Chapter 19

The walls of Taehyung’s office felt suffocating, pressing in as if they too carried the weight of the truth he had to deliver. The overhead lights cast a cold glow over the room, their sterile brightness doing nothing to soften the tension crackling between the four people seated inside.

Saga sat stiffly between Jimin and Jungkook, her fingers tracing absent-minded circles on the soft fabric of her sweater. Her mind was already battling a gnawing sense of unease—why did Taehyung call her here like this? Why did Vianna look like she was struggling to keep her own emotions at bay?

Across from her, Taehyung sat behind his desk, his hands gripping a medical file so tightly that his knuckles turned pale. His usually warm eyes—ones that had reassured her countless times in the past—were clouded with something unreadable. Vianna stood beside him, arms crossed tightly, her whole body unnaturally still.

For a long moment, no one spoke. The silence was thick, suffocating, until Vianna finally placed a gentle yet firm hand on Taehyung’s shoulder, as if silently urging him forward.

“Tae… just say it.” Her voice was soft, but it carried the weight of the inevitable.

Taehyung closed the file slowly, the sound deafening in the quiet room. His throat bobbed as he swallowed hard, forcing himself to look directly at Saga.

“The tests confirmed it,” he said at last, his voice tight and heavy with restraint. “You have mid-onset Alzheimer’s.”

The words struck the air like a fatal blow, sucking the oxygen from the room.

Saga blinked, the words refusing to register in her brain. "No…" she whispered, shaking her head. "That… that doesn’t make sense." Her voice wavered. "I-I’m too young for this."

Jimin’s hand found hers, squeezing tightly, his grip the only anchor keeping her from spiraling into the abyss of shock. "Saga…" His voice was barely above a whisper, pained and helpless.

Across from them, Jungkook shot up from his seat so suddenly that his chair toppled backward, hitting the floor with a loud thud. His chest rose and fell rapidly as his eyes darted between Taehyung and Vianna, desperate, pleading for them to deny it.

"No! This can’t be right!" he burst out, his voice raw, cracking under the weight of his emotions. His wide, disbelieving eyes burned into Taehyung. "You’re saying my Sparkle—" He stopped himself, unable to finish the sentence. He clenched his jaw, his hands curling into tight fists.

Vianna’s voice was eerily calm. "Kook, sit down."

Jungkook turned sharply to her, his eyes ablaze. "Don’t tell me to sit down when he’s saying she’s—" He stopped, biting the inside of his cheek so hard it nearly bled. His fists trembled at his sides, his entire body shaking with barely restrained emotion.

Saga remained frozen, her hands now visibly trembling as she turned to Taehyung, desperation coloring her expression. "Tae, there’s been a mistake, right?"

Taehyung’s chest ached at the way she looked at him—like a lost child clinging to hope. He had seen her in pain before, but nothing like this.

"I wish I could tell you that, Sisi," he said softly, leaning forward. "But Saga, we ran every possible test. The scans don’t lie."

She let out a breathless laugh, but there was no humor in it—only disbelief. "Alzheimer’s," she murmured, the word foreign and cruel on her tongue. "Like… like the kind where people forget their own families?"

Jimin, still holding onto her hand as if she might disappear, nodded firmly. "We’re not letting it get to that point."

Saga pressed her hands to her temples, squeezing her eyes shut. "This isn’t happening," she whispered, shaking her head furiously. "This isn’t happening."

Vianna stepped forward and pulled her into a hug, the weight of her own unshed tears slipping down her cheeks. "We’re going to fight this. You’re not alone, Saga. We’re here."

Jungkook fell to his knees in front of her, his large hands trembling as he grasped hers tightly. His eyes searched hers frantically, his breath coming in uneven gasps. "I won’t let this take you away from me," he whispered, his voice breaking on the last word.

Taehyung swallowed the lump in his throat and reached over to smooth Saga’s hair like he always did when she was younger, as if the simple gesture could protect her from the reality closing in around them. "You’re my sister, Saga. I promised to protect you. And I will."

But deep down, he knew. This was a battle even he wasn’t sure he could win.

A heavy silence hung over the room, each of them lost in their own storm of emotions. But Jungkook, still crouched before Saga, suddenly lifted his head, his expression shifting from devastation to sharp confusion.

"Why?" he demanded. His voice wasn’t just angry—it was desperate. "Why is this happening to her?" His gaze snapped to Taehyung. "Alzheimer’s is a disease of old people, isn’t it? Then why her?"

Vianna flinched, looking away.

Taehyung’s head dipped slightly, his lips pressing into a thin line. He looked… defeated.

Jungkook’s eyes darkened, his jaw clenching. He surged to his feet, fists tightening. "What. Happened?" His voice was dangerously low.

Saga’s breathing hitched. Her fingers curled into the fabric of her sweater.

Something about the way Vianna refused to meet their eyes… the way Taehyung looked as though he was carrying a burden too heavy to bear…

The answer came to her like a slow-moving storm, creeping in through the cracks of her memory.

Her voice was barely above a whisper, but it was enough to make the room freeze.

"...Was it the accident?"

Taehyung stilled. Vianna’s grip on her arms tightened.

Jungkook’s breath hitched, his gaze snapping to Taehyung. Jimin stiffened beside her, his fingers tightening around hers.

The silence that followed was unbearable.

Saga swallowed hard, her pulse hammering in her ears.

And in that moment, she realized—she might not want to hear the answer.
