Chapter Two: Grian

This chapter is a chapter. Good day.

Okay, but this actually made me smile so much while I was writing. I had to take a deep breath occasionally, and if I could have written this outside, I would've. Too cold for that, though.

WC: ~1440 (waaaaaay better than LAST chapter)

Enjoy!

Grian woke up with a groan. His head was throbbing, and the colors around him blurred together. Grian's vision adjusted to see... grass?

Grass? Grian grabbed some of it in his fist, exhaling as he felt it. Grass is something that everyone knows the feeling of. Grass feels a little rough, a little soft, and the blades are smooth.

It had been months since Grian had felt grass.

Grian pulled himself up, onto his knees, and looked around. Trees, flowers, grass, water. The air was thicker than he was used to, but comforting in a way.

How did I get here? Grian wondered. There was no one there except for him. Did ⨅ᒷリᔑ put me here? Why? Grian stood up and focused on his body's state.

Pain.

In his wings.

In his head.

Everywhere.

Grian groaned again as the wave of pain hit him. Grian's hand instinctively went up to rub his forehead, but he hit material, reminding the Watcher of his mask. Grian sighed, shaking out his wings.

Grian stood up again and cautiously began walking. The pain was overwhelming, and Grian fell multiple times. The full-body pain eventually calmed down, still there but mild. However, his right wing was still burning. Grian pulled it into a positon in which he could see it. It was bent, and Grian guessed it had broken. Awesome.

Grian crouched in the grass and picked up a blue flower. He gently twirled it in his fingers, noting the color. It was a vibrant blue, unlike the dry green-blue of the end portal frames. A soft smile came to Grian's face as he thought about how he had been thinking about how bland and colorless life was. Then, no less than ten minutes later, the stars had blessed him with color. So. Much. Color.

The pale blue of the sky. It practically glimmered in the bright light of the sun. The sun was often described as yellow, but Grian didn't really see that. The sun was like a ball of pure light. It shined dangerously, but its light was warm.

Green. That was a common color in the overworld. The darker green of the tree's leaves. The brilliant green of the grass. The brown of the soil and bark matched with the greens. The dusty brown of the soil. The rich brown of the bark.

And the flowers... dots of color littered the landscape. Red, blue, pink, yellow, purple, orange, all of them, they were everywhere. They were beautiful. Everything felt beautiful.

Until he heard a scream behind him.

Mesmerized by the scenery, he hadn't heard the sound of a portal.

He hadn't heard the footsteps.

He hadn't heard anything, until the sound ripped Grian away from his thoughts.

Grian jumped up and whipped around to see twenty or so people coming from a portal. The rift closed up behind them, but they didn't seem to notice.

"How did a Watcher get here?" One of them asked, panic in their accented voice. Grian couldn't tell who said it.

"I don't know!" Another voice, with a different accent.

"X, what did you do?" Grian saw who said this. A male, about the same height as Grian. A bit taller, perhaps. He wore a green shirt and had brown hair. The most notable thing about his appearance was an eye that was blue, like a diamond. A diamond eye.

"I... I tried to send someone here," The same voice who said 'I don't know!' explained. Grian guessed this was 'X'. What a mysterious name. "I didn't try to bring a Watcher here!"

"How do we get rid of him?" Another voice. Grian narrowed his eyes behind the mask and felt the need to speak up.

"You know I can hear you, right?" Grian asked. "I'm not just going to wait here for you to sort yourselves out. It's like you expect me not to move or something."

The new people froze, and then a couple of them dashed forwards, taking Grian by surprise. He naturally spread his wings and beat them to propel himself into the air. Grian jumped,

... and then crashed back down onto the ground.

Broken wing.

Right.

Grian groaned, and his arms were grabbed.

"Apply pressure on the same area where you can feel his pulse," The voice of 'X' advised. "That's where the magic generates."

He knows his Watcher anatomy.

Grian winced as the two hands grabbing his arms squeezed. They held his arms back, leaving him laying on the ground stomach-down with his arms held behind him.

"What do we do with him?" A new voice. "How did he get here?"

"I have no idea how he got here," 'X' sighed. "As I've already said. This server is Watcher-proof, I have no idea how he busted the barriers." Grian's eyes widened when he realized what 'X' had said.

"Watcher-proof?" Grian asked, ignoring the growl behind him. "Like, no Watchers can get through?" A figure crouched down to his level. He wore green armor and had a helmet with a purple-tinted visor.

"Yes. Care to explain how you got here?" The voice of 'X' came from the helmet-wearing figure. Hm, Grian noted. I guess this is 'X'?

"He's not going to explain," A heavily accented voice snapped from behind Grian. One of the ones who are holding my arms back. Awesome. "He's a Watcher, he doesn't care to explain himself."

"On the contrary," Grian piped up, hiding his fear. "I'd love to explain. Perhaps you can tell me what really happened. Though I doubt you'll believe me. It all started when I was summoned-"

Grian launched into his tale, covering every detail he could remember. Why he was explaining all of this to these strange people, he didn't know. Maybe it was because he liked the aura that was coming off of some of them. Maybe it was because, for some reason, he wanted them to trust him.

"That story makes no sense," The same hostile, accented voice grumbled. Grian did his best to shrug.

"Tell me something I don't know," Grian mumbled. "Can you please let me up now?"

"Why should I?" The voice snarled.

"Doc," X muttered. "Let him."

"X, are you nuts?" That was a new voice, female sounding. "He'll kill us all."

"False, Doc," X said, oddly calm. "Let him go." After a moment, Grian's arms were released.

Grian pulled himself up to see... a bunch of faces. The helmeted one of 'X'. The one with the diamond eye. Someone who had jet black hair and a prominent mustache. A woman with red-orange hair and looked part zombie. So many others.

"What do we do now?" The person with the mustache asked. He wore a suit and had chocolate-brown eyes.

"We're going to have to keep our eyes on him," 'X' said cautiously. "Make sure he can't hurt anyone. We'll start the season as normal, but we're going to have to take turns watching him. I don't want him alone. Mumbo, you're taking first shift. Got it?" There were murmurs of agreement, and everyone slowly departed off, leaving Grian alone with 'Mumbo', who turned out to be the man with the mustache.

"Erm, you're Mumbo?" Grian asked, feeling obligated to say something. Mumbo nodded.

"And you?" the man asked, surprising Grian.

"Grian," he said. Mumbo gave an awkward nod and went to go harvest some nearby trees. Grian sighed, pulling his mask off. Why was he here anyways?

Grian rubbed his sore eyes. They always hurt after he had the mask on for too long. Grian tossed the mask away, not wanting it near him.

"You know, you're a bit of an odd Watcher," Mumbo called from across the clearing.

"Why's that?" Grian couldn't help but ask.

"Watchers are terrifying." Mumbo explained. "You didn't try and kill us the moment you saw us, so I'd call that a plus." Grian laughed at that.

It felt good to laugh.

"I'm not really like the other Watchers," Grian told him. "I don't like terrorizing people. ⨅ᒷリᔑ says that's a problem, but I don't-" Grian trailed off under Mumbo's stare. "What?"

"Sorry, what did you say?" Mumbo asked. "Who says that it's a problem?"

"⨅ᒷリᔑ," Grian repeated, then realized. "Oh! That's Galactic. Though you might know it as... enchantment table language." Mumbo's eyes widened.

"You- those are actually words?" Mumbo breathed. Grian smiled. He was oddly enjoying this.

"Yes, it's the language of the End," Grian said. "⨅ᒷリᔑ would be said... Zena. Through direct translation."

"That's amazing," Mumbo said with a smile. Grian raised an eyebrow.

"Why are you talking to me?" The Watcher had to ask. "Instead of watching my every move?" Mumbo shrugged.

"I think you're different," he explained sheepishly. Grian smiled.

"I think you're right."
