Chapter XXVIII
Chapter 28. The Villainess' Life So Far
I took a moment to survey the scattered of books and papers across my desk. Presently, I found myself within the Clorance's library. Malaki at malawak ang kabuoan ng lugar na 'to. Come to think of it, mas malaki pa ang library na 'to kumpara sa library ng university namin back in the real world.
The sight of towering bookshelves, adorned with an array of books, captured my attention. From the enthralling records of the empire's history to the arcane tomes delving into magic and sorcery. The library even has a second floor, that also has a vast collection of books in-store.
As I breathed in the air, an intoxicating aroma of aged parchment and ink enveloped me, a scent that would undoubtedly enrapture any true bibliophile, a book lover.
Napahawak ako sa noo ko at saka iyon marahan na minasahe. After perusing various papers laden with geographic data and research textbooks, sa sobrang dami ng new ideas and inputs na pumapasok sa utak ko tila ay para na itong sasabog. Yet, there's nothing else better to do than to study and learn things than be oblivious to certain facts and information that could benefit me in the future. I need to make sure that I'm gonna survive once the story officially begins.
Nagpakawala ako ng isang malalim na buntong hininga. And right as I was about to reach out to my writing pen, I noticed the clock from my peripheral vision. Doon ko lamang napansin kung anong oras na pala.
With a sense of urgency, I swiftly cleared the table, arranging the used books on a cart parked nearby. Pulling the cart towards the librarian's station, I approached Mr. Herbert with a polite request.
"Mr. Herbert, I apologize for the inconvenience, but would you mind doing me a favor? I have an appointment in 15 minutes, and I'm pressed for time. If it's not too much trouble, could you kindly return these books to their respective shelves?" I asked, my sincerity evident in my voice.
Mr. Herbert's warm smile was reassuring as he responded, "The young lady is truly kind, but it is my duty to handle such tasks. Please, be at ease and allow me to assist you. If there are any other books you require, don't hesitate to ask. I'll gladly be at your service."
Feeling grateful for his understanding, I returned his smile and nodded in appreciation. Collecting my papers and notes, I bid the library farewell and made my way outside.
As I stepped out of the door, I immediately spotted Mira, who seemed to have been waiting for me for quite some time. Her face lit up with a smile upon seeing me, and she walked towards me.
"My lady, let me help you," she offered, reaching out to take the papers and notes I was holding. Seriously, even if I do have poor health, I couldn't help but feel a twinge of frustration at the assumption that I was too weak to even carry such things. Sigh.
Kakagaling ko lamang kasi sa sakit recently. It wasn't really that alarming, pero halos buong manor ay nagkagulo nung bigla na lamang akong nagcollapse sa garden while taking a short stroll around the area. Kakatapos ko lamang kasi noon kumain and nagpapababa lamang ako ng kinain ko, pero hindi ko naman lubos na akalaing mayroon na pala akong sinat nung umaga pa lang. But I failed to notice it as I was too engrossed in reading the newly released series of a famous novel writer in this world.
Upon reaching my chambers, Mira swiftly assisted me in changing my clothes. I decided to leave my hair loosely cascading down my shoulders, not bothering to style it. I also chose not to put on any makeup, as there was no need for it. Kaartehan lang yan eh, hindi naman ako lalabas ng Clorance Manor.
After a spritz of perfume, I stood up from the vanity area and briefly admired my reflection in the full-length mirror. A smile of contentment spread across my face. Having inhabited this body for two years, I had grown quite accustomed to being Cassia Clorance. I had fully assimilated into her identity, and it had been a while since we last conversed. I was uncertain of her current whereabouts, but I had made a promise to her that I must honor.
We left my chambers and proceeded towards the Count's Office, where we encountered Camille carrying a tray of tea sets and Rosette with a selection of cookies and berries. I acknowledged them with a nod before taking the lead and knocking on the Count's door. The door swung open almost instantly, revealing Philip, who wore an ear-to-ear grin.
I couldn't help but smirk, aware of the reason behind his good mood. I knew he had been under immense pressure due to Father's aggressive demeanor, leading to an increased workload for Philip. He hadn't even had the chance to return home to his family. It was admirable how loyal and dedicated he remained, refusing to quit despite the challenging circumstances.
"My lady, please come in," Philip gestured, inviting me inside the office. I nodded and entered, followed by Mira, Camille, and Rosette.
As I stepped into the office, I noticed that the Count was still engrossed in his paperwork, seemingly oblivious to my presence. His expression was serious, indicating how focused he was on his current tasks.
With measured steps, I approached him, and a stifled chuckle almost escaped me as I stood by his side, yet he remained oblivious to my presence. As I glanced at the paper he was diligently working on, a sense of familiarity washed over me when I noticed the imperial family's insignia at the top of the document. It was a symbol I had come to know all too well during my time in this world.
As much as I would want to know kung ano yung context ng sinusulat nya, hindi ko magawa. Eh paano ba naman kasi, parang kinalaykay ng manok 'yong sulat nya. Aakalain mong sulat ng doctor kasi cursive sya pero sobrang difficult intindihin. Do the recipients of his letters even understand what he wrote? I'm seriously getting dizzy just from staring at it.
I shrugged off the thought and playfully went closer to my father's ear. Then whispered, "Fa-ther."
His reaction was even funnier than I expected, as he jumped in surprise, and his expression made it all the more amusing. Nang lingunin ko naman si Philip ay halos mamula na yung mukha nya sa pagpipigil ng tawa.
"Goodness, Cassia! You almost gave me a heart attack," he softly exclaimed, his frustration evident. I approached him and enveloped him in a comforting embrace.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to startle you. You were just so engrossed in your work that you didn't even notice me coming in. And don't you forget what time it is?" I raised an eyebrow, playfully reminding him.
He turned to glance at the majestic grandfather clock. "Has time flown by so swiftly? Forgive me, my dear. I was engrossed in matters concerning the imperial family, and the hours slipped away unnoticed. Can you find it in your heart to pardon this hapless father?" he pleaded in a gentle, coaxing tone, revealing an endearing side that was hard to resist.
"I will forgive you," I said, and his smile immediately returned. "But, only on the condition that you allow me to go to the capital on Thursday. I wish to partake in the festival they'll be holding."
His smile waned, replaced by a concerned expression. I understood his worries, but attending the festival was something I earnestly desired. I hadn't truly enjoyed it when I first arrived here, and I missed last year's event. Witnessing the fireworks display was an experience I badly yearned for.
"Alright, I'll grant you permission, but you must be accompanied by at least five guards," he stipulated.
"Father! One guard is enough. I can ask Sir Vince to escort me," I retorted.
"Or I could be your escort instead."
We all turned towards the door upon hearing a familiar voice. My face contorted with displeasure as I beheld my brother's unwelcome presence. He rushed towards me, eager to embrace me, but I instinctively pushed him away.
"Get away from me, moron. I don't know you," I stated with a stoic face, projecting an air of coldness and aloofness.
"Still upset with me? Come on, lil sis. I never meant for that to happen. Your brother has already apologized. What more do you want from me?" He pleaded, resembling a puppy seeking forgiveness after making a mess on the floor.
"Get lost," I coldly retorted, unyielding despite the sadness etched on his face. I felt a pang of guilt, but I refused to let his expression sway me. Hindi ako marupok.
Father sighed and uttered words that sent me into a fit of anger. "I'll permit you to go to the festival, but your brother will be the one guarding you."
I immediately turned to Father, unable to believe his decision. "Father!" I exclaimed, throwing a tantrum.
"That's fair, Father. You can trust me. I'll ensure my sister's safety," he said, playfully winking at me.
I rolled my eyes in disgust. "Argh! I hate you, Cassius!"
"I already said I'm sorry, Cassia. I didn't mean to harm your pet bunny."
"It had a red collar! Are you blind? Do you know how precious Mabaya was to me?" Emotion overwhelmed me, as it was my first time owning a pet, a cute bunny at that. Estella and the girls had given it to me as a birthday gift last year, and I named it Mabaya because its eyes matched the same shade as my eyes, red.
I was taken aback when his hand gently touched my face. I hadn't even realized he had approached me so closely. He softly wiped away the tears that I hadn't been aware of shedding.
"Hush now, Cassia. Don't cry. I genuinely regret accidentally causing harm to your bunny. That's why I have something to offer you as compensation," he explained.
I looked up at him just as he called someone from the door outside the office. A maid entered, carrying a cage containing...
"A cat...?" I murmured in surprise.
Kinuha ni Cassius ang pusa sa loob ng cage at saka iyon iniabot sa akin. It was furry and incredibly soft. As I held it, it nuzzled affectionately against my chest, exuding a warm and endearing presence. I couldn't help but feel a flutter of butterflies in my stomach. Ang cute!
"Is this... for me?" I inquired, gazing up at Cassius' smiling face. He nodded and gently patted my head.
"Take good care of her," he said. I nodded in response, a bright smile spreading across my face as I played with the cat in my arms. She was so adorable! A red ribbon adorned her neck, contrasting beautifully against her pure white fur. Her eyes, too, were a striking shade of red.
"What would you name her?" Father's voice interrupted, drawing my attention.
I glanced at Father and then back at the cat, contemplating her name. "Nyebe, I want to name her that," I decided.
"You have a unique way of naming your pets. First, there was Mabaya with the bunny, and now Nyebe. Where do you get those ideas?" My brother inquired curiously.
With a smile, I replied, "I just made them up." I decided to play it safe and keep my unique naming inspirations to myself. There was no need to reveal the true origins of the names. Hindi naman nila malalaman na mga filipino words 'yong mga 'yon eh.
"Ehem!" We all turned to Philip as he cleared his throat. He smiled and pointed at the table. "I apologize for disturbing your family bonding, but the tea has gone cold."
We couldn't help but chuckle, realizing that we had been so preoccupied that we forgot the primary purpose of our appointment - tea time. Although I was slightly irritated by Cassius' unexpected presence, I appreciated the gesture he made to come and reconcile with me, even going as far as bringing a cat as a peace offering.
Father instructed the maids to bring fresh tea, as Camille's earlier offering had gone cold. My brother, ever thoughtful, suggested adding some s'mores and strawberry cake, knowing they were my favorite treats. Mira seemed concerned about my sweet tooth, but I couldn't resist indulging in the desserts.
The afternoon passed quickly as we engaged in lively conversation. Before we knew it, evening had arrived, and we retired to our chambers to prepare for dinner. Father wanted to excuse himself, but I insisted he join us. He had a habit of overworking himself, and it was important for us to appear united in front of the servants.
Gone is the 'Villainess Lady Clorance' title. Instead, I've succeeded in reshaping my image into a more positive light. Now, I am perceived as a young, smart, beautiful, and talented lady of the Clorance family, cherished and adored by my father, the Count. All of the efforts I've put into changing my fate have slowly been paying off.
Days had passed, and finally, the long-awaited day had arrived. However, my excitement waned as I spotted my brother while walking to the carriage.
"You don't have to look at me like that, lil sis. You're hurting your brother's feelings," he said, his tone resembling that of a sad, cute puppy.
Who would have imagined that Cassia had a brother like this? In the novel, he was described as stoic, but it seemed there were aspects not clearly mentioned about the true nature of the characters.
After the incident two years ago, I discovered that it was a misunderstanding that Cassius didn't care about Cassia. Much like the Count, he merely struggled with expressing his feelings. Come to think of it, both father and son had somewhat similar personalities.
Lost in contemplation, my thoughts were abruptly disrupted when I felt an unexpected pinch on my cheeks.
"What the--Ouch!" I let out a surprised scream.
"Why are you so absent-minded? I called you multiple times, but you weren't responding," he inquired.
"I just had some things on my mind," I responded. He didn't seem entirely convinced by my answer, evident in the slight skepticism lingering on his face. However, he just crossed his arms then turned his attention towards the window.
I followed suit and noticed we were nearing the town square. And right before I knew it, we had arrived. The whole area was bustling with people, and the sight brought joy to my heart. It reminded me of the night markets back in my real world. A wave of nostalgia washed over me as I smiled in delight.
I grabbed my brother's hand and eagerly pulled him towards the food stall selling skewers.
"Brother, let's buy some!" I exclaimed, looking up at him with excitement as we stood in front of the mouth-watering display. I couldn't resist the cravings that washed over me.
"But aren't they unhealthy? You might get sick," he voiced his genuine concern.
"No, they're delicious, I just know it! Let's give it a try, please?" I tugged at my brother's shirt, attempting to act cute to convince him. I felt a sense of triumph when he sighed and reached for his wallet.
"Aaah! This tastes soooo good!" I commented between bites, savoring the delectable flavors.
"How many times do you have to say that?" my brother chuckled, reaching out to my face and using his finger to wipe away the sauce stains. "Such a messy eater."
"I am not!" I retorted, playfully defending myself.
After we finished eating, we continued to explore the lively surroundings. I was pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable it was to be in my brother's company like this.
But just moments later, I found myself once again in an awkward situation. It seemed like I was constantly being pulled into these mishaps. I couldn't believe my luck!
Lost in my thoughts, I wasn't able to react swiftly when someone accidentally pushed me, causing me to collide with a stranger and both of us tumbling to the ground. Now, to my embarrassment, I found myself lying on top of him.
Stunned and unable to move, my mind struggled to regain focus. I couldn't tear my eyes away from the stranger's face, which somehow looked familiar.
"I apologize, my lady. But could you please get off me," he said, breaking the trance.
Embarrassed, I attempted to stand up, but my shoe heel got stuck in the tiled floor, causing me to stumble and accidentally peck the stranger's cheek... wait, WHAT?!
"O-Oh my god! I-I'm so s-sorry. I... I didn't mean to. My heel got stuck, and... Oh God, I wish the world would swallow me right now..." I stammered, feeling utterly mortified. I couldn't bear to look him in the eye after such an embarrassing mishap.
To my surprise, I heard a faint chuckle from him. "Are you seriously laughing right now?" I asked, half-annoyed, half-amused.
"I'm sorry," he managed to say between laughter. "But, you don't have to go far to ask the world to gobble you up,," he added, his laughter easing the tension.
My face flushed even more, realizing I must have said that out loud. Shit! I couldn't believe the level of humiliation I was experiencing.
"Please, stop teasing me," I pleaded, feeling my heart race from the awkwardness of the situation. He didn't say anything in response, but his hands gently rested on my shoulders as he helped me stand up, showing a hint of a playful smile. He then proceeded to skillfully freed my stuck heel from the tiled floor, which appeared to have cracked.
Once we were both standing, I didn't waste a moment and immediately bowed at a ninety-degree angle. With my eyes closed, I sincerely apologized, "I deeply apologize for what just happened earlier. I didn't mean to fall on you and... the peck... I'm really sorry about it. If you want compensation, I'll do whatever you ask, as long as it's within my ability. I'm truly, truly sorry."
"Please, raise your head. There's no need to bow so low to apologize. It was an accident, and neither of us got hurt. That's what matters," he said in a serious tone, but a small smile played on his lips.
Wow... "You look handsome."
"Thank you for the compliment," he replied, his smile growing wider as he chuckled.
Gah! Not again! I blurted it out without realizing. Why does my mouth betray me like this?
His face really looks so familiar, but I couldn't quite remember where I had seen him before.
"Cassia!"
Both of us turned towards the direction of the voice. It was definitely my brother's voice. Looks like he's looking for me.
"It seems your company is looking for you. Then, I shall also take my leave. It was nice meeting you again, my lady. I'll see you next time," he said before blending into the crowd and walking away.
Wait a minute...
Oh my God!
So he was the same guy who saved me from falling off the bridge two years ago! That's why he looks so familiar.
But... why did he say we'll meet again next time? Does he know me? I don't remember mentioning my name to him.
My mind was filled with questions, but when my brother found me, he nagged me so much that I forgot about them. Despite that, we continued to enjoy the event together, and he held my hand tightly, afraid I might get lost and be separated from him again.
Eventually, we discovered the perfect spot to watch the fireworks while savoring popcorn. My brother had done his research to ensure I had the best experience, and I couldn't help but feel grateful for his thoughtfulness.
"Thanks, brother."
"Anything for my little sister," he replied with a warm smile.
For the rest of the night, I basked in the comfort of my brother's presence, feeling loved and cared for by the one person who truly cherished me.

Amidst the grandeur and festivities that adorned the capital, there was another event that drew the attention of nobles and elite alike; the prestigious auction.
The opulent hall, adorned with chandeliers dripping with crystals, exuded an air of sophistication and elegance. Rows of plush velvet chairs filled with esteemed guests, their faces masked in mystery, surrounded the center stage where valuable treasures awaited their new owners.
Among them, the Crown Prince, Mikhail, stood, his identity concealed by a vibrant red mask that matched his regal attire. With keen eyes, he observed the new arrival. A young man who confidently approached and took the vacant chair beside Mikhail without a word of greeting or apology for his tardiness. The Prince's expression remained calm, but his eyes revealed a mix of curiosity and concern.
"You're late, Zachary," he said, his voice tinged with subtle reproach. He had expected Zachary to be punctual, especially considering the significance of the auction event.
Zachary's demeanor seemed undeterred by the Crown Prince's remark. He offered a nonchalant smile and replied, "Apologies, Your Highness. Traffic was rather unforgiving tonight."
Mikhail arched an eyebrow, amused by Zachary's audacity. "Traffic, you say? I trust you had an eventful journey, then."
Zachary chuckled, his eyes glinting mischievously behind his own mask. "You could say that, Your Highness. But I'm here now, and that's what matters, isn't it?"
The Crown Prince nodded, acknowledging the truth in Zachary's words. Despite his friend's casual demeanor, he knew that Zachary took the auction seriously, his desire to acquire a particular item evident in his determined gaze.
However, Mikhail knew that there was something eventful that happened to his friend seeing as how he seems to be in a good mood compared to what he usually looks.
While the Crown Prince was filled with curiosity, Zachary just couldn't get enough of what happened earlier. All of the scene just kept on repeating in his head for the entire night.
To be continued...
