chapter six
Y/N's POV
"Why were you with a Zvahl? And why did you come home so late?"
I roll my eyes at Ryder's overprotective comment. I don't have a curfew, and it's not like Laurance is going to hurt me. It's been proven to me that both Laurance and Ryder are making sure that nothing hurts me. I seriously doubt that Laurance would hurt me himself.
"You're constantly with Zvahls dumbass," I reply, and I walk down the darkened hallway to my room. I open the door and sigh at the sight of what my room really is. It's small, and I have little to no light source in my room. I have a single light on my ceiling and that's it. Most of my other light sources died a while ago, and nobody has fixed or replaced them. Who would? "Aren't you like, chasing after one?"
"She's flirting with me," he says following me into my room. The light comes on, and I plop down onto my bed. "I'm simply just doing it back because I. . . well I don't need to explain myself to you. You know what? Just go to bed already!"
"Alright mister grumpy pants. But it's eight o'clock and we all know that I won't."
He throws a pillow at my head and tells me to go to bed once again. The light goes off in my room, and I lay my head against the pillow. He shuts the door, and the little light I had left is gone. That's until my phone lights up next to me.
'Ryder seemed pissed. Everything alright?' I look at the contact to see that Laurance texted me. I chuckle at his text message, and I look towards the door to see if Ryder will slam it open.
'Yeah, I actually killed him.' I send back.
'Good to know that everything is alright! See you tomorrow beautiful~ ;)' I roll my eyes. You kinky lil' shit, I think in my head. I'll kill you one day.
Yet again another night of Ryder and myself staying alone in this broken home. Someday I'm going to leave this place and never look back. And when I do, I won't regret it. And with those thoughts, I fell asleep.
I'm awaken hours later to sunshine peaking through my blinds, and Ryder is nowhere to be seen. This is weird because ge normally is the reason I wake up in the morning. I either forget to set the alarm on my phone, or I sleep through it. Either way, Ryder is the reason I'm awake in the morning. What happened now?
I slip my lower body to the side of my bed, and the feeling of the cold floor instantly hits the bottom of my bare feet. I wrinkle my nose and throw the remaining blankets off of me.
I yawn as I stumble my way through my poorly lit room to my light switch. It flick it on and begin to get already.
I notice that I've run out of clean uniforms, and I see the uniform I wore last school day on the floor near my bed. I pick it up and examine it. It's not too wrinkly, nor does it smell bad. If anything, I'd just put a little body spray or something on.
I finish getting ready and on my way out of my room I catch my reflection in my mirror. Normally my reflection doesn't affect me before I go to school, but today is different.
Who I see in the mirror looks strangely happy for some reason. Is this because of Laurance? I question myself.
I tilt my head to the side, and the reflection in the mirror does the same. The person in the mirror and the person standing in front of the mirror can't be the same people. I reach out to the reflection, and they do the same back. I end up accepting the fact that the person in the mirror is me, and I'm genuinely happy for once.
I walk into the kichten to smell something being cooked. I guess Ryder actually got up early enough to cook us breakfast. Maybe that's why he didn't wake me up this morning.
"Morning sweety," says a voice I know all too well. Except, you would be surpirsed that know the sound of the voice since she's barely ever home.
"Morning mother," I reply back. i hear the sound of something crashing into another object, and I look over to the hallway to see Ryder.
"Shit, I spelt it! We're going to be late."
I look at the clock and notice we have two minutes until we have to leave for school. I look over at Ryder and notice just how unready he truly is. He looks like he was in a steamy session of Seven Minutes in Heaven that went too far in a short amount of time.
Mother comes out of the kitchen and stares at Ryder. He stares back at her in wide eyes. And honestly, I'm as shocked that she's home as he is.
She fixes his tie, and I grab his car keys and two granola bars. Whether they're either both for me, or I'll share with Ryder, I don't know yet.
With his keys and granola bars in one of my hands, I slip my backpack onto my back and pick up his backpack with my only free hand. He gets away from mother and I throw him his keys and backpack making my way to his car.
I get in the pessenger seat and stick my ear buds into my ears, and music soon plays through them. I lay my head back and close my eyes. I hear Ryder open and shut his door, and the car begins to move forward.
"What was she doing home? That's the first time in weeks!"
"Pay the rent or something. I honestly have no idea.
Once we arrive inside the building, I roam through the hallways to my locker. It's not an extremely strange thing to see peoplw making out in the hallways. So when I see a couple do it a hallway down from my locker, it doesn't affect me.
I remember when I first met Laurance. He was such a mess and was late to homeroom. I head that he was sent to the principal's office the next day, and he also rejected Michi when she asked him to be in a romantic relationship.
That same day they must've went on a mission because now I realize that the guy was Laurance. I can't believe it took me this long to realize it.
But suddenly, I get a text message. It's an unknown number, and I question myself if I dare look at it. I can probably look at it. I don't need to answer it if I don't want it. Looking at it won't hurt anyone, I think.
I wrinkle my nose up and unlock my phone going onto my text messaging app.
'You know me, but you're going to realize it. I've helped you out before believe it or not, and now it's time for you to help me.'
"What the fuck. . . ?" I mumble out loud.
My thumbs begin to move on their own. Could this be my father?
'How can I help you? But first. . . who are you?'
The person texts me back almost instantly after I send my message back.
'Oh sweetheart, I'm somebody who's important to your family.'

I knock on the door, and Katelyn answers it. She looks at me confused but lets me in.
"Um, follow me I guess?" Katelyn says and goes up the stairs. I follow her into a room, and she sits on the bed nearby. I turn my head to the right to see somebody standing in front of a mirror.
"Did you bring my lipstick tube?"
"No. . ." I say. I have mixed emotions about this whole thing. "But I'm supposed to be here. You can even ask Vylad or something. He may know."
"Why are you here anyway? We have a mission soon. I can't babysit you," Katelyn says.
Sometimes I don't understand Katelyn. She can be nice, and she normally is really nice. But right now she's acting like she lives here. . . which she doesn't by the way.
Alex cocks an eyebrow at her. I watch as she places the closed tube of red lipstick in an open drawer, and I hump slightly when I hear it slam shut.
"I don't need babysitting," I begin. "I'm supposed to go on the mission with you. I have texts from that Charlie dude saying so. He thought it'd be a nice surprise so surprise I guess?"
Katelyn takes my phone out of my hand and forces me to show the messages. He told mw to delete the messages, but I'm a lazy person and didn't do it. She looks up at us girls and nods her head. Alex grabs my hand and brings me over to her mirror.
"Don't move. I need to find Cadenza. You can't look like you. I have no idea what you'll be doing, but you need to look different if you're going to be doing to action."
I watch as she walks off into the hallway, and Katelyn glares at me. I stare at her like her glare doesn't affect me, but in the inside I'm pissing myself.
Cadenza, a girl with amazing looking hair, walks into the room with a large makeup bag. What could possibly be in there for a person to need a bag that large?
She begins to put makeup on my face, and I couldn't name what the items. Katelyn gives me a look that tells me to keep my lips shut and not to make a sound.
She finishes after about five minutes, and she stares at me smiling. I assume she likes what is applied to my face and begins to walk away, but she stops and stares back at us.
"Are you girls doing a make over or something?" ask Cadenza.
"You know us so well Cadi," Alex says.
Katelyn looks at the clock, and her eyes widen. She grabs me by the arm, and I'm pulled all the way downstairs to a car that's parked outside.
I'm pushed in and looking around I can see my brother and Vylad and Laurance. They stare at me, and the two girls jump into the car behind me.
The car ride is silent, but the burning glares that are given to our side of the car are undeniable to any person in sight.
I'm left somewhere with Vylad, and the other four run off. Vylad begins to do something to a keyboard, and the screens turn on. I watch through screens as the four sneak through hallways of some building, and Vylad seems to be keeping a close eye on the screens.
He talks now and then, but it's to them. It's things like giving directions, or even warnings, but then there's the small conversations that I can hear.
"Great, now get out of there before they realize that the papers are gone. Laurance and Ryder, I expect you both to work together. If you don't, all four of you will be screwed."
I look at the scrren that sgows Laurance, and he looks in the general direction of the camera. I don't know if he knows that Vylad's watching him, but he nore than likely knows.
"Katelyn, move a little faster. Other than that, you all are almost out safely. But be carefull, there's still things that can trigger alarms."
I stare at Vylad again, and he turns to me and smiles. I think about Laurance's words from our conversation from earlier, and realize the best way to put the plan into action is after the mission when it's just us two alone.
The mission ends, and we soon are in a car being driven to Charlie. I stare down at my feet as Laurance places his hand on my knee. He doesn't realize that he's doing it, and I do nothing to stop him.
By the times we've made it to Charlie, Katelyn, Ryder, and Laurance are demanding answers on why I am here. Vylad gives him a mission report, and Charlie somehow manages to understand it through all the yelling going on.
Charlie hushes them. And right when I was about to leave with the others, he makes me stay.
"So, do you want to join? How did you enjoy the mission?"
I stare at Charlie. I'm trying to figure out what I want, and once it's clear I still can't get it out of my mouth.
"Um. . ." I clear my throat. "I think I'll pass. Sorry Charlie, but this just isn't me. Good luck on with your future missions though!"
I quickly make my way out of the building to see him standing not too far away from me. He's standing under light, and I smile as I walk up to him.
"I'm sorry for all the yelling," he apologizes. "We all just wanted to know why you were there. This is a dangerous job, and we don't want you to get hurt, but you already know that. I've told you this before."
"It's fine, and it's only a one time thing anyway. But I have to tell you something, it's important," I say.
"What's up?"
"Hey V!" Alex runs over, and he kisses her cheek. My heart breaks at the sight. Maybe I'm too late, I think as all my confidence and hope dies into anger and regret. "Oh my Irene, am I interrupting something? I'm so sorry!" I shake my head and tell her to continue. "Charlie told me to tell you earlier that he needs to talk to you alone for something impoetant soon. With said, I'll you see you later. Bye Y/N!"
He smiles at her before she walks away, and she waves happily to us both. I wave back slightly with a forced smile.
"What did you want to tell me?" Vylad asks.
I shake my head.
"I seemed to forgot," I wave at him with the same forced smile I gave Alex when she left. "I'll see you later though. Bye. . ."
I run off towards Ryder, and I can hear a faint goodbye from Vylad. He runs towards the other two, and they begin to walk the opposite direction from us.
I look behind me to see Katelyn walking backwards in front of them scolding the two little thirteen year olds holding hands whle Laurance is laughing obnoxiously.
"Hey Ryder?" I say less of a question to get his attention. He looks down at me and smiles faintly as he nods at me. "I don't know what I would do without you."
If only I would listen to you more. . .
