THE GIRL WHO CRIED WOLF!

THE GIRL WHO CRIED
WOLF / PROLOGUE

IF THERE'S ONE THING QUINN Morgan knows for certain, it's that she's definitely not the only freak about Forks!

Okay, she knows how that sounds coming from the town pariah, but she implores you to hear her out for a minute - ignore the popular girl propaganda and dig deep 'till you can see the real her, buried beneath the asphyxiating smog of unfiltered lies and radical accusations sired from the teenage imagination. Sink your teeth into the flesh of her character until your gums scrape against her deepest imperfections; learn to love them, there's definitely no shortage.

Quinn totally understands that she can be a tad eccentric, borderline off-putting at times, but that definitely doesn't make her any less of a sweetheart. Loyal co-captain of the volleyball team, dedicated cryptozoologist, slightly less dedicated student and don't forget regular employee of the month at her dad's antique shop! ( A completely unbiased decision, she can assure you. )

And, regardless of whatever bullshit rumours Jessica Stanley has spread about her this time, Quinn believes herself to be the epitome of rationality adrift in a town full of clueless lunatics - in her professional opinion, to disregard her theories is basically like walking the plank toward your own demise at the hands of a hungry kraken. Or, um, something along those lines. . .

Anyway! Quinn digresses. She often does. The point of her ramblings is that you can call her methods unorthodox and demean her conspiracies all you like - she knows deep in her heart that there's something lurking beneath the surface of Forks. You'd be a fool not to at least entertain the thought! In her books, all signs were pointing toward supernatural at the inexplicable disappearances around town and sudden campaigns for more blood drives, not to mention the serious spike in deer mortality rates in the surrounding woodland. Her concern skyrockets with every passing day, her incessant pacing burning holes in the floorboards of her bedroom.

There are a few explanations that spring to mind at first. Even Quinn has to admit that her extensive knowledge on cryptids and things that go bump in the night may have fuelled the investigation a little too powerfully at first, but she sets her head straight soon enough. She brushes past wild ideas of a Sasquatch in the Washington wilderness and stray chupacabras that have somehow made it all the way up north until she's finally whittled it down to the grandfather of modern ghost stories - the vampire. Why was that not her first thought? It's glaringly obvious, really. . .

Hey, don't call her crazy just yet! There's always method to her madness, even if it's subtle.

Quinn feels as giddy as a kid on Christmas morning. Everything is finally beginning to make sense, the puzzle pieces slotting together satisfactorily. With this shiny new revelation, her sleep dwindles to a thin thread and her overdue assignments metamorphose into forgotten memories. Though, luckily for Quinn, these noble sacrifices haven't been in vain. It's only after pointing numerous fingers and wasting half a dozen balls of red string upon her cork board that Quinn believes she's finally cracked the case!

The Cullens. How could she not have seen it sooner? Their abrupt disappearances at the first signs of the summertime sun, the awkward lunchtimes spent engaged in staring contests with their unusual food combinations, their jittery reactions to nosebleeds and paper cuts in class. . . why, the truth has been conspiring before her eyes all along! Besides, if a family drops everything to go camping that frequently, Quinn reckons that there's got to at least be some underlying psychological problems in the mix.

Weeks turn into months and her eagle eye on the Cullens never falters. Maybe she's becoming a little bit obsessed, though Quinn argues it's for the greater good! If all this subtle stalking means that she can prevent the vampire Von Trapps from killing anyone innocent, then so be it. She's an expert, she knows exactly what she's doing.

Or, rather, she thinks that she does until things slowly begin to intensify. The crescendo first begins with a brisk staccato note; the timely arrival of a pretty girl.

Like a moth's collision with flame, the newcomer only acts as a catalyst for Quinn's suspicions. She notices an immediate shift in the typical Cullen behaviour that she's become so accustomed to after documenting it all inside her journal as if she's scribbling observations for a nature documentary, significant schisms running through their typically steely composure - some more than others. It seems that the signs all point towards their emo eldest, Edward, his control wearing noticeably thinner and thinner the more she starts to pry. Quinn always found him a bit creepy if she's being completely honest, but his totally bizarre behaviour in first period Bio only confirmed her worst fears to be real. Very real.

Worry begins to eat away at her. It doesn't take her long to realise that she's willing to set aside her tinfoil hats and leave her conspiracy theories to gather dust if it means that she can put a stop to whatever Edweird is planning with that poor girl from Arizona. So, it's with a scatterbrain and heart of gold that Quinn officially decides the goal of her junior year is to save Bella Swan from the insatiable clutches of half a dozen vampires!

She just has to pluck up the courage to, y'know, talk to her first. . .
