Chapter 2
Carter stood at the kitchen sink, pouring water into a small cup with the ever so familiar sound of the tap running. After the glass was about three quarters full, Carter stopped the tap, causing that also familiar and almost eerie silence that came after pouring a glass of water late at night. He gave the glass to Melanie, who briefly yet slowly began drinking. Carter watched Melanie drink the water, which brought back pleasant memories of doing the exact same thing before. Carter felt almost comforted that there was still someone alive who loved him, despite having lost most of the people who did too soon. Not only that, but he had someone who looked up to him. But then, Carter remembered that Melanie was the only person he had left. That his father was still dead. He turned away from his sister, frowning again. Suddenly, he felt a warmth on his leg. He turned to see Melanie hugging him, beginning to tear up.
"I want daddy to come back, Carter!" She says, now full on crying. Carter looked down at Melanie, beginning to cry himself. He hugged Melanie back.
"I know, I know. But he's not coming back. He's gone..." He says, making them both cry more. The siblings stayed in the embrace for an entire minute before finally releasing each other.
"But, hey, a-at least we still have each other, r-right?" Carter says to his still crying sister, wiping a tear off her face with his thumb.
"Y-yeah. We do." Melanie says, smiling at her brother before hugging him again.
"I love you, big brother."
"...I love you too, Melanie." Carter says, hugging Melanie back.

Carter now sat at the living room couch. He stared at the card, wondering why the officer gave it to him, what would happen if he ran an iron over it like the officer told him to. What if he was getting into something dangerous, something that would put Melanie in danger? But...what if it was something that could help him track down the creature that killed his father...and kill it...avenge him?! These thoughts overwhelmed the young man, his minds filled with thoughts of taking the shotgun and shooting the thing that killed his father, killing it! Carter had been mentally damaged-not disabled, damaged-many times before this, but his father's death was the thing that finally broke his mind. He was now mentally ill. Not retarted, but literally insane! But since his father was dead, there was no one to diagnose him. Because of this, the thought of killing the thing that killed his father didn't only excite him...
But it aroused him.
Carter entered Melanie's room to make sure she was asleep, which she was. Carter left Melanie's room and closed the door behind him. He went down the hall, entering his own room. He locked his door and sat on his bed, fantasizing of the day he'd finally get revenge...
