chapter ten
We froze like a scene in a movie. It felt as though we were apart of some kind of The Breakfast Club remake. Instead of five people in detention, there's four of us fleeing for our lives from a crazy girl. Hm, I think, this would be an amazing movie.
"Stop caring about the crazy bitch and instead care about staying alive!" Alex yells, grabbing onto Laurance's arm, pushing him forward.
The running begins again, but now we're being chased. If we don't escape them, we're screwed. If we do escape them, we still have a possibility of being in deep trouble as well. Why is it that I had to be kidnapped? Why did I have to agree with Leo? Why couldn't I have never met these people. That way, I wouldn't be in the predicament that I am now!
"How do we get out of here?" Laurance, who is in front of us all, asks. He looks back at Vylad who appears to be falling behind us, lost in thought. Alex stops and grabs onto his arm, pulling him forward and knocking him out of his trancelike state of mind.
"Sorry," he apologizes. "I was mapping out he building in my head. We came from the left but when we came everything looked untouched. That means there's an exit in either the left or right side of the building. The downside of that is that either side could be heavily guarded and air vents aren't going to help us anytime soon."
"Then what do we do," the question slips from my mouth harsher than I intended, and the look of shock spread across Vylad's face shows it. He wipes it away with a shake of his head and stops running. The other two stop as well and try to catch their breath. "You guys have those tools. Can't you just drill a hole in the wall or something?"
Before I can hear the smart comment from somebody concerning Laurance and holes, Vylad shakes his head.
"It doesn't work like that. This was an unplanned and rushed rescue mission. We need to call backup. Laurance, you're in charge of that. Alex, if we get caught, you need to do something to pass time as a distraction."
"And what about me?" I question, watching Laurance take out his phone. Vylad licks his lips and looks around. He sees we'll built and stocky males turn around the far corner towards us and yells to run. "I'm useful!"
"You're the one who got kidnapped. For now it's best if you don't do anything to get us captured!"
His words feel like knives piercing through my heart, but the realization that strikes me is even worse. Maybe if I wasn't as petty, or jealous, or even as immature as I had been, maybe we wouldn't be in this situation.
If I had been different, Alex's eyes wouldn't be full of fear instead of light. Her face wouldn't be black and blue, and her plump lips wouldn't be cut and bloodied. Vylad wouldn't have sassed at me the way he did, and there could've been a chance (even if it would be extremely slim) that he would like me back, and we'd be together like him and Alex. And Laurance, maybe I wouldn't have avoided him when things went wrong. Maybe we would be even closer, or we would've just been simple friends.
But I know one thing for sure. If I wouldn't have been the way I was, I wouldn't have this reality heck that slapped me in the face. If it wasn't for what just happened, I wouldn't have realized that Vylad wasn't right for me, but somebody else was. But now, I don't know if he'll take me back with everything I've put everyone through.
"Backup is requested," Laurance comments, running a hand through his hand. "Do you think you can hack into the cameras here?"
Vylad shakes his head. "I didn't bring my phone, and there's no computers here. Besides, there's no time to look for one, it'd be useless."
Alex throws her phone towards him, glancing behind her to see people gaining on us. "You know the password! Laurance, you cover Vylad's back, and I'll cover his front. Y/N," she looks at me, blank. "Make yourself useful and don't get us caught!"
She runs forward, and Laurance yells after her. I look around me only to freeze. Words process to tell me to move, but I can't Laurance is getting ganged up on, and I can't do anything but watch.
Quit being useless, I hear a voice inside my mind tell me. What's wrong with you? This is all your fault, you know. Maybe you should actually do something instead of letting everybody fight your own battles.
I'm not useless.
Do something!
I shake my head to snap myself out of my thoughts and run towards Laurance. He looks at me for a second and receives a blow to the cheek. I feel somebody try pin my hand behind my back, and I turn around and swipe my foot from under him, making him fall down.
Somebody grabs onto my wrist, and I try to pry myself free. Laurance kicks him down with a blow to the back, and my wrist is set free.
"You little fucker!" I yell down at the dude, kicking him in the side with rage. "Have you ever heard of keeping your hands to yourself? I'm a lady!"
Laurance stares at me in awe, mumbling something under his breath.
"Follow me!" Vylad yells, beginning to run forward with the phone in hand. "I found a place to hide while somebody comes and gets us."
"Whatever happened to backup?" Laurance hisses, grabbing my hand and turning a sharp corner into a tight, dark, hiding spot.
"It takes time!"
I look around.
Blondie's gone.

"Why is it that you four always get captured?" Charlie hisses, banging his hand against the leather car seats. He stares Laurance straight in the eyes. "Some kind of leader you are. And to think that I let it be your older team as a rescuer mission," he looks around and groans. "Where's the short little blonde one?"
The boys panic next to me. I messed up again. I thought I would do the right thing, but I learned that she was gone and kept it to myself. I didn't say anything because the little piece of me told me things would become better if she was gone.
"You know what?" Charlie groans, rubbing his temple. "I'll send people to get her, but it won't be any of you failures. Expect more training in the future!"

Days pass, and neither has Laurance nor Vylad showed up for school, except for today. And even today, Vylad won't look my way.
I spot him in the hallways and rush over to him, tugging on his sleeve. He looks at me, sleep deprivation evident on his face. His eyes look at me, but I don't know who I'm looking at anymore.
It feels like when I'm looking into a mirror: I don't know who I am anymore.
"Oh, hello, Y/N," he tells me, nodding slightly.
"Vylad, hey!" I smile, hoping for a smile back. To my dismay, I get nothing. Vylad's smile always makes me happy, and his bubbly personality makes the day better. It's gone, and I can't stand it. "How are you?"
He replies with the single word tired. If Vylad feels this way, I start asking myself, how does Laurance feel?
Talking to Vylad isn't the same anymore. He's separated himself from me, and he now makes up an excuse to leave. I watch his retreating figure as I walk to Laurance.
He's calm, but he isn't himself. He doesn't appear to be as tired as Vylad, but the coffee in his hand appears to be the only reason he's awake.
"Laurance, I need to tell you something-"
He stops me and shakes his head.
"I know what you did," he glares. "And I can't believe you did it." He walks away from me, and guilt fills my stomach.
What exactly does he know?

Ryder's POV
In the middle of second hour, I received a urgent text message from Charlie. I left school at that time, and I didn't even tell Y/N about it.
They found her, and they want me to retrieve her. I shouldn't, but I can't help but do it anyway.
I stand in the middle of an empty, shady, alleyway. I look around, and listen to the sound of silence. I came with no weapons and no backup. This was the only arrangement they would take.
Somebody walks out of the dark, but I don't see her.
"Where is she?"
He ignores me and looks around, commenting that there's no other people with me, he snaps his fingers. Somebody comes out from where he once was, and he carries a squirming Alex with another man. They stop besides the unknown man, and he rips off the duck tape covering my mouth.
"Holy shit, that hurts!" Alex hisses, then bites her lip. "Ooofff, you bitches-ugh!"
She's forced onto her knees, and she looks up at me with hopeless eyes. Why is she such a mess? Did they do this to her? I end up deciding with the idea that they did this to her.
"Take her," the leader says. "She pisses us off and won't talk. But I want you to do this in return, I want you to tell Charlie this was only a warning."
I nod my head and rush her away.
"What happened to you?" I ask her.
"Your sister."

Y/N's POV
Laurance won't answer my calls. He won't answer my texts. He blocked my number soon afterwards. He unfollowed, and blocked, me in all social media, and he won't talk to me whatsoever. He won't even glance my way.
What could he possibly know?
I sigh, placing my jacket on over my shoulders and popping each arm into a sleeve. I've decided that if he won't come to me I'll come to him.
He can't ignore me forever.
Especially if I show up at his front door.
I trudge my feet through the cold snow. The sky is as gloomy as my mood, and the stillness concerns me. Something is going to go wrong quickly, and I hope I'm not going to be the reason for it.
Once I arrive at the Zvahl house, I take a deep breath and let it out and then knock on the door.
The door opens, but he tries to close it. I end up shoving my foot between the door and the door frame. It hurts like bloody hell. Like, really bad. Ouch.
"What are you doing here?"
If looks could kill, I'd be six feet under a long time ago.
"I just need a few minutes, please."
