Puzzle 8
Min Yoongi was not having it. Just when he thought that they were called to see the team doctor for an urgent matter, it was all a ruse. They just wanted the professor with them before they decided to kick him out of the room since he kept on interfering with their conversation.
Now he’s outside the room where they handle autopsies and has been angrily pacing back and forth as his colleagues are buttering up the professor, especially Jin. That man would never shut up when it came to women. He thinks that he’s the most good-looking of all of them.
“Let’s see if you’re still good-looking when I leave a huge purple bruise on your nose,” the lieutenant grumbles under his breath, kicking at nothing on the ground. The action was merely done out of frustration.
It’s not that he’s mad that the guys are smooth-talking Seungwan. Okay, maybe he is mad at that, but it’s mainly because of the fact that they waste time doing that. Seungwan can talk to any guy she wants as he does not care about whoever talks to her. Like as if he cares that Hoseok is the person she mostly talks to at the office. Like as if he cares that Jimin took her home that one night when they had their first major argument. Like as if he cares that Jin might be charming her at this exact moment and she might agree to go out to dinner with him-
Yoongi had to stop to hit himself on the head. What in the world was I thinking about?! He couldn’t stop internally berating himself. He’s not jealous, he’s just level-headed. He knows that he has to be professional when it comes to his job and the people he expects to work with.
“Yooni?”
But he is not going to lie with this. The voice of that woman is starting to cause a certain flutter in his heart.
He turns to see Seungwan standing all alone behind him, throwing him a look of concern.
“Oh,” he mutters. “They finally let you out?”
“Yeah, the guys thought that they were holding me back from my job with you.”
He mutters under his breath, “They sure were.” Her hand suddenly rests on his arm and as he looks to the side, his gaze meets Seungwan's eyes. And the way she peers at him with those doe eyes is beginning to make him weak to the knees. What is going wrong with him? Is the ever-so-stoic Lieutenant Min Yoongi going soft for a woman?
“Is something wrong?” she asks softly, still looking closely at him with eyes laced with worry, “You look very bothered, Yooni.”
Damn it. Again, with the nickname. “I-I’m fine.” He brushes her off and scoffs, “Come on, let’s get back to work.” What kind of effect is she leaving on him? Is this because of the fact that he has not been around a lot of women for the past years unless they were dead? And now that he is constantly around one, he thinks that she’s very attractive?
As they head to the parking lot and finally to the lieutenant’s car, Yoongi just couldn’t seem to hold it in when Seungwan comments, “Doctor Jin seems like a very nice man. He was nothing but kind to me when we discussed the problem at hand-”
“Were you aware of what he was trying to do?”
Seungwan cocks her head, confused with the question. “Yooni, he was simply being nice,” She explains before getting in the front seat of the car.
Yoongi throws her a look of bewilderment just as he slides in the driver’s seat. “He was hitting on you!” he pointed out loudly.
“W-What?” Seungwan sputters, then shakes her head vehemently. “No way.”
“No way?” Yoongi repeats in absolute disbelief. “So you think that Jin was talking to you like how he would talk to the rest of us? Wendy, come on, I know you’re not fucking stupid. You can tell when a guy is hitting on you or not.”
Seungwan is stunned. She did not know that that was the doctor’s intention at all. How could she have been this blind? Is this because she’s been with Sungjoon all this time? But thinking hard about it, Sungjoon would not be considered her boyfriend or anything of that sort. Sure, they may have fooled around at times, but he has never taken her out on a date, and, to her biggest frustration, he has never kissed her. “Well, I don’t have to worry about the doctor,” she declares nonchalantly.
“And why’s that?”
“I already have someone.”
Yoongi chortles. “Yeah, right.”
"No, no," She argues, "I'm serious."
The sincerity of her voice makes him do a double-take. He gives her a once-over and utters playfully, “You’re pulling my leg. Stop lying.”
"Yooni, I never lie."
He scoffs, "You? Really?" He rolls his eyes, much to Seungwan's dismay. "A woman like you? Now you're really pulling my leg."
"A woman like me?" Seungwan spits out, completely appalled with that ridiculous comment. "Are you saying that a woman like me can't find someone to be in a relationship with?"
"Does that guy take you out on dates, then?"
Sungjoon has never taken her out. "N-No…"
"What kind of boyfriend does not take his girl out on dates?! Don't tell me he does not hold your hand."
And he has never held her hand in any way. Seungwan counters, "I don’t consider him as my boyfriend."
"Wow," Yoongi murmurs sarcastically, "so this is what they now mean by having 'someone'. Glad to know that."
"How dare you!" Seungwan suddenly seethes out exasperatedly. This causes Yoongi to jump slightly out of shock in his seat. "That's so stuck-up of you to say! Thinking that you have the right to even attack my personal life?!" She crosses her arms and shakes her head as she faces the other way, completely livid. "You would always find a way to bring me down with your words. We keep on fighting and making up and fighting again! I’m growing impatient with you! Fuck it," she curses and opens the car door to head out. "I’m walking," she declares angrily with much conviction.
"Wen?!" Yoongi exclaims, craning his neck to call her as she walks away. "Wendy!"
"Leave me alone!" She shouts back angrily before flipping him off. And this time, she does not look back.
------------
Being on a phone call with her best friend, Seulgi, has always been the kind of therapy she seeks almost every day.
For the past three days, though, Seungwan has been needing someone to talk to since she hasn't spoken with her partner.
Yes, she and Lieutenant Min Yoongi have not uttered a word to each other for the past three days.
She would talk with the rest of the guys like usual. But when the lieutenant is around, she would shut her mouth. When Yoongi has something to say to her, he has to tell one of the guys to inform Seungwan even if she's there in the same room.
It is petty, really. Seungwan knows that and she’s been sniffing from her Tiger Balm more than usual. Yet, she is not going to let him have his way again and again. She has been patient with him for all these weeks and perhaps she has reached her breaking point. What she may have with Sungjoon could be considered unconventional, but what gives Yoongi the right to say anything about it?
"What a blessing to know that you're calling me, unnie."
"Seulgi-ah!" Seungwan exclaims out of relief just as her best friend answers her call. "I'm glad to hear from you, too."
"I swear. Hearing your voice helps me stay sane." Seungwan hears as she holds the phone close to her ear. She's currently pacing back and forth slowly in the back area of the precinct. "Being in the hospital 24/7 really does take a toll on you."
"I might just be your next patient there," Seungwan informs her, chuckling wryly. "Min Yoongi is driving me insane."
"The cute lieutenant? What's going on? Based on that tension you two clearly had for each other weeks ago, I thought you would be banging each other by now."
"Seulgi-ah!!" Seungwan berates her best friend over the phone. Upon noticing how much her voice has risen, she clears her throat and continues in a hiss, "No, we are not doing anything about that matter. That's disgusting."
"That's only your opinion."
"Oh, shut up." Seungwan rolls her eyes.
"I swear. Listen to me. The lieutenant even sounds better than that guy you shared with me which, by the way, I have not met yet. What's his name again? Seonjun? Sungho?"
"Sungjoon, Seulgi," She grumbles, "Sungjoon."
"See? He's that unimportant to me."
"Seulgi-ah-"
"I bet he's not even good in bed."
Seungwan chokes on her own words at that. "I-I, W-Wha-" she sputters before finally gaining her voice back, "Why is everything about sex for you?! We never slept together!"
"I'm simply spitting out facts!"
Seungwan growls under her breath, berating her best friend, "Seulgi-ah."
"Whatever. I've said my case, it's up to you now if you take it or not. Just a gentle reminder for you, remember that you are not one to settle for someone that does not treat you right."
"Thanks for the reminder, Seul…" Seungwan utters instead of scolding Seulgi all the more. "And a reminder from me, stop being so thirsty."
Seulgi laughs hard over the phone and Seungwan imagines her throwing her head back. "That's the thing, unnie! I may be shy, but I know what I want." Just as Seungwan was about to reply, she heard two voices in the background and Seulgi answering them with an authoritative voice. Judging by that, she knows that it's time to end the conversation. “Darn. I have to go. Apparently, something is happening in one of the therapy sessions. The nurses want me to check it out to be sure.”
“I know you have to go now,” Seungwan utters softly, hugging a free arm around herself.
“I’m really sorry, unnie. I promise that we’ll finally have that date for the two of us. We’ll finally eat together at a buffet and stay there until it closes!”
Seungwan giggles. “Yes, yes,” she assures her best friend with a grin on her face. “Go now, I’m sure they’re waiting for you outside. Bye, Seulgi-ah”
“Yes, I will. I’ll see you soon, okay? Also, try to be a bit more patient with the cute lieutenant. I know he’s a pain in the ass, but I know that you are one of the most understanding people out there. He may need you more than what you’re aware of. Bye!” She ended the call before Seungwan could say anything more. Though, there was really no need to add anything else.
Seungwan heaves out a long and heavy sigh as she lets her hand, holding the phone, drop to her side. She knows that she can handle the lieutenant. In fact, she can handle anyone. But it gets tiring at times to always act like the bigger person. She is still human after all.
As she walks back inside the precinct, it’s Detective Kim who she sees first, standing by her desk. She slows in her step and raises an eyebrow at him as she curiously asks, “Yes, Taehyung? Is something wrong?”
He purses his lips and shakes his head, standing in attention with his hands hiding behind his back. “Nothing wrong, Seungwan-shi.”
“Then why are you standing by my desk?” She takes another step forward, giving him a once-over with an eyebrow still quirked upward.
“Oh!” Taehyung exclaims exaggeratingly and even slaps a hand over his face, “I completely forgot!” He pulls his hand away and looks straight into her eyes. “I actually need your help at one of the interrogation rooms. Well, to be exact, the rest of the guys need your help. I’m here to bring you there.”
“Why do you need me? You have Mister Min who could do a better job than me-”
“That’s the thing...he’s already there,” he interrupts her gently. “We’re all merely waiting for you.”
“Taehyung, this better not be a prank.”
He raises his hands at her then places one over his heart. “I swear that this is not a prank. You have my word."
Seungwan stays silent for a while, thinking about the man's word and his true or hidden intentions, before finally relenting. "Fine," she mutters. "Lead me there."
A smile threatens to form on his face, but Taehyung forces out a cough instead as he makes sure that the woman follows him as they walk through the corridor leading to the door of the nearest interrogation room. Taehyung pushes open the door and as Seungwan enters the room, two pairs of hands grab her arms. In a rush, they drag her to the other part of the room, separated by a door, and she cannot wrap her head around what is going on. But as the door slams closed behind her, that is when Seungwan notices the table set in front of her with different dishes of food aligned on it, two sets of tableware and cutlery are fixed in a neat manner, and a scowling Lieutenant Min Yoongi is seated at the chair across from the empty one. Clearly, that one is for her and she is not happy about it.
Without a word, she turns and wraps a hand around the doorknob to try and pull the door open, but it wouldn’t budge. She continues to struggle, even shaking the door to see if its lock would come loose. “Come on, come on,” she mutters through gritted teeth, “Get me out of here.”
“I’ve tried that already,” the voice behind her utters lazily and Seungwan huffs as a reply, turning around to fire back at him, “I don’t want to deal with you at all!”
“Do I look like I want this?” Yoongi spits out, crossing his arms. “You’re lucky that you were not handcuffed when you were brought here.”
“Whether that happened to me or not, I don’t care. I don’t care about you and anything that concerns you!” She snarls at him, quickly pacing back and forth in a small space of the room which she now has deemed hers. She wraps her arms around herself and breathes heavily as she continues her pacing. The erratic manner of her breathing catches Yoongi’s attention almost immediately.
“Wen,” he starts, “can you at least try to calm down? You clearly don’t have your Tiger Balm with you so there is nothing else that could make you calm down fast unless you try on your own.”
“How could I calm down?! I’m forced to be stuck in a small space with...with you!”
“Hey! I-”
“Would you two just quit it?!” Over the intercom, Jimin’s loud voice interjects harshly, making both Seungwan and Yoongi look up at the speaker on the ceiling out of instinct. “Do you know what Hoseok and Jungkook are doing?” He continues, “They’re on their own doing your job since you two are not doing anything! We are tired of you treating each other indifferently, so we set up this dinner so that you could talk and work together again! So Suga, shut up and treat the woman right. Seungwan, try to have a little more patience and sit at the table already.”
All the words the two wanted to continue to throw toward each other suddenly died down in their throats. Yoongi squeezes his eyes shut and gingerly rubs a hand on his forehead. “Wen, at least take your seat now.”
Seungwan sighs heavily and wordlessly gets to her seat, plopping down on it as she avoids eye contact with him. Yoongi opens his eyes to see how tense the woman looks as she averts her gaze from his and clenches her jaw. He throws a hand out, gesturing at the food. “Help yourself,” he murmurs.
Instead of reaching over for any of the dishes, Seungwan makes sure to grab the open bottle of wine standing by the middle of the table and almost fills her empty glass with it. Yoongi watches her with wide eyes.
“Are you fucking crazy? Are you trying to get yourself drunk so fast?”
Seungwan scowls at him and brings the full glass to her lips before downing at most half of the glass. Placing it back on the table, she counters, “Why are you so curious? You think a woman like me wouldn’t do something like this?" She emphasizes her words, spitting them out sharply, before grabbing her glass again to finish her current serving of wine until its last drop.
“Wen-”
“Maybe I should let you sleep with me to change your perception of who I am as a person?” She continues to rile him up as she refills her glass. Yoongi reaches over to take the bottle of wine from her hold, but she’s quicker to move it farther away from him.
“Wendy-”
“Will that make you happier, Mister Min?” She rhetorically asks before drinking more than half of her serving of wine.
“I swear to God, if you continue to make yourself drunk, there will be no way for me to take you back to your condo unit.”
“Then how about you take me back to your place, huh? Then you can have your way with me, hotshot!” She exclaims, instantly feeling the buzz and sloppiness brought by the amount of alcohol the wine has as they spread through her body and senses. She hiccups then giggles out of the blue, finishing her second serving of wine.
Yoongi then gets on his feet. “Wendy, please, you need to stop-”
But it seemed to have been too late for anything the moment Seungwan brought the opening of the wine bottle to her lips and chugs it with no absolute feeling of remorse.
