“Arthur!” I yelled at him as I banged open his door, not in the mood for ceremonies.
“Yes Alpha?”
“Why don’t we search up past residences and properties owned by Vanessa and her family all the way to her great Grand Mother. They moved her when she was pregnant with Vanessa’s Grand Mother.”
“Got it Alpha.” He said, turning to his computer screens behind him and typing in some coding that I knew nothing about. Within a few minutes he had seven addresses pulled up for me including the cottage where they lived now and the house in which Vanessa and Katy lived with their parents. “Okay, so there seems to be nothing abnormal about the cottage and I doubt that Vanessa’s Grand Mother would want to raise suspicion within the neighborhood and their old house is now owned by your parents…”
“They bought that to give to Vanessa when she married for her and Katy to live in since it was closer to the College and High School then their Grand Mother’s house.”
“And then there are two within the city itself which will make it harder to search, but three in the outskirts that we could got to with our full werewolf forces due to the woods being ample cover.”
“We will start with the city as mass amounts of people could be hidden there and there is the sewer system, Vanessa had a dream about a tunnel and was in an underground place while Aretha took over right after Sam’s shift.”
“Well then, we should start with this one near the high school as there are three sewer entrances right next to the exits.” I left the room before he could say much more and I rounded up our search parties, knowing I would need Arthur to come along with us because he was the only one who could be the most help in finding her, besides myself, as her Protector. The job would take a few days, but it needed to be done in a hurry. The two week deadline was going to hit this Saturday, and it was only Monday. We would have to spend a day at each site and then leave behind a team of five men to keep watch in case there was any activity. The group consisted of the majority of our fighters as we needed to leave some behind.
“We will get our Luna back, and we will before she is forced to open the Huntress box. I will make sure she never leaves my side again, otherwise I will go on a rampage to get her back, not caring who is in my way. And if you care for the sanity of your Alpha you will help me make sure she never leaves again.” I got a resounding and hearty Yeah out of my my men in reply making my wolf bristle in pride at the knowledge that his pack would help him in anything and that they loved their Luna as much as he did. I made my way to the front door, but when I opened the door to the house, there was a package. I held my hand up to stop the group following behind me before bending down and giving it a whiff. It smelled normal so I picked it up and ripped open the packaging to find a small CD case. A yellow post it note was placed on it saying nothing more then the word, watch. I ran to the DVD player in the main room while the majority of the pack came in and watched me.
A video immediately opened up once the disk loaded and it was aimed at a metal door with not much light shining in. The door slammed open and some light slowly filtered in on a frightened Vanessa. She then spoke about the person holding the camera. “Wow. I haven’t seen that look since last night at dinner, Aretha.” I got angry at the fact that my mate was obviously being kept as a prisoner in her room and that they were forcing her to dress like they did. I looked closer at her and noticed bruises and cuts on her face and arms and I growled deeply, frightening some of the younger women and pups in the room.
“Well what did you expect to happen when my reputation is tarnished all because of your stupid actions. What you do, human, reflects on me as well.” The voice held a quite rage behind them and I worried for Vanessa in that moment, whose eyes narrowed in on Aretha.
“It doesn’t help that I was thrown in front of an angry werewolf without any other instruction besides ‘Don’t die’ rolling around in my head!” Vanessa yelled, the sound echoing of the rock walls. She was underground, just as we expected. I growled so loudly at the thought that she could have almost died due to their negligence that the pups ran from the room, as did most of their mother’s and the unmated females. Only the men remained to make sure I didn’t destroy everything before seeing the end of the video.
“Well then maybe I need to have some one on one training with you to make sure that this foolish mistake doesn’t happen again. When you open that box in 12 days I need you ready to fight. I need to be able to take over your body and not have to deal with you complaining about being sore or having scrapes and bruises all the time.” I quickly looked at the time stamp to find that the video had been shot about a week ago, meaning we only had five days to find Vanessa before she was forced into being a Huntress.
“I’m not complaining about the scrapes and bruises. I expected as much, but to put the futures Grand Master in as much danger as they did? To throw her in front as pretty much a sacrifice should not be acceptable.”
“Its called sink or swim. If you fought back instead of going into a fetal position you would have…”
“Died instantly for exposing my stomach to a clawed animal.” My wolf purred in pride at the fact that Vanessa was standing up for herself with pure logic. “If I had rolled the animal would have had access to my spinal cord, possibly causing permanent and life altering complications and if I had moved my fore arms from my face I would have left my head and neck vulnerable for a kill shot. I saved both of our lives by not fighting back and waiting for the back up I knew I had to come and help me.” Vanessa was standing proud, her arms crossed as she stared defiantly at Aretha, but I couldn’t help but wonder as to why I was being shown this video until I heard the next thing out of Aretha’s mouth.
“I am impressed. Most would have fought and lost a lot of blood resulting in a unneeded casualty in the field, but you where calm and level headed enough to think about survival, which is what this is all about, killing those monsters before they kill us.” I saw a small spark in Vanessa’s eyes that I think I only saw due to being her mate. I knew what she was planning, almost, with her next few words.
“I’m surprised you thought so little of your own human. Do you think that I still have an allegiance to them all because my mate was one of them?” I could hear a small murmur going around the room, but a growl form me quickly cut them off. “He was weak enough to be killed by a Huntress. He wouldn’t have been able to protect me anyway if he couldn’t stand up to a Huntress.” I knew everything she had just said was a lie, but it still struck a nerve with my wolf and I planned on taking my time in showing her just how wrong she was. A small chuckle could be heard from the video.
“Thank you for your…insightful looks into this matter, Vanessa.” The camera moved and Vanessa focused in on it, a little shocked, but with some understanding. She knew exactly what Aretha had been doing once she saw the video camera. From the new angle on the room the video had I could see through the mirror on the wall that Aretha had an almost deadly look on her face. “I am sure your mate’s old pack will be delighted to see this. Just think they lost their Alpha, and their Lina has turned against them! Think of how weal and vulnerable they will be.” The video focused in on Vanessa a bit more and I could see the cogs turning in Vanessa’s head as she tarted to act just like one of the vile Huntresses.
She walked up close to the camera so we could only see her face. I heard gasps around the room as they focused in on her eyes. Only one word came out of her mouth, but everyone knew what she truly meant. She might have said “Good,” but her eyes told a different story. Everyone had seen that look on her face before. She used it to defy and taunt me numerous times before and it always angered me, but this time, the fire in her eyes was completely gone. Instead it was replaced with a look that said, to me at least, ‘I’m fine, but hurry and find me.’ And I knew that I wouldn’t rest until I did. The video followed Vanessa as she slipped by and walked down the hallway away from Aretha. The video then turned around and focused on the ‘director.’
“Well, it seems that your precious little mate, thinks you’re dead and that your whole pack is weak and beneath her. I bet she would open the box tonight if we asked her. The clocks ticking and we would so like to have you there for the ceremonies when Vanessa opens the box and becomes the Grand Master. You would make the perfect first kill, Caleb. I have been dieing to feel your hot, life blood, spattered across my skin as I hear your last breath. When Vanessa becomes a Huntress your pack will be without a Luna and left vulnerable to our attack. We will have taken down the most powerful pack in America, without even really trying. Tick Tock, Caleb, Tick Tock.” The video blacked out and I was left angrier then ever. They had told her they killed me and I don’t even know if she truly believed it or not. I knew I had to find her and fast, the fate of my pack, and consequentially all of the packs, were resting on her not opening that box.
I rounded up the teams and we headed out for our first night of stakeouts. I squashed any ideas that Vanessa had turned against us completely and made sure no one angered me further, unless they wanted to become a rouge. I could feel myself becoming slightly more unstable as the minutes ticked by. If I didn’t have my mate with me soon, then there was going to be a massacre. I would make sure that every Huntress who stood in my way would be killed and I would forcibly take Vanessa back home and lock her up if I had to keep her from killing everyone. My mate was coming home whether she liked it or not!
