Chapter 2: Showing Humanity
If you are still reading then I am truly surprised. From what I have witnessed, not everyone has the stomach to hear of the stories of a murderer. Maybe the crimes I committed intrigues you. Maybe it is learning whose blood I have spilled to survive in this cold, callous world. Or maybe you were interested when I said I have some piece of humanity, that makes me not as bad as I let on. Either way, I, Kancia, am grateful that you are reading my story.
It has been eleven years since that event, and I can say my life has, in some ways, changed for the better. After so long, I finally had a sister. I wish I could say that the young girl I rescued was her, but I never saw her since then, leaving me to hope a decent family took her in and showered her with the love she deserves. Besides, I would hate for my face to remind her of the horrors of her past. No, my sister was a bereacher like me, but belonging to a different branch.
Tama was only fifteen when I took her in. We had first met when she was being kidnapped for her greatest asset of her breed. It was her stunning appearance. Whether it be Tama's blonde hair that faded into rose gold or her hour-glass figure, she caught every human male's attention, leaving them in a trance. After all, she was born from her mother's affair, making her a bereacher of infidelity, allowing her looks to be the net that catches her prey. But sometimes in nature, the hunter becomes the hunted.
Like me, during her adolescent years, she did not know she possessed powers. In our world, people possess earthy eyes and hair colours. However, because of the pinkness of her hair and the magenta hues in her iris, she stuck out easily.
I remembered how there was a group of men who had kidnapped her from her father at night while I was flying above searching for my next meal. Two bulky men hauled her from her house, covering her mouth with a cloth. She tried to punch and kick her way out, but they were too strong for her.
They threw her into a wooden cage on a cart pulled by a horse, treating her as if she was some savage animal they needed to tame. The poor girl crawled into a corner, weeping her eyes out. She held her arms, trying to use the friction created by her palms to warm her from the frigid air. For the men, the wood blocked the sound of her cries. But, in my case, even my ears could detect the smallest of her peeps. Fearful of the fate in store for the child, I swooped in with the help of my feathered wings.
Once my foot came into contact with the ground, the two black bone extensions, called scians, emerged from my back, enabling me to stab two of the men there through their chests. When the rest saw this, they ordered the rider to escape with the girl. I tried to rush before the rider could nudge the horse to gallop, yet the other men blocked my path. I watched as they pulled out their swords and knives, while each one rushed in to attack. The first to strike slashed his sword, and reflexively, I used my arm to block it. Since the time I truly tapped into my powers, my skin has become as strong as diamonds.
The man was shocked that his sword did not even scratch my flesh, as the life drained from his face. He froze in place, giving me the window to stab him with my scians, as they pierced through his body in an instance. Not wasting time, I did the same to all except one. That one was a coward, as he tried to run away. Taking a knife from one of the fallen criminals, I threw the blade, giving it enough momentum to soar and embedded itself in his head. He collapsed to the ground, headfirst. Approaching him, I could see that he was dead while the blood seeped from his head. I knew he posed no threat to my mission to save Tama, but I was nauseated to think he could involve himself in such an act.
Looking around to see if any of the men were still alive, it satisfied me to know I had ended them all. However, that triumph was short-lived when I used my wings to thrust me into the air as I searched for the girl. As I flew, I heard the noise of wheels below. Following the sound, I soared through the sky until the cart came into sight. Similarly, the rider noticed me when he turned back to check if he was being followed. He prodded the horse to speed up, but the stallion was no match for the celerity of my wings. Quickly, I caught hold of the cage, gently carrying it off the cart. I thanked the universe for giving me the added strength to lift another human being with ease, otherwise this task would have been quite strenuous. Angling myself away from the cart, I placed the wooden box, containing the girl, on the ground. Hastily, I stripped away the wood with my scians like a child tearing paper. In the corner of my eye, I saw that the rider was rearing his horse to catch the prize he and his comrades worked so hard to capture.
"Please do not hurt me. I am sorry if I did anything to you," the girl begged, shielding herself amongst the pieces of broken wood.
"I am not here to hurt you, but that man is. Run and climb that tree over there! Do not come down unless I instruct you to," I pointed to a tree that was some distance from our location, "I will protect you. I promise."
Urging the girl to rush, I turned my attention to the rider who had unhooked the cart from the stallion. By this time, my blood was boiling like crazy and my stomach was growling for a soul to eat. This was not a good sign. Instantly, my more violent alternate side took over my body. My normal red eyes glowed, while my mind, which was initially in control of my body, felt like it was watching someone else take the reins. Now, my darker half was in control, meaning that things were going to get gruesome.
"Finally, some dinner!" my alternate ego spoke joyfully, "I'm starving."
