❝YOUR POV❞
▬▬ 𝓣.oday was a day like any other day. It was a day filled with mundaneness and exhaustion. You couldn't help but yearn for something interesting to happen but, the closest thing you'll ever get to interesting is the farfetched illusions you've created in your head.
Although you hated how uninteresting and exhausting it was every single day, you couldn't help but assume that maybe a boring person like you deserves to live such a dull life? However, that's merely an assumption, not a fact. Hell, you probably deserve more than you think!
Even though you have acknowledged that you deserve an equal opportunity as others, you doubt that the world would play fair because you knew people would do anything to attain what they desire. You know what, scratch that, it's not the world's fault that people don't play fair, it's the people who thirst for more who are at fault for how unequal our world is.
At the moment, you were staring at the ceiling, but as seconds passed, the sound of your thoughts weakened as the telephone from across the hallway rang. Your body was exhausted from work, but you tried your best to get off the bed.
You grabbed the telephone, then placed the receiver near your mouth, wanting to make sure that the other person could hear your voice clearly because you couldn't muster up enough energy to make your voice a little louder.
"Good evening-" You greeted, but you were interrupted by a text-to-speech speaking from the other side of the call. "Hi! how are you?"
"I'm fine." It shocked you to say the least, but thought nothing of it seeing as you were too exhausted to even use your brain. Nonetheless, the feeling of uneasiness didn't leave your side.
You expected them to respond, but the call was abruptly cut off, so you dropped the call then headed back to bed. Despite the mattress you laid upon was soft along with the pillows and blankets, the warmth they produced was comforting itself but, the warmth of the inanimate objects wasn't enough to warm up the sheer cold that went down your spine.
You tried your best to sleep, but the call shook you up quite a bit. The thought of the event made the task of sleeping almost impossible, because your mind was elsewhere.
Despite the night sky looming over the city, the occasional uninvited sounds echoing throughout the silent streets, along with the spontaneous beam of light passing by, indicating that a car has passed by your street, and the cicadas crying out loud for one another: Usually those factors made your exhausting state feel relaxing but, today it felt so unnerving.
Moments ago, you were exhausted from work. Now you were getting worked up over a random phone call?
At the moment, your eyes were wide awake, expecting for something to show up. Your feet tucked into the blanket, scared of the monsters reaching out for your feet and dragging you into the darkness, and you were hugging a pillow hoping its presence would reassure you that everything was fine but, you knew that despite those actions the feeling of fear still lingered within you.
Who called you?
Why wouldn't they just use their real voice?
And why did they cut off the call so quickly?
Those questions kept buzzing like a stupid bee that wouldn't leave you alone. You even began mentally deducing as to who did that but, alas, your attempts were futile. No speculation made sense at all and due to the stress you've accumulated, you accidentally fell into your slumber and overslept the next day, thus leading you to show up late at work.
After being overworked to the edge of your sanity with that stupid call and work; You found yourself laying on the floor. From top to bottom, your body was screaming in pain, and begging you to not worsen the strain your body went through for 8 hours straight. It even seemed like you were planning to sleep there. Your eyelids were about to flutter to their last, then a telephone ring ruined it.
Begrudgingly, you picked yourself up and headed for the annoying noise. Passing by, you glanced at a nearby clock and noticed it was 6pm. It wasn't an interesting detail, but maybe sleeping early wasn't that much of a bad idea at the moment.
Once you had approached where the annoying noise came from, you harshly grabbed the telephone, annoyed by the fact that it stopped you from sleeping.
"Are you calling up my phone?" The same robotic voice from yesterday asked, which irked your already annoyed and exhausted self.
"Listen here, whoever you are, stop calling me. If this is your idea of a stupid prank, then I will have you know no one is laughing." You paused for a moment, realizing how harsh you came off, and toned it down a bit.
"So please, for the love of God, stop calling me or else the authorities will get involved." You said sternly whilst trying your best to be civilized with the other person despite the annoyance you felt towards their existence.
"Baby, tell me what is wrong."
At this point, you were on the verge of throwing the telephone out the window. It was as if it didn't listen to you. Whoever the other person was on the other side of the phone must really know you well enough to piss you off.
"Did you not hear me? I said you are wrong. This whole thing is wrong! Why the hell are you even using a text to speech if you genuinely want to talk to me."
At the moment, you were losing your shit over a measly call which is quite sad if you think about it but, then again this person had prepared a perfect plan to annoy you, which was calling you up when you were at the edge of your sanity.
"Am I good enough for you?" That question alone made you scoff. If you were going to voice your thoughts you would have said "no" but considering how it's obviously not listening to you, you'd just dismiss that stupid question.
"Like, I said, no one is fucking laughing so drop it." You hissed, then readied yourself to drop the call, but as you were about to slam the telephone, you stopped.
"Don't you ever let me go."
A shiver of fear and surprise resonated within your body. The thought of letting go of the call made you think twice. It was almost as if that robotic caller was human themselves but, fortunately for you, you had the nerves of steel, so you quickly ended the call.
At the moment, you weren't being rational but, you immediately decided that you were going to get rid of the telephone to avoid any more inconvenience.
Once you had finished up leisurely activities and took care of yourself (to distract yourself from the unnerving event earlier), your tired body had received what it had yearned for, which is a well earned sleep.
The next day, you rushed to an acquaintance's scrap shop, hoping to get rid of the stupid telephone (and the mysterious caller) and to donate the scraps to your acquaintance's cause.
You pushed the door open. The bell jingled to alert the store owner of your presence, followed by the smell of rust and metal filling in the air, which made your nose scrunch up in disgust. The smell alone made it difficult to get used to.
"Well, I didn't expect to see you today." A red-headed female with a buzz cut said with a curt nod and a smile, to which you returned.
"So, was the new telephone garbage as well?" Belaine asked, her eyes on the telephone on your hands.
"Not really, it worked but..." Now that you were facing her, you didn't exactly know how to explain why you even planned to donate that rubbish. Maybe it was a better idea to have thought of an excuse before facing her.
"But?"
"There's this kid that's been calling me non-stop, most likely to play a stupid prank on me or something and it's been getting on my nerves." You summarized but masked the situation as though it was something else.
Belaine chuckled. "Ah, kids these days are so annoying, especially those pranks of theirs'. They never get the hint that they went too far. It drives ya' nuts ya' know?"
"Haha right, kids..." You trailed off, unsure of the fact that the events for the past days were done by children.
"Also, you know that you don't have to throw away the phone, right? You can just get its number changed or something." The girl quipped while raising a brow and an amused look in your direction.
You awkwardly laugh, now regretting that you didn't plan out what to say, so you were practically betting on your conscience to find the right words. "I don't really need the telephone at the moment. It's pretty much using up the electricity despite being rarely used. Plus, I think you'd need the parts more than I do."
"Fair enough, and you have a phone, right?" You confirmed her question with a nod while showing off your phone to her.
You weren't sure if your eyes were playing tricks on you but, you definitely saw Belaine roll her eyes once her eyes landed on your phone. "Technology these days can get you anywhere. I wouldn't be even surprised if it would get you in trouble."
"Just be careful, alright?" She waited for your confirmation.
Although you knew she was serious, you couldn't help but laugh at her worries. What the hell is your phone going to do, call you to death? Spam you with texts to death? Ping you to death? Yeah right. Plus, you barely have any friends here in Australia or online friends, so you doubt things would get out of hand for you.
"Yeah, I will." You reassured her with a smile on your face.
