Chapter 5: This is Clichè
£~~£
Two of the five from the rooftop, Y/N and Karma, jumped down silently, unnoticed in the middle of a rather crisp night, sky showing promise of the rain to come in London, England. The streets were quiet and lit only by dim street lamps. Everything seemed to be still, other than the odd drunk stumbling around through the streets and the homeless who were without shelter.
"Alright guys, keep your guard up and eyes peeled. Jack should be coming by soon and this is the only way in," a female voice called out, breaking the silence of the night.
"Aye aye, Ma'am," came a chorus of three voices in response to the first voice. Looking on a rooftop in the middle of the city there were five people, Y/N, Karma, Nagisa, Rio, and Kayano. They all wore similar black attire, looking like they were discussing something.
Just around the corner were two other people, both male. One was short and was dressed like a regular civilian boy with a beige paperboy hat, Ciel. The other was a tall male with black hair and dressed in a fancy looking trench coat, Sebastian. They, too, looked like they were conversing. All seven had their breaths clouding around them, the duo oblivious to the quin up on the roof.
"Gyaaaaah!," a sudden yell broke through the night, disturbing the seven who were on standby, confusing all of them.
The two on the ground ran to the door, Ciel slamming open the door to the tenement around the corner from where they were standing.
Right after he opened the door, blood splattered on his left cheek, getting but a glimpse of the bloody scene. Not even a moment later, Sebastian covered Ciel's eye with his hand shouting, "You must not look!"d, unable to see the scene past Sebastian. The Ciel threw up after seeing the horrid sight, even if it was only a glimpse, shaking slightly.
"You have made quite a mess of things, Jack the Ripper," Sebastian purred out, about to continue when Y/N jumped in. "Or should I say, Grell Sutcliff." This brought the attention to Y/N and Karma, surprising everyone in front of the two.
Grell got over his shock, stuttering out, "N-no, this is...," he trailed off. "I rushed in because I heard the screams, but she was already...," he tried to make an excuse. "Pathetic," Y/N mumbled to where only Karma heard. "Already... What? We have been keeping an eye on the sole path here all night," Y/N sassily purred at Grell. "How in the world did you manage to enter that room at the end of this blind alley and evade us?" she continued to tease, unraveling Grell's 'reasoning'. "Do you really need to feign innocence, looking as you do?"
Grell's appearance didn't help much with his 'excuse'. He was covered with blood, some even pooling at his feet.
"Enough of this, Mister Grell. No. Even 'Grell Sutcliff' is just an assumed identity, so...what say you cease your silly act Mister'," Grell was completely exposed, no way out of the current situation in sight. The inhuman being was cornered, exposed. "This is technically my first time meeting 'someone of your ilk' in the human world. You did a splendid job of acting like one of them," Karma cooed.
There was suddenly a crazed look on Grell's face. "Tee~Hee! Is that sooo?" he looked like a cornered fox, threatened yet he had something up his sleeve.
The first thing he did was untie his hair, revealing long, silky black locks that went down to his knees. The glasses were thrown away next. Finally, he pulled out a comb from his suit, bringing it to his hair. When he used it though, his black hair turned red. Blood red.
"Hit the nail on the head, you did. I am an actress. And a first-rate one at that", Grell purred out, a wild, insane smirk on his face. "But neither are you 'Sebastian', yes?" the now seemingly genderless creature queried.
"The Young Master gave me that name, so yes, I am 'Sebastian', for now," he was still covering Ciel's eyes. "Oh my, his faithful dog, are you? That type of stud makes me weak in the knees too, he does!" Grell exclaimed.
"Wow. Who knew a genderless supernatural being could be so kinky," Y/N purred as she approached Grell, Karma right on her heels. "I am a female grim reaper and the butler of the butler of the Burnett house, Grell Sutcliff!", she shouted indignantly.
"Ooh! I finally got to show you my true colors! It was utterly mortifying to be seen in front of such a stud such as yourselves with no makeup on! My hair was dreadfully dull too!" she muttered. "Little old me's never run into a devil posing as a butler before, much less two. I was just as shocked as shocked could be at first!"
"Allow me to echo those sentiments, hm?" Sebastian hummed. "For I too have been living for quite some time, but I have never heard of 'someone of your ilk' being a 'butler'", he fired back."Why did you, a 'God' of sorts become a butler?"
"Don't be such a stuffed shirt, sweetie. But...very well. I suppose you could say I fell head over heels for a woman," Grell purred in response. At this, Ciel twitched slightly in Sebastian's hold.
"And that woman is-," she was cut off by a voice coming from the shadows that were approaching at a leisurely pace, as if completely familiar and comfortable, despite the situation. "Whether you hear him out or not, I think you already know Sebastian," out of the shadows came Madam Red, a neutral, yet annoyed look plastered on her face.
"This is so chichè that I knew it was you the moment I knew what all the victims had in common. I knew it was you from the start," Y/N's tone was neutral, almost dead, the only sign that she even held emotion being the bloodlust shining in her deep, E/C eyes. "I miscalculated. I never imagined there would also be someone, much less two, who would see through Grell's disguise," Madam Red seemed serious, yet bored with where things were heading.
"Madam was, of course, on our initial list of suspects. But your alibi was flawless," Ciel murmured, yet everyone heard him. "While you may have the perfect alibi, you could have just sent you butler to do your bidding. It wouldn't take him to long," Y/N purred, impatient with bloodlust, just wanting to get to the fun part. "How could you, Ciel. Y/N. You went as far as to doubt me, your dear aunt?" Madam Red hummed, feigning being wounded and distressed. "If the possibility of one being Jack exists-kin or acquaintance-it matters not," Y/N coldly, yet firmly, stated. "No human on the list of suspects Karma put together could have committed all the murders. Of course, that includes you, Madam. But it is a different story with a reaper as your accomplice,"
With that said, if he could easily enter Mary's room without us noticing, wouldn't he also be able to almost instantaneously transport himself over the long distance between the West end and the East end? And if a servant was to disappear from the party for a matter of minutes, no one would pay any heed," with Y/N elaborating her reasoning, along with the earlier reveal of Grell being a grim reaper, Madam Red was slowly losing her ground and means of proving herself innocent, despite how daunting that task was by this point. "Therefore, only the two of you can be Jack the Ripper."
"Angelina Dallas and Grell Sutcliff! Apart from 'being prostitutes' and 'missing their wombs', there was something else the victims in the Jack the Ripper case have in common. They all underwent a 'certain procedure' at the Royal London Hospital, where Madam Red is employed. After looking through the list of patients, in the order of their surgery dates," Y/N declared, pulling out two pieces of paper, only to unfold just one, giving the other to Karma. "The order in which the victims were killed corresponds perfectly to the order in which they were under the knife."
"Only Mary Kelly, who resided in that tenement, was on that list and 'still alive'. I thought you two would show up if we kept watching here. I didn't much care about saving her, I am just following orders," Y/N articulated. At the mention of Mary Kelly, Ciel looked glanced downward, in shame, regret, and sadness. "...I was unable to save her," Ciel faltered.
"How sad, Ciel, Y/N. My lovely nephew and niece...my...elder sister's children. If you hadn't insisted on getting to the bottom of this, we might've played chess again," Madam Red hung her head, unable to look either in the eye.
"However...I will not yield this time!" she howled, a crazed look entering her blood red eyes.
Madam Red's outburst surprised Ciel, rendering him temporarily frozen in shock. Y/N seemed mildly surprised, only raising an eyebrow Madam Red's cry.
There was a sudden buzz-like sound that was quickly approaching Ciel. Seeing his master in danger, Sebastian was quick to intercept, grabbing a chainsaw right before it got to Ciel. "Wha...wh...what is that?!" Ciel shuddered out, shock settling in further. Quickly pushing away Grell and his chainsaw, Sebastian brought up his guard, ready to attack at a moment's notice.
"Sebastian, Ciel. Stand down," Y/N commanded, relieved that there was finally some action instead of just conversation with increasing tension. "Why should we?" Ciel question, not taking very kindly to being ordered around by someone other than the Queen. "I have direct orders from the Queen to find and kill Jack the Ripper. If you have a problem, talk to Her Majesty," Y/N retorted, unfolding the other paper and handing it to Ciel. "Very well. We'll let you do your job, but we're not leaving," he declared. "Very well. Just don't get in our way," Y/N's eyes were glowing with bloodlust, ready to go after her prey. "Karma. Take care of the reaper," she commanded, voice hollow and echoey. With that command, Karma jumped into action.
"All reapers possess a tool for hunting souls. It is known as...the 'Death Scythe'," Grell monologued. "This is my first time seeing a 'Death Scythe'! I wonder how much damage it can do, how much blood it can draw, how quickly it can draw blood! Oh, just thinking about it makes me giddy all over," Karma might as well have had tiny switchblades poking him by how he couldn't seem to stay still. "A 'Death Scythe' made just for me! It's sharpness, guaranteed," Grell continued to ramble about harmony and souls, her own creation, fashionability, and so on.
"My body's gotten all stiff 'cos I've been a good little Grell this whole time! Now I sooo want to work up a sweat with Y-O-U!" Grell purred at Sebastian, a suggestive look on her face. Her lips were puckered, slight blush on her cheeks, doe eyes, and wiggling her hips ever so slighly. "Would you mind refraining from such sickening displays? Furthermore, I am on duty at present," Sebastian harshly shut her down, but then seemed to doule think, only to make an excuse. "Ahhhhn. You're so stoic! I can't get enough of this side of you either, Sebastian darling!" Grell hollered, waving an arm wildly in Sebastian's direction, a shark-like cheshire grin creeping up her face.
"What 'other side'? I'm pretty sure Sebastian only has one side," Y/N mumbled.
"Let me tell you something...," "Karma, stop stalling. In the name of the Queen and my own evil title, I command you! Hunt that reaper down! Use any means necessary!" Y/N shouted, patients run thin from, what she and Karma thought, at least, wasting time. "Of course, My Lady. Come on out boys!" Karma shouted, confusing everyone standing in the alleyway.
"What are you talking about? We are the only ones here," Ciel asked, thinking Karma had done lost his mind. "Oh. You have much to learn about me and the people who work under me. Baby brother," Y/N purred, not even turning to face him. Just as Grell was about to swing at Karma, though, she froze. She felt as if she was being watched, hunted. Karma and Y/N smirked, knowing what was happening. Sebastian and Ciel were confused, both lost as to the cause of Grell's sudden halt of attack.
"What are you just standing there for! Move!" Madam Red shouted though it was useless. In her current state, Grell couldn't here Madam Red's plead. All she could focus on was the creeping feeling of fear, the feel of a predator nearby about to jump out at her. Right as she forced her head to turn and look in the direction the piercing stare was coming from, it was too later for her to defend.
Out of the shadows, a short male, barely taller than Ciel, with strands of sky blue hair jumped out, hands already moving toward Grell's neck. using one hand to take the knife out of his mouth, he maneuvered it to were it was just over Grell's neck, forcing her to stay still or forfeit her supernatural life. Grell felt as if she was being strangled. It was as if a python was constricting her, air being stolen from her body.
"It's not like you to let us go after the pray, Karma," the figure said, his somewhat feminine, yet deep voice bringing everyone back to earth. "Did running into a reaper really scare you that much that you'd let us take care of it?" a feminine voice asked teasingly from beside Karma. At that, three pairs of eyes shot towards the male, only to see someone in similar attire standing next to him. Karma, though, wasn't bothered in the least. The female, from what the others could tell by their figure, was barely taller than the last mysterious assailant, long, stray locks of blond hair slipping out of their hood. "I think it's nice that he's letting us have some of the fun," a giddy voice said from the entrance of the alleyway. The, also feminine, figure was about as tall as the first person, short, forest green strands of hair popped out from their hood.
"Looks like everyone's here," Y/N purred, taking her knife from her thigh. "Let's get the party started."
