Chapter 35: Abnegation Raid
The dinner table is buzzing with excitement. After the ceremony, our families gathered at my parent's house for a day of relaxation and bonding time.
My eyes continuously dart to Marcus sitting so calmly next to Evelyn acting like the perfect husband and man. All the times Marcus showed a brief moment of anger and I had thought I saw Evelyn almost quiver in fear were not figments of my imagination. I can't even imagine what goes on behind that closed door of their home.
The sound of a glass being tapped by a spoon brings my attention off Marcus.
My father raises his glass of water.
"I would just like to say that I am so proud of you three. Susan, Robert, and my darling daughter Beatrice you have all made us so proud and we all know that each of you will achieve greatness in your new roles in the faction."
"Thank you, dad." I smile at him.
The night went on with all of us just chatting then Robert, Susan, and I went home.
When I went up to my room on my bed I noticed a small parchment of paper. Unfolding the paper I smiled at the cursive writing that read.
Congratulations. Wish I could be with you tonight.

Holding the short yet sweet note to my heart I look out the window hoping to catch a glimpse of him. But he isn't there.

It is a quiet morning, very normal here in Abnegation but something feels off.
As Robert, Susan, and I sit at the table eating our breakfast a loud knock came from our back door.
Confused I went to the door and opened it and to my surprise there stood my mother holding a small gun.
"Mom, what's going on?" I ask surprised to see my mother with a gun.
"Get Robert and Susan we have to go now." She commanded.
She doesn't even sound like her normal self.
"What is happening?" I ask more sternly this time.
Before she could answer me the undeniable sound of a gunshot rings through the air followed by a terrifying scream.
The attack is happening right now!
While Susan and Robert run to my mother I bolt up the stairs and grab the bag that Tobias gave me.
Together the three of us run away from the chaos that is surrounding us.
Dauntless members wielding rifles march from house to house dragging the residents out into the streets. Each of them looks like a zombie. Mindless weapons.
We watch in horror as an Abnegation man is shot to death while he tried to run away from a Dauntless man.
But what hurt the most was seeing Christina, my friend, pulling a woman by her hair and shoving her to the ground.
"Come on we have to hurry." My mother said.
We run to a bunch of warehouses and duck into one locking the door behind us.
At the back hidden behind crates and boxes was a large group of Abnegation members including my father, Marcus, Evelyn, Mr. and Mrs. Black and to my surprise Caleb stood there with a look of sadness etched on his face.
When he saw me tears began to flow down his face and he pulled me into a tight hug.
"I'm so sorry Beatrice. I shouldn't have listened to them. I left as soon as I realized." He cries into my shoulder.
"It's okay it wasn't your fault." I whisper as I rub his back.
"Why were they doing that? Why would Dauntless attack us?" Susan sobs.
Suddenly it dawns on me. The transmitters that Four watched being unloaded. That could only mean-
"They are in a simulation. Erudite put them in a simulation they don't know what they are doing." I said.
"How would they put an entire faction under a simulation?" Robert asks.
"Through transmitters that must have been injected into them. Erudite has been dropping them off at Dauntless for a few weeks now."
"How do you know that?" My father asks me.
They all look at me and wait for my answer.
I sigh. I can't keep lying. But I don't have much time to explain right now.
"I'm sorry dad but I don't have time to explain that. I have to go back to Abnegation and help Tori and Four."
Confusion flashes in all of their eyes except for Robert who immediately recognizes the name Four.
"The Dauntless guy who you have been seeing." He said.
My father suddenly looks at me in anger.
"What does he mean seeing?" He asks through clenched teeth.
The air around us suddenly feels very heavy. Keeping myself calm I take a few deep breaths trying to think of the right way to explain this to my dad.
"He's...he's my boyfriend and for the record, he isn't Dauntless. He's Divergent."
As the word slips out of my mouth many of them step back in fear. Like the word itself is a plague and they are scared to catch it. I can't blame them there are a lot of stigmas to the name Divergent.
"And how exactly did you meet this Four character?" My father asks, anger and what almost sounded like betrayal are dripping in his voice.
I sigh again and rub my hands down my face. This is not at all how I wanted then to find out about all of this.
"He and his friend sought out after me after my aptitude test because of my result."
"Which was?" He pressed on further. My dad at this point is like a pit bull. He had latched on and he wasn't letting go.
I look at him my mouth parted slightly wanting to speak but the words just couldn't come out.
Finally, it was my mother who spoke up.
"It was inconclusive wasn't it?" She asks not sounding surprised at all by the allegation she was making.
I look over at her.
"Abnegation, Dauntless, and Erudite. Divergent."
She smiles at me.
"I always had a feeling you were different."
If it were anybody else saying that I probably would have taken offense by the use of the word different. It was a word that many people use as a weapon. But coming from my mother who said it with a big smile on her face It sounds more like a compliment. Almost like she considered me being different from everybody else a blessing. Which I kinda guess it is.
"You're Divergent?" Susan said looking at me as if her brain couldn't process what she had just heard. Robert has the same expression.
"Yes and right now other Divergents are on their way to help the people of Abnegation and I am going to go join them."
I run to a secluded area of the warehouse and dress into my Dauntless black. Holding my bag and my gun I run back to the group.
They all didn't say a word just look at me. Their expressions range from shock, fear, anger, and pride (mostly from my mom).
"Beatrice you can't go out there it is too dangerous." Caleb said.
"It's okay this is what I have been training for." I smirk.
"Please be careful honey." My mother pleaded as she hugged me.
"I will." I whisper back to her.
Taking one last look out at my family I smiled at them and then ran out of the warehouse to find Four.

Blending myself in with the Dauntless soldiers I peered around trying to locate either Four or Tori.
After what seemed like forever I spot Four helping some Abnegation members escape into the forest area.
I run over to him. When he saw me it looked like a massive wave of relief washed over him. And I can't say I didn't feel the same way. He is alive and unharmed.
Grabbing my elbow he pulls me into the house he just evacuated. As soon as the door closed he pulled me close to his chest wrapping me in a tight hug which I gladly allowed myself to be locked into.
His cologne has never smelt so good. His arms never felt safer than at this very moment.
"You're okay." He whispers into my ear. He sounds like he doesn't believe I am here.
I pull his mask up and kiss the spot of skin behind his ear making him shiver just slightly and let out a long sigh.
"I'm here I'm okay." I reassure him.
He pulls back and cups my face between his calloused palms. He pulls my face up and our lips meet for a brief moment.
"The first place I went to was your house and you weren't there. I thought they might have gotten to you."
I could see the genuine fear in his eyes as he told the story. I can only imagine what he felt like going to my house only to find it empty with our half-eaten breakfast still at the table.
"My mother came to get my roommates and me and we went to a warehouse where a bunch of other Abnegation members are hiding."
He smiles then quickly pulls me into another kiss but this one is longer and filled with passion.
When he pulls back he rests his forehead against mine. As much as I want to stay in this moment we have a mission to do.
"We have to go help them." I said.
He nods his head then pulls his mask back down and together we run out of the house and continue to save who we could.

As we were busy clearing another house the front door burst open and two Dauntless soldiers pointed their guns at us.
Four instantly pointed his gun back at them at shot both of them down. He made sure the shots didn't kill them just injured them enough that they wouldn't be able to run after us.
"Run!" He yells at me.
As I turn to run out of the door I hear a loud bang quickly followed by a searing pain in my shoulder. One of the soldiers had managed to lean up and shoot me.
At the sound of my cries, Four stops running and pulls me closer to him.
"You were hit." He said his voice laced with concern.
"Drop your weapons!" One the next batch of soldiers yells at us.
Five more run up to us and soon we are surrounded.
With multiple weapons pointed at us, we dropped our guns. As soon as they hit the ground two soldiers came toward us and grabbed our arms and forced them behind our backs. The action made my wound open more making me squirm in pain. Four tries to get out of the soldier's grip and rush to me but he can't
Side by side we are dragged into one of the houses that appeared to be the base location.
Jeanine herself stands inside in all her glory and looks at us in confusion as her soldiers bring us in.
She nods at the man next to Four and the man swiftly pulls Four's mask off revealing his identity.
"Tobias Eaton," Jeanine seemed genuinely shocked at seeing him. She stares at him for a few more seconds then focuses her attention on me," Beatrice Prior I'm quite surprised to see you in such attire."
"How do you know who I am?"
"I made it my goal to know everything about Abnegation especially its leaders and their families."
"Why are you doing this? Why are you killing these innocent people?" I ask.
"Innocent people," She scoffs as if she was offended by me using that term," Abnegation has been breaking the rules for far too long now. I cannot let that slide any longer. They need to be stopped."
"They are not the enemy here you are." Tobias snaps at her.
" Human nature is the enemy here Mr. Eaton. It is the thing that will destroy everything our founders have built. People such as you and Miss Prior threaten the faction system and Abnegation has been helping harbor you. Suppose you could call it the final straw."
"So you decide that the best course of action is a turning one faction into slaves and making them massacre another." Tobias said.
"Sometimes drastic measures are necessary if you want to achieve peace."
Tobias scoffs.
"This war you have waged won't bring anyone peace all it will do is bring death and destruction."
She shrugs as if everything he was saying meant nothing to her. She is more than willing to risk the deaths of countless people as long as she gets what she wants.
"You won't win Jeanine." I hiss at her.
She walks closer to me in a menacing way. Her cold and calculating eyes stare hard into mine.
"But it looks like I already have."
She looks over at Tobias their eyes locking for a brief moment. She turns back to her companions.
"Bring him with us," She looks back over at me and then proceeds to press her fingers into my wound making me cry out in pain, "Such a shame she is completely useless to us now. You can get rid of her."
Suddenly Tobias breaks free from the soldiers and tries to grab her neck. But they are quick to pull him back and even punch him in the face a few times.
The soldiers who have me locked in their grasp pull me out of the house.
I struggle against them and look back as Tobias is dragged to the same car Jeanine is climbing into.
He looks back over his shoulder and I could briefly make out the words I love you forming on his lips.
Without hesitation, I mouth them back just before I am dragged around the corner to my impending death.
