. He stated that he needed to go study for an upcoming test. Assuring everyone that he would be fine, he waved and departed from the group.
He really wished that we could have gone with them. Just imagining how much fun they were having without him made him upset. But he knew better than to risk it. One splash of water could ruin everything. His relationships, his happiness, everything. Trying to take his mind off of his fear, he decided to go and stock groceries for him and Gang Ho. As he was walking down the road, he was frozen by a familiar voice.
"Mook! I didn't expect to run into you like this! Why aren't you on campus?"
Mook quickly turned to looked to his side, eyes widening.
"Mother? What are you doing here?"
Mook couldn't believe it. His mother was there in front of him in the city. She smiled as she pulled her son into a hug. Pulling away, she began to explain herself.
"I know you don't like me mentioning him, but it's related to your father."
Mook began to turn away, only to be stopped by his mother.
"Hear me out. He had another son and wife, but the woman somehow mysteriously died. You're father went missing as well, so, well, I just had to help."
"Mother, what are you saying?"
"The boy has no where to go, Mook. So, I offered to take him in. We're going to watch him until we can find out what exactly happened."
"Are you sure that this is the best thing?"
"He lost his mother, I couldn't leave him to struggle alone! Besides, the university has also invited him to attend. I came to drop him off and introduce you two to each other."
Mook stiffened as a boy around his age and height walked out from behind his mother. He wasn't sure if he wanted to help this boy settle down, but he did anyways. It meant a lot to his mother, so it meant a lot to him. Swallowing away his doubts, he stuck out his hand to the new boy.
"I'm Mook, a pleasure to meet you."
The boy eyed Mook and his hand before taking it in his own, giving it a firm shake.
"I'm Dante. Hello Mook, looks like we're brothers now."
Mook's eyes darted to the side as his mother engulfed both him and Dante in a group hug. Stating that she had work to do back home, she wished both boys good luck and went off to the bus station. Mook sighed, looking at Dante through his peripheral vision. Maybe having a brother wouldn't be so bad.
"Come on Dante. Let's take you to the registration office. Then, we'll go somewhere else. I'll take your bags."
Grabbing Dante's suitcases and bags, Mook made his way to the school with Dante following behind him. He waited in the hall as Dante got registered and situated.
"Hey Mook, let's drop my stuff off at my dorm before going any further."
Mook nodded and looked at Dante's room number. He quietly sucked in a small breath and prayed that Gang Ho wouldn't mind another roommate.
"Looks like you room with me. Let's get going."
After Dante got his room and things situated with the help of Mook, the two made their way outside. Mook gave brief descriptions of every building and classes within the buildings. Then, the two brothers left the campus grounds. Mook explained that students were encouraged to make their own meals, so he was off to get groceries for the dorm. When they arrived to the store, Mook watched in amazement as Dante stared in awe, discovering new things left and right.
Maybe Dante would be the only good thing that came from that horrid father of his.
