Chapter 27

(Y/n) picked up her phone and answered it without thinking to worry. Gladion was the one calling. It was only in the middle of the afternoon. There was nothing wrong with that.

"Where are you right now?" was the first thing Gladion said after she greeted him.

"I'm in the city eating ice cream with Hau while Lillie gets a trim, why?" Upon hearing his name, Hau paused and gave her a questioning expression before returning to his sherbet treat.

"I need you to go to the professor's lab and convince you know who that he needs to leave. It's an emergency. I've already sent Yana to come pick him up, but he says he isn't going anywhere," Gladion informed her. "We got the guy off our tail for now, but I don't think we're out of the clear."

"What are you talking about? Why does he need to leave?" (Y/n) had already picked up on the nature of the situation, but she truly hoped it wasn't being caused by what she thought.

"Oh, I don't know. Why don't you ask Gold himself?" Gladion hissed.

"Now listen here," (y/n) snapped at him. "Don't just call me so suddenly and expect me to just understand everything. Calm down and tell me what I need to know." Now Hau had simply stopped to listen to the part of the conversation that he could hear.

Gladion sighed. "I'm just really not in the mood right now. Go talk to him. He says he's not leaving because of you. Moon ran into Gold here on Ula'ula Island. He left with some woman from the Battle Tower. They're definitely looking for him." Gladion stopped to listen to Moon who had spoken in the background. "Moon said she heard him saying he'll be heading to Akala Island. There might be more time, but there's no need to take risks in a situation like this."

"Okay, thank you. Now go get some rest. You sound like you need it. I'll meet up with you later today. Tell Moon I said hi," (y/n) said, as she stood from the outdoor table that she and Hau were sitting at.

"Yeah, whatever. Don't do anything to get yourself into any trouble," Gladion huffed. "I'll be at the office for the rest of the day. If you have any trouble getting into the building on the way, just call." (Y/n) said a final goodbye and hung up before she began to relay the situation to Hau.

"Then what are you waiting for? I can stay here and wait on Lillie, but you need to get going," he said, politely shooing her away.

"Thanks Hau. I owe you another round of malasadas."

"That's three now. You'll want to catch up on those repayments unless you want your pockets to start crying," he joked. Ah wait, Hau was entirely serious about that one. (Y/n) could only return a nervous laugh before she cleaned away the last of her frozen treat and headed towards Professor Kukui's lab. As she ran, she released her Lycanroc.

"Can you head to the dock and wait for me?" Her pokémon responded with a bark. "And don't bite Mrs. Yana," she added. Lycanroc made no such promise and already started to go in the opposite direction of her.

(Y/n) arrived to Hau'oli Outskirts out of breath since she had ran the whole way there. To her surprise, Silver was already waiting for her as if he knew she'd be there. He sat in the sand in front of Kukui's lab, but still remained a decent distance away from the shoreline.

"Hey," she casually called as she sat down next to him. "You know why I'm here, don't you. I'm sure Gladion already called."

"I already told him that I wasn't going anywhere right now. He didn't have to call you," Silver mumbled. He played in the sand with one of his hands, picking up a handful of the substance and letting it fall through his fingers.

"I told you it was fine if you had to go. I understand."

"This isn't about that. At least, not entirely." He looked at her with a bit of concern. "You worry too much about me. It's starting to make me feel bad."

"Well what am I supposed to do, not care? These people erased your records from existence. I wouldn't want them within a million kilometers of you, but that's not really possible." (Y/n) was curious about his sudden change of heart. He had been improving rather quickly as far as his mental state was concerned, so she was almost certain that it wasn't just his anxiety talking. "You said yourself that you didn't believe a single word Gold had said when you first met him."

"I still really don't." Silver looked as if he was recalling that day in the Pokémon Center when he had told her about Gold mentioning protective custody and that he was actually there to help. "But I do know that I'm not innocent. Still, I did some research on my own with the professor's help." It was the first that (y/n) had heard of this. She had given Silver his distance as he rightfully deserved, so she had no idea what he and Professor Kukui had been up to. "The international police don't have the authority to erase my records. It wasn't them."

"Is that why you're staying here?" She didn't understand.

Silver shook his head. "I want to talk to Gold for myself. If the international police didn't delete my records, that means someone else out there did. That means Gold could have been telling the truth."

"But Crystal was there," (y/n) reminded him. She knew little about the girl, but it was no exaggeration to say that she held a certain amount of disdain towards her.

"That's why I have a hard time believing what he said, but I've had time to think about everything. There were people there who were looking for Mewtwo as well. I have questions, but the only way to get them answered is to go to the people responsible for everything." (Y/n) shook her head at him and was moments away from protesting when Silver gave her that same look. It was the exact same one that he had showed when they were standing outside of the malasada shop during what seemed like such a long time ago. "You're one of the most important people in the world to me right now, so I wanted to ask you about this." Silver reached into his pocket and pulled free his cellphone.

"What are you doing?" (Y/n) watched him dial a number on his keypad before he held it out to her.

"I'm going to turn myself in. It took some time, but Kukui helped me find an agent stationed here in Alola. This is their contact number." He looked her in the eyes. "But you have the choice to stop me. I don't trust my own thoughts sometimes, so I doubted the decision more times than I can count." (Y/n) felt hot tears rising as she stared back at Silver. "I did the research with Kukui, so I know how to keep them from taking me away from here if it comes to that. I made sure to know what rights I have."

"Silver, this...why are you having me make this decision for you?" (Y/n) was too overwhelmed by it all. "I can't possibly know what the right thing would be." She felt the sting of electricity at her fingers. Silver noticed it sparking in her hair as well.

"I want you to do this because I trust you." Silver still held the phone out towards her.

(Y/n) wanted to be angry with him. She wanted to throw the phone aside and shake him by his shoulders to snap him out of whatever this was. She wanted to shout at the sky and release all her pent up electricity at the top of Mount Lanakila in the middle of the biting snow. "Why can't you trust yourself too, Silver?"

"Because the last time I did that, I almost died." His eyes never left hers. "And...because I'm scared." As she began to finally calm down at the mention of his past experience, she noticed how much he was shaking. Silver was literally doing all that he could not to lose it right in front of her. "When I thought of ways to bring myself back to my normal, I couldn't get past the fact that I would always be on the run. Even if I managed to be okay with myself, I couldn't keep running away forever, and that meant that I would leave you waiting forever too."

In that moment, Gladion's words came back to (y/n) leaving a bitter taste in her mouth. "Running away from the problem doesn't solve it." She looked at the screen in front of her and stared at the sequence of numbers that waited for her action. "What if you don't agree with my choice?"

"I will," Silver spoke without faltering though she could tell that he wouldn't hold up for much longer.

"Silver, that isn't an answer." She wasn't taking this well either, but her hand moved to take the phone from him anyway. She stared down at it before looking back at Silver. A choice was made. Whether or not it was the right one...they would soon find out.

"Hello? Are you trying to reach the Battle Tower?"
