Puzzle 7
"You're crazy," Lieutenant Min utters just as he turns left on the steering wheel to get the car on the skyway, "you know that, right?"
Seungwan could only let out a huff and face at what is outside the car window from where she is seated.
"And you have the tendency to zone out at times," he continues despite the woman's silence.
"Does it bother you, Yooni?" She asks, albeit raising her voice.
"No," he replies surprisingly in a calm manner and admits, "It actually worries me."
The team has dispersed to do their tasks by partners. One will visit the team's resident doctor, Doctor Kim Seokjin. Another pair will trace the whereabouts of the victim, Byun Soo-ah, leading to her death. And this pair, the bickering pair, is assigned to check the local radio stations, following the idea of the brat which Min Yoongi finds very dangerous.
The woman rolls her eyes. "I don't want you to worry over me."
"You know that I can't help it because you create these idiotic ideas in your head that make you crazy," Yoongi retaliates, starting to become impatient.
"Like what?" Seungwan spits out.
Fine, if she wants to fight like this then I'll make sure that she gathers a piece of my mind, Yoongi thought as the car skids right to stop at a lay-by. "Like the fact that you want to lure the killer by manipulating the music the radio stations will play!" He bursts out, furiously.
"And I never said anything like that."
"Do I look like I'm stupid? I'm your partner!" He points out in exasperation. "By now, I know how you think especially with that hero complex of yours which was clearly displayed back when we handled the arson case."
"Oh," Seungwan drawls in a taunting manner, crossing her arms. "So, as partners, you're meaning to say that we shouldn't keep anything from each other?"
"Exactly my point!"
"Then why did you not tell me anything about your sister?" She snaps.
In an instant, Yoongi's blood turns cold. His heart starts to hammer in his chest out of nervousness, anger, fear, that his partner knows about his noona.
"H-How did you hear about my sister?" He utters, breathlessly.
"That doesn't matter," Seungwan states. "What matters is that out of all the thousand Min's out there...you had to be a direct relative of Min Sun-Ja." The woman furrows her brows and whispers, "Why did you not tell me?"
"Would it have made a difference if I told you?"
"I would have tried to understand you more-"
"So you think that I'm the type of person to tell you about my sister's death to garner your understanding and pity?" He spits out, growing annoyed.
"Yooni," Seungwan placates, "that was not my intention-"
"Well, it sounded like it was," He interjects, huffing and gritting his teeth to look straight ahead again.
Seungwan looks down at her hands resting on her lap. She is also fuming with anger. How dare he go against what she plans to do! She knows that she's doing something dangerous, but what isn’t especially in their line of work? The least he could do is to trust her and she knows that Yooni does not yet.
And with how he is reacting now, perhaps trust is out of the line.
He lets out a sigh in resignation. "Tell me now," he suddenly utters. Seungwan looks up at him. His hands stay folded in front of him while looking at the distance. "Tell me everything that you know about her and me."
The woman takes in a deep breath then exhales. "Honestly, not much,” she confesses. “I want to know more from you."
He clicks his tongue then scoffs, "Just when I was starting to warm up to your personality, you ruined all chances of it. You really know how to pry into other people's lives," he finishes in a mutter. Yoongi chuckles ruefully then shrugs in defeat. “Go on. Ask me anything now while I’m still vulnerable.”
"...Why was a family picture there?” Seungwan asks softly, making sure that she stays calm and not let her anger get the best of her. “Obituaries usually do not have pictures of the dead's family on them." The picture is still vivid in her mind, the picture of four people that resembled a family, a happy one. Blissful smiles graced their features and the way they held each other closely for the photo was enough for one to say that they loved each other. Who would have thought that tragedy would strike such a family?
Yoongi purses his lips and throws a glance at the woman beside him. “Umma wanted it,” he whispers after a while of silence. “She wanted to let people know that her daughter, my noona, is someone more than a victim of a bastard serial killer. Noona is more than that. All those women are more than that.” He clears his throat as his voice hitches, then he turns to gaze into Seungwan’s eyes. “Was it wrong for us to place a picture there, Wen?”
She immediately shakes her head. “No, it wasn’t wrong,” she reassures him, her heart aching for the man who is clearly trying to hold himself up. “I-I’m sorry for asking, I just wanted to-”
“Now don’t go on feeling pity for me,” Yoongi interrupts the woman with a scoff. “I merely asked for your opinion, but don’t give me those sad eyes that you always pull off.”
And this guy is back to being a douchebag. Seungwan rolls her eyes. “I was being nice and giving you a listening ear, Yooni. In fact, I was empathetic,” she points out.
“Nah,” the man shakes his head in discontent, “you were just sympathetic.”
The woman gapes at him. “What? No way!”
Yoongi smirks then shrugs his shoulders again. “Okay,” he drawls, continuing to tease the woman.
“Hey!” Seungwan slaps his arm. “I was really just being nice!”
And for the first time today, Yoongi chuckles lightly. “I knew that.”
“Then why were you-”
“I wanted to mess with you,” He cuts her off, smiling softly. “I know that you’re always nice. Aside from that, you’re also so gullible,” he finishes, articulating the word ‘gullible’. Suddenly, his phone starts to ring from the compartment beside his stick shift. He takes it and immediately answers the call with placing the phone against his ear. “Lieutenant Min,” he states out loud, turning serious again.
Seungwan watches the smile disappear on his face and she also forces herself to get serious.
“Okay,” Yoongi continues, nodding slowly. “Got it. We’ll be there in a few minutes.” Then he ends the call before placing his phone back in its original compartment.
“Who was that?”
“Taehyung,” He huffs and gets the car going again. “They need your help, so we are heading to our resident doctor. I’ll introduce you to him when we get there.”
Seungwan nods in assent then sits straight in her seat. “I know what you did,” she utters as Yoongi brings the car back on the skyway.
“Hm? What did I do?”
“You did not want to be on the hot seat,” she replies. “Still,” Seungwan then breaks off into a smile, “thank you for telling me even if it was only for a short time. I promise I won’t keep anything from you as a payment.”
“Shut up and stop being mushy, Wen.”
------------
“There are no signs of forced entry just like the other victims. Could the suspect really be a man?”
Doctor Seokjin cuts to the chase as Yoongi enters the morgue first with Seungwan following behind. Apparently, the doctor has not noticed the woman yet.
“Of course, we can’t say that the suspect is a man without the right evidence to support it,” Yoongi huffs, stepping closer to the cold body of Byun Soo-ah lying on the metal bed.
“Well, I’m sure internally, you think differently.”
Detective Kim and Officer Jeon stand by the side of the room and Seungwan moves to stand beside them as the three watch the tall doctor and the lieutenant discuss among themselves.
This room in the morgue is not that wide. Metal shelves line the walls with different medical instruments lying on their different compartments. The naked body of the victim is covered with a thin white sheet and Seungwan does not like looking at it, but the men in the room seem unbothered with it. This is like a walk in the park for them. For the woman, it was a whole new battlefield.
“Glad that you’re here, Seungwan-shi,” Taehyung whispers, bending a bit to the side to almost be at the same level as the woman. “Jungkook and I were actually expecting you to do most of the talking, but your asshole of a partner really does love the attention.”
Jungkook snickers from beside Taehyung and Seungwan could only chuckle softly. “Let the man do his work.” She nudges him with her elbow. “You should have also not called us, then, from the very beginning. Mister Min told me that you needed my help.”
“Oh,” Jungkook chimes in, “it was actually an excuse to take you here. If you are to be part of the group, then you need to meet our resident doctor as well.”
Seungwan grows puzzled. “So,” she drawls, “I don’t need to be here?”
“Oh, no no. You should be here,” Taehyung clarifies. “Suga should have taken you here ages ago, but he’s just really being stupid now.”
“Oh!” A loud voice from the other side of the room catches the attention of the three people standing at the side. Seungwan whips her head to find that the doctor is now looking straight at her with a stunned look on his face. “I was not aware that we had a visitor!” The doctor saunters over to her but pauses in step to punch the arm of the lieutenant beside him. “Why did you not tell me that we have a lovely woman with us?”
Yoongi only clicks his tongue and rolls his eyes in annoyance, also rubbing the part on his arm where the doctor punched him. “You were going to know eventually…” he grumbles.
The tall man’s words make Seungwan turn shy and she could feel her cheeks starting to blush. Perhaps she may have gone beet red when the doctor stops right in front of her with a smile that reaches his eyes. “Hi, I am Doctor Kim Seokjin,” he introduces himself, bringing out a hand for the woman to take.
Seungwan does take it and gives it a firm shake. “I am Professor Son Seungwan. It’s a pleasure to meet you, Doctor Kim.”
The doctor lets out a laugh and gently removes his hand from their hold. “You can call me Jin. And Seungwan? That’s a fitting name for a pretty woman.”
“Jin,” Yoongi suddenly spits out from the side as a warning. Taehyung and Jungkook throw knowing glances at each other, but the others do not notice it.
“Lighten up, Suga!” Doctor Seokjin exclaims. “It’s not every day I see an alive woman in a morgue.” He instantly turns to look back at Seungwan, “I hope that did not offend you.”
“Not at all,” she says back. “I, uh, I can actually leave if I’m not needed here-”
“Oh, we need you!” Doctor Seokjin cuts her off, reaching out to hold her arm to take her with him closer to the body on the metal bed. Yoongi could only groan with the doctor’s sudden action. “You’re a professor, right?” the doctor asks, “What do you teach at the university?”
“Criminal psychology,” Seungwan replies, turning a bit wary since the distance between her and the dead body is growing closer. Too close for her own liking.
“Hm,” Doctor Seokjin hums. “It’s no surprise as to why you’re part of the team now. I even think that we don’t need these three other guys with us to solve the case.”
“Hey!” Both Taehyung and Jungkook cry from the side.
“Boo-hoo, you two can cry all you want. I’ll even try to give a damn,” the doctor spits out, craning his neck to gaze at the two men behind Seungwan. He clears his throat after, turning all serious like how he was when Seungwan first entered the room. “It’s great that you’re here because being a professor,” he tells her, “you are an expert in the motives, the behavior, of these suspects. To be frank, we’ve all been in a slump. Perhaps, you could give us a new perspective on this. Where else must we look at the problem at hand?”
"And you need me to look at the body then, if ever?"
Doctor Seokjin nods. "Precisely. It could give you a clue, something that we might have missed."
Yoongi then walks up beside her to confront the doctor. “I’m not going to allow her to see the body, Jin.”
“Mister Min!” Seungwan exclaims, her feeling of nervousness starting to be overcome with one of disbelief. “You need my help. Of course, I would need to see the body up close then.”
“I am still not allowing that, Wen.”
“Wen?” the doctor utters in confusion, furrowing his eyebrows, and looks back at the two men standing behind for an answer.
Taehyung then whispers loudly, “Long story.”
Yoongi and Seungwan still continue to argue. “It’s not that I doubt your capabilities,” the man continues, “You know that I’m starting to warm up to you, Wen.”
Seungwan crosses her arms in front of her and argues back, “Then you need to give me this chance! I’ll eventually get the hang of it if you give me the right to do the same things as what you do.”
“Oh, please,” Yoongi groans out loud. “Why are you so adamant about this?”
“Because Mister Min, I am officially part of your team now,” she points out, jabbing a finger at his chest. This surprises the lieutenant and even the rest of the men in the room. “Not only that, but I’m your partner,” she continues, “So whatever gruesome or cruel situation you have to go through, I must go through the same as well. You may not completely trust me now, but I will prove to you that I am worthy of it whether you like it or not.”
