Puzzle 11

The constant ringing of his doorbell rouses Yoongi from his sleep in an instant. His head flies up and he groans because of the shooting pain right at the nape of his neck. He rubs the sore spot and looks beneath him to see the mess of the documents strewn around his laptop. He fell asleep while working again.

The person on the other side of the door would not stop ringing the doorbell and he huffs under his breath before pushing himself up from his seat. “Ugh,” he groans deeply as the sharp pain of sitting on his chair for hours aches in his lower back. “I’m getting old already,” he mutters under his breath.

The sound of his doorbell would not stop and he was growing more annoyed by the second. He checks what time it is already on the wall clock hanging on top of his kitchen counter. It's around three in the morning. Who in the world would visit me at this time of the night?!

He walks towards the door and stops before it to peer through the eyehole. Gasping softly in shock to see the person constantly ringing the doorbell, he couldn’t mask his shock to find that it was Seungwan standing outside.

Without any hesitation, he unlocks the door and pulls it open. "Wen?" He utters, voice still sounding groggy, "What the fuck? What are you doing here so early?"

Seungwan replies while inviting herself in, "Hello to you, too, Yooni. I have no time to waste so I have to make this quick."

Yoongi could only stare at the woman who has now made herself busy by going through his notes messily spread throughout his kitchen table. His still-sleepy mind cannot wrap around the energetic presence that has now entered his place. One thing he can't seem to understand is how Seungwan managed to enter his building. "Wait, wait, can you slow down a bit for a sec?" He walks toward where she is and stops her from moving by holding her shoulder. "How in the world did the doorman allow you in?"

"Simple. I told him I was your girlfriend."

Yoongi's eyes instantly widened. "Wendy?!" He sputters incredulously. "Why would you say that?!"

"Oh, don't overreact! There are more important things we must be dealing with at this moment."

The man pinches the bridge of his nose in an attempt to tame his frustration and annoyance towards this woman who can't seem to get the hint. From all things she had to say, she said that she's his girlfriend?! He drops his hand to his side and exhales heavily before continuing in a calmer voice, "Okay, fine. Since you told me not to overreact, I won't do it. But you need to tell me why you couldn't have waited until the sun had gone up!"

"I can't waste any more time." Seungwan waves out of derision at him and takes a seat at the kitchen table. She then pauses, as realization dawns on her, to really take a look at him. "Did you fall asleep? I thought you would still be awake by this time."

"I fell asleep while working. But don't change the subject, Miss Son," Yoongi continued in a stern manner, "I want you to also tell me who took you here."

"I took a taxi," she simply replied.

"Taxi?" He exclaims and all of a sudden sits across from her before throwing his hands into the air. "Jesus Christ, Wen, you can't go around at this time of the night taking a taxi as your life depended on it. It's not safe!"

"We're partners!" She argues, "We made a pinky promise! I'm going to give my all to solve this case." Then she crosses her arms before her. "And why do you suddenly care?" Seungwan asks in a pointed tone.

Her last statement catches Yoongi completely off guard. In fact, it renders him speechless for a short moment. His face twitches, forming a frown, and he looks away as he grumbles, “Whatever." Following Seungwan, he also crosses his arms. "As you said, we're partners. Now cut to the chase. Why are you here?"

"Well, I came from a lecture with my students this evening."

"Which happened hours ago," Yoongi emphasizes, earning a glare from the woman across. "Fine." He bites back his tongue. "Continue."

"I couldn't fall asleep because one of my students mentioned something about copycat killers. I'm sure you've heard of that term before."

"Of course. There were some people who liked to copy the MO's of Jack the Ripper, the Zodiac killer, etc." Yoongi curls an inquisitive eyebrow up while uncrossing his arms to lean them forward on the table. "Wen, where are you going with this?"

"It got me thinking, what if," she begins, "there is someone else other than Ryon In-Su?"

"Are you deducing this based on the various MOs we've been encountering?"

"Exactly!" She exclaims. "It's highly probable that he is not alone."

"Wait, wait." Yoongi shakes his head, as if trying to clear his mind in some way for this piece of information is not only new to him but also extraordinarily relevant. This could change the course of their investigation. He first rubs his eyebrows with his pinky then asks, "So you're saying that Ryon In-Su could have an accomplice? Or someone that's following him? Wendy, that's going to be-"

"I know," she cuts him off. Her mood then turns sullen. "It's a huge leap from where we are with our ongoing investigation. It's a huge risk, Yooni."

"Well…" He drops his hand and smirks at her, "I find it a risk I'm willing to take with a partner like you."

------------

"Okay, so the first thing on our agenda is to visit the radio station again. We need to take note of not only the playlists but the exact times they were played."

As Yoongi and Seungwan get out of the car, it is the woman who instantly takes the lead. She struts her way to the entrance of Heart FM Radio Station without even sparing a glance toward Yoongi who was trying to catch up to her.

"Yah, wait up!" He jogs to finally be beside her as they walk inside the radio station together. "Are the DJs aware that we're visiting today?"

"No," Seungwan replies curtly.

"What? Woah, woah, woah!" He stops her from going any further. "What do you mean 'no'? You did not ask permission if we could come here again?"

"Yooni, don't worry about this," She reassures him. "I'm sure the radio DJ for today won't mind."

"Wendy, how sure are you?"

She then winks and points a finger gun at him. "Because I played as Cupid."

Yoongi was dumbfounded by that unexpected answer. "C-Cupid? What the hell do you mean by that?!"

“You’ll see in a moment.”

He decides to shut his mouth and follow her inside the station to one of the rooms where there is a live session ongoing.

Seungwan doesn’t falter even when she holds onto the doorknob and twists it to open the door.

“--have a song request from Jada. She says that she’s a frequent listener of this radio station especially when it comes to this segment!” The radio DJ speaks into the microphone, “I know you can’t see this, Jada, but I’m forming a heart for you with my hands.” She forms a heart and smiles widely before she continues, “As per your request, here is a new song released by a new artist who seems very promising and I am an absolute fan of this song, as well! Ladies and gentlemen, here is New Rules by Dua Lipa.” She then pushes a button on the machine before her and the upbeat intro of the song starts to play. The DJ takes off her headphones and hangs them on the armrest of her office chair and stands.

“Miss Yerim?” Seungwan utters and the woman turns to see two people standing by the entrance of the room.

“Professor Son!” The DJ greets her cheerfully. “I received your text, it’s great to see you here! Come in, come in!”

Seungwan loops her hand around Yoongi’s arm and she tugs him with her to walk to the workstation of Miss Yerim.

“Also,” the DJ continues, “you don’t have to call me Miss Yerim, just saying my name is more than enough. You’re even older than me.”

“Well, if that’s what you want, Yerim. Ah, this is my work partner, Lieutenant Min Yoongi.” Seungwan brings a hand out to present him to the DJ.

Yerim raises an inquisitive eyebrow towards her. “Just work partner? Based on how you’re holding onto him and how he hasn’t let go, you both seem more than partners,” she teases her.

It’s only then that Seungwan and Yoongi notice how close they’re standing beside each other and how Yoongi is even allowing Seungwan to hold him close to her. At the same time, they move a step away from each other, and Seungwan moves her arm away from his. They cough awkwardly while Seungwan fixes her hair and Yoongi rubs the nape of his neck.

Watching the two before her, Yerim breaks off into a laugh. “Professor Son, you are truly Cupid even to your own self!”

“I-It’s n-nothing, I p-promise!”

“Yeah, yeah, say all you want. I’ll try to believe you.” Yerim then walks back to her chair when the second song in the prepared playlist begins. “Anyway, your text said that you needed a favor from me. What do you need help with?”

Yoongi decides to answer this question, “We need help with obtaining your playlist records from 13 years ago. Would those still be available?”

“Woah, 13 years ago? That would be…” Yerim trails off as goes into deep thought, “well, a really long list of songs. Though, I think we still have those. The earlier ones are just not computerized so you’ll be looking into physical copies of them.”

“We won’t mind going through that,” Seungwan chimes in. “There is, though, another request we have.”

“Shoot. Just say it,” Yerim says just as she starts to fix another five songs to play after the current one.

“All the playlists in those 13 years have to be in order with their corresponding dates and times they were played in your station.”

Yerim pauses in her actions and slowly she tilts her head to show them the look of pure bewilderment plastered on her face. “W-Wow,” she stammers, “are you serious?”

“Sadly,” Seungwan admits, biting her lip nervously. “I know it’s a lot-”

“I’m shocked,” Yerim interrupts Seungwan before she can say anything more, “but it doesn’t mean that it’s impossible. We do keep a record of that as well. It’s needed because of copyright infringement issues and all that stuff. It will take a lot of work, though, but give me a week at most. Anyway, you’ve done something great for me and I’ll repay you with this.”

“Thank you very much, Yerim!”

“Wait,” Yoongi starts speaking, “the fact that you’re very open with taking this time-consuming task is making me concerned. If you won’t mind my asking, what favor did Professor Son do for you?”

Yerim suddenly starts to grow shy. She throws a glance toward Seungwan. “I-I don’t think I’ll be able to explain it to Lieutenant Min. Professor, can you do it?”

“Well,” Seungwan starts slowly and turns to face Yoongi who is looking at her, patiently waiting for her explanation. “Apparently, when I was talking with Yerim before coming here, I found out in some way that she has a crush on a certain police officer in your precinct.”

“I would see him doing his night patrols near the station so I would always see him,” Yerim confesses in a soft voice.

“Police officer?” Yoongi murmurs. “Wait,” sudden realization dawns on him, “Are you talking about Jungkook?”

Seungwan nods and Yerim blushes all the more that she can’t look at them anymore. “Yup, you’re right, Mister Min. After finding out, I may or may not have set them up for a blind date.”

His eyes widened in disbelief. The things he’s noticed in the precinct start to click and make sense now. “So you’re telling me that all those times Jungkook says he’s taking a break from work are those times when they’re flirting with each other?”

Yerim gasps, raising her head, “He takes time off to message me?” She then brings her hands to her red cheeks. “Now I really can’t wait for our date!”

—---------

“Mister Min, Mister Min!” Seungwan utters urgently, running after the man who is rushing inside their precinct. Yoongi, on the other hand, can’t hear her since he’s determined to find Officer Jeon and give him a piece of his mind.

To his convenience, he sees Officer Jeon right in the middle of the office, sitting on top of Hoseok’s desk as he speaks with Jimin and Hoseok.

“Yah! Jeon Jungkook!” He shouts and all the men turn in the direction of his voice.

“H-Hyung?” Jungkook utters warily, confused as to why Yoongi decided to shout his name out loud.

“Mister Min,” Seungwan starts again, almost running out of breath from running in heels. “Please don’t get mad at him-”

“So you’ve been flirting with someone behind my back?” Yoongi roughly grabs the collar of Jungkook and the young officer freezes in his spot. Even Hoseok and Jimin can’t seem to utter a single word.

“H-Hyung!” Jungkook stammers, “Is this about Y-Yerim? Oh, God, Professor Son only set up the blind date now, and plus…I do have a break at the end of the week,” he finishes in a small voice.

Yoongi could only roll his eyes at him.

“Hey!” Jungkook then cries out, “You said that you’ll support me whenever there’s someone for me. Why aren’t you supporting me now?”

“Yes, I did say that, but not during a time when we’re finding a serial killer! Everyone’s busy finding a criminal and you’re out there dating!” Yoongi then lets go of his collar. Seungwan then arrives to stand beside him, panting heavily from all the running.

“Hyung! At least she’s cute!” Jungkook argues.

“As punishment, you’re going to take all night shifts until the day of your date!” Yoongi points a finger at him and then turns to Seungwan to point the same finger at her. “And you should be grateful that I like you, Wendy, or else I would have given you a punishment as well.”

Seungwan almost blushed with his words. “Y-You like…me?” She coughs out.

Yoongi seems unfazed, though, and starts to angrily walk away to his office. “As a partner!” He clarifies in a shout.

Jimin and Hoseok spare a glance at each other, smirking among themselves. Jimin then leans close to Hoseok to whisper in his ear, “Definitely not as a partner.”
