My name is Beatrice Prior.

I live in a city where we are separated from the rest of the world by a wall, and from each other by factions.

Hundreds of years ago our world was destroyed in a brutal war that eliminated most of humanity. It is believed that we here in the city are the last of humanity.

In order to maintain peace, the founders of our city chose to form the five factions each designed to contribute certain things to our society and each with its own beliefs.

The Abnegation are the ones who value selflessness.

The Amity are the ones who value peace and happiness.

The Candor value honesty and always tell the truth.

The Erudite value intelligence.

And the Dauntless value bravery.

You can only belong to one faction. You are either honest, kind, selfless, smart, or brave. We have to take a test to see which faction we belong to.

We are supposed to trust the test and go where it tells us where we belong. Although even before we take the test most people have a general idea of where they belong.

But I don't.

I don't know where I belong.
