Chapter 36: It's Over

I groan in pain as they shove me to my knees. I look down at the ground tears welling up in my eyes as the barrel of a gun is pressed to the back of my head.

Not once in my life did I imagine that this was how I was going to die. But it comes to show me just how uncontrollable our lives are.

I hear the bullet being clicked into place.

I picture all the people I love in my head. My friends, my parents, my brother, and Tobias. Thankful I at least got to say goodbye to them.

I squeeze my eyes shut and wait for death. It's all I can do after all.

A trigger is pulled and a shot rings through the air swiftly followed by another and then two thuds of bodies dropping to the floor.

I open my eyes and look up as Tori runs over to me her gun smoking from the shots she just fired. Shots that killed the two men who were going to kill me.

She grabs my non-wounded arm and pulls me up.

"You sure Four trained you enough because you got captured easily. I'm going to have to have a strong conversation with him at the end of this."

"Thank you, Tori" I smile at her.

She smiles back.

"Don't mention it." She hands me a spare gun from her belt.

"They took Tobias."

"I know I saw."

"We have to get him back."

"I was about to say the same thing."

"Over here!" We hear someone yell.

I turn my head in the direction of the yell and see five Dauntless soldiers running toward us with their guns aimed at us.

"We have to go." Tori said

She and I take off and dart between all the houses to try and lose them. But we are surrounded and losing them is proving to be very difficult.

"We have to get somewhere safe." Tori huffs, all this running is catching up to us and breathing is becoming difficult. My open gunshot wound that is still bleeding isn't making things easier.

"I know where we can go." I said.

I look around as more soldiers start running towards us.

"Lead the way then."

I take the lead and start leading Tori toward the warehouse. However, I can't risk leading the other soldiers to the pack of hiding Abnegation members so we had to take the long route through the city.

More and more soldiers chase after us and shots are flying through the air zipping past us.

We run across a wide road, another shot is fired and Tori stumbles behind me. We stop in an ally and fire back at the soldiers.

"Are you okay?" I call over my shoulder.

"Yeah, I'm fine just keep shooting." Tori groans.

Shot after shot each of my bullets hit its target. I make sure to hit their legs or arms in any spot that would cause harm but not death. I want to stop them not kill them.

Once they were all down I turn around so that we can keep running but I stop and my heart brakes a bit when I see Tori on the ground, blood seeping through a bullet wound in her stomach.

"Tori." I cry.

I kneel and press my hands to her wound to try and stop the bleeding.
But even though her weak state she manages to grab my hand and pushes it away.

"Leave." She commanded me her voice is weak.

I press my hands back over her wound.

"No," I snap, "not without you." I add with a softer tone.

She pushes my hand away again.

"You have to wake them up. You have to save him. I'll...I'll just slow you down." She groans and hisses in pain as the blood begins to flow out at a faster rate drenching her shirt in it.

"I don't even know where they are controlling it from." I cry, my tears are racing down my cheeks.

"Dauntless." She said.

I wipe her hair out of her face and hold her hand.

"Please Tori you can't die. Tobias needs you. I need you. " I beg, my plea coming out with a strangled sob.

Her breathing begins to slow down. She looks up into my eyes and smiles at me.

"Be brave Tris." She whispers to me as she takes her last breath.

Lifeless she slumps further down to the ground, her body a dead weight.

Letting go of her hand I cover my mouth to keep my screams of despair in not wanting them to alert any soldiers nearby.

The only thing I want to do is stay here and mourn the loss of my friend but I can't let her final wish down. I need to stop the simulation but there is no way I can do it alone.

Picking up Tori's gun just for extra ammunition I sprint the rest of the way to the warehouse where I thankfully find the door still unlocked just like I left it.

But I am even more relieved when I find my parents and everyone else still inside and okay.

My mother and Evelyn rush over to me when they see my arm and they make me sit down and remove my jacket.

"Beatrice, what happened?" My mother asks me. She holds my other hand while Evelyn examines my bullet wound.

"I went back to Abnegation and I was helping Four get some of the Abnegation out of there but we were discovered and captured. I was shot during the process. Jeanine took Four back to Dauntless with her and she ordered the other guards to execute me,"

"Oh my God." Caleb gasps.

"My friend Tori rescued me but on the way back here she was shot. Mom, she died." I sob as the fresh memory flashes before my eyes.

My mother gently pushes my head to rest against her shoulder my tears dripping onto her dress.

"I am so sorry." She whispers into my ear.

For five minutes they all remain silent and let me mourn the loss of my friend.

It was Evelyn who eventually broke the silence.

"Beatrice the bullet is still in here I need to cut it out."

I wipe my tears away with my hand and then turn to look at her.

"Do what you have to do and make it quick I have to get to Dauntless to stop the simulation."

My father's eyes went wide at my statement.

"Beatrice that's insane you can't just run into the Dauntless compound and do that they will kill you."

"I know that which is why I need some help. I need some of you to come with me and help me stop this and to save him."

They all look at me like I am insane and I can't blame them. None of them are trained for this. But they are all I've got.

"I'll go," My mother said," I was born in Dauntless I know the area."

I look out at everyone else. Caleb is the next to step up.

"Me too, I helped them create this I have to help stop it."

My father sighs.

"I'll go too."

"Andrew-"

"No Marcus if my family is going then I can't just stay behind and let them go."

Marcus pats my dad's shoulder.

"Then I'll go too there might be some electronic security that we need to get  through and I will be able to help with that."

As much as I hate the idea of him coming along especially with Tobias being there he does have a point about the security.

"Marcus." Evelyn said she almost seems upset at the idea of him going. But I guess he is the only family she has left or at least to her knowledge.

"I'll be okay." He smiles at her which makes me want to hit him but that would cause too many issues. Besides I know of at least two people who deserve that honour more than I do.

"Okay the rest of you just stay here we will send you a signal when we have stopped the simulation then you can go and help the people over in Abnegation. Understood?"

They all nod.

"Great now Evelyn if you would be so kind please take this thing out of me."

My mother hands me something to bite into while Evelyn grabs a knife and starts cutting.

***

The wind rushing past the moving train where we are all currently sitting is all I can hear. My arm throbs with pain from the mini surgery Evelyn gave me.

As the familiar roof approaches, I push the button and open the doors.

"What's going on?" Caleb asks.

"It's time to jump." I said.

One by one we managed to jump onto the roof everyone except my mother and I landed flat on their asses.

They all follow me to the edge where the large hole is looking up at us.

I climb up onto the ledge.

"There is a net at the bottom. Don't think just jump."

And that is exactly what I do.

My father is the last of our group to jump down into the net.

After we help him out we run down the hallways making sure to stay quiet with every step.

The sound of boots shuffling against the stone ground makes us all stop and hide behind a wall.

Ducking low to the ground I peer around the corner my eyes catching the sight of Peter pacing back and forth, his hands clasped around his gun.

I demonstrate to the group to stay quiet by placing my finger on my lips.

Holding my gun in the shooting position I sneak up behind Peter and press my gun to the back of his head. Even if he tries to attack me he isn't faster than a bullet.

"Drop the gun and get on the ground." I command him.

To my surprise, he does as I ask and drops his gun however he does not get on the ground instead he turns to face me a smirk pulling on his lips.

He chuckles when he sees me.

"Hey stiff."

"So you did know about me."

"Jeanine had suspicions after she reviewed the aptitude test results. Looks like the crazy bitch was right after all. Had to admit I had my doubts but I guess even I can be proven wrong."

"Why are you awake?" I ask.

"They needed me. Apparently, I am a valuable asset to have." He smirks.

"Well, then how about you prove just how worthy you are and tell where they are controlling it from."

"And what if I don't huh are you gonna shoot me?" He asks in a mocking tone.

"You really shouldn't underestimate my character, Peter."

"Yeah, sure I'm so scared of the pathetic little stiff." He chuckles.

I scoff and roll my eyes.

"You know normally I wouldn't do anything when someone calls me that. But today just really isn't a good day to piss me off."

I lower the gun and aim at his arm. I pull the trigger and he topples over in pain.

My mother and the rest of the group run over to us.

"Beatrice, how could you do that?" Caleb gasps.

"He had it coming," I snap. I turn back to Peter who is looking up at me in terror while clutching his arm. I click another bullet into place and aim the gun at his head," Now here is my offer take me to the place where they are controlling the simulation and I won't put a bullet in your head. It's your choice."

***

Our group now including a still bleeding Peter is hiding behind a wall looking out at the guards standing outside the door to the control room.

Peter although stupid knows when he is beat and he kept up his end of the deal. He told me everything he knew. It wasn't much but it was enough.

"Okay all of you stay here I'll go stop it." I instruct them.

I look over at my mom and nod my head. We raise our weapons and the shots began to fly.

We fired at them and they quickly fired back but we were better and their bodies dropped to the floor.

Giving one last hug to my mom I open the door and go inside.

The first thing that catches my eyes is the advanced computer system and the complex program that is running on the big screens being monitored by Jeanine and her colleagues.

I turn my head and that's when I see him tied to a chair with leads connected to his temples, a blank look on his face.

I rush over to him and start to untie his restraints.

"Tobias it's okay I'm here. I'm gonna get you out of this."

He doesn't say a word just slowly turns his head and looks at me.

As soon as his hands were free he jumps out of the chair, wraps his hands around my throat, and starts to squeeze.

A small scream leaves my mouth alerting everyone in the room of my presence.

They all turn to look at me as Tobias continues to strangle me.

I try to hit him but he is too strong. All I can do was look up into his emotionless eyes but eventually, I couldn't even do that. The more he presses my throat the less oxygen I am getting and the more blurry my vision became.

I hear what sounds like buttons being pushed and then I feel the immediate sense of relief as Tobias removes his hands from my throat and I can breathe again.

Touching the newly forming bruises on my neck I look up as Tobias casually stands next to Jeanine. I now understood why he was doing this.

"He is in a simulation isn't he?"

Jeanine smirks at me.

"You are a smart girl not surprising  considering Erudite was one of your test results wasn't it?"

"How did you even get my actual result Tori made sure nobody would be able to?"

"Your friend was clever but I'm just better."

I scoff.

"Did anyone ever tell you that you have a big ego?"

"As amusing as it is talking to you and as fascinating as you are I just can't allow you to keep existing. You are a threat and you have to go. It's kind of ironic that your precious boyfriend will be the one to end you. It will be entertaining to see how he will react when I wake him up."

She looks over her shoulder and nods at her coworker who is holding a tablet.

He presses a few buttons then Tobias begins charging at me again but this time I am ready.

I don't have nearly as much training and strength as Tobias has but I manage to defend myself against some blows and even deliver some of my own.

I have to get him out but how?

We struggle on the ground, him trying to get his hands around my throat again and me trying my best to move away from him.

Then I see it...my way out.

Kicking him away I reach out and grab my gun and aim it at him.

"Tobias stop!" I cry out.

He stops for a brief second but then he continues to walk toward me.

I lay down on my back and he stands over me. The gun is still aimed up but there is no way I can shoot him. And then it hits me, I know what to do.

I flip the gun around and aim it at my head. He kneels and I let him take control of the weapon.

"It's okay I love you it's okay,"  He clicks a bullet into place while staring emotionlessly at me. He starts to turn his head away just like in his fear landscape. I grab his jaw and force him to look me in the eye," No Tobias you have to look at me. Please just see me." I bite my lip to stop my cries from coming out, tears well up in my eyes. I hope this works.

He shakes his head like he is fighting and then the same look he gave me when he saw me in the Abnegation sector shines in his eyes.

"Tris." He whispers.

I sigh with relief.

I look over his shoulder nobody is looking at us. Now is our chance.

"Go."

He turns and fires hitting one of the guys.

While Tobias has a shoot out I run to the others and punch them, knocking them out cold.

I hear the familiar sound of buttons being pushed and turn in time to see Jeanine copying her program to a flash drive.

Grabbing a knife from my belt I aim and throw it at her. My aim was good and the blade sinks deep into her hand pinning it to the screen.

She screams in pain.

As I run to her another guard tries to tackle me but I elbow him in the face and push him away.

I pull the knife out of her hand and press it to her throat.

"Stop the simulation now!" I yell at her.

"Never." She spits at me.

I look at the screen. The Dauntless are pushing Abnegation members to their knees and pointing guns at them. They are going to kill them.

I look over at Tobias who is putting together the simulation injector that they used on him.

"Not such a tough Dauntless soldier aren't you." She laughs

I smirk.

"You're right I'm not Dauntless or Abnegation or Erudite," Tobias tosses the object to me and I catch it," I'm Divergent."

I inject the transmitter into her neck and Tobias begins to type in the instructions.

Like a zombie, she turned the many Dauntless into she moved to her screens and deactivates the simulation, and deletes the copy of the program.

I watch in joy as the Dauntless wake up.

But they aren't the only ones. Jeanine wakes up and cries out in despair when she sees what we made her do.

"I told you you wouldn't win this."

With fury burning in her eyes she charges at me. But one good punch to her jaw and she was out cold.

Tobias walks over to me, his fingers gently tracing my neck and the bruises that marked it.

"It's okay, this is all over now." I whisper.

"Where is Tori?" He asks, but the way he did it makes it sound like he already knows the answer.

"She saved my life."

"And you saved theirs." He smiles while nodding at the screen.

"Oh come on I can't take all the credit. My super badass scary boyfriend helped me out." I chuckle.

"Scary boyfriend?" He raises his eyebrows as if he is amused.

I put my hands on his chest and lean forward, our lips inches apart.

"In a good way. Now are you going to kiss me or what."

He happily honors the request and we stand there holding each other and kissing.

***

Hand in hand Tobias and I walk back to Abnegation.

I sent my mother and the others that I came with back to Abnegation earlier than us. I knew Tobias didn't want to see Marcus but there is someone he should see and who I know would love to see him.

He stops when we reach the door to the hall. I heard that Evelyn was inside setting up a makeshift hospital.

"What's wrong?" I ask.

He looks down at the floor.

"What is she hates me for leaving? What if she doesn't want to see me?"

I walk over to him and force him to look me in the eye.

"She has been dying to know what happened to you. Trust me Tobias she will be so relieved to see you are okay. She just wants you back."

After he took a few deep breaths we went inside. He stayed back while I went over to Evelyn.

"Beatrice what can I do for you?" She asks.

"Someone wants to see you."

"What-"

"Mom."

At the sound of his voice, she froze for a few seconds then quickly turned around.

They stood there looking at each other for what felt like hours. A few people around us including my mother had noticed him.

"Is that?"

"It's can't be."

"He's alive."

"It's Tobias."

"He's alive."

"Why is he wearing black?"

Evelyn shakes her head as tears pool in her eyes. She looks shocked like she can't believe what she is seeing.

"Tobias?" She said, her voice breaking a bit as she bites back a sob.

"Mom." Tobias repeats but this time with a smile.

"Tobias!" Evelyn cries as she runs to him and pulls him into her embrace.

"I'm so sorry I left you!" Tobias cries into her shoulder.

With tears streaming down her face Evelyn cups his cheeks in her hands making him look at her.

"I'm just glad you're okay and you're back. You came back and that is all that matters to me."

"I thought you would be angry at me."

She wipes away a tear that was trickling down his cheek.

"You are my son and the light of my life. No matter what you do I will always love you. I am not angry with you and I never will be. I am just so happy you are back."

He smiles.

"I love you, mom." He said.

She pulls him into another hug.

"I love you too."

I stand back next to my mom and we silently watch the beautiful scene in front of us.

"So it's over?" My mom asks me.

I look over at her and smile.

"Yes, it is."
