10. Reunions

"You remember all of them."

They did not, in fact, make it.

The helicopter crashed gently as it could into a dirt roadway. Becca held onto her aunt as the helicopter crash landed, the teenager did her best to ignore Alexei but it was difficult. His staring was getting under her skin. He had no idea she was related to Captain America, or Winter Soldier though he had his suspicions.

Natasha pushes the helicopter door open to let everyone out. Yelena and Becca follow behind as they survey where they are, trying to figure out how far they'll need to walk. All the while Alexei is still watching Becca. His world had been shifted. He looks over the broken down helicopter and then looks back at Natasha and Becca, "You should have brought the Avengers' superjet." He murmurs. He then turns to look at Becca, "Perhaps your uncle has a jet, yes?"

Becca narrows her eyes and does her best to ignore Alexei. The three women gather and begin to walk and Yelena speaks for the first time since they exited the helicopter. "I swear, if i hear one more word from him, i will kick him in the face." Yelena gripes under her breath.

"I'll hold him down for you." Becca adds and Yelena smirks at the brunette.

"Natasha." Alexei says but the women keep walking, "Rebecca. Natasha." He continues, jogging slightly to try and keep up. "Come here. I want to ask you something." He says, "Come, it's important." He tells the two women, Yelena on the other hand keeps walking with their bag of supplies.

"What?" Becca asks and crosses her arms in annoyance.

Alexei and the two girls keep walking at a slower pace than Yelena as he begins his question, "Did he talk to you about me? Either of you?" He asks as he slides his hands into his pockets. Becca rolls her eyes as she instantly knows who he's talking about. Her Uncle Steve.

"What?" Natasha asks in confusion.

"Did, he, talk, to you about me?" Alexei repeats his question slower for Natasha. "You know, trading war stories?"

"Who? Who are you talking about?" Natasha asks, still confused.

"Captain America!" Alexei shouts in a whisper. "My great adversary in this theater of geopolitical conflict. Not so much a nemesis. Like eh... more like a contemporary, you know? Coequal.." He states and Becca groans, her head leaning back. "I always thought there was a great deal of mutual respect..."

Before Becca can respond, Natasha speaks up. "Wait. You haven't seen any of us in twenty years and you're going to ask us about you?" Natasha snaps, causing Yelena to stop walking and pause, turning to look back at them.

"What is with this tension?" Alexei asks in confusion. He then looks at the three of them and smirks, "Did i do something wrong?" He asks sarcastically.

Yelena stands there stunned for a moment and then looks at Alexei, "Is that a serious question?" She asks in disbelief.

"I only ever loved you girls." Alexei states. "I did my best to make sure you would succeed. To achieve your fullest potential and everything worked out."

Becca reels and scoffs, "Everything worked out?" She questions.

"Yes. For you? Yes." Alexei states, looking at Becca in shock that she would ask that. He then turns to the the girls, "We accomplished our mission in Ohio. Yelena, you went on to become the greatest child assassin the world has ever known." He states, walking to Yelena, his arms slightly open as he steps closer to her. "No one can match your efficiency, your ruthlessness." He praises Yelena and then turns to Natasha. "Natasha.... Not just a spy, not just toppling regimes, destroying empires from within, but an Avenger..." he praises Natasha and then turns to Becca, "And Rebecca. The Winter Storm, poised to take the Winter Soldier's place, continue his legacy, improve upon it.. Your stealth and accuracy is unparalleled. You picked up skills as if you'd always known them. Sinclair's prized weapon." Becca cringes at the last part of what Alexei says, she still didn't like hearing Sinclair's name. But it was coming up more and more as they tracked down Dreykov. The two leaders were close as Alexei had said in the helicopter. "You three have killed... so many people." Alexei says, grabbing Natasha and Yelena's wrists, shaking their hands as Becca stands in between them. "Your ledgers must be dripping... just gushing red.." Alexei praises, on the verge of tears almost as he pulls the two girls to him, squishing all three of them to him. "I couldn't be more proud of you." He tells them.

Natasha pulls back, recoiling away from Alexei almost instantly, "I'm going to get us a ride." She snaps. But the young children in Becca and Yelena keep them there in Alexei's arms. He pats them both, kissing the tops of their heads.

"Okay... no..." Yelena mumbles, "Let go of me, now.." She mutters as she pushes away from Alexei. "You smell really bad." She states bluntly as she walks away.

"Rebecca?" Alexei questions, the brunette not moving.

"The only people i've killed..." She mumbles in his arms, "Have been my family." She whimpers, finally pushing away from Alexei. "I was never sent on missions, i was locked up. Poked. Prodded. My blood taken from me whenever they needed it. Whenever he demanded it. My first mission-" Becca stammers, remembering the night she thought she had killed her mother on the rooftop beside her father. "My first mission, i was tasked to kill my Mama. I was led to believe i had done it for days." She states, tears clouding her vision. "Then, then i'm free... or- or at least i thought i was... until he appears in my life again, but this time, as Uncle Ben's lab partner at Oscorp." She rambles, tears falling as she crouches to her knees on the ground. Her arms wrapping around herself. "And he compelled me- he forced me to kill Uncle Ben!" She screams in agony, she still had never forgiven herself for killing Uncle Ben, even if Peter had, even if it truly was Sinclair's fault. Becca had still pulled the trigger. "The man that i saw- that Benji- the man i had come to love as a father figure... I pulled the trigger and i watched him fall before my feet." She weeps. "It's just as what Papa said once..." She whimpers as she cries, "You remember all of them."

Natasha and Yelena stand near Becca, one of them ready to comfort her. But they knew she needed to overcome her past eventually, and she wouldn't always have someone beside her to help pick up the pieces.

"Who is this Benji person?" Alexei asks confused and curious.

"Shut up." Yelena snaps in Becca's defense as the brunette regains her composure.

"I merely asked a question.." Alexei says in disbelief.

"Don't ask questions." Yelena retorts.

After a few minutes of Becca letting out emotions she didn't even realize were there, she stands up and the group continues to walk towards where Alexei said Melina was staying. Natasha stops walking as she pulls out her burner phone to call Mason. "You're alive." Becca hears Mason on the other end of the call.

"Uh, yeah. I am." Natasha says, wrapping her arm around Becca's shoulders, kissing her temple before saying more to Mason, "I need a friend." She tells Mason. "I know... I am above my tab you might not want to extend me a line of credit..."

"You should come in from the snow. It's cold out there." Mason says and Becca's eyes widen, as does Natasha's. "It's cozy inside."

"You're the best." Natasha responds after she processes what's happened with Mason.

"So, what do you need?"

"A lift. Three passengers." Natasha says and Becca hesitates. Three? There were four of them. Why would Natasha say four unless she didn't want to count someone intentionally.

"Any unique circumstances?" Mason asks.

"A van should do." Natasha responds, keeping her voice normal as Yelena looks between Alexei and Becca with raised eyebrows.

"Coordinates?"

"Fifty-three, ninety, sixty-seven North. Twenty-seven, sixty-six, seventy-one East. Tomorrow. Six a.m." Natasha responds.

"I'll be there." Mason says before he and Natasha hang up their phones.

"Aunt Tasha.." Becca mutters worried as the aunt pries open her phone, destroying it and chucking it to the ground with a sigh of frustration.

"My contact's burned." Natasha says to the group.

"What does that mean? We're walking?" Alexei comments.

Becca looks at her aunt in confusion, "Why did you say three passengers, there's four of us.."

"Because the only person who could burn Mason, is Ross." Natasha states, leaning in towards Becca so Yelena and Alexei don't hear them talking. "And i refuse to let him get his hands on you, Маленький волк." Little Wolf. Natasha says, kissing Becca's forehead, "You're too important." She whispers before they walk to catch up with Yelena and Alexei who are up ahead.

"Are we there yet?" Yelena asks after a while of  continuous walking.

"You'll know when we're there." Alexei responds and then makes the noises of a pig snorting. He then looks at Becca as they continue walking down the side of a small mountain. "What is he like? Are we similar?"

Becca raises an eyebrow and then rolls her blue eyes. "You two are nothing alike." She states, "Uncle Steve is a good man who would do anything to save another life. You... you wouldn't do that."

"You'd rather let someone else take the bullet before yourself." Natasha adds.

"You have to protect yourself before others, otherwise you are creating more of a problem rather than solving it." Alexei retorts. Though he had some logic behind his words, it still didn't equate what Steve would do to save others.

"Even if he only would save one life... Uncle Steve wouldn't care what it cost him." Becca states, "He is, first and foremost... a good man. He has morals, he upholds them. He instills virtue and pride in people for their country."

"You don't do that." Yelena states bluntly.

All Alexei can do is remain silent, taking in their words. The rest of the walking is silent as they reach the fenceline of where Melina resides. And when they approach the fence, Melina is waiting for them with a sniper rifle in her arms. The black haired woman looked over the four people on the opposite side of the fence, taking in their appearances.

"Honey...." Alexei mutters with a breathless smile, taking in Melina's appearance. "We're home." But Melina doesn't respond as Alexei thought she would. She simply walks past the four of them silently. Alexei smiles, simply being in her presence was enough to make him genuinely smile. "Come on, girls." He whispers to the three of them as he follows Melina. The girls were skeptical about where Melina was leading them. But they didn't have much of a choice but to follow if they wanted information about Dreykov and the Red Room.

As they walked into the smallish home, Melina speaks for the first time. "Welcome to my humble abode. Make yourself at home." She states as the girls look around different parts of the home. "Let's have a drink." Melina mutters under her breath with a sigh.

As Melina opens a cabinet and unlocks a secret room filled with computers and weapons, Natasha leans towards the room and Melina, pushing Becca behind her slightly. "Hey, no funny business."

Melina looks at Natasha with a slightly shocked expression, "I'm putting away my weapon." She retorts with raised eyebrows. Wondering why Natasha was so on edge towards her.

Becca glances towards the small living and dining room when she hears the floor creak with the sound of a chair being pulled. She sees Yelena sitting down at the empty table, sitting in the same chair she would sit in at their dining table in Ohio. It was all Yelena knew. And being back with her fake family, it stirred up emotion she had buried deep within herself, just as Becca had done.

"Are there any booby traps around here? Anything we need to know about?" Natasha asks Melina as the mother figure steps out of the weapons vault.

"I didn't raise my girls to fall into traps." Melina comments with a sad smile on her face as she takes in Natasha and Becca.

"You didn't raise us at all." Natasha quips as she fills a glass of water for herself.

"Oh.. maybe so." Melina mutters, "But, if you got soft, it wasn't on my watch." She retorts. Becca looks Melina over slowly, taking in how much she'd changed in twenty years, how much she had aged. Becca knew she didn't age much since she'd last been with these people. But it hit her how much they'd aged since then. She was used to being around people that were like her, slower aging, or no aging at all. Her uncle, mother and father were all that way. Her mother was forever twenty three years old. Her uncle was slowly aging again, she could see it since she first saw him back in 2014. Just the few years he'd been out of the ice, she could tell he was aging, but very slowly. Same with her father. In and out of cryosleep for decades.

The three women sat in their respective seats when they reached the table. Natasha across from Melina who sat beside Yelena. Becca beside Natasha. Just like it had been twenty years ago. They all sat in silence as they heard Alexei groaning and grunting from the bathroom.

"Auntie-" Becca mutters but Natasha shakes her head, silencing her niece.

After more grunts from the bathroom, Melina grabs the bottle of alcohol. "Let's drink." She states abruptly. After Melina pours the drinks, a throat is cleared from behind them. Becca leans her head slightly to see Alexei step out of the bathroom in his old Red Guardian outfit.

"What in the-" Becca mutters in disbelief.

"Still fits." Alexei states with a smirk as he leans against the wall with his arm. A wolf whistle from Melina makes the three girls groan. The mother figure claps for Alexei and Yelena turns back around in her chair.

"Oh my gosh.." the blonde grumbles.

"I never washed it once." Melina comments with a wide smile. "Come and drink."

Alexei removes his helmet as he takes his seat at the head of the table. "встаньте, делатели спасения.." Rise, workers of salvation. Alexei murmurs before humming his anthem tune and then looks at the four women before him. "Family.... back together again." Alexei says with a smile.

"Seeing as family construct was just a calculated ruse that only lasted three years, i don't think we can use this... this term anymore, can we?" Melina rattles off as she and Alexei make themselves plates of food.

Becca stares at her glass of vodka Melina had poured for her. Untouched as she had never drunk alcohol before other than the night at the party where she had taken a sip of her Uncle Thor's Asgardian mead that had been aged for a thousand years. The words of Melina settling in her mind. That her family of three years was not only a lie, but something they couldn't even use anymore to call each other.

"Agreed. So, here's what's going to happen-" Natasha begins.

"Okay. A reunion then, huh?" Alexei groans as he reach in front of Natasha and Melina to grab something for his plate. "And uh... I want to say something right off the bat." He says and then looks at Melina, "You haven't aged a day, huh? You're just as beautiful and as supple as the say they staged our marriage." Alexei states to Melina. Yelena cringes at Alexei's words, taking her shot and drinking it quickly.

"You got fat... but still good." Melina replies to Alexei. The Red Guardian chuckles with a smirk at the woman he loved and admired.

"I just got out of prison.... I, uh..." Alexei mutters, "I have lots of energy..." He whispers to Melina.

"Oh!" Melina says with raised eyebrows.

"Please- please don't do that." Natasha mutters as if she's a child watching her parents flirt. Becca wasn't used to it either, not having been around her parents long enough to see it possibly happen. When Natasha regains her composure, she looks back at the four of them. "So, here's what's gonna happen-"

"Natasha, don't slouch." Melina comments.

"Wh- I'm not slouching.." Natasha says defensively.

"Yes. Yes, you are." Melina retorts.

"I don't slouch."

"You're gonna get a back hunch." Melina continues and Alexei leans over to Natasha to help her sit upright.

"Hmm? Listen to your mother." Alexei states.

"Oh, my gosh, this..." Natasha starts.

"Up. Up." Alexei continues.

"Alright. Enough. All of you." Natasha snaps.

Yelena looks at them confused. "I didn't say anything. That's not fair." She mutters.

"Here's what's gonna happen-"

"I don't want any food.." Yelena mumbles but Melina puts food on her plate. The rambling continue around the table, the arguing in a loving way. And all Becca can do is watch. Watch how a family acts with each other. The bickering.

"You need to tell us the location of the Red Room." Natasha snaps at Melina, tired of the bickering around the table and finally getting to the point of why they're there in the first place.

Melina sniffles and nods slowly, glancing at Alexei for a moment. "You know... it's like when you told them that they could stay up late to catch Santa Claus." Melina says to Alexei.

"What? That was fun. You know... he come down the chimney, girls. Look out. Where is he? You wait for him and then when the cookies are gone, then you see he's there." Alexei retorts back, defending himself. "No, no. What? I want them- I want them to follow their dreams."

"No good." Melina counters.

"Reach for the stars, girls." Alexei says with a small smile to the girls.

"Finding Dreykov is not a fantasy. It's unfinished business." Natasha states to Melina.

But Melina shakes her head, "You can't defeat a man who commands the very will of others." She states, "You never saw the culmination of what we started in America. Nor did you." Melina says, looking at Alexei for the last part as she stands from the table.

Becca hesitates, watching Melina, "Commands the will of others?" She asks in disbelief. "Like... Sinclair...?"

Melina turns to look at Becca, with a small nod, Becca understood what that meant for her. Sinclair was much more involved in the Red Room than she had initially thought. What she knew was only the beginning.
