Harry put on his trench coat, getting ready to face the freezing cold.
He had to go to the library to listen to a lecture. Then we he got back, he'd have to write a paper explaining what he had learned from listening to the speaker.
"Are you sure you're going to be okay?" he asked me, slipping on his boots.
"I think so. You said it was only a two hour speech?"
"Two hours, plus the drive there and the drive back."
Honestly, I was kind of glad that he was getting out and doing something. I appreciated his help beyond measure, but I felt like a burden, waking him up and not wanting to sleep or stay healthy.
"I'll be alright. I'll call you if I need anything," I told him, kissing his cheek.
He nodded and headed out the door.
I decided to watch a film while he was gone. I had about two and a half hours.
I put in one of the movies Anne had brought me.
It was a comedy about a man and his horse. I had told her about my obsession with horribly cheesy movies and she had told me that that was her favorite kind too. We shared a few of our favorites and we promised each other that if either of us ever came across one that made us cry from laughter, we had to share it.
I couldn't make it through an hour of the movie. I had a horrendous headache and the bright colors of the film made it even worse.
I wanted to call Harry and tell him to come back home, but I knew that I shouldn't. He had been doing so much for me and a headache was a stupid thing to interrupt him for.
I turned all the lights off and laid down on the couch. I shut my eyes, trying my best to go to sleep, but it didn't work.
I got up and went to the bathroom to look for a pain relieving pill, but we didn't have any.
I massaged my temples, but the pain still wasn't easing up.
"Pick up some pain reliever on your back, please? Migraine," I texted him.
He didn't text me back, which I understood because he was at a library, so I did everything I could to take my mind off of my aching head and my deceased parent.
I ate some eggs that Harry had made earlier, but they made me feel sick.
I rushed to the bathroom and leaned over the toilet bowl. I threw up and that made my headache even worse. The pain had increased so much that I was dizzy and had to hold onto the towel rack for support.
I grabbed my phone, trying my best to find Harry's number with my vision blurry.
I called him. No answer.
I tried calling Clara. No answer.
No one was answering and the corners of my vision were turning black.
I was scared. My heart was beating so fast that my chest moved with each beat. I was shaking all over and could barely stand up.
After five minutes, my phone started to ring and I knew it was Harry. I managed to press the accept button, the phone shaking in my hands.
"Is there something wrong?" Harry asked out of breath.
"I...don't...know....what's...happening."
I could hear the city noises and the wind in the background. I focused on the noises and his voice, trying my best to stay conscious and to keep breathing.
"Why are you talking like that?" he asked, panic in his voice.
"My...chest...hurts."
"Stay on the phone with me. I'm coming!"
Darkness starting covering more and more of my vision as I slid down the bathroom wall. My limbs were shaking, my chest felt like it was going to cave in, my head was killing me, and I could barely see I was so dizzy.
"Lyn, baby, talk to me."
"It...hurts...to...talk."
I gasped for air between each word. It felt like the air was getting thicker and thicker. Everything was collapsing all at once.
"Ten more minutes and I'll be home. How long has it been since you were breathing normally?" he said, still out of breath.
"Not...long. It...all...happened...at...once."
I wanted to cry out in fear, but my body couldn't. I had become so weak so quickly and I had no clue what was happening to me.
"Focus on my voice. Focus on me!" he was almost yelling.
I tried to focus on Harry's voice on the phone, but it was getting harder and harder to breathe each second. It felt like my chest and lungs were on fire.
"You don't have to talk. Just stay focused on me."
I nodded even though he wasn't there, and that made the room spin even more. I tried to grab onto the bathroom counter to make it stop, but I was too shaky and weak.
"Let me...um... Do you remember that time that we went to that boathouse? Remember? You loved it so much because we were fishing and swimming."
I heard him and his words made sense. I tried to laugh at the nice memory, but it hurt too much.
"How...long?" I asked him, gasping between the words.
"Oh god. Five minutes. I'm driving as fast as I can. Stay focused on me."
He was still talking, but his words sounded like jibberish. Then, the darkness took over my vision and I stopped feeling everything.
___________
I woke up to a beeping noise. I didn't notice the white walls of the room and the strange equipment hanging on the walls. I would've been scared if I hadn't seen Harry sprawled out on a stiff, green armchair.
"Harry?" I said.
My throat hurt when I opened my mouth.
"You're up! I was so worried about you," he said, walking to side of my hospital bed.
I remembered what happened up to the point where I assumed I had lost consciousness.
"I'm sorry."
He shook his head and grabbed my hand.
"Don't be."
"What happened?"
"The doctor said that you not eating and sleeping and being all stressed out made your nervous system get all screwed."
Harry kissed my temple.
"Thanks," I said.
"You should probably eat now. You've been out for almost seven hours. Do you want me to ask them to bring you some ice cream or something?"
Once again, I didn't feel up to eating, but the experience that I had just had convinced me to. I didn't want to feel pain like that ever again.
"Ice cream would be great. My throat hurts."
He nodded sympathetically and pressed a button on the wall above my head.
In less than a minute, a middle-aged nurse with curly black hair was in the room.
"Hey! You're awake!" she said putting gloves on.
I just nodded and smiled.
"She wanted something to eat, maybe like ice cream or something," he said for me.
"We'll have somebody bring that to you as soon as I check your blood pressure and everything!"
She was way too peppy.
"Mr. Styles, could you step out into the corridor for a minute. I'll have to ask her a few questions," she added.
He nodded and walked out of the room.
"Okay, Marilyn. I'm Theresa and I'm going to ask you a few personal questions that will help us know for sure that this was just your nervous system going mad! Is that okay?"
"That's fine."
I rubbed my throat, trying to ease the pain.
"Okay, do you smoke?"
"No."
"Do you drink on a weekly basis?"
"No."
"Are you sexually active?"
I felt my cheeks get hot. I didn't want to tell this nurse that Harry and I did the deed.
I nodded even though I didn't want to.
"Okay, well now I'm just going to check your blood pressure and your temperature and all that good stuff."
She said that my blood pressure was still low, but that it would probably go back to normal after I ate. My body temperature was 36 degrees, which was normal. The only thing that wasn't normal was my heart rate. It was still up from my little spell earlier and she said that I may have to stay overnight.
I didn't want to spend the night in the hospital. Hospitals creeped me out with all the germs.
"Well, that's all I have to check on right now. I'll be back with your ice cream and then it'll be another hour before I'm back! Unless you need me that is!" she said, flipping a few switches on the monitors.
"Can Harry come back in now?" I asked.
"Yes, of course!"
She opened the door and he walked in.
"I'll be back!" she said, closing the door behind her.
"They're making me stay tonight," I groaned.
"It's already dark out so you don't have that much longer to go. They'll give you sleeping pills or pain pills if you need them and I'll obviously be here, so it'll be fine."
He pulled the chair up to the side of the bed. He grabbed my hand and rubbed circles onto my palm with his thumb.
There was a knock on the door. Harry let them in, revaling Theresa with ice cream and a bottle of pills.
"Okay, love. I got your ice cream and read up on the doctor's report. It was just like we predicted. Your nerves were just all out of whack, so we're going to keep you here tonight, but you should be good to go by tomorrow. You will have to have someone to be with you 24/7 for at least two weeks. So we nned to know before you leave that you have someone that will do that. Sound good?" she asked, handing me the ice cream and two pills from the jar.
"Sounds good. Will she need any medicine tonight?" Harry asked, looking up at me for approval.
We had known each other for so long that we practically already knew each other's reactions for things. He knew I wouldn't complain about the doctor's verdict with the nurse in the room, even though it was a little ridiculous that somone would have to stay with me constantly for two weeks.
Harry would be there most of the time, but he had had to go to the library for school just that morning. I didn't want to be the one to prevent him from getting his education taken care of.
"Those two pills are the last ones for tonight as long as she can sleep and isn't hurting!" she said, flipping a few more switches.
"Okay, thanks," he said for me as she left.
I eyed the ice cream that was in a small cup. It was vanilla and had chocolate swirled in it. It didn't look appetizing at all and the wooden spoon that they expected me to eat it with didn't add to that factor.
"Eat up," Harry joked.
"Why does someone have to watch me for two weeks?" I asked after taking a bite of the horrible ice cream.
"I guess it's to make sure you're sleeping and eating right and all that. I can take two weeks off from school and by then it'll be Christmas, so we've got it covered."
"I don't know if I want to be around you that long, though," I joked.
My throat burned and my legs still ached from all of the shaking, but I knew that as long as I had him, everything was going to be just fine.
