Reflections
The email message, concerning the weekly writing challenge Megyn sporadically participated in, seemed to accuse her from the screen of her cell phone. "Reflection" was the prompt for this week. Oh, yeah. Just lovely.
Megyn knew about reflections of all types. Her life was filled to overflowing with reflections over the past few weeks. The reflection of a smiling couple in a mirror as they gazed upon each other with desire. The light of a fire reflecting off the champagne bubbles in the crystal flutes they held. The flash of the large diamond ring reflecting its internal fire for the world and Megyn to view.
Then, last, but not least, Megyn's reflection in the window as she stood looking in on the tableau of her boyfriend and the woman to whom he'd just proposed. A live-in boyfriend that she'd devoted herself to for the past four years. A woman she'd had no clue existed until that very moment.
She knew about reflections of the past and saying farewell to the promise of a different future than the one she faced. Her finger pressed the trash can symbol on her phone, and the email was gone but the memories it set in motion remained. Maybe she should skip this week's challenge. Her hand grasped the laptop screen to close it down before it paused, and returned to the keyboard.
Clicking on the internet link and her social media sites, Megyn decided to do a little networking. She put out a tweet, responded to some friend requests. A message window popped up in the lower right-hand corner of her screen.
"Hi. Thanks for accepting my friend request."
The photo next to the picture was a goofy-looking yellow lab. It brought a smile to Megyn's face. Maddening Max was the name next to the profile pic.
"Well hello, Max. I wonder who you drive crazy?" Murmuring to herself, she wrote a reply and hit send before she changed her mind.
Megyn: "Maddening Max, you're welcome. I admire any creature who instills passionate emotions in the people around them."
Maddening Max: "Megyn if only you knew. I would think you might cause the same type of emotions."
Megyn blushed at the possible hidden meanings in the response. How should she respond? Perhaps innocent and unaware would be the best response.
Megyn: "I try not to upset anyone. It was nice chatting, Max."
She went offline and closed the laptop.
The next day, she found a message from Maddening Max.
Maddening Max: "Megyn. I've run away from home and can't find my way back. Can you help me?"
Shit. This is strange. This idiot needs blocking, pronto. The mouse was poised over the Unfollow tab, and she clicked. Done. As she headed out the door for the day, she heard a man's voice calling out.
What did he just yell? Was it Max? She looked in the direction from which the voice seemed to come. A dark-haired guy in a t-shirt and jeans was walking down the sidewalk with a bag of treats and a leash yelling and looking frantically around the neighborhood.
This was too strange to believe. Something heavy bumped Megyn's leg, and her gaze dropped to the side of her vehicle and the reflection on its side of a goofy-looking yellow lab with its tongue hanging out as it leaned against her legs.
She laughed. Reflections.
