Chapter 2
Silver kept the small piece of paper tucked away in his pocket. He contemplated whether or not he should throw away Philip's number to keep the man safe. Silver wasn't sure if the police would do anything to Phillip if they suspected him of helping Silver, and he wanted to keep that from happening. He was distraught and already beginning to think that this was it for him.
"Hello there!" Silver came to a surprise halt as a saleswoman stepped into his path. "Would you like to try our special for today? We're selling this special package forty percent off. You get this amazing watch, a limited edition pokémon figurine, an all natural wallet, and a poster of your choosing all for the fair price of fifty dollars!"
"I don't really-" Silver was already trying to find a way to escape the woman. He could tell she had targeted him, likely intending to guilt him into buying the package.
"It's also a wonderful gift for friends or family! The sale is only going on for a limited time today. You don't want to miss out!" What was he supposed to say? He wasn't in the mood for this right now.
"Oh, there you are!" A complete total stranger called to him. "Why didn't you wait for me to pick you up? I told you that you were going to get lost." The girl took hold of his arm and began to pull him away from the persistent woman. "Sorry, but we won't be buying from here today. Maybe some other time. Have a nice day though!" And just like that, Silver found himself being escorted away from the lady by a girl he had never seen before in his entire life. "I'm sorry, but you seemed like you could use a hand. I've never seen such aggressive salespeople before," the girl apologized to him.
Silver didn't even think to complain. As soon as they rounded the corner, she let him go. "Thank you," he mumbled before she ran off.
"No problem! You should be careful, this region is kind of dangerous," she said before continuing onward. She stopped when she reached a blonde girl and pointed at him. The two looked his way, and he was still standing there so he waved. They both waved back and he saw the girl bring her blonde friend back over to him.
"I'm sorry. (Y/n) must have startled you by dragging you around out of nowhere like that," the blonde girl said. She bowed her head and had her friend do the same. "We won't make any more trouble for you."
Silver hadn't seen anyone apologize like this in a long time. "No, no it's okay," he tried to get them to stop. Bowing like this was only done in major situations. Didn't they know that? "Really, it's not that big of a deal."
"Again, sorry for the trouble. We won't bother you again," (y/n) said although she stayed still when Lillie began to leave. "Um, Lillie, before we go," she turned to look at Silver again. "I know it's probably none of my business but are your hands okay? I have bandages if you-"
"(Y/n)!" Lillie whisper yelled at her friend already reaching to pull her along.
"Yes, please," Silver spoke up before Lillie could apologize again. "That would be nice..." Silver mumbled, holding his head a bit lower to avoid their gazes.
"Okay! Can we go sit there on that bench so we don't have to stand on the sidewalk?" (y/n) offered. The three of them made there way there in a somewhat awkward silence. Silver was almost ashamed to hold his hands out to her seeing as she looked concerned for him without knowing where the bruises had come from. "There you go..." she said, trailing off after realizing she didn't know his name.
"Scarlett," he said out of habit. "My name is Scarlett." He didn't trust these strangers with his real name anyway. No one needed to know it.
"Well it was nice to meet you, Scarlett," (y/n) said. Lillie nodded in agreement flashing a smile at him. "I hope you take care of yourself. I'm only guessing, but you seem like you're having a hard time with something. Whatever it is that you're trying to reach, I'm sure you'll get there without a problem."
Silver stayed seated on the bench watching them leave. Part of him didn't want them to go, but the other part of him was letting them go because he knew that it wouldn't lead to anything good. He couldn't trust anyone, especially now that he had to leave Kanto. Deciding to forget that he even met them, Silver got up and headed home.
"You were supposed to come back early," Mewtwo growled when Silver came sneaking into his own home.
"I got fired. Someone's looking for me. We can't stay in Kanto anymore," Silver bluntly relayed the information. This came as no shock to Mewtwo. "Did you already know that would happen?" Silver asked hoping that wasn't the case.
"I had a feeling that you would need to leave, yes. However, I was unaware of those other occurrences. You stopped somewhere before coming here. Where did you go?" Mewtwo had seen the bandages. There was no use in hiding them.
"A girl helped me get away from a bad situation and wrapped my hands in these as an apology," Silver mumbled. He did want to forget the two girls, but that was hard to do when the bandages were still present. "Don't fall for kindness like that. It isn't real," he told himself frowning at his hands.
"You should pack what you can. I will find a place for you to go by morning. There's someone I must find before leaving this place."
"You're leaving?" Silver was moreso surprised that the pokémon was looking for anyone at all.
"It is nothing you need to put any thought to. Or are you forgetting about what you agreed to when I saved you," Mewtwo spoke harshly. Silver didn't feel threatened since Mewtwo liked to throw out that phrase whenever he got upset or didn't want Silver to know something.
"Fine, do what you want. Just wake me up when you get back. I'm going to sleep." That was the plan, at least. There wasn't anything that Silver felt he needed to take with him except a few changes of clothes and his two pokémon that remained dormant in their pokéballs. He'd repurchase anything else once he reached whatever region he was going to next. He just hoped he had enough to get him that far.
Silver ended up not being able to sleep at all. No matter how many times he closed his eyes, sleep did not come. He could only think of one thing. "Kindness was not to be trusted. People only show their true colors when their lives depend on it. You can't trust them. You'll never see them again anyway. Especially not her." Silver knew this to be true, but he hoped that there was a chance that he was wrong.
A knock at his door had him rising from his bed on high alert. Mewtwo didn't need to knock. The physchic pokémon had plenty of different ways he could enter the motel room without doing so. Silver quickly fumbled around the sheets of his bed to find his phone. It was nearly ten P.M. meaning no one in their right mind should have been bothering him this time of night.
The knock sounded again. "This is Gold, temporary junior detective of the international police. I'm looking to have a word with someone named Silver," this person named Gold called through the door.
"Mewtwo, where are you?" Silver thought as he carefully climbed out of bed without a sound and slipped on some clothes. His jacket brought back some undesirable memories, but he couldn't bring himself to get rid of it. He picked up the bag that he had packed before attempting to fall asleep and waited.
"Just give him time. Maybe he's asleep," Gold could be heard saying. Silver was about to approach the door to peek through the hole that allowed him to see who was outside, but he didn't make it. "Hey-!"
The door was forced off its hinges, and a group of three forced their way into the motel room. "Mewtwo!!" Silver called hoping that the physchic pokémon was somewhere nearby. They were police and didn't hesitate to grab him and drag him out of the room. "Let me go!" he cried.
"Crystal, is this him?" one of the officers asked. Crystal? Had this man just said that?
Silver raised his head and met the gaze of someone he wished he'd never have to see again. "Yeah, that's Silver. Don't hurt him, he hasn't done anything wrong."
The first thing he felt was a stab at his heart as he realized that Crystal seemed to be pretending as if she was still on his side. Then he was filled with rage as he broke free of the men holding him and launched himself at her. A boy around his age stopped him, stepping in his way and holding him in some sort of half hug. "Hey, buddy. Calm down. I know you're upset, but now isn't the time. I need your help. Forget she's here. I'm the one who's looking for you." Silver realized that this boy must have been Gold.
"Let me go," he snarled still trying to push past Gold. "She tried to kill me!"
"So what are you going to do? Kill her instead? What would that make you?" Gold spoke raising his voice. "I know what she did. I saw it happen, but I was too far away to do anything. And I'm sorry. I wish we had met under better circumstances, but right now I need you to calm down. It's okay." Now Gold really was hugging him.
"Let me go," Silver whimpered while still trying to break free of Gold's gold. He was almost tempted to give in to the offered comfort.
"We're here to take him into protective custody. Why do you have handcuffs?" Gold asked the police.
"Gold, Silver is suspected of being connected to a different set of crimes. They just want to ask him some questions," Crystal spoke up. "We're here to help hi-"
"No, I'm here to help him. You're only here because you were the last one to make contact with him. What's going on here? This wasn't what Looker and I agreed to." Silver was just as confused as Gold was but also because he didn't understand how yet another complete stranger was so keen on helping him.
"Kindness is for fools," he thought to himself. Just as he freed himself, his pokémon guardian returned with the same rage that Silver had just moments earlier.
Mewtwo landed on the ground with enough force to knock everyone to the ground. Even Silver landed on his behind with the arrival of the angered pokémon. As if waiting for Mewtwo to arrive, several more individuals dressed as police appeared from the shadows. It was then that Silver realized that these people were not here for him. Yes, they were all here for Mewtwo.
"Leave, now!" Mewtwo demanded. Silver was relieved to at last see the powerful psychic return, but he didn't waste any time getting up as quickly as he could and running.
