Tulips (part 2)
Kiana finally shifted her eyes back to him, but she noticed he was looking elsewhere. Something a bit lower, so she followed the direction of his eyes, which only ended on her body. Her brows furrowed in confusion, but she still did what any sensible woman would do. She pulled the sweatshirt down a bit more, as if it was quite stretchable and would cover exactly where she needed it to be covered.
Enrico noticed her action and realised she had caught him staring. Refusing to seem startled or anything of that sort, he gently shifts his eyes somewhere else and silently takes in a deep breath to clear his mind. He takes a bite from his apple before turning back to her, trying his best to return his mischievous look to his eyes.
"Well... What are you waiting for? Make dinner." He orders, just so they could forget this entire scene ever happened. Thinking back, Enrico couldn't fathom what took over him; staring at something that he wouldn't find quite attractive on another woman.
Another woman?
Then, he was referring to Kiana as the woman and the rest as another woman. He inwardly shook his head to get rid of all his silly thoughts.
"You do know how to cook, right?" He asked, trying harder to push away his other thoughts. Kiana gave no reply, but let out a little sigh after hesitating for a few seconds. Thereafter, she ventured further into the kitchen and only stopped when she was behind the counter. She stared down at the few things that clearly weren't there a few minutes ago.
"There are more than that in the fridge." He added as he turned to her, his elbows resting on the counter. She took one look at the fridge before shifting her eyes back to him.
"What would you like to eat?" she asked, staring directly at him. The smile on his face broadened, as he slowly chewed the piece of apple in his mouth.
"There's no denying the fact that it's late, so why don't you make something that's filling, satisfying, but at the same time, a little light for the stomach. I can't risk losing my abs." He stated right before displaying a cocky smile.
Her eyes remained on him. No expression. No reaction. Not even a smile. Truthfully, he couldn't make out what was going on in her mind. Finally, she rolled her eyes away from him as she walked to the fridge.
"I'm guessing bread will do the trick." She stated, as she brought out the sliced bread from the fridge and dropped it on the counter in front of him. She stood staring at him.
"Bread?" He asked, a little disappointed as he looked away from it and back to her. Honestly, he rarely ate home-made food, but his mother always took the pleasure of restocking his fridge all the time. She would throw away what seems to have gone bad and stock the fridge with much fresher and better groceries.
"Yes. I'll cut up some vegetables and make a sandwich. That way, you get to keep your abs." She stated as she began the preparation, without sparing him a glance.
A light chuckle escaped his lips as he watched her work. Kiana was refusing to dance to his tune. Clearly, she was trying to act smarter than him. Okay, fine, he was going to let her do what she wants. He took his arms off the counter right after he was done with his apple. He buried his hands into the pockets of his sweatshirt, as he relaxed watching her chop the tomatoes in front of him. His eyes remained on her face as she worked. A little smile slowly formed at the corner of his lips while he stared at her. Two, three years ago, he would have never imagined that someday, Kiana would be standing within his home preparing dinner. The thought was strange. The feeling as well, but somehow, it brought a sudden peace to him. It felt as if time had stopped. The unexplainable was happening and after a long time, he felt genuinely happy.
Kiana didn't want to look up away from what she was doing. It's been a while and Enrico hadn't said a thing. No remark. No order. Nothing. He was strangely quiet, which made her think of the possibility that he might be staring at her. She didn't want to look up either and confirm her suspicion. That would mean meeting his eyes. Her mind was filled with worry, confusion and strange thoughts. She felt the need to look up and yell at him to stop staring.
She could feel his eyes on her, which was making her quite uncomfortable. She had to take extra caution while chopping the tomatoes, just so she wouldn't cut herself by mistake but then again, another question flew across her mind. Why were his eyes on her making her feel this way? People stare all the time. A lot had stared at her, but none made her feel this strange. It was awkward. The feeling of wanting to attain perfection, just because he was staring at her. Kiana inwardly shook that thought away. She concluded that all this was because of years of being separated; the fact they had both grown resulted in this strange tension. It was simply nothing other than that.
"Here." Kiana stated as she placed a plate on which a sandwich laid. He was finally able to shift his eyes away from her and to the food in front of him. She, on the other hand, took the opportunity to take a quick look at him. She quickly looked away as he raised his eyes back to her.
"Do you need anything else?" She asked as she picked up her plate and walked to the other side of the counter to have a seat on one of the stools, a bit farther from him.
He noticed just how much space she had intentionally created between them. It made him a little amused. Perhaps, it was for the best. Kiana waited for a minute, but got no response from him. She concluded that he really needed nothing else. Staring down at the sandwich on her plate, her mouth got watery. Her stomach growled once more and she barely held herself from quickly taking hold of the food in front of her. She gently picked up the sandwich with both of her hands and drew it closer to her mouth, ready to take a bite.
"I'll like a cup of orange juice." Enrico suddenly stated, causing her to hold still on what she had been planning to do. Her mouth slightly agape. Upon hearing his voice, she eventually turned her head to him, giving him a deathly glare, but he just kept an innocent smile on his face, pretending not to understand how annoying his request at this very minute was. Kiana let out a light sigh as she looked away from him, gently settling the sandwich in her hands back on the plate, before getting off the stool and walking back to the fridge. She took out a bottle of orange juice before searching around with her eyes for a glass cup.
"Top, left cupboard." Enrico stated, realising what exactly she was looking for. She gave a nod before getting the cup from exactly where he had told she would find it. She poured some juice into the cup, then set it in front of him before leaving it back in the fridge. She walked back to her seat. Finally, she was able to take a bite off her delicious sandwich. She savoured the taste in her mouth and she gently chewed. Her mind told her to chew with decorum, but her stomach said otherwise. At the end of it all, she chose to listen to her stomach. She took another huge bite off her sandwich, filling her mouth in the process. She chewed quite fast and took another bite as big as her hunger.
She only managed to control herself as she looked up, trying to chew as fast as she could, without having everything fall off her mouth as it was too full. Her head, as well as eyes, shifted to Enrico before she looked away. She shifted her eyes back to him.
Enrico was staring at her with an amusing look in his eyes. She noticed that he had neither touched his food nor his drink. Her brows slightly furrowed at the fact that he remained still and hadn't bothered to look away from her, realising that she had caught him staring. Suddenly, he let out a chuckle as he looked away from her, taking a hand away from his pocket to lightly rub the tip of his nose, before returning it back into his pocket. He turned his head back to her.
"Why did you lie?" He asked a strange question. Kiana's brows furrowed further in confusion, as to what he might be talking about.
"Earlier at the restaurant, I asked you to order something but clearly, you lied." He added and that's when she slowly released her brows, as she got the hang of what he was saying. She gulped down the food in her mouth, as she got ready to speak up.
"I didn't." She murmured a lie, as she looked away from him.
He gave a light gasp as he placed a hand on his chest; a little pretentious surprise drawn across his face.
"Oh, that's right! You didn't. I'm just assuming a lot of things." He stated, quite sarcastically as she shifted her eyes back to him. She furrowed her brows at his act. His smile was back on his face.
"I'm sure it would do you a whole lot good if you set your pride aside once in a while." He added, but her furrowed brows slowly turned into a frown on her face.
"Well, I'm also sure it would do you a whole lot of good if you don't take me along on your dates." She retorted as she released the frown on her face.
"Date?" Enrico asked, with a raised brow before letting out a little chuckle.
"I don't go on dates. If you were smart enough, you would have realised I took you along to sabotage the whole thing."
"Oh. So, I'm, like, your little bomb." She stated rather than asking as she nodded her head in pretentious understanding. He slightly furrowed his brows at her for a second.
"Fine, if you want to put it that way." He commented.
"I see." Kiana simply added as she looked away from him, seemingly ending the discussion on that note. Suddenly, she turned back to him.
"I just want to say that I'm never doing that again." She added, quite meaning her words. He narrowed his eyes at her statement. Clearly, she hadn't gotten the drill of how things worked.
Enrico gave a light snort followed by a display of smile.
"You don't understand anything, do you?" He asked while staring directly at her. She remained silent, just staring back. He got off his stool before taking a few steps backwards. Suddenly, he stopped.
"You work for me and you'll have to do whatever I say, as long as you want to get paid." He stated rather coldly. She shifted her eyes away from him for a few seconds, hating the fact that he was actually right.
Enrico let out a loud sigh, causing her to shift her eyes back to him. He displayed a broad smile on his face.
"I think I've lost my appetite. Food shouldn't be wasted so make sure mine isn't." He stated, before turning and walking heads on towards the staircase.
Kiana rolled her eyes away from him, quite irritated by his attitude. If only she wasn't so helpless, she wouldn't be here tolerating his nonsense.
...sabotage the whole thing.
She recalled his exact words. She couldn't seem to understand what made him think of such an idiotic act. He shouldn't have accepted to meet up with her if he wasn't interested in the first place. She couldn't fathom what made Enrico think that bringing her along will make a beautiful and successful woman like Cecile vexed or perhaps, jealous. Kiana shook her head at the whole thought of it. It was a proven thing that Enrico was insane. A mirage of his opposite self. If someone had told her that he would turn out this way, then she would never have believed that person. Truly, he was a different man. Kiana pushed the last piece of her sandwich into her mouth and chewed quite silently, as she shifted her eyes to Enrico's plate.
...make sure mine isn't.
She recalled his last words as she stared at his untouched sandwich.
"He's so full of himself." Kiana stated almost in a whisper, her mouth almost too full to speak, while she had one hand slightly over her mouth.
She kept staring at his sandwich on his plate. She sighed right after she gulped down. Honestly, she was still hungry and Enrico did state that food shouldn't be wasted. Kiana wanted to stay strong and pretend like his words weren't going to work on her, but her urge was getting stronger by the second.
"Fine!" She finally stated, before getting off her stool and walked towards the plate. She took her seat right on the next stool, next to the one Enrico had sat on. Enrico had left for his room and he was nowhere to be seen. A brief smile formed on her face at that knowledge. She took hold of the bread before taking a huge bite from it. She chewed before deciding to gulp down some of the juice along with it.
Enrico barely stood beside the rail for fear of her having to see him staring down at her, as she munched on his own sandwich. A small smile surfaced by the corner of his lips. All she really had to do was speak the truth. There was no doubt that he would eventually succumb to her request.
