"We killed Santa Clause," I whisper to myself as I watch Cole drag the body through the snow. I follow behind him to fix the trail in the snow. Seeing the lifeless body makes me sick. More than sick, even. I don't think I'll ever be able to recover from this.
Cole had the idea to put the body in a shed in the woods behind my house. Since that was the only idea we managed to come up with, that's what we went with. I was just desperate to get the Santa out of my kitchen floor. I fear that I won't be able to stand in the kitchen without thinking of the man who once collapsed on it.
"Oh, man. I just realized we're getting our fingerprints all over him," I say as I express my worries. Moe panicked ideas come to my head. If someone finds this body then our lives are completely over. We won't be able to get a job, we might not be able to live in certain areas, we-
"Rose," Cole sharply snaps. "You're spiraling, I can tell." I shake my head and wipe the sweat off my forehead, despite it being super cold outside. Of course, I'm spiraling, I don't know how Cole can act like everything is fine. Everything is not fine. We killed someone and now we're hiding the body in a shed.
Cole drags the man in the corner. I look away and turn my head up to the sky. Tears threaten to spill over and I finally let them. I sob out to the world while Cole hides the man in the shed. My nose stings as the cold bites it. The pain is what I deserve, however. I should feel bad. I should feel bad.
"Okay, we'll have to figure out a different place to put him later. This will do for now," Cole explains like he's hidden a dead body before. But, when I turn around, I don't see a careless guy. Cole's hands shake as he wipes them at his sides, his eyes are puffy, and he looks like he's aged ten years.
"What if more people come looking for him? His car is still in our driveway," I stutter out my thoughts and the holes in our plan that have not been yet established. People will be concerned for him. Not only his family and friends but the people at the mall too. They probably wanted to know why he wasn't at the mall working right now.
Cole seemed to have read my mind just now because he said, "I can fill in for Santa at the mall. We can return his car once we get there." Cole's plan already seems messy to me, but he continues. "If you're okay with it, you can pretend to be a worker or something and leave a note explaining the missing reindeer." I take this information all in. We don't have tons of options. We also don't have lots of time to think of things to do. The reindeer come back to me. The reason why this all started.
"We need to get rid of the reindeer. Like, move them somewhere else. We can't have them here," I add and Cole agrees. If the plan doesn't work then the animals can't stay here. That's how the Santa found us in the first place.
"Alright, I guess we'll figure it out as we go. For now, I need you to turn away because I'll have to take Santas' clothes." Cole quickly says before going back into the shed. I whip around in the other direction and put my hands over my face.
"You can't just take his clothes!" I scream out. The thought is disgusting. I try to think of anything else.
"We don't have time to pick up a suit," Cole responds from inside the shed. I hear lots of movement coming within it. "The parents will be here soon so we need to leave with the cars soon." A sad feeling washes over me. We do have to do this and we have to do it quickly. Our plan could go so wrong. I pray that I have some guidance and that this won't go any more south.
Cole tells me I can open my eyes now. We start walking back towards the house after Cole locked the shed. I try not to glance in his direction to see the clothes in his hands. I might just gag if I see them. Before we leave the house, I grab a few things from inside, lock the house, and text my parents that Cole and I are going out to shop. I hate lying to my parents but I definitely can't tell them what just happened.
Cole and I planned to take two cars. I drive mine while Cole drives Santa's car. He found his keys in his clothes so he was able to start it. I send out another prayer before we leave to go to the mall.
