Chapter 6

Silver slowly woke up and rubbed the sleep from his eyes. When was the last time he had been so well rested? He was still incredibly drowsy and barely kept his eyes open. "Good morning..." he mumbled to who he assumed was (y/n). Who else could have shaken him awake?

"You're name is Scarlett, right?" Wait, that wasn't (y/n)'s voice.

"Huh?" Silver blinked a few times before his eyes focused on the sight of a blonde boy sitting across from him.

"Hurry and get your things. I'm going to hide you for the day. If that woman finds you, we're going to have a very unpleasant week and a half."

Silver took a moment to process the situation. There were only four other people on this boat. The captain, Lillie, (y/n) and, "Gladion?" Silver realized with a bit of unease. The boy's sharp gaze was definitely meant to intimidate others, but Silver remembered what (y/n) had told him.

"So you know who I am already. Good, that saves time. Now, let's go. Yana is busy guiding the ship for now. We need to get you to my room while we can," Gladion stood up and reached a hand out towards him.

"Where's (y/n)?" Silver asked once he was standing. He didn't fail to notice the slight change in Gladion's mood when he mentioned the girl.

"Upstairs. No, you can't go. I brought you some food from this morning's breakfast. It'll get cold if you don't hurry." Gladion slipped out of the room without another word to him.

"What's his deal?" Silver thought. One look at him, and you could tell that Gladion wasn't getting any sleep. Maybe that was the reason? Silver took the pillow and comforter back to (y/n)'s bed before grabbing his bag. When he peeked out the door, Gladion was waiting for him. He made a quick gesture for Silver to follow him a bit further down the hall. Gladion waited at the door for a moment after Silver had entered the room as if waiting for someone. He took a seat next to Gladion's desk, for the room was nearly identical to (y/n)'s, and wondered how long Gladion would stand there waiting.

Much to Silver's surprise, a pokémon he had never seen before met Gladion at the door. "Sorry, Sil. I need you to keep watch for me a little longer," Gladion quietly spoke to the pokémon. The nickname used for the pokémon caused Silver to flinch. Perhaps Gladion assumed that Silver couldn't hear him. It wasn't as if he knew that Silver's ears were trained to hear even the slightest of sounds due to his past in thievery. That nickname though...where had he heard it?

Gladion parted with the pokémon, closing the door to his room. Silver pretended as if he was looking through his bag and hadn't heard a thing. "Alright bandage boy, I want answers. Who are you and why are you so attached to (y/n)?" Gladion immediately said, not hesitating to sit on the floor across from him and hand him the plate of food he had mentioned.

"I'm not attached to anyone," Silver immediately snapped having taken offense to the statement, but he certainly accepted the food without a problem. He was never going to put that much trust into anyone again. Anyone with that level of trust always vanished from his life or caused him more pain than peace. But then his mind went back to Phillip for a brief moment. He shook the thought from his head before retaliating at Gladion again. "And my name is Sil– Scarlett, not bandage boy."

Gladion noticed the slip up, but didn't comment on it. "Okay then, Scarlett. Why are you here? What was so bad about Kanto that you had to hop onto some stranger's boat just to get away. And it better be a good reason because I haven't had sleep in days, and I am this close to snapping." There were obviously more underlying factors to Gladion's frustration. Silver recognized the feeling and suddenly wasn't as mad at the blonde anymore.

"You're having nightmares too, aren't you," Silver spoke. Gladion's glare only intensified. "I'm not here because of (y/n) if that's what you're thinking," he added. When Gladion didn't say anything, Silver figured that he had been correct. "What is she to you anyway, your girlfriend?"

"No, of course not," Gladion quickly answered. His glare softened a bit. "She's more like a sister to me. Thats why I need to know if I can trust you. She doesn't realize it herself, but she can sometimes get herself into bad situations without realizing it. Her and Lillie both have a way of attacting trouble." Gladion let out a deep sigh of irritation. "I wasn't supposed to tell you that," he mumbled to himself.

"People must really value trust in Alola," Silver thought aloud. He wasn't used to people seeking a confirmation of trust before letting him know things about themselves. Crystal hadn't done that. Neither had the executives in Team Rocket. Even Mewtwo hadn't sought Silver's trust when they had first met. Thinking of the physchic type pokémon had him beginning to worry. He hadn't heard anything from Mewtwo since leaving.

"What's your real name?" Gladion asked him. Silver couldn't act like he hadn't just screwed up. Gladion was not gullible. That much was obvious.

"I can't tell you. It might put you in danger," he decided to say.

"It's too late to worry about that. You're going to need help to face whatever you just left behind in Kanto. I'm not going to help anyone who lies to me all of the time." There was that look again, the same one Lillie had given him.

"Silver. My name is Silver," he admitted. "But there really are some things that I can't tell you. I...I've done some pretty bad things."

"Probably not as bad as joining a criminal organization. I must say, it wasn't one of my best ideas," Gladion said. Silver just stared at him hoping that the blonde wouldn't catch on to why he was so silent. "No way." Gladion's eyes went wide with surprise.

"It wasn't my fault! Okay, no it was, but I was trying to find someone important to me. I didn't know any better," Silver said in his defense. Gladion just merely stiffled his laugh. Silver didn't exactly expect such behavior from him, but again he remembered (y/n)'s words.

"I was trying to make you feel better, but I guess you really have been through a lot," Gladion said, his brief amusement fading back into seriousness.

"Then does that mean you're also running from someone?" Silver asked. Gladion shook his head.

"No, that already happened. I stole a pokemon from a facility and tried to solve things my way, but it didn't exactly work out." Gladion frowned at his own past. Then he looked at Silver hoping that his next question would be answered with a no. "Don't tell me you also stole a pokemon from a facility too. That's just too coincidental."

To embarrassed to speak, Silver nodded in confirmation and reached into his bag to pull out Feraligatr's pokéball. "The pokémon lab was the best place to find a strong pokémon, so I just went for the first one I got." Then Silver's gaze grew distant as he looked at the pokéball in his hand. "Neither of my pokémon have responded to me after..." Silver stopped himself when he remembered the traumatizing event.

"If you don't want to talk about it, it's not a big deal. I'm just surprised that there's actually someone out there who did the same things I did," Gladion shrugged. "You're really weird," he laughed.

"And you aren't?" Silver countered with a laugh of his own. He was just as surprised as Gladion was. First (y/n) shared his fear of water and now Gladion was telling him that he had done some of the same things he did. It had Silver less anxious about what awaited him in Alola. "Maybe I can trust Gladion too." The thought sparked a flicker of hope within him, but it was quickly pushed aside when he saw Gladion reach up to hold his chest.

"Are you okay?" Silver asked, quickly reaching over and catching hold of his shoulder to keep Gladion from falling over.

"Yeah, I'm fine. Just need some rest is all," he mumbled. Silver helped him stand up, but the boy wasn't stanble for very long. He fell again, this time losing conciousness. Silver was just barely able to break his fall.

"Gladion!!" Silver panicked. What was he supposed to do? "Mewtwo! Are you there? I need your help!" He was met with chilling silence. The sound of something scratching against the door snapped him out of his petrified state and had him running to open the door. The pokémon that Silver had seen earlier rushed into the room and immediately went to Gladion's side, nudging him with his nose.

Silver didn't stay to see what happened next. In that moment, he didn't care if the captain would see him. He quickly made his way towards the stairs remembering that (y/n) was somewhere on the second floor of the boat.

He followed what he thought to be the sound of laughter as Lillie and (y/n) were having a pleasant conversation. When he appeared at the kitchen door, they were certainly surprised. "Scarlett? Why are you up here? Where's Gladion?" Lillie asked. Before he could answer, (y/n) sprang from her chair and ran past him. It was as if she already knew.

Lillie didn't seem to understand what was going on, but she didn't stay seated either. The both of them went after (y/n) without exchanging a single word.
