Chapter 4
Silver shot up from the floor, terrified from the same reoccurring nightmare. It was the first time in a while that he had actually re-experienced the fall. Usually the slow replay of events would end right as Crystal acted. He was having a hard time keeping his breathing steady, but he quickly realized that a few things had changed.
The light in the room was off, which Silver was sure had been on before he went to sleep. Then there was the comforter from (y/n)'s bed draped over him. He clutched it to him as he calmed his breathing.
"Are you okay?" He looked over to see that (y/n) was wide awake and sitting up on her bed watching him. She seemed upset.
"You weren't alseep?" he chose to say rather than answering her.
"It's kind of hard to sleep with a stranger in your room. Plus you didn't seem like you were doing well over there." Her expression morphed into a frown. "Who is Crystal? You said that name in your sleep a couple times."
Silver looked down at the comforter and back over to (y/n). "Not anyone important," he quietly answered. Pieces of the memory were still vividly playing in his mind. (Y/n) got up and approached him, grabbing a box of tissues from her desk before sitting down next to him.
"I don't know what happened to you, but it's not going to happen again. Forget what I said earlier. I'm going to help you. I don't know how yet, but I can't just sit by and watch something like this happen to someone again." Silver took a few of the tissues as she spoke. "But for this to work, I need you to tell me everything. Why are you running and who are you running from?"
Silver shook his head at her. "I can't tell you that." He didn't want to spill his secrets to her like he had once done in another situation where he found himself in dire need of help. It was a mistake he never wanted to make again.
"Well, when the time comes for you to let me know, I hope you'll be able to do so." She was entirely serious, not accepting his answer as a fact. Silver just avoided her gaze and used the tissues he had been given. He was already embarrassed for having a nightmare in front of her. Now she was just looking at him without any sort of shame. Had she forgotten that she was still in her pajamas?
"Where is this boat headed?" Silver decided to ask. If he let them fall into another moment of quietness, he'd definitely want to hide himself from her.
"We're going back to Alola. It's about a week and a half trip from Kanto by boat. You're going to be stuck here for a while...assuming the captain or Gladion doesn't find you before we get there. I don't know why Lillie thought this would work out." (Y/n) smiled at him. "But don't worry. Gladion may try to act scary but he won't do anything to harm you if he catches you." Silver merely just hummed in amusement. He was definitely going to be avoiding Gladion. "If you don't mind me asking, did you enjoy your time in Kanto? This was my first time visiting. We didn't really get to stay for as long as we wanted to."
Silver only just then realized that (y/n) was a foreigner. Technically, he was too having come from Johto, but Kanto was so close both physically and socially that it was hard to tell if someone was from Johto or Kanto. He assumed that (y/n) and her friend Lillie were just some rich kids about to take a vacation to another country when in reality, Kanto was their vacation.
"I don't really know," Silver honestly answered. He intended to lie to her, but for whatever reason, he felt compelled to tell her the truth. "I didn't really have the time to figure that out."
(Y/n) seemed like she was about to apologize but quickly smiled and changed the subject. "Then do you look forward to anything in Alola? I've lived there all my life, so I know all about it."
"As long as there isn't too much water, I should be okay," Silver mumbled as he tried to recall what Alola was like. He had only heard people vaguely mentioning Alola. Most of the time they referred to it as a vacation spot. Other times he heard people say it was very hot there compared to Kanto. Then he put the two together before (y/n) expressed the thought she had practically written on her face. A hot vacation spot. The only thing that came to mind was a beach, and where there were beaches, there had to be water. "Oh no..." Silver spoke just barely above a whisper.
"Yeah, sorry. There's definitely a lot of water. Alola is made of four different islands. There's water every-" (y/n) stopped midspeech with concern directed at him. His hands had begun to shake and he stared at her with absolute terror. He was going to be surrounded by water. It was literally his second worst nightmare. "Are you...afraid of water?"
Again Silver wanted to lie, but there would be no use in that. If they were really going to Alola, a place of vast seas, she would find out anyway. All he could do was nod as he tried to calm down. "I'm not going to drown. I'm not going to drown. Mewtwo won't let me drown."
"Did Lillie drag you onto this boat knowing that?" Her slight anger was misplaced. Silver had gotten onto the boat willingly although he didn't realize that he would be sending himself into such a trap.
"It wasn't her fault," he managed to say. "I'm the one who was trying to get on a boat." He was waiting for her to question him about his fear or even criticize him for his actions, but she did nothing of the sort.
"Well, I didn't think I'd have that in common with someone," she said with a laugh. "I'm probably not as afraid of it as you though." Silver was stunned into silence, bewildered by the new information. "I'd explain, but I'm not sure if you'd believe me. It's not exactly a happy story, but there's no way it could be, right? Happy stories don't end in you getting a fear of touching water."
The way she laughed off the serious subject had Silver now worrying for her. Had she also been nearly drowned?
"What happened?" Silver dared to ask. He felt as if he didn't have the right to know since he had denied telling her about himself just moments earlier.
(Y/n) gave him a mischievous grin. "It's easier if I just show you." She rubbed her hands together much like Silver used to do on particularly cold Johto days. "Give me your hands."
Silver was hesitant, but he reached over to take hold of her hands. Nothing happened. "What's this supposed to do?" he asked, but (y/n) only started giggling in response. "Hey, this isn't funny. I seriously don't get it."
"You're hair," the girl nodded towards him once her laughter had nearly vanished. "I'm surprised you didn't notice."
Silver tried turning his head to look at his hair and caught a glimpse of what (y/n) was talking about. Several strands of his hair were floating in the air around him. The stands continued to rise until a majority of his hair was defying gravity with ease. "How are you doing this?" he wondered. It was amazing.
"Electricity. Well, this is just static electricity, not the real deal. I can produce it just as naturally as a Pikachu." If Silver wasn't sitting there seeing his hair flowing through the air, he wouldn't have believed her.
"Are you even human??" he asked, half joking. The little stunt had him holding back a smile. His previous mood was entirely replaced with one of pure awe.
"I'm pretty sure I'm still one hundred percent human. I was just in an accident when I was four, and this happened afterwards." Silver noticed her demeanor change a bit. "I can control it much better now, but I still sometimes get worried that I might hurt my friends. Going for swims during the summer heat is one of our favorite pass times. I don't want to ruin their day by accidentally..." she stopped herself, grimacing at whatever she was about to say. Now it made sense why she was afraid of water, and she had trusted him with this information.
"I almost drowned," he quietly stated. (Y/n)'s already soured mood turned worse. "I panic and forget how to swim, so I don't like being near the ocean or any lakes. Ponds are okay. They're more like baths."
"I'll make sure that never happens to you again. You have my word." Then she cracked a smile. "Alright, time to go back to sleep before your hair gets stuck that way." She let his hands go and his hair fell back down his shoulders in a mess. The poor girl started wheezing, trying her best not to let free the full blown laughter that was trying to fighting its way through. "I'm sorry. Let me at least fix your hair first."
Silver quietly watched her reach over and flatten his hair back down. She even combed through it with her fingers a little to make sure it was neat. Silver didn't want to point out to her that her efforts were in vain if he was just going to go to sleep again. He kept that thought to himself along with another one that he began to consider. "Maybe I can trust her."
"There, all done." She flashed him what Silver now recognized to be her signature smile which he couldn't help but return, albeit a bit shyly. "Good night," she quickly said and retreated to her bed just as fast as she had spoken. He caught himself starring for a moment before he also lay back down to sleep. His sleep was full of dreams about his younger days in Johto before everything had gone downhill for him, and he slept exceptionally well.
