Varian is Concerning

A/n: filler again idk why i wrote this lmao

Waking up with other people laying on either side of him was oddly comforting for Varian. This was certainly something he could get used to. Maybe he should trauma dump more often, it always seemed to work out in his favor.

One look at a pocket watch confirmed what Varian could pick up from looking at the light streaming through the curtains. It was early. Way too early to wake up Eugene and Rapunzel, but probably too late to try and go back to sleep.

The boy looked between his options on the bedside table of what he could do. There was the urinal bottle that Cassandra had picked up from the doctor—well, he certainly had to pee. He'd just woken up after all. But he couldn't just pee while Rapunzel was asleep next to him, what if he accidentally woke her up? That would just be absolutely humiliating. Plus, it was gross and Eugene would bully him relentlessly. He'd have to hold it for a little whie.

Notepad? No, it was too early to go through equations, he thought he would die if he did any sciencing so early in the morning.

Diary? ...Could he even reach it?

He reached his arm over Rapunzel and opened his little drawer, grabbing his diary. Yes! He knew having long, lanky arms would come in handy one of these days!

He sat back down, puffing out a breath of exhaustion. He set up his quill and Ink on a small tray in front of him, and sat up to write. He hummed in thought as he wondered what he should write about.

Hi

I don't think i'm going to say 'dear diary' anymore because Cass started bullying me and told me that it made me sound like a twelve year old girl, so I guess that's out the window. I cringe every time I write dear diary now, so I guess i'll just stop.

Oh by the way, Rapunzel and Eugene slept on either side of me in bed last night because I had a nightmare. I'll probably tell you in detail what it was about later, but yeah. I told them all about the rape yesterday, so it had to do with that. And today, I woke up before them because of course I did.

So i'm using you as a distraction because I really need to pee. As you know, I can't walk so climbing over them to get to the bathroom would probably kill me. And if my body didn't kill me, Cassandra would. Also I can't just use the urinal bottle because, like, that's just ew. Even if she doesn't wake up, i'd feel bad.

Anyway, let me tell you about my teenage rebellion.

Well, I had to be convinced by Lance and Eugene, so technically it's not rebellion. But Rapunzel told me to stay in the bed, and to be fair, she's much more of an adult than Eugene and Lance combined.

So, we were hanging out with each other, as dudes do. And Lance suddenly had a bright idea to bring me onto the balcony so that I could get some sunlight. I actually pride myself on my pasty, pale skin but whatever.

So they attempted to bring me onto the balcony but I almost died when the curtains opened, so Eugene got me these things called sunglasses? They must be some new trends in style because i've never heard of them. So I put them on and we went outside(they had to carry me)and sat in some chairs for like an hour. It felt so good, it was so warm.

We didn't tell Rapunzel or Cassandra. Now that I think about it, if anybody like, especially a guard spotted me from down below I would have been dead. So yeah, this is my teenage rebellion secret i'm taking to my grave because Cass wouldn't be happy if we told her.

Lance is horrible at keeping secrets, so she's bound to find out eventually.

"Good morning Varian!" Rapunzel chirped.

He slammed his diary shut and let out a yelp of surprise, Eugene literally snorting at him. His face flushed, "Rapunzel, don't scare me like that!"

The woman giggled, "sorry! What are you doing?"

"Well I was writing in my diary. Which—which you can not read by the way! Very, very secret secrets!" He said, very suspiciously, "now don't look, I have to tell it bye!"

Eugene chuckled, rubbing the sleep from his eyes, "you say bye to it?"

"What if it has feelings?!" Varian mumbled, writing down a quick 'i'll trauma dump later, love birds woke up, byeeee —Varian'

"I don't think a book has feelings" Eugene deadpanned, "what happened to you being a man of science?"

"A book with feelings wouldn't be the craziest thing that's happened to us" Rapunzel joked.

"I suppose not" Eugene sighed.

"So, how long have you been awake?" Rapunzel questioned, turning to Varian.

"I've actually been awake for a little over half an hour" he said, "I barely even wrote a page, writing is exhausting."

Eugene's eyes bulged and he immediately glanced at the urinal bottle. The kid hadn't used it yet. Of course he hadn't. He glanced back to the kid, who was squirming, trying to be subtle.

"Oh! Well sorry to keep you waiting!" Rapunzel said, "Cass is up early doing lady in waiting duties, and Lance is most likey writing love letters to Adira, so I think i'll just pick up some breakfast and Eugene can keep you company for a little while" Rapunzel said,"need anything else?"

He forced a big, fake smile and brought his knees to his chest, tapping his feet against the bed to distract himself, "nope, thank you!"

She got up, "okay then. Bye!"

"Bye Rapunzel!" Varian chirped.

"...You're dying to pee, aren't you?" Eugene asked as soon as the door shut behind Rapunzel.

He let out a puff of air, "Sun, yes I thought she'd never leave!" Varian groaned. The boy grabbed the bottle and adjusted it underneath his gown.

"Yeah, I think i'm gonna go answer nature's call too" Eugene said, getting up and going to the direction of the bathroom, mostly just to give the kid some privacy.

"Lance...what are you doing?" Cassandra asked cautiously, not really knowing if he even knew the answer.

"I heard that Kiera and Catalina live in a tree house, I just wanted to send them some letters. Tell them we're back and ask if they need anything" Lance explained.

Cassandra raised a brow, "oh, angry and red? They have names? Weird. Alright then." She leaned against the door frame, "You...really care about those girls, huh?"

Lance nodded, "they've strangely become like...you know, like family? I never really knew what that felt like."

The woman gave him a kinder smile, "well, i'm happy for you, Lance. Let's hope they find some way to respond. Not sure where they'd get paper from. Oh—and good for you, by the way."

"What do you mean?"

"I didn't know that you knew how to write" she shrugged.

Lance glared, "Hey now—!"

"Hey, Cass" Varian mumbled as the woman entered into the room. His eyes were drooping, almost closed, "Rapunzel came...gave me medicine? I think..."

Cassandra smirked, walking over with an ice pack, "Yeah. She said your ribs were feeling a little sensitive, so I got this for you."

Varian's eyes were half lidded as he adjusted his ice bag to his ribs, "thanks Cass" he said, letting his eyes slip shut, a sigh exiting his lips.

The woman smirked, "which medicine did she give you this time? You seem excessively sleepy."

"Uh...it was another pain killer" he mumbled, eyes still shut, "can't...word now. M'tired."

"No other side affects? Just tiredness?" She questioned. Varian simply nodded before drifting off to sleep. She rolled her eyes and shook her head, before ruffling his hair, "have good dreams, Vari."

"Awe that was SO sweet!" A voice half mocked half squealed from the door.

Cassandra jumped, before narrowing her eyes and growling, "Not another word, Fitzherbert."

Just around an hour after Cassandra and Eugene left to give Varian some time alone to sleep, the boy woke up, his limbs feeling heavy, his body feeling weak. He let out a strained whimper, groaning as he tried to sit up. His head tipped from side to side as he tried to keep himself awake. He fell backwards back onto his pillow and fell back asleep for a solid five minutes.

The next time he woke up, consciousness came to him very slowly, and only because his bladder was starting to irritate him.

Whimpering, he finally found the strength to push himself up and grab the urinal bottle. He sighed deeply, closing his bleary eyes as he adjusted the bottle under his gown. He began to piss full force, sighing with relief. His head was pounding, and his body was exhausted. And why did he feel wet?

His eyes snapped open when he realized that he was missing the bottle entirely. He jumped up and gasped, quickly fiddling with the bottle. He was unable to stop his thick, gushing stream, and by now the bed was soaking wet. He let out a cry of frustration at burning tears prickling at his eyes. His heart was pumping fast as he peeled the covers away to assess the damage.

It wasn't horrible. But the mattress was probably soaked. Sun above, the others were probably sick and tired of having to clean his piss up so often! He was nearly sixteen years old, he wasn't meant to be having accidents! He felt tears spill down his cheeks. He was pathetic.

Sniffling, he placed the very empty urinal bottle back on the bedside table, and tried to at least get his heart rate and tears under control before someone came back. It was already humiliating enough that he was constantly pissing his pants like an infant, he didn't need to be acting like one too. He wiped his tears away and let out a shaking breath. He was fine.

The door opened. He was not fine.

"Oh, Vari! You're awak—" he met eyes with Eugene, who immediately noticed the mess, because of course Varian's dumb ass left the blankets off.

He burst into tears as soon as Eugene cut himself off. He was probably annoyed. And he hated that, because Eugene had been doing so much for him, and Varian didn't deserve it.

"It wasn't your fault, Varian" Eugene told him, recovering from his shock quickly, "it's okay. When have we ever been mad at an accident? Come on, we can get you all cleaned up."

Varian had his head ducked down low, sitting in the bed, soaked in a cooling puddle of his own urine.

Eugene continued, "don't be upset, these things happen. Your body is very weak right now, it's under a lot of stress trying to make you better, and who knows? These constant accidents could be something like a—like a trauma response. Plus, you were asleep—"

"But I wasn't" Varian whispered, tears streaming down his face, "I was awake."

"Oh. Well, it's like I said, your body has other, more important things to focus on then trying to keep the waste in" Eugene explained. He wasn't sure how true that was. Maybe if he could just make himself sound confident and smart, Varian would believe him.

"...But this time it was my fault. I...I missed" he murmured, face darkening.

"You...missed..." Eugene said slowly.

Varian nodded.

"Can you elaborate?" Eugene questioned.

"I—I don't know, I just woke up and was really tired, and thought I had it placed right. So I started going and just...couldn't stop" he explained, cringing.

"Wow" Eugene chuckled lightly, "you really have the worst possible luck. How about we get you cleaned and changed? Cassandra filled the closet with sheets, blankets and hospital gowns so we can just do it all in here."

Varian nodded, "thank you. I...I'm sorry that you have to deal with this."

Eugene smiled lightly, sitting on the edge of the bed and ruffling Varian's hair, "team awesome looks out for each other, buddy. Besides, you'll get the chance to return the favor. The outlook for me being responsible enough to have kids doesn't look so good, so when i'm old and grey and cant walk or move anymore, you can wipe my ass for me instead, okay?" He joked, clapping Varian on the back.

Varian snorted, "that's disgusting. I'd sooner put you in the nursing home."

"Hey, i'm probably going to have to wipe your ass one of these days—"

"I would rather tear open my stitches than have you do that, so don't even go there" Varian said, "seriously. I'm being so for real right now."

Eugene rolled his eyes, "it's really not that big of a deal!"

"Yes it is! Mr. Clean-pristine-can't-touch-dirt-or-i'll-die!" Varian exclaimed, "trust me. You'd rather die than clean that up. Besides, I can move around more now, I could totally reach."

"I dunno..." Eugene drawled out.

"I will tender my resignation from team awesome if you ever wipe me. That is disgusting!" Varian cried.

Eugene smirked at how red Varian's face was getting and how high-pitched his voice had become. Mission accomplished. He chuckled, "alright, alright. I'm just teasing. Now let's get you cleaned up. Oh, speaking of, last time, Cassandra had the forethought to put a mattress protector on the bed, so all we have to do is change the sheets."

"That's good" Varian mumbled.

"Yep! Now how about I set you down in the bathtub, and since you're oh-so-modest, i'll leave you to change your clothes and grab you a bucket to rinse off with. Call me if you need any help, okay?" Eugene questioned.

Varian nodded, "I don't think i'll be able to stand up on my own."

"Obviously. Look at you" Eugene teased, "Maybe if we're quick, nobody else will even have to know about this, okay?"
