The Daring Dangers

The week had been a little stressful to say the least. Lila seemed to pick up on the fact that we were going through a rough patch as friends. However, her attempts to drive us further a part only brought us closer together.

"What is up with them?" Alya asked pointing to at us as we ate dinner the hotel provided as none of us felt like cooking.

"I heard that after Chloe and Nino got together it made Marinette jealous," Lila 'whispered'.

"What do you mean? I thought she was with the one guy who she always seems to hang around," Max said.

"The homeless looking man? That was all an act to make Nino jealous. She always had a crush on him aka your boyfriend."

"Are you serious?"

"Why do you think Nino came to the rescue when you got upset at Marinette once? I am pretty sure they had something going on while you two dated."

"To think I thought she was my friend."

"If Nino and Marinette were secretly together, then where does Chloe fit in this?" Juleka asked.

"Well, things ended once Nino saw her get close to Adrien. Upset that things ended, Marinette begged the homeless guy to pretend to be her boyfriend to make Nino jealous. Obviously it didn't work since he stooped low even to date Chloe."

"What if Nino and Chloe are acting and he is just using her to make Marinette jealous?" Ivan theorized.

While their conversation was going on, everyone at the table were exchanging glances trying not to laugh. I however was the one who broke out laughing once Mylene said, "I can't believe we were so blind."

"Nino, why didn't you tell me we once dated?" I asked.

"I am so sorry Mari. I didn't know you were as blind as they are."

"I should be the one apologizing for getting in between your secret relationship."

"How could you? I thought you were my best friend dude."

"How could you use me to make Marinette jealous? Here I thought you cared about me. And you using Jason? That's low."

"Everything I once knew was a lie," Kim said shaking his head in disapproval.

"Keeping track of that story hurts my head," Alix added.

"It is so simple. I apparently dated my old friend's ex in secret which I had no idea about while they dated. However, he dumped me because Adrien became my partner in crime. Jealous much. Then we come to Gotham and I picked a random unhoused dude to pretend to be my boyfriend to make Nino jealous. I guess it worked since he is using Chloe to make me jealous."

"Is it working?" Nino asked.

"So bad. That's why I helped you two get together. I just wanted to be jealous."

"That makes so much sense," Nathaniel said.

"I might have to go to Jason and tell him everything."

"Wouldn't he know though?"

"Not if I didn't tell him Adrien."

"So you just went up to him and said be my boyfriend out of no where?"

"Of course, but since Nino learned my plan, I'll just have to cut Jay loose which is too bad since I really like him."

"No, you don't really like him. You love him," Kim teased.

"Of course I love that big dork."

"There's no way he is a dork."

"Once you hear him rant about Pride and Prejudice for over thirty minutes and talk about how cool his grandpa is, you wouldn't think that."

"So he really likes one book and his grandfather. That does not make him a dork."

"Maybe I should bring him around more often and ask him random questions about things he's passionate about."

"Just do it tomorrow when we see him," Adrien suggested.

"No. There is another guy I really want to meet. He's the reason we even get to go."

"Do tell."

"Not with people listening in."

——

The next day, our bus pulled up to Haly's Circus. Just like The Daily Planet, Haly doesn't normally do tours, however, Dan Danger managed to convince him. Getting off the bus, I began looking around for the acrobat, but he was no where to be seen.

"Looking for Danny Boy?" Jason asked me getting off his bike.

"You should know that I really enjoyed watching videos of him perform," I replied.

"He is just a showoff."

"That's not what people say after the watch him. Now, do you know where he is?"

"Last I heard from him was he was changing. Don't you have a certain ring master to talk to first."

"Yes!" I exclaimed now looking for Haly.

"I can't believe she is so happy to be at the circus," Alya said standing to the side.

"She'd probably feel right at home with the freak show," Lila replied.

"God, they are the worse," Jason said slinging his arm around my shoulders.

"You aren't the one who has to be around them almost all day every day."

"My poor Pixie."

"And she is still leading him on," Ivan pointed out.

"How are you leading me on?"

"Apparently Nino and I once dated but broke up after I became friends with Adrien. In order to make him jealous, I am pretending to date you."

"And here I thought you loved me."

"I do," I replied grabbing his hand.

"You two are gross," Adrien said.

"I know right. Love is just so gross. That's why I am using him."

"You aren't going to let that story go are you?"

"If you let go of the fact you were called eye candy #2, then I will."

"I am so much better looking than Dick," Jason said causing me to sigh.

"And that is my cue to go to Haly."

"Hi. I'm Marinette Dupain-Cheng," I said once I reached Haly who was standing by one of the circus signs.

"It is great to meet you. I have heard great things about you and some of your classmates from Mr. Wayne," Haly replied shaking my hand.

"That's always good to hear. I was wondering how you wanted to do the tour."

"I can quickly show you around. Some areas we'll quickly pass as I don't want to ruin the magic of tonight's show."

"Sounds great! I am really looking forward to it."

"That's always good to hear. I also saw that your class got tickets to the best seats."

"No way!"

"Old Dickie and Bruce must really care for you all."

"This is so cool," I muttered.

"I am glad to meet such a big fan."

"I've always wanted to attend, but when you came to Europe, you were a bit too far from Paris to go."

"I'll see if there might be anything I could do next time we go overseas."

"This just keeps getting better."

"It will get even better once I get to show you around," Haly laughed walking over to the class with me.

"And we'll end the tour with a look in the tent. I'll show you where you will be sitting tonight," Haly said walking through the tent opening.

Not paying attention I bumped into someone. Looking over I saw it was Dick in his Dan Danger outfit.

"Sorry Dick," I said.

"Hey Blueberry," he replied.

"Did she seriously call one of the performers a dick?" Alya asked Lila.

"If she keeps this up, we'll end up getting kicked out. She'll ruin everything," Lila said.

"Blueberry?" I asked ignoring them.

"I can't give you a nickname? I thought after all this time we reached this stage off our friendship."

"She knows him?" Rose said baffled.

"I'm just curious where you got that from."

"Has no one told you that your hair almost looks blue in certain lighting?"

"You're the first."

"You're also small, so Blueberry."

"I am going to ignore the fact you called me short. So what's up with you? You seem upset."

"I'm good."

"I can read people pretty well, so no lying."

"Fine. I might not get to perform tonight."

"How come?"

"After the whole Flying Grayson accident, Haly doesn't let acrobats perform alone. I know that the Graysons were a family act, so it may not make sense. But he thinks it may make things safer and prevent an accident like that from happening again," Dick said sadly.

"Is your partner sick or injured?" I asked.

"Sick, and no one else knows the routine."

"I'm sorry."

"Thanks, but there's nothing you can really do. You should catch up with your class."

"How difficult is the routine?"

"You'd need several years of practice under your belt to pull it off smoothly. Why?"

"I may be no Danger or Grayson, but I'm a pretty good acrobat."

"There's no way Bruce would even allow that even if you could pull it off."

"Who says he has to know?"

"Haly wouldn't allow it either."

"You wear a mask, so no one could tell it was me. Plus, you are co-owner."

"I can't ask you to do that."

"You're not asking. I'm offering."

"I can't believe I am saying this. Once the tour is over, show me what you got. I'll make sure there is a net below just in case."

"Yes! Performing in Haly's Circus!"

"It's a maybe."

"Once you see me, it will be a yes."

"You're making me regret it."

"I promise you won't. Think you would be able to get me an outfit to do it in though. Can't exactly fly wearing this."

Dick looked over my outfit and smiled. "Wonder Woman huh? It looks nice."

"It's not all out like I did Monday, but yeah."

"I got you covered. Now catch up with them and figure out an excuse."

"Thanks Danny Boy."

"What was that about?" Adrien asked once I was by his side.

"Dan Danger's partner is sick," I vaguely replied.

"You asked to fill her place."

"Maybe, but I have to show him my awesome skills I picked up these last few years."

"And how are you going to pull everything off? Mr. Wayne and Haly wouldn't let you."

"A mask."

"What about a mask?" Jason asked seemingly coming from his own conversation with Dick.

"Talking about the mask the Dangers wear."

"And what about it?"

"How amazing I would look wearing it."

"Dick was just telling me about how his usual partner is sick. You offered to fill in their place didn't you?"

"I have to show him my moves and have him teach me the routine, but yes."

"Just be careful."

"You're ok with her performing a complex routine with no net?" Adrien asked.

"I can't control what Marinette does. I also know about her other job and how she could pull it off."

"All I need is a little help sneaking off to actually do it."

"Good thing me and Adrien are going to cover for you."

"I'm just baffled that Dick even agreed."

"He is a different person when he gets on the trapeze. He feels free when he is up there. Whenever B and Dick fought, he would cool off by doing old routines he'd do with his parents."

"So what's the plan?" Adrien questioned finally giving in.

——

I snuck into the tent and saw Dick standing by the trapeze holding a bundle of clothes.

"You know if we get found out, we are going to be in so much trouble," Dick said.

"Then don't get caught," I replied taking the clothes from him. "I'll be right back."

"How did you know my size?" I asked walking back in.

"What is it you say? Faith, trust, and pixie dust."

"Which are all needed in order to perform."

"Exactly. Now, I am going to do some basic moves and want you to copy. They'll slowly get harder if you keep getting them down."

"Yes sir," I replied causing Dick to roll his eyes.

"I beg of you to never call me sir again."

"Yes ma'am."

"I should have seen that coming."

"You did walk right into it."

"You are so much like Jay. Anyway, if things go well, we'll begin performing together. If we don't work well together or it's choppy, then we can't perform."

"We will."

"And they say I can be cocky."

"Once I show you we can work well together, then you'll teach me the routine you planned on doing with your old partner."

"Yes, but let's stretch before we even think about getting up there."

"Yes ma'am, and before you say anything, you never said I couldn't call you that."

"Just try and keep up."

"Who's the cocky one now?"

——

The afternoon contained thirty minutes of stretching and forty-five minutes of individual moves before Dick and I took a break.

"So am I proving myself?" I asked.

"I'm impressed. You weren't lying when you said you were good. I honestly think we can pull this off," Dick said.

"And who is this?" Haly asked breaking up our conversation.

"If things turn out alright, my new partner for tonight."

"Where did she come from? I don't know of any great acrobats in Gotham."

"I'm not a show off like Dan is."

"You definitely have the same type of personality as Dan when it comes to performing Marinette."

"So much for keeping things secret," I muttered.

"Does Mr. Wayne know what you are up to?"

"I can't have you perform if a parent or temporary guardian doesn't know. I wouldn't want there to be any trouble that may even get the circus shut down."

"But you let me and my friends perform a couple of times without any permission," Dick interjected.

"Because I knew it was you. You can't hide a Grayson when it comes to being on the trapeze."

"But you didn't know my friends."

"I knew they were there for a reason."

"And I am here to make sure Dick gets to fly."

"I'm sorry, but this situation is a bit different than the one you are talking about Dick. If I get written permission from your parents and have you and them sign some papers, then I'll allow it."

"They're in Paris. There is no way they could sign any papers by the time the show happens tonight."

"I can have lawyers draw up some papers and send them digitally. If they say no, then I am sorry. I know how much you two want to do this, but I don't want to put anyone's lives in danger. I'll let you two know what they say. For now, stay off the trapeze. You can use some of the other equipment in the meantime."

"You got it," Dick said.

"And I'm not too worried about your parents saying no. I'm not sure how, but I think it will all be alright."

Haly gave us a nod before walking away to his office.

"Don't blame yourself if your parents do say no. Things happen for a reason."

"Let me call them and talk to them. Haly is right. I'm not too worried about them saying no."

"Don't lie to them in order to get them to say yes though."

"I won't. Let me call them really fast."

"I'll be here waiting."

It took five rings before my mamma finally answered the phone.

"Marinette, we are a little busy over here. You should know we get a rush around this time," she said annoyed.

"I'm sorry. The time zone difference threw me off, but I promise I'll be quick," I replied hiding the hurt in my voice.

"What is it then?"

"I need you to sign a permission slip."

"Can't exactly do that from Paris."

"Don't worry. It is going to be sent to you digitally."

"What are you asking me to sign?"

"Tonight my class is going to the circus and they offered to let me play a role in it."

"Is the role dangerous?"

"No. I'll be safe."

"I don't care then. I'll sign it once I get the email. Anything else?"

"That was all."

"Have fun and remember to check the time next time you decide to call."

"Of course. I love," I started but was cut off due to my momma ending the call.

"Sabine agreed to sign the papers," I said running over to Dick.

"And there was no lying in order to make sure she does so?"

"No. I was honest. In fact, she really didn't seem to care. I guess that was a good thing in this case."

"Your own mother didn't seem to care that you were going to be performing hundreds of feet in the air with no net to catch you. I'm sorry."

"Don't be. There's nothing we can do about her lack of caring."

"Blueberry, you shouldn't act like it is a good thing though. A parent is supposed to care about their child."

"They should, but for so many children, their parents just don't. Haly should be coming back any moment saying we are good to go. How about we mess around with the other equipment while we wait," I suggested trying to change the subject.

"Sure," Dick sighed realizing I didn't want to talk about it anymore.

——

"So good news. Your parents agreed. All I need you to do is carefully read through the papers and sign. We'll have to do so with witnesses and lawyers in the room though. There's nothing hidden. I just want to make sure things are clear," Haly said.

"Let's do this!" I exclaimed.

It was only an half hour process of reading and signing before Dick and I were on the trapeze again.

"We are going to do some simple catches and throws and work our way up just like last time. Tell me if you need to take a break or no longer want to."

"Don't worry Dick. I got this. Let's fly!"

"You might have too much energy even for me."

"Guess you are finally learning you're ancient."

"I am not. I only six or so years older than you."

"See. Ancient."

Adrien's POV

"Why did Marinette stay behind?" Chloe asked once we were back in the girl's room.

"She's helping Haly and some of the other performers out. Don't worry though. We'll see her there," I replied.

"What if there's an akuma or something?"

"Bug will do what she always does. Sneak away and transform. She'll pick us up and then we'll go to Paris to kick some butt."

"And what was up with her and that performer?" Nino asked.

"You mean Dan Danger the acrobat who Marinette has always wanted to see?"

"But they were talking like they knew each other. Expect those in the circus, no one knows who he is."

"Maybe she does."

"If she does, then you do too. Who is it?"

"He wears a mask for a reason Kim. Dan Danger doesn't want people to know who he truly is."

"But you and Mari know."

"Because she is one of the best detectives out there. Maybe not Batman level, but she's up there."

"Mari called him Dick, so the one tour guide," Nathaniel said.

"Dick Grayson-Wayne?" Alix asked.

"He is the last Flying Grayson, so he was the skills. I'm not sure why Dick would hide his identity though."

"So much for secret identities," Adrien muttered. "I know you won't, but don't mention it to anyone at all or out in public just in case someone over hears you."

"Tell that to Marinette who called him Dick in front of everyone."

"I will admit it was a careless slipup on her part. Probably used to seeing him almost every other day and didn't pay attention."

"Still weird that she became good friends with the Waynes," Chloe said.

"It's her magnetic personality."

"The magnetic personality that would probably draw in her crush Red Hood."

Marinette's POV

"So what's the verdict?" I asked Dick.

"I'll take back those clothes," he replied causing my smile to disappear.

"But I thought we did great together. I even got the routine down in only a short amount of time. I'm no Flying Grayson, but I thought that I could be a Danger."

"I'll take back those clothes and get you a Danger uniform."

"You phrased it like that on purpose. The name Dick does suit you."

"I'm going to take that as a compliment."

"You should. I totally didn't mean anything bad by it."

"Just come with me."

"So did you just happen to have a Danger uniform that was magically my size?"

"You just so happen to be the same size and build as my usual partner."

"They aren't going to get upset with me taking their spot right?"

"I talked to her about it before we even began practicing. She was ok with it since she knew how much performing and being a Daring Danger means to me."

"So if you're Dan, who would I be?"

"That is for you to choose."

"I think Dawn goes good with Dan, but someone already used that name. I wouldn't want to take something else."

"You change and I'll text her to see if they are fine with you using that name," Dick said handing me my new uniform.

"I'll think of another name just in case."

"Sounds great, but I'm sure they would be fine with it especially since they only used it for two days."

"If you say so," I said running to the changing room.

It took only a few minutes for me to change. Looking in the mirror, I first saw a girl pretending to be someone she wasn't. I may have experience flying as Ladybug, but I was no trapeze artist. Then I remembered how it felt doing the routine with Dick. There was a sense of freedom I hadn't felt in a long time.

"You took great," I heard Tikki say in my head. With so many people around, I didn't want to risk anyone seeing her, however, she was kept close in case Paris needed me.

"I can see why Dick comes back to the circus ever few years," I muttered. "Soaring through the air feels magical. There is a difference from how I do it in Paris to what I am doing tonight. The sense of danger actual makes me feel at peace."

"Just be careful. There won't be a net to catch you if anything happens."

"That's the peaceful danger I am talking about."

"Dawn, you done in there?" I heard Dick call out.

"Yeah," I replied opening the door.

"You truly look like a Daring Danger. Let's practice once more, so you can get a feel of what it is like in the suit. Then we'll do it without the net. People will be below just in case something happens, but it won't be like that tonight. If you're uncomfortable, then tell me. You don't have to push yourself to do something you don't want to do."

"It's the thrill of the danger. Danger can be peaceful if you know how to be safe."

"I understand what you mean. Now, let's go."

"She really was ok with me borrowing the name of Dawn?"

"Of course. She just wanted you to be careful."

"I had the best teacher. Everything will turn out ok."

——

"Did the suit feel comfortable while you performed?" Dick asked.

"Definitely. I know it's really your partner's, but for a moment it felt like it was made for me."

"Good to hear. If everything goes smoothly this run through, we will light the hoop on fire and remove the net if you are ok with that."

"Of course. Is my hair put up well for that though? I'd prefer for it to not be caught on fire."

"Your ponytail is the hairstyle we normally use, and due to it being on the shorter side, you don't have to worry about it."

"Then let's do this."

"You really do like the thrill of the danger."

"What's life without a little danger?"

"Safe."

"No, it's boring."

"You're sounding like Jay again."

"I'm taking that as a compliment."

"As you should. You ready?"

"I was born ready."

Partway through the routine, Dick did his famous quadruple flip before I caught him. I threw him back to his bar before performing my own flip. It was supposed to be a triple flip, but I decided to take a risk. I had watched his form throughout our practice and knew exactually what I need to do in order to do a quadruple flip myself. The timing of me letting go would be different, but it was only by two seconds.

Counting down in my head, I let go. Dick's eyes grew wide as he realized my early release. That was the thing that scared me. I didn't want him to be concerned, but I knew there was no time to back down. The net was still there to catch me if anything did go wrong.

Call it luck or call it skill, but four flips later, I was caught by Dick who continued the routine. Besides that one time, I didn't do anything stupid and did everything like I was supposed to.

"How did you do that?" Dick asked landing beside me instead of across my on the other platform.

"I'm sorry. It was stupid," I said looking down.

"Maybe, but I asked how did you do that?"

"I've been observing your form and timing all afternoon. I did the calculations and took the risk. It was stupid, but please don't change your mind about me performing. I will never try it again."

"I'm not going to. I was caught off guard, but at least you did so with the net still up. I do however ask that you do not try that again for now. Once we practice together more, I want to see if you can pull it off again."

"Of course. I am sorry for causing you any concern though. I will stick to the triple flip and not do anything stupid. I also don't think I would ever preform that in front of a crowd. There is only one known person in the world, and I want to keep it that way."

"You don't want to be a show off?"

"It is a move that only The Flying Graysons can do. I'm not one and would never want to take such a special thing away."

"Let me tell you a story," Dick said taking a seat.

"Not what I was expecting as a response but ok," I replied sitting next to him.

"Many theorize that the multiverse is a real thing. I do as well all because of a weird but vivid dream I had. In one of those alternate worlds, The Flying Todds existed. Jason was actually a part of it. They had the same talent us Graysons have. When you first came to the manor, you called yourself a Todd. If you don't think you'd make a great Flying Grayson, then maybe you're supposed to be a Flying Todd, however, I know my family would be honored to have someone like you join us."

"Thanks Dick, but for now, I'm fine with being a Daring Danger. I have to know though, how did the Dangers come to be."

"Haly was being accused of crimes he didn't commit. I wanted to prove his innocence. In order to do so, me and my friends went undercover and joined the circus as The Daring Dangers."

"How did you know Haly was innocent? Couldn't there be a chance that your emotions and personal opinions clouded your judgement?"

"It was a gut feeling which I learned to never ignore. Sure, there could have been a chance he was guilty, but there was also a chance Haly was innocent. It was a risk I was willing to take."

"I get gut feelings. Mine might not be as big as being a detective, but it's stupid not ignore them even if they are wrong."

"I feel like you'd make a great hero with your big heart and brains."

"Same goes for you. Now, are you ready to light the hoop on fire and remove the net?"

"As long as you don't try to give me a heart attack again."

——

It was another hour of practice before I headed back to the hotel. There was about two hours to rest and eat along with taking a shower.

"So how was helping the performers?" Nino asked as I sat down my bag on the counter.

"It was a lot of fun but tiring. I got to meet almost everyone, but they still tried to keep their acts a secret. They didn't want to spoil the fun," I replied.

"You looked exhausted though. You didn't push yourself did you?" Chloe questioned.

"Maybe a little, but it was worth it. I may have also seen Dan Danger practice his act. The way he flew could take someone's breath away."

"He was a Flying Grayson at one point," Nathaniel pointed out.

"I gave everything away by calling him Dick. It was stupid and careless of me. Promise not to tell anyone?"

"Like you'd have to ask," Alix said.

"Now go take care of yourself. You're all sweaty and tired. It also looks like you need to get something to eat," Adrien said.

"You don't have to tell me twice."

——

"So how's my beautiful girlfriend feeling?" Jason asked as we made our way into the tent.

"Really excited. Today Dan and I learned he isn't the only one who can do a quadruple flip," I whispered in his ear.

"I knew you were talented."

"Will I get a kiss for luck before I sneak off?"

"I'd give you a kiss whenever you ask."

"I'd ask for one know but the whole class is here."

"And?"

"True," I said giving him a quick peck.

"It's rude to tease a guy."

"I saw Mr. Wayne in the corner of my eye."

"The guy saw us make out."

"That was so embarrassing."

"Adorable how you're hiding yourself away in my chest," Jason said pulling me close once we sat down.

"Embarrassing."

"When do you sneak off?"

"Thirty minutes before we go on in order to have enough time to stretch and go over everything."

"How'd you get your parents to agree? Dickie Bird told me Haly made you and your parents sign paper work."

"It was a quick phone call about me asking if I could perform. All my mom did was ask if it was dangerous which I replied with no."

"I think performing a trapeze act that you learned in the span of a couple hours without a net dangerous."

"Not if you have experience which I do have."

"No doubt about it, but any sane person would think it's dangerous."

"We're all a little mad here."

"Does B know?"

"So we need to be extra sneaky."

"Dawn Danger won't let anyone stop her from flying tonight."

"I'll make sure she gets to. Besides Adrien, do the rest of your friends know?"

"It's a surprise, but the moment I step out they'll be able to tell."

"I also have to make sure no friends come running after you. Good to know."

"They wouldn't run after me. Maybe give me a scolding as they watch me climb and then in person, but that's it."

"I'm excited to see it," Jason said kissing the top of my head.

"I'm excited to show a Flying Todd," I replied.

"A Flying Todd?"

"Dick never told you about The Flying Todds."

"I'm so confused."

"In a different earth, there was The Flying Todds who were just as talented as The Flying Graysons. You were actually a member."

"The Flying Todds sounds weird."

"Dick says that I'm an honorary member since I'm a Todd who does acrobats."

"You're not a Todd. Yet."

"I'm a Todd even if we have only dated for a couple weeks."

"Marinette Todd does have a nice ring to it."

"Exactly."

——

Haly's Circus had been performing for about forty five minutes before I was time for me to slip away.

"If anyone asks, I went to the bathroom and after a certain amount of time mention how I probably got distracted talking to a performer I met earlier. I'll see you soon," I whispered to Jason.

"Will do. Be careful," Jason said.

"Always."

"Go get them Dawn."

Jason and I shared a quick kiss before I ran off to meet Dick at the changing room.

"Hey Blueberry. You ready?" he asked.

"Born ready. I even have the uniform hidden underneath my clothes. I just need to get out of them and put a mask on."

"I'll let you do so."

I quickly ran into the changing room and undressed stashing my normal clothes into my bag.

"You ready?" Tikki asked.

"A little nervous, but the moment I step out and feel the fresh air, I'll be perfectly fine," I replied slipping my mask on.

"I'll be with Adrien."

"Just get there quickly and without being seen."

"Will do. Break a leg."

"Thanks."

I gave Tikki a kiss on the top of her head before watching her zoom out. Taking a deep breath, I left the changing room myself and walked towards Dick.

"Remember to call me Dan. There's too many people around to say anything else."

"Of course Danny Boy."

"Last chance to back out though. Don't push yourself."

"I'm good. I want to do this."

"Then let's stretch and get warmed up.

——

After about twenty minutes, I got a bad gut feeling. It came so suddenly that I felt like I was punched.

"Dan?"

"What's up?"

"I don't mean to cause any concern, but I got a bad feeling."

"What do you mean?"

"I'm not sure. Everything is completely ready and the equipment is working properly?"

"I got the feeling you are mentioning earlier, so I did my own check up beforehand. Everything was perfect and no one has gone over there since then."

"That puts my mind at ease. All those be carefuls may have gotten to me."

"Do you want to stop?"

"No, it's gone away. I thought I should've told you because they should never go ignored."

"Which is smart. Thanks for letting me know. We are on in five. I'll head to my entrance while you go to yours. Haly will say our names and that's when we'll start."

"Got it," I said before running to my spot.

The gut feeling I previously had was almost completely gone, but still there deep down. I trust Dick, but I also trust my gut. I'll just have to be extra vigilant and cautious.

"And now welcome The Daring Dangers!" Haly announced.

Dick and I ran in from opposite sides of the tent do a series of flips until we met in the middle. Our hands intertwined before we gave a quick bow. I was thrown into the air and landed on top of Dick's hands, one foot in each.

I smiled a waved at the crowed ending it with looking in Jason's eyes which were filled with love. He had the biggest grin I had seen. Any bad feeling I had earlier was gone. Jason had put me at ease.

Dick threw me into the air once more as I did a series of twirls landing right in front of him.

"Ready?" Dick asked in a whisper.

"Born ready," I replied.

"Then I'll meet you at the top."

Once more Dick and I did flips until we reached the base on opposite pillars. In sync, we climbed our way to the top.

"Get ready to watch Dan and Dawn Danger flys!" Haly exclaimed giving us our cue to go.

We ran and leapt to grab our bars. The time to fly was now. Haly would announce details of our acts. Years ago, Dan Danger had done a performance involving details of space and planets. This time, the act revolved around the topic of the elements.

Once the dancing fire was announced, the hoop above us came to life with flame burning bright. A gasp could be heard throughout the crowd. Then it was silent as if everyone was holding their breath. I counted down from five before I let go and went through the flaming hoop.

Dick caught me with a smile beaming on his face, he really was meant to fly. It was after I was thrown through the hoop once more where things went downhill.

I caught the bar I was perviously on and prepared myself to caught Dick after he did his famous quadruple flip. Once in the correct position, Dick leapt through has hands landing in mine. It was the snap of the ropes Dick was previously on and them falling to the ground below us that caused a scream from a child in the crowd.

I looked down at Dick to see the previous smile gone. Instead, terror was written everywhere. He was about to be stuck in a horrible memory that I needed to snap him out of.

"Dan!" I yelled but he didn't respond and his body began going limp.

"Dick! Come back to me. You're becoming heavy!"

We were also losing momentum. If I didn't throw him to the platform behind me, we were going to be stuck.

"I don't need a professional trapeze artist. I need a trained vigilante who knows what to do in the tightest of situations. I need Nightwing!" I yelled at him knowing he was the only one who could hear me.

"I'm here," Dick said shocked at my comment but no longer distance.

"I'm going to throw up to the platform behind me. Next swing, get ready to catch me Dirty Dancing style," I instructed.

"Got it!"

I threw him just like planned but grew terrified myself as I heard sounds like a rope about to snap above me. Once I was close enough, I leap from the bar having to perform a quadruple flip of my own in order to reach Dick's arms he held above him.

"Spin in a circle twice. Then put me down. We have to calm down the crowd."

Behind me, I heard the bar fall to the ground. If I was there for a second longer, I would be here. It would have been a repeat of The Flying Graysons.

"How'd you know?" Dick asked once I was on my feet standing beside him.

"Batman isn't the only great detective. Now, you head out. I'll do flips as I make my way to Haly. I'll briefly talk to him before making my way back to you."

"You're born to be a leader."

"Thanks, but you need to sit down soon. You are shaking and we're still quite a few feet from the ground."

"I'll meet you at the Daring Dangers' train cart."

"Got it."

While Dick ran to the exit I had previously used as an entrance, I made my way to Haly performing flips and trips as I went. To end, I landed in a splits in front of Haly.

"Continue the show like normal. I'll meet Dan at the train cart and take care of him. Pretend everything is ok," I muttered loud enough for him to hear.

"You did wonderful my dear," he replied before looking at the crowd with a smile. "And that was Dawn and Dan Danger! Give them a round of applause!"

I stood up and bowed looking through the crowd once more. I saw tons of terrified faces, but none were as bad as my friends and even worse Jason. With a smile one my face, I gave them a quick shake of my head telling them to stay there. Of course, Jason didn't listen and got up to follow me out the tent. Mr. Wayne was right behind them.

"Thank you! Until next time my loves!" I yelled as I made my way out the tent.

Once out of view, I ran to Dick where he sat curled up in a ball.

"I took care of it. Haly is continuing to calm the crowd down. It will all be ok," I said sitting next to him.

"Your gut feeling. We should have listened to it. I thought it was just a late response to the one I had earlier. Everything was fine when I check," Dick muttered.

"Neither of us could have predicted this would happen. All that matters is we're safe."

"I put you in danger by letting you perform."

"I practically begged you to let me. It's not on you."

"Dick!" I heard Mr. Wayne yell.

"Dad!" Dick said running into his arms.

"I got you son. You're safe now."

I watched as Mr. Wayne held Dick as tight as possible afraid that if he let go his son would be gone. I couldn't help but smile at the loving scene. It was caused by something terrible, but it was there.

"It's going to be ok. I'll keep you safe."

Behind the father and son, I saw Jason running over two water bottles in his hand and a look of both terror and relief on his face.

"You're not hurt are you?" Jason asked once he reached me.

"I'm fine. Just a little shaken," I replied taking a water from him.

"You almost died. I thought I was going to lose you."

"I'm still here. I told you before, I'm hard to get rid of."

It was until then Mr. Wayne looked up at me his eyes going wide.

"Marinette!"

"Dawn Danger," I corrected.

"Pix, it's useless to try and hide it," Jason said pulling me into a hug.

"I know. I just want him to focus on Dick. He is the one who needs Mr. Wayne."

"How did you manage to remain calm during all that? I saw you talking to Dick and instructing him. I couldn't hear what you said, but without you, he wouldn't be here."

"I'm a leader," I told Jason. "I've learned how to stay calm in situations like that."

"Dick is a leader too."

"He was frozen and reliving his last night as a Flying Grayson."

"You can break down. You don't need to pretend to be ok. I have you."

"I know. I'm too in shock to do anything but stand here and talk to you."

"You're beginning to shake."

"I never noticed," I said in a small voice.

Jason picked me up and brought me back to the train cart Dick and I were previously sitting in. I was still in his arms but was now able to see Dick and Mr. Wayne.

"Is Dick going to be ok?" I asked Jason.

"Eventually, but it's like you said. The guy just relived his worst memory. He needs his dad right now."

"It is my fault this happened. I kept pushing Dick to let me perform with him. If I didn't, neither of us would have been up there. Neither of us would have gone through that. I'm supposed to know what to do. I'm supposed to know when enough is enough. I should have stopped."

"You can't blame yourself," Jason whispered pulling me closer as I was beginning to cry. "It's neither of yours fault. Neither of you knew."

"I should have. I am supposed to have all the answers and know everything."

"Not even Batman knows everything. No one is supposed to have all the answers."

"Marinette," Mr. Wayne called out snapping out of my thoughts.

"Yes Mr. Wayne?"

"Don't get mad at her Bruce," Dick said.

"I need to know how you were able to even perform."

"I got permission from my parents and practically begged Dick to let me. His partner was sick meaning he couldn't perform. I offered to take her place mostly because I missed getting to fly."

"Your parents agreed to let you perform without a net and go through hoops of fire?"

"They signed papers and everything. I'm sorry for putting your son in danger."

"You saved him."

"After I put him in that position."

"Stop blaming yourself Blueberry. We both knew the risks, and you didn't put me there. I gave you several chances to back out. Both of us wanted to be up there," Dick said taking a seat on the other side of me.

"We will talk about this later. For now, we should get you all out of here. You need rest."

"I need to get dressed and head back to my friends. They're worried. I have to reassure them that I'm fine. I also want to check on the crowd. Everyone was terrified."

"That's not your responsibility Marinette."

"Maybe not the crowd, but you don't know my dynamic with my friends Mr. Wayne. It is my responsibility. Was I able to calm the crowd down when I went to Haly though?"

"The crowd was calmer since they knew you two were ok. Haly is currently doing everything he can to distract them from what just happened," Mr. Wayne replied.

"Good. Let me change. I'll see you three later."

I grabbed my bag which I had previously stashed in the cart and walked off to the changing room.

Jason's POV

"She's seriously going back?" Dick asked out loud.

"Like she said, you two don't know the dynamic and how stubborn Pix is," I replied wanting to chase after her but knew she needed a moment alone.

"So why wasn't I made aware that a student who is in my care was taking your partner's spot tonight?" Bruce asked both Dick and I.

"Because you'd say no and not let her. Trust me. Once she makes up her mind, it's almost impossible to change it."

"What would her parents' say if things didn't manage to turn out this way?"

"That they're idiots for taking their child for granted and treating her the way they have been. That they haven't been actually parents for the last year or so. That they are blind for not actually listening and paying attention to their daughter."

"What do you mean?"

"Exactly what I said Bruce. What do you plan on saying if they do actually act like parents for once? Saying you were unaware Marinette was performing won't look good for you even if it's the truth."

"It's something for me to worry about."

"Is Marinette ok?" Damian asked running up to us.

"A little shaken," I replied not wanting to scare or worry the kid more than he already was. "How are her friends?"

"You are worried about her friends when she almost died?"

"She's worried about her friends."

"They keep looking at the entrances rather wanting to bolt out of the tent or waiting for her to come back in. The second option seems idiotic. They cannot expect her to go back after what just happened."

"That's exactly what I'm doing Lil' D," Marinette said walking over to stash her bag.

"But you almost died. You should be more focused on you."

"I'm fine. I should eat, but when I tried I couldn't keep it down. I'll try again when I get back to the hotel."

"Back to the hotel? Why go back there instead of going somewhere where you are safer? What if there was foul play and someone wanted to hurt you and Grayson?"

"Glad I'm not the only one who thinks foul play might be a possibility, but I need to pretend it wasn't me up there. Not going could put me in more danger than if I did."

"What are you talking about? Has someone been harassing you recently?" Bruce asked.

"I'm good, but the equipment was fine when Dick checked on it before people began arriving. He said everything looked perfect. Then we almost died while performing. Things aren't lining up. I'm not a detective though, but I trust my gut that something is up. Maybe someone could bring it up to Batman. The sooner the better. Evidence could be disposed of during now and when he gets on the scene. Dick can keep an eye out on people here to see if anyone is acting suspicious. I'm not saying it's someone at the circus, but better safe than sorry. The rest of us can keep an eye on out those in the crowd. However, Bats should wait until people are gone in order to avoid causing panic."

I gave Marinette a nod in response to make it seem like I'd relay the message. It's not like Bruce knew for a fact that she knew he was Batman.

"Good. I won't get the chance to grab my bag again, so would you be able to take it?"

"Got it Pix. Be careful."

"Always. I'll see you boys later and will be in touch just in case," Marinette said before walking off.

"You heard the woman. Batman should investigate to see if there's foul play. Dick can keep an eye out on the circus crew and the rest of us have the crowd," I said standing up.

"We're taking orders from a normal civilian? You can't be serious."

"Of course I am B. By now you should know, Marinette is not a normal citizen. She learned a complex trapeze routine in the span of a few hours, managed to jump through a hoop of fire like it's nothing, do a quadruple flip in order to save her life, also managed to save Dick's life as well, and calm down an entire crowd. That's just today. Earlier this trip, Marinette was injected with fear toxin and overcome it in a couple minutes to help defeat Scarecrow. She did have to get the antidote but that was days later. Hell, she managed to figure out my identity and that Jason Todd who is still publicly deceased was alive."

"Don't forget the fact Marinette tried outrunning Batman on your bike," Damian added.

"And sneak away from him while he talked to Gordon just because they were taking too long," Dick laughed.

"Right now, she is checking up on her friends to make sure they are ok after what they just witnessed. There's nothing Pixie can't do."

"Expect stopping herself from burning out."

"You should've seen her Monday Dickie. She was working on a big project, helping her friend with her nails, and playing doctor on another after he bruised himself from tripping."

"I get it. Marinette is a very talented woman, but she should not get involved in an investigation."

"She is already involved. If it is foul play, they tried killing her. I'd say Blueberry is involved."

"Jaylad, you need to prevent her from being any more involved then."

"You're asking the impossible, so no promises. I'm going to head back myself to check on her. Keep your eyes out."

Marinette's POV

"Hey," I muttered taking my seat next to Adrien.

"Stupid question but how are you?" he asked.

"Ready for bed. I've been practicing for hours and the nap I took earlier wasn't enough."

"I think he means how are you after almost dying," Chloe said.

"Not the first time. Won't be the last."

"But you had protection then."

"They were getting ready to put up the net after the first bar broke. I would have been fine."

"They didn't get it up in time. You must have heard the second bar hitting the ground."

"If Tommy was working on putting it up, then I would have been fine. He'd catch me."

"You're acting like he's done so before," Nino pointed out.

"No, but when the net first got taken off during practice, he was down there ready to catch either of us if something was to happen. Now shh. I want to watch the rest of the show."

"You should've gone back to rest," Adrien said.

"I needed to do some things first. Look through the crowd to make sure no one is acting suspicious," I whispered in his ear.

"You think there was foul play."

"Maybe."

"Hey," Jason whispered sitting in his original seat.

"Hey," I replied leaning into him.

"The others are doing what you instructed. B seemed to put up a fight for a moment, but we all reminded him how amazing you are."

"Did he tell you to try and keep me uninvolved?"

"You are too good at this."

"Not my fault he's predictable in certain situations."

"I'm not here to convince you not to. Instead, I just ask that you be careful if you choose to look into it. I know you can take care of yourself. Tonight proved it even more, but I don't want to see you get hurt."

"I won't do anything stupid. Right now, I just want to lay down."

"The show is close to being over. You can fall asleep in my arms. I'll even carry you to the bus."

"nooo. I have to talk to Haly."

"You can talk to him tomorrow. Dick will take care of it for today."

"But," I started but yawned. "But he's looking at me."

"But you can hardly keep your eyes open."

"I don't want to miss anything, so I need you to keep me up. What if I miss the bad guy?"

"I'll keep my eyes out, and Haly might preform tomorrow. I'll get you tickets."

"Fine, but wake me up if anything happens."

"Of course."

——

I woke up to the sound of chatter from the crowd. However, it was certain comments that made any sleepiness go away.

"Do you think the Dangers planned for the rope to break?"

"The way Dawn handled it sure made it seem so."

"But did you see the look on Dan's face? He was terrified."

"They're actors."

"No, trapeze artists."

"Same thing. They live to perform making them actors."

"You think they staged the whole thing."

The first two voices went back and forth but were interrupted but a third.

"No way you think that! Why would you think they would try to stage something that could go so wrong and lead to their death?"

"They're professionals," the second said.

"So were The Flying Graysons and everyone knows their story."

"You mean The Falling Graysons."

I jumped out of Jason's arms and landed in front of the three gossipers.

"Do you think it is funny to make fun of the deaths of innocent people which ended up making a boy an orphan?" I asked.

"Calm down little girl. It was a joke. There's no need to get so worked up," the second voice I heard said.

"So you do think it's funny?"

"The kid got adopted by billionaire Bruce Wayne. He's fine."

"Fine? A little boy watched his family fall to their death scaring him for life."

"You're acting like you know him."

"I don't, but I know what it's like to lose parents. My situation may be different, but it isn't easy. Honestly, you should be ashamed of yourself."

"Jesus."

"The kid is right. Your joke wasn't funny," the third person said.

"Another thing, gossiping about what happened to The Daring Dangers is messed up as well. It's people's lives you're talking about. Now good day," I finished jumping back into Jason's arms.

"You sure gave them a piece of your mind," Jason said glaring at the three I had just gotten done talking to.

"Someone needed to say something. They don't know what damage they can do talking about others like that."

"Let's get you to bed before you get more worked up causing you to be up all night."

"Too late. I have enough energy to conquer the world."

"You'd be a terrifying villain."

"Good thing I want to help others instead."

"Would I at least have a place at your side?"

"Of course. You would rule at my side. I'd need someone to make sure I didn't take things too far."

"What about Adrien?"

"You'd probably need his help. I'm known for being stubborn. Even Mr. Wayne learned that today."

"Speaking of. He is standing in front of the bus."

"With a fake smile too," I pointed out looking over.

"What do you think it's about?" Jason asked.

"Probably apologizing for what the class witnessed and trying to do something to make up for it. While his smile is fake, Mr. Wayne is actually genuine on what he's about to tell us."

"So he's trying to sweep things under the rug?"

"You can't exactly sweep what happened tonight under the rug. It's too big. I'm guessing someone told their parents, so the word is already out. I don't think that's the reason behind it though. I do know that I can't talk about it for another hour."

"You don't have to be strong around me. Bruce would probably let you spend some time alone at the manor. I'd even head over just in case you need me."

"But it wouldn't look good if I went with him. Too much gossip and," I started.

"And right now, none of that matters. You need to take care of yourself."

"What I want now is to be on the roof of the hotel looking over the city. I want to look at the peaceful scene and come up with stories for those who I see. I want to imagine living those lives. It might seem like I'm torturing myself doing that, but it's kinda relaxing."

"Do you want company? I can go as either one."

"I need a moment alone to process things. Be there for Dick please. I saw the terror on his face up close and watched as he left reality. I felt him slipping away. He grew heavy and was slipping from my grasp. Be there for him."

"Of course," Jason replied putting me down once we reached the bus. "And if you need someone yourself, tell me the moment you feel that way."

"Will do. Go to him," I said giving Jason a quick kiss before shooing him away.

"Now that everyone is here, I would like to apologize to every single one of you. We still don't know the whole story, but I can imagine how some of you felt. Rest assured both acrobats are doing as well as they can be at the moment. I know it can't make up for it, but I got seats to Zatanna's magic show tomorrow evening. You do not have to attend as it is optional. I hope this can put some of your minds at ease and can use it as a way to relax," Mr. Wayne said.

Chatter broke out as the entire class seemed excited to see The Amazing Zatanna in person. While my friends seemed a little more tense than the others, I could still sense the excitement radiating from them.

"Thank you Mr. Wayne," I said with a series of thanks from the class following.

"It is my pleasure. You should all head back to the hotel as it has been a long night."

Everyone started filing into the bus, but I hung in the back seeing that Mr. Wayne wanted to talk to me.

"How can I help you?" I asked once I reached him.

"I wanted to check on you and see if there is anything you needed. I can't imagine how you are feeling."

"As well as I can. Right now, I just need a moment alone and for you to take care of Dick. You didn't see what I did, but I know he needs people there for him. I'll check in later."

"Don't hesitate to reach out."

"Will do. Thanks again for the tickets."

"Of course, but I do hope you understand that during our meeting on Sunday I would like to talk about this entire situation."

"I get it. I'll see you then."

"Take care Marinette."

As a response, I nodded my head and headed onto the bus which ended up being the longest one ever. With everything that had happened, I decided to sit in the back by myself. I didn't talk even when my friends tried their best to get me to do so. It didn't take them long to realize I wanted to be alone.

——

Once off the bus, I jogged to my room and made my way to the stairs that lead to the roof. Down below, I watch the bus pull away and others come in and out of the lobby each with a story of their own. Along with looking below, I watched the rooftops searching for any Bats.

After about thirty minutes of alone time, my phone began to buzz. I didn't bother pulling it out of my pocket in case it was once more the unknown caller. They had been calling at least five times a day which had began to put me on edge. I was constantly looking over my shoulder and becoming more suspicious of each stranger.

It was due to them that I had suspected foul play on the incident earlier. I didn't bring it up not wanting to concern the others. I had no leads or information on who it may be. While I wanted to be alone, I hoped a certain Bat would stop by. Personally, I thought naming yourself after a food chain was ridiculous, but it was better than using his last name.

It wasn't until the sun had set later I saw the vigilante I was looking for. We made eye contact and I waved him over. Red Robin seemed confused but came over anyway.

"What do you need?" Red Robin questioned immediately getting to business. I pointed at his coms signaling I wouldn't speak unless they were off. "Fine. I turned them off. No one can hear us, but if I get in trouble for going radio silent, I am blaming you."

"I really don't care. I just need your help," I replied.

"Why not ask Hood?"

"Don't get me wrong. Hood is great with technology, but I need the Bat who can hack into anything in seconds."

"What do you need me to hack?"

"I keep getting calls from an unknown number. I originally brushed it off as spam, but the calls became more frequent. I don't know if someone got my number and decided to fuck with me or it's something else."

"Something else? You think someone is after you?"

"I don't know. First I'm getting all these calls from an unknown number and today I almost fell to my death. I want to know if I'm just being paranoid or something is happening."

"I can take it to the Batcave or Oracle's base of operation. Using that technology could make things go by faster."

"I get that, but I want to keep what's happening on the down low. I don't want to worry the others if it's just me being paranoid."

"I could use the holocomputer I carry on me then, but it will take longer."

"Thanks Tim," I said handed him my phone.

"I knew it."

"You wouldn't be a great detective if you didn't."

"I didn't have definite proof until now. After it was revealed you knew Hood's identity, it was likely you knew the rest. Who all knows for a fact?"

"Everyone besides Batman and Signal. They're in the same boat you were in."

"When are you going to tell Batman?"

"Sunday. No more questions until then."

"You're asking a Bat not to ask questions or look into things."

"I know. The only questions you should be asking is what is happening on my phone."

"It looks like the calls have been coming from a series of burner phones which is smart on their part."

"Anything you can do?"

"Just wait a moment and I can a location. It takes a little longer to track burner phones. Do you know if there would be someone in particular interested in you?"

"No but a lot of you guys have stopped by here. Someone might have seen it. Who's out of Arkham right now?"

"Freeze, Black Mask, and Riddler."

"Look into Mask. He's Hood's biggest enemy."

"You should know that Hood wouldn't let us go near his case. I can look into Riddle, but you need to come clean and talk to Hood."

"I will. I didn't want to worry him over nothing. Plus his emotions might cloud his judgement. There's more of a chance he'd rush into danger if he thought it meant protecting me. I want more information first."

"But keep in mind how hurt he'd be if he learns you're keeping things from him."

"I know. Give me the locations and I'll tell him to look into them."

"Are you going to mention the calls?"

"I'm pretty good with technology myself. Teach me what you did. I'll show him and it will be mine and Hood's case."

"But you will keep me updated."

"I will. While we wait for the locations to pop up, teach me."

"I'm not sure if you could. B has his own satellites that we use. You won't have access to them."

"But Hood does."

"I think so. I'll teach you, but please be careful. This family has already lost one person before. We can't lose another."

"I will. I know my limitations."

"Good. Now, let's get started."

——

"They're spread all across Gotham. There's even one in Metropolis," Tim said showing me the map.

"They've been following me. I got one when we were in the Superman museum so that explains the Metropolis one. Several are around the hotel meaning they've seen you guys come and go."

"They think you have some connection to us."

"Using me to get to you."

"Exactly. Freeze is unlikely to do this leaving Mask and Riddler."

"Hood stops by the most, so I'm guessing Black Mask. Was there anyone suspicious in the crowd? I ended up falling asleep, so I got nothing."

"I didn't see anything. Wing didn't find anything on anyone in the circus. Him and B are going over the scene taking a close look at the trapeze."

"Make sure they get the ropes. Look at how they were cut. If I can, I'd like to look at the files and any evidence you guys have on Sunday."

"As long as I get a copy of the map we made. I'll keep it secret, but it could close the case faster."

"Keep me updated."

"Contact Hood via civilian identity. Tell him what's going on. I'll find a way to get the rest from dropping by."

"Batman will probably be the hardest due to how stubborn he is. If he has any concerns, tell him to contact me without the mask."

"And I won't tell him you know. That's your job."

"I'll see you on Sunday. I plan on being in the cave."

"He'll have a heart attack if the first thing he sees once he's done with patrol is you."

"A couple more gray hairs won't kill him," I said causing Tim to laugh.

"Before I go, was it really necessary to bash my suit the other night?"

"It was the first Red Robin one I made fun of. This one looks much better. You should take it as a compliment."

"How?"

"I complimented your growth as a designer. It's not something MDC does to a lot of people."

"Fine. I'll use that viewpoint and say thank you."

"And I should also thank you for your help tonight. Your computer skills really helped. Thank you."

"Any time. Remember to be careful," Tim said before taking off.

I sighed as the easy part was over. Now, I had to tell Jason about the phone calls and apparent stalking.
