Queen Anne's Lace (part 2)

Enrico, now all freshened up and with a towel wrapped around his waist, stood in front of the mirror in his bathroom. He stared at his blurry reflection for what seemed like a moment, before he finally reached for his glasses lying beside the sink. He gazed back into the mirror, at his reflection after putting on the glasses and that time, his vision was clearer. He just stood there, staring at nothing in particular as his mind wandered off.

I love you.

He recalled her exact words and the very moment when she confessed her feelings. A light chuckle escaped his lips. She tried so hard to tell him. If only he realised earlier that was what she wanted to say to him, he would have made it back to the office right away and on time. He never imagined that his dreams could someday become his reality. Kiana was finally his and fate actually let it happen. Perhaps, they are meant to be together after all. That thought alone kept him smiling as he thoroughly dried his wet hair with a towel.

After getting dressed in something much more comfortable, Enrico opened the medicine cabinet in his bathroom and searched for something good enough for Kiana to take. She might have thought that he didn't notice the fact that she was in a little pain, but he actually did. He was going to take care of that for her.

He got off a call before making his way out of his room and down the stairs. Halfway through, he noticed Kiana walking out of hers and making her way directly towards the kitchen. His brows slightly seized up.

"Where are you going?" He asked, causing her to turn right away to him in a light startle.

She stared at him, a bit dumbfounded for a moment. He made his way down the last stairs and towards her.

"Kitchen." She finally replied, although a little too late.

"I'm going to make dinner." She added, before taking the first two steps forward. Enrico quickly took hold of her hand to stop her from taking any steps further.

"No, you're not." He stated, before dragging her along with him towards the very same kitchen.

"Do I really have to carry you all the time for you to understand what I'm trying to say?" He rhetorically asked, as he let go of her hand and found a glass cup, then took out a jug of water from the fridge and poured some for her.

She watched him, whilst a little confused about almost everything that was presently going on. He set the cup of water on the counter in front of her and she looked from it and back up to him.

He got out from his pocket the little container in which the pills resided in.

"You don't have to pretend to be okay in front of me. There will always be a difference between me and them." He stated, as he opened up the container and Kiana kept staring at him without uttering a word.

He took hold of her hand and let about two pills roll right onto her palm, before he shut the container. She couldn't help, but stare at the pills on her palm.

"Pain relievers." He stated, as he noticed how strangely she stared at the pills. Kiana raised her eyes to him.

"Have them and you'll feel much better in a while." He told her, with a simple smile.

"But I'm ok..."

"Don't lie." He reprimanded right away and Kiana could see the seriousness in his eyes. She felt guilty and had to lower her eyes away from his. She felt a little stupid for even attempting to lie, when clearly, he already figured it all out. She hadn't intended on lying to him. All she really didn't want to do was burden him with this little problem. She really believed, a little rest and she would be good as new.

"I'm sorry." She apologised in a sigh.

"Kiana, you don't have to apologise. I do understand." He told her, hating the sad look on her face. All he wanted to do was wipe them away. His intention wasn't to scold her or anything of that sort. Sure, it did sound that way, but that wasn't his aim. All he really wanted to do was let her know she wasn't alone.

"You just have to... learn to lean a bit more on me. You don't have to do it right away... little by little would do." He explained, hoping she understood exactly what he was trying to say.

They stared into each other's eyes for a moment and Kiana could see how much he cared about her. It made her feel a little silly for doing what she did in the first place. A slow but simple smile curled up on her face. He smiled back. Kiana took in a deep breath before picking up the glass of water. She put the pills into her mouth before gulping down a good deal of water. Afterwards, she set the cup back on the counter and looked up to Enrico with a broad smile on her face.

A light chuckle escaped his lips, as his eyes remained on her. Her smile grew broader.

"Now, am I allowed to make dinner? After all, it is getting late." She asked, still putting on the same smile.

"No."

"No?" She repeated with raised brows.

"Yes. You're not well, so you won't stress yourself." He explained, as he walked up to her. Her eyes followed him all the way.

Suddenly, he bent and swept her off her feet and into his arms. She stared at him with surprise drawn across her face, regardless of the fact that her arms hung around his neck for support.

"I ordered food, so you need to rest." He added, while carrying her in his arms.

"You don't... have to carry..."

"You're doing it again." He stated, reminding her of the discussion they just had not too long ago. Kiana got a hint of exactly what he was talking about, so she took in a silent and deep breath.

He walked towards the living room and only stopped when he was in front of the sofa. Gently, he set her to sit on the sofa, then took his seat right beside her. He lightly tapped his shoulder.

"Rest." He told her and she looked from his face to his shoulder, then back up to his face. He stared at her with slightly raised brows. The look in his eyes, a bit questioning and Kiana had a good understanding of what question that might be. There was no need beating around the bush.

Slowly, she leaned closer and Enrico adjusted his sitting position due to the difference in their height. At the end, his sitting position became perfect for her. His shoulder didn't seem so far away and she was able to gently rest her head on it. For the first few moments, she had her muscles all tensed up and not relaxed like it should be, but eventually, she decided to give in. Yes, this was all new to her, but she wasn't about to spoil what they seem to have going on.

Finally relaxed, Kiana raised her eyes to him, but he stared ahead at nothing in particular. He had his arms folded below his chest. She knew she needed to look away and get some rest like he suggested, but she just couldn't. It all still seemed like a dream. A few months ago, she never imagined that her path would ever cross his again and now, they're actually in love. He was being so nice and caring. Although Kiana didn't mention it a lot, she was actually grateful for his presence and for this opportunity.

A slow but sure smile grew on her face while still staring at him. If only time could come to a standstill. If only they could remain like this forever, life would be perfect.

"Kiana, I know." He suddenly started, before turning his head and staring down at her. She still couldn't look away. A cocky smile drew across his face.

"I get it. I'm too handsome to look away from, but you have to control yourself and do the right thing." He continued, still wearing the same cocky smile.

Kiana stared at him for a moment without uttering a word and only battering her eyes lashes. Suddenly, she let out a scoff as she lowered her eyes away from him.

"Handsome? I've definitely seen better looking men." She stated nearly in a whisper, regardless of the fact that almost everything about her sentence was a lie. Yes, he was handsome, but she wasn't about to admit that fact to his face. It wouldn't hurt for him to be a little modest.

Enrico slightly furrowed his brows at her last statement.

"Better looking men?" He repeated.

"You've seen better looking men... I presume on the television... actors?" He asked, clearly refusing to give up on the topic.

Kiana didn't know where it was heading to, but she was clearly enjoying this part where he thinks he isn't alone after all. She barely watched the television or movies. Nevertheless, she was going to nod and that was exactly what she did.

Enrico released his brows from its former ceased up position. He thought for a moment about her reply, before something else popped up in his mind. Something that made him feel a little insecure.

"Your... ex?" He questioned and for a moment, Kiana didn't understand what he meant, but eventually, it all became clear. He was obviously trying to find out about her ex. Unfortunately, the only problem was that there was never an ex in her life. She had been too busy to develop a relationship with any man, but she wasn't about to give up this information so easily.
She raised her eyes up to him and she could read something else on his face, in his eyes. A desperation for her to tell him what he needed to hear. She had barely said anything and the word jealous was boldly written across his. It was a bit cute and amusing altogether. Someone is actually jealous on her behalf and she never imagined this day would come true. Enrico was jealous. She had to pin down the urge to laugh out loud, so instead, she displayed a smile and acted a lot like she was ready to speak.

Finally, she shut her eyes and lowered her head.

"You're right. I do need some rest." She commented, as she relaxed properly to her own comfort.

Enrico's brows slowly furrowed at her and he was forced to look away. She gave him no answer, not even the one he needed to hear and it, sort of, made him a bit angry.

Eventually, he shifted his eyes back to her. Her eyes were shut as she remained still beside him. For a moment of staring at her, a simple smile played on his face. Also, he somewhat forgot what their discussion had been about or the insecure feelings he had during that moment. He simply realised it didn't matter what her past looked like or whom she had dated. This was the present and in that present, she was his. His one true love. He loved her and she loved him. That was all that matters. He couldn't believe how blessed he was.

He felt the itch in his fingers to somehow touch her and this time, he wasn't going to hold back. Gently, he unfolded his arms, so as not to disturb her, then slowly brought his hand closer to her face. Even a light stroke on her cheek would suffice. He just needed a simple touch. As his fingers drew closer and closer towards her face, each finger itching to fit its purpose, the doorbell suddenly rang. Enrico froze.

Kiana opened her eyes and not after battering her lashes a few times did she notice Enrico's hand. He withdrew his hand, and she raised her eyes to him, as she leaned her head away from his shoulder. They stared at each other for a moment before the bell rang once more. Both eyes shifted to the door.

"I think the food's here." Enrico stated, as he immediately got up from his seat.

"Food?" Kiana repeated, as her eyes followed him all the way to the door. She watched him slightly open the door, but she barely got a look at who stood behind the door. She watched Enrico collect about two polythene bags from the person, said a few words, then made the needed payment. Eventually, the door was shut and he made his way back to her. He only had his seat after setting it all on the centre table in front of them.

"Here." He stated with a white takeaway pack stretched out to her.

"Thank you." She appreciated, as she collected it from him.

She stared at the pack for a moment, then raised her eyes back to him only to catch him staring at her. A brief smile portrayed on his face. She managed to smile back.

"Are you okay?" He asked, as he noticed something different about her.

He watched as she thought for a second, a clear evidence of contemplation.

"I'm okay." She finally replied, but Enrico wasn't convinced with the answer he got. Nevertheless, he watched her open the pack and without wasting much time, she threw him a comforting smile, then began having her food. He watched her for a while as she took her time chewing and scooping the next round into her mouth. A part of him still wasn't convinced that she was okay. He would love to find out what her problems were, but at the same time, he didn't want to push her into telling him everything. Perhaps, he was going to wait for her own time to speak up.

Kiana took a glance at Enrico and realised he's been staring at her all this while and hadn't touched his food. It made her wonder what was going on in his mind. She slightly wiggled both brows at him in question of what was going on with him. The one second dance her brows made caused a wide smile to appear on his face.

"Are you okay? You haven't touched your food." She questioned out of curiosity and care. Enrico was silent for a while before speaking.

"How can I eat when I have you by my side? Loving you has diluted the hunger I could ever have." He quoted, much to her surprise. He hadn't planned on saying all that, but he eventually did.

Kiana stared at him for a while, without a word in mind. Although he might be joking, his comment really took her by surprise. She slightly cringed.

"You really sound cheesy. It's a little unlike you." She stated, feeling a bit amused and uncomfortable at the same time.

"I'm cheesy, because I tell the truth?" He questioned, while the expression on his face laid unreadable for Kiana. She couldn't tell if he was annoyed or probably joking. Did she hurt him? There was a certain seriousness in his eyes and it scared her that she might have done this all wrong. It really wasn't her intention to make a jester out of him.

"Enrico..." She attempted, but the rest of her words trailed away as a slow but sure smile grew on his face. Eventually, he burst into a light laughter. She stared at him a little confused.

"Relax, I'm just joking." He commented, but Kiana barely understood why he would joke about this. Regardless of everything, she found a way to smile as she watched the smile on his face. Unknowingly, she heaved a sigh of relief and in that very moment, she realised just how scared she was of his anger. It made her recall what she had promised herself to confess to him by the next day.

As she watched him open the takeaway pack in his hand, she could only do nothing, but pray that everything eventually works out to her advantage.

She could only pray.
