Chapter eleven - Triggering memories.
"When are you going to teach me to fight some more?" Amelia inquires, "I kinda miss you punching me in the face."
"I will after this movie." He responds, his eyes glued to the screen watching The Conjuring. Amelia groans silently, bored out of her mind. She had watched the film at least three times before with Evan when she goes to visit him, but that was bearable because she was more interested in Evan's reactions than the actual movie. She swore the film gave him heart failure.
"There's no point now, its nearly seven." She says, glancing at the clock. "Promise to train me tomorrow morning?"
"Promise." He says, still staring at the TV screen. She wasn't sure why he was so interested in the film, she didn't find it that interesting herself.
"Why are you so interested in the film?"
"Does it look like I've watched a load of possession films?"
"...Not really."
"Exactly. It's interesting to me, now be quiet."
Amelia huffed and leaned back on the sofa. She was being told to be quiet in her own home. She folded her arms and stared at the TV, having no other choice but to watch the film. Sure, she could grab her laptop and surf the internet, but her laptop was upstairs and she felt too comfortable on the sofa.
Suddenly the light turns itself off, along with the TV. The room goes dark and for a moment Amelia thinks there was actually a spirit in her apartment, but obviously there was a logical explanation for this.
"What's happened?" Bucky asks. The sun was still up outside so she could just about see him through the darkness.
"I probably ran out of electricity." She answers, and then there's a knock on her door. She gets up and walks to her door, and Bucky stands and hides somewhere in case it was HYDRA again. She opens it and see's that it was Hayley, the women who lived in the apartment next door with her boyfriend. Amelia lets out a quiet sigh of relief.
"Hey," She greets happily, "I was just wondering if your power has gone off too?"
"Yeah, it has." Amelia answers, and Bucky hears there conversation and comes out of hiding, knowing he was safe. He doesn't show himself to her neighbor though, in case she recognized him for the news. "There must be a power cut in the building."
"Hmm." Hayley agree's, "That sucks. I hope it gets fixed soon."
"Me too." Amelia replies, and Hayley lets out a small sigh.
"Aright then, I'll let you get back to your boyfriend."
"My boyfriend?" Amelia raises her brow and Hayley smirks.
"Don't think I haven't noticed that hot hunk walk into our apartment building with ya. I swear, I could see those abs through his shirt, but don't tell Chris that I've been lookin'." She winks at Amelia. Amelia chuckles at her, even though it wasn't true. And Bucky is sitting on the couch smirking because of the compliments he was receiving.
"I've got to go," Amelia tells her, and she nods in understanding, "See you around."
"You too," She gives you a small wave and walks towards her apartment, "Bye!"
She closes her front door and walks back into the living room. She looks at Bucky and notices that he was smirking slightly. She rolls her eyes playfully, "Looks like there's a power cut."
"When will the power come back on?"
"No idea."
Bucky sighs, already addicted to watching shows and films. He was more out going in the past, always flirting with women and feeling extremely proud of going in the war (according to the information he read at the Smithsonian.) But now he couldn't really go out otherwise he could be caught by HYDRA. It was boring to stay inside your house back then, so he normally went out on dates or to the bar with Steve. But now there was laptops and films to watch and other fun stuff to do, but now the power had gone off and there was nothing interesting to do.
"I'll grab some candles." Amelia speaks up, grabbing a few vanilla scented candles from out the cupboard. Amelia wasn't sure why she had so many of candles. She probably had about fifteen, but she brought quite a few because they burn down fast.
She placed the candles on a shelf and placed some on the coffee table while Bucky grabbed a box of matches and lit them up. The room was suddenly light again and they both sat on the couch with a thump.
"So," Amelia starts, "What shall we do?"
Bucky shrugs slightly, not sure what to say.
"Why don't we try and work on your memory?" Amelia suggests. Bucky turns to face her and nods. Amelia turns her body to face his and crosses her legs. Bucky does the same.
"So how do I do this?" Bucky questions. Amelia shrugs.
"Honestly, I have no idea. Close your eyes."
Bucky closes his eyes, following her instructions.
"Now, try to picture your happiest moment. It's in there somewhere, no one can forget their happiest moment. The feeling you feel, the butterflies in your stomach, your cheeks hurting from smiling too much."
Bucky tries to remember, but he can't think of anything. The only time he felt butterflies in his stomach was when him and Amelia took that photo together. The only happy memories he could remember was after he met Amelia. Before that he worked for HYDRA and he couldn't remember his life before then. He sighed and opened his eyes, shaking his head.
"I can't."
"You can, just try again."
"It wont work. Why wont it work?"
"A forgotten memory is a subconscious memory stored in your brain," She tells him, "I guess the only way to remember these memories is for something of familiarity to do with that specific memory."
"So, I can trigger these memories if witness, hear or smell something familiar?"
"Yeah, that's why some patients I've helped in the hospital get their memories back out of nowhere. They normally do something that triggers them to remember."
"But It's not like I can just go to the shop and trigger some memories I've had with Steve there. Someone could notice me." He sounded annoyed now. He just wanted to remember who he was.
"Well, did you love anyone? What about when you liked to flirt with women?" She says, remembering that the description they wrote about Bucky in the Smithsonian said that he was a ladies man, "Try flirting with me."
"I can't flirt with you."
"Why not?" Amelia questions, her brow raising. Bucky felt embarrassed.
"I can't even remember how to flirt."
"Flirting should just come naturally."
"But back then I was probably good at it."
"Well, you've watched films where people have flirted. Just be full of yourself and confident that I'm going to go on a date with you."
"Fine." He agrees, embarrassed. He was going to sound like such a fool, he knew it. He felt ridiculous. He looked at her and tried to think of some pick up lines, "Uh, hello, what's your name?"
Amelia couldn't help but to smirk. She held in her laugh, "I'm Amelia. Yourself?"
"Bucky." He replies, "But you can call me Buck."
"Okay, Buck." She responds. When she calls him Buck he feels like he's heard it somewhere before, but couldn't place who had called it him so many times.
"What have you been up to lately?"
Amelia's face falls, "You're meant to be flirting, not having a conversation with me."
"I can't remember how to." He snaps, running a hand through his hair. He was sick of repeating himself.
"Fine, point is you used to be a flirty person. So close your eyes and imagine a woman. Maybe someone you can remember from your past, or someone you saw on TV. Anyone."
"Okay." He mumbles and closes his eyes. He pictured a beautiful woman, and the first beautiful woman he could think off was Amelia.
"Now, Imagine taking her into your room. I'm not sure how your room looked like back at home, so try to picture that too or just make a room up. Try to make it old fashioned." she realised that if Bucky can't remember his past he might benefit some looking at photos from the past online, but they didn't have electricity.
He does as she says, feeling slightly embarrassed that he was imaging her. He pictured holding her hand and taking her into his room, the room walls being a light brown colour, the bed feeling uncomfortable and the pillows being flat.
He feels Amelia place her hand on his cheek and her other on his arm as she tried to use touch to help him trigger a memory. He imagined her doing this to him in his imaginary room, her hair curled nicely and her eye shadow done perfectly like they had been out to a party. He imagined his blue eyes staring into hers, and he slowly leaned in, placing his lips onto hers. He wanted to remember doing this so bad, because obviously it seemed like he did this often. He tried to grasp onto a memory, hold onto it, remember who he did this with and if he ever loved this woman, or any woman, or if she was just someone he met at the bar. But the only person he could image being this intimate with was Amelia.
Amelia drags her hand up from his cheek and up to his hair, helping Bucky remember the touch of another person. "Don't go that intimate, I don't want you to get a boner while were trying to jog your memory."
When she said that he opened his eyes immediately, losing the moment. He felt silly and although he knew Amelia was joking, it made him feel weird. It would be inappropriate that he was imaging kissing her, because he knew he shouldn't try to form a relationship with her. HYDRA would find him sooner or later, and he planned on leaving before they found him here, otherwise Amelia would definitely be in danger and he couldn't let her get hurt.
"What happened?" She asks, taking her hands away from him, confused to why he opened his eyes straight away, "Did you remember something?"
"...No." He starts, not sure on what to say, "I just- I know it wont work."
Her face falls and she sighs, "Bucky-"
"It wont work." He tells her again, "I'm sure I'll remember a memory when I do something that triggers it. But I want to stop for tonight, please."
"Okay then, If that's what you want." She replies, and he smiles slightly at her apologetically that he gave up so soon. Amelia furrows her eyes at him, wondering why he decided to stop as soon as she mentioned that he could get a boner if he imagined going too far with a woman. Was he actually going to imagine going that far? Does he even remember how to? Surely he does, even virgins know how to have sex when they haven't even done it yet.
"So, who did you imagine?" She questions awkwardly, looking at her fingers as she tapped the arm of the sofa slightly.
"Um," He pauses awkwardly, "That, um, that woman from Pirates And The Caribbean."
"Keira Knightley?"
"Yeah, her."
"...Okay." She smirks, trying to hide her laugh. She loved that he just somehow stumbled into her home, because now she's inflicted all her nerdy ways onto him. She tried to think of something to do since the power was out, but couldn't concentrate as she was trying to stop herself from giggling at Bucky's awkward face.
