Chapter 2
Dane was accustomed to nights without sleep. He often undertook missions in little villages, which tended to have a much higher proportion of nightwatch on duty, and he couldn't afford a moment to lapse.
However, though he could undertake such missions, he still highly valued his slumber, and hated to see it interrupted. So, when he was awakened by Callen's rough shaking, his first response was an annoyed growl.
"C'mon, its still three, we don't start for another hour..."
Callen wasn't too taken aback by Dane's uncanny awareness of the time; there were other things to worry about.
"They've found us."
Dane sat bolt upright, choking on his heart. Such a statement only meant one thing. But he could not hold onto his astonishment for long, and quickly leapt from the bed, helping with the evacuation. Dadangan was quickly packing up the barest essentials, and Jessie was tearing up the most incriminating documents, with Tsubacki eating the tatters. Dane rapidly ushered Dadangan onto the Platform in preparation for transport.
The Platform was a small demoleculizer - a transporter salvaged out of an old Class 43 sea freighter, which had been scrapped at the St Percival docks where Callen had worked prior. Really it was only rated for the transmission of goods, not living creatures, but anti-government agents could not afford the luxury of safety. The device had a radio antenna, carefully dialed to a particular frequency, such that it would transmit instructions over the airwaves to reconstruct its passengers at a safehouse thousands of miles away. Everyone had hoped against hope not to ever have to use it...
But the time had come. There was room enough on it for only a few at a time, and so, they could not all go at once. With their things gathered and evidence destroyed, Dadangan and Jessie huddled together on the Platform, and Cody started it up. The two aboard writhed in pain as their bodies were disassembled by the clunky old machine, and Dane shuddered a bit as he watched them, knowing he would be next.
Once the pair had fully disappeared, Dane quickly stepped up, and Cody wasted no time. Dane could feel it as the Platform teased apart the very molecules of his body, and would have gritted his teeth if his jaws weren't disintegrating. The process eventually got to his brain, and suddenly everything faded out.
--
Once Dane was gone, Tsubacki stepped up on the Platform. Since he was so much larger, he would not be able to fit on the device alongside Dane. Cody immediately began the sequence, his paw sweating a bit, his body feeling warm. After Tsubacki was out, he would have to immediately disable the machine, as he and Callen would not be getting out that way - his electronics were sensitive enough that using the machine for him was almost certain death, and Callen had no intention of leaving him behind. The idea was that the deer beast and the twiren would make themselves out to be doomsday-preppers, not entirely uncommon in a nation that had been at war for so many years.
Tsubacki shut his eyes tightly, having dreaded this ever since the plan had first arisen. The idea of being dissolved into nothing and reassembled elsewhere was already disconcerting, and the fact that it was going to be painful made him even less receptive to the thought. He was a big and tough-looking creature indeed, but primarily there for moral support.
The transport process was about halfway through, when there suddenly came a bang from up above, agents breaking into the safe-chamber door. Cody started, and suddenly went limp, finally overheating and losing control of his body, as well as the transporter.
The device, not being rated for live tissue, required careful regulation manually to avoid letting it get out of an acceptable tolerance. Therefore, it had been modified such that it could interface with Cody's hardware and be controlled directly. With Cody's processor out, the Platform encountered an exception, and was immediately bricked, with Tsubacki disappearing, and a pile of thick gray sludge splattering onto the platform.
Callen looked back quickly after hearing the sound, and the two stared at the machine dumbfounded and horrified, realizing what had just happened.
It was in this state that the inspector found them when she arrived.
