It was a quiet morning. The sun had not yet risen from its slumber. A light breeze was present outside as the residents were just now waking for their 3 am shifts. Everyone else was sleeping in peace. Everyone who wasn't Aru Kim. Laying in her bed was the 19 year old Aru Kim. She was having the worst nightmare of her life that night. As she thrashed around and whined, a bright white flame appeared above her head. It hovered for a second before turning bright blue and then flew out the window. It went into the sky and traveled all the way to a beach side city. It went into the open window of an elegant being who kindly took the flame. Smiling, they spoke with care and ease.
"Miss Kim, I certainly do hope you're ready."
In an instant, the flame turned into a letter and threw itself out the window. It began its journey back to the Kim residence. It swiftly flew into the family room just as the family began to get up for the day. The letter gently landed on the coffee table just as Mrs. Kim walked in to start on breakfast. Up in her room, Aru just fell out of bed. Still frantic from her nightmare, she pushed past her brother in the hall and ran into the restroom. She splashed her face with cold water and took deep breathes. She exclaimed herself in the mirror before taking the roller out of her hair.
"It was just a nightmare..."
"Just like looking at you."
Aru turned around to see her older brother, Hyun, snickering and her in the doorway. She rolled her eyes and threw her hair roller at him, hitting his face. As she walked back to her room, she heard her brother call out after her from the bathroom.
"And will you please stop it with all that cosplay crap? That scratch on the back of your neck looks cool and all but, I'm tired of having a dweeb as a little sister."
Aru froze, eyes widening as she felt the scar on her neck with her hand. She screamed and ran into her room. She pulled out her cosplay drawer and snatched up every type of make up remover and wipe she owned. She quickly sat and positioned herself to where she could easily see her neck. She began to shake as she tried to wipe it off with no avail. She gasped as she froze up, suddenly, remembering a bit of the nightmare she had that night. She dropped her wipe and held her head as a surge of pain appeared. Gasping, she held her neck and walked back into the wall.
"This scar......it's just like...the one from my dream."
Aru shook her head and got ready, hoping this was just a cruel prank made by her annoying brother. Once she had calmed down, she brushed her hair and went downstairs into the kitchen, greeting her mother. Unknown to her, the letter began to grow uneasy.
~ ~ ~
"Momma, give me a break..."
"I will not give you a break! You graduated from high school a month ago! Yet, you have not received a single acceptance letter! We already have your deadbeat brother home! First you can't properly give an application to any college or university anywhere! Now our rent and money is running dry! How am I supposed to pay for any sort of education?! You were supposed to get a scholarship!"
"C'mon ma, college just doesn't run in the family- ow!"
"Don't interrupt me while I'm lecturing your sister! I can't stand having my only daughter becoming a deadbeat just like her brother!"
Hyun sat back and rolled his eyes, glancing at his sister. Aru sat in her seat with her head down as her mother drowned her with complaints of choices out of her grasp. Hyun shook his head and turned away from his mother and sister. That's when he noticed a letter flutter from the coffee table and onto the floor. He went over and picked it up. He opened it and gave it a brief reading, smirking as he put it in his mother's face. She scowled and glared at him.
"What is this?! I said to-"
"Just read it and give the dweeb a break."
It took only a second before Mrs. Kim squealed and pulled Aru into the air, hugging her.
"You got accepted! Oh, I knew my baby girl would succeed! The education is even paid for you! We don't have to spend a penny! This calls for a celebration! You know, I never doubted you one bit my girl! Oh! I've got to brag to your aunts and the neighbors! They had to pay for their kids!"
Mrs. Kim rambled on and on as she left the kitchen, leaving her children behind. Aru sat dumbfounded as Hyun ruffled her hair.
"Looks like you aren't a deadbeat after all. You're just full of surprises."
Hyun cackled as he went off to find where his mother went. Aru picked up the letter and read it over.
Dear Miss Aru Kim,
I am very pleased to inform you that you have been accepted to, The Buddhist University of Reincarnation. The address to the school, as well as the various transportation to it, will be listed on the second letter. A package containing a few essentials and accessories will be on your doorstep. Your first semester begins in two months in the future from the day you receive this letter. We will be awaiting your arrival.
Sincerely,
Principle Yemma
Aru read it several times over. Putting down the letter, she sighed in confusion.
"I don't remember sending them an application...perhaps I just forgot under all the pressure momma has been giving me...who cares! I finally did something good, for once! Reincarnation University, here I come!"
As she ran off to retrieve the package from the porch, the letter swiftly flew itself into her room. Gently lodging itself onto her bulletin board, it rested. Aru practically skipped into her room as she plopped it onto her bed. As she opened it, the door closed by itself. Several blue beams flew out and circled her. In an instant, Aru received enormous amounts of information at once. Her eyes momentarily turned blue before returning to normal. She yelped then fell to her knees, holding her head while gasping for air, she glanced over at the package.
"Just, what kind of school is this?"
