(Reader POV)
I woke up the next morning with my head on his shoulder and my hand on his chest. I carefully got up, trying not to hurt him. I went to the closet to get dressed before finding Hazel. I pulled her aside. "Hey, Hazel, can I ask you a favor?" I asked. She nodded. "I was wondering if you would help me by getting the shrapnel out of Leo's chest and arms." Her eyes widened. "Wouldn't it be easier to use tweezers?" She asked. I shook my head. "No, because it would take forever to find and pull out all the metal, and he might not last the day. Just. Please, Hazel," I said. "For me," I pleaded. "Okay. For you," she sighed. "Oh my gods. Thank you, Hazel. I owe you one," I said as I went to the mess hall to grab a couple plates.
When I got back to our quarters, Leo was still sleeping. I smiled, running light footed to my desk to grab my notebook. I pulled a chair up next to his bed, eating my toast while I sketched. I finished my toast shortly before I finished the sketch. Hazel walked in and took a look at Leo. She smiled before looking at me. "He looks so peaceful. Are you sure you wanna do this now?" I nodded. "Best to do it when he's sleeping, so he's not, you know, screaming in pain." "Okay." She walked over to the bed, and I grabbed his hand, alleviating the pain. His face contorted in pain as Hazel removed the metal from one of his arms. She went to work on his other arm, getting the metal out before taking a short break. "Did you want to-?" She gestured at his shirt. "Oh," I said, standing and pulling his shirt over his head. I sat back down, grabbing his hand again as Hazel started extracting metal out of his chest. His knuckles turned white as his grip tightened on mine. Hazel removed the last piece of metal, and Leo whimpered. "Thank you," I whispered to Hazel as she left the room. She looked back. "You're welcome."
Leo woke up a couple minutes later, groaning in pain. "Shh, shh, shh," I said, holding a finger to his lips. He looked at me. I gave him the piece of ambrosia Hazel brought in the night before. He ate it, some of the cuts on his arms and face disappearing. "How do you feel?" I asked. "I feel better than I did last night," he said, smiling. I smiled as tears of joy clouded my vision. I pressed a hand against the side of his face, stroking his cheek with my thumb. I brushed his hair out of his face, some of my tears falling onto his chest. His smile faded. "Why are you crying now?" He asked. I hugged him carefully, my tears falling on his back. "I'm happy you're going to make it," I said into his shoulder. "I'm glad, too, because it means that I can spend more time with you," he chuckled, his hand in my hair. i sat down next to him on the bed, burying my face in his neck. I inhaled the scent of grease, wood, smoke, and blood. "I love you," I murmured. "I love you, too," he whispered in my ear as he pulled me onto his lap. i wrapped my arms around his neck. "Mmm," I said, inhaling the scent of him as I became drowsy. I fell asleep a few seconds later, his arms wrapped around me.
I didn't sleep for very long, though. I woke up, my face still buried in Leo's neck. I had my arms still around his neck, and I smiled. I pressed my lips into his neck, and he turned his head, lifting my head with a finger. He pressed his lips to mine for a minute before pulling back. "Usted es muy hermosa, mi amor," he whispered. i smiled. "Te amo," I whispered against his lips. "Te quiero, también," he whispered back. I closed the gap, kissing him. It wasn't anything intense, just a small kiss. I pulled back, nuzzling his cheek. The lunch bell rang, and I groaned. "I don't want to move," I whispered against his skin. "Neither do I, but someone's gotta go get plates," he said. I groaned again. "Fine. I'll be back," I said, getting up.
When I got back, I sat down on the side of his bed, handing him a plate.
