Chapter 32: Fear Landscape

Al!

Christina gasps and backs up into Will's arms. Will wraps his arms tight around her and pulls her away from the scene. Neither of them wants to see their friend this way.

With my hand over my mouth, I take a few steps forward pushing past all the people.

I watch as another guy runs over with a large black bag. I stare as they roll Al's body into the bag, zip it up, and carry it away.

This is all your fault!

My inner voice screams at me.

I can't stand the scene anymore so I turn on my heels and run away into the dark hallways.

The river of tears pouring out of my eyes cloud my vision essentially making me blind.

"Tris!" A deep voice calls out to me but I am so filled with despair that I don't register it and keep running.

I could just briefly make out the sound of someone running behind me. A large calloused hand wraps around my arm and pulls me against a solid chest.

The person pulls me tight against him and hugs me.

"It's gonna be okay." He whisperers into my ear and I sigh with relief when I recognize Four's voice.

My fingers clutch his black sweater and I bury my face into it.

"No it won't he is dead because of me." I sob into his chest. My voice sounds so childlike but I don't care.

He rubs his hands up and down my back in a soothing technique but it isn't helping.

"It isn't your fault Tris, okay Al chose to walk to the chasm, and then he decided to jump. You can't blame yourself for something that he chose to do."

His words turn my sadness into fury and I push him away with all my strength.

"No Four it is my fault. It is all my fault. He did what he did because I rejected him. He jumped to his death because he thought I was in love with you!" I scream at him.

He looks at me stunned for a few seconds.

"What are you talking about?"

I glare at him and scoff.

"Al thought that I was in love with you. Which is absolutely ridiculous considering that I barely know you."

"You do know me, Tris."

I shake my head.

"No I don't, I don't know where you come from, who your family is, what your real name is. Dammit, Four I don't even know what you look like under that damn thing!"

He clenches his hands into fists and takes a few deep breaths. He walks over to me and grabs my hand and starts pulling me down the passage.

"Where are we going?" I ask.

"You're right Tris you don't know me so am taking you to the one place where I can show you who I am."

I keep quiet the entire time while Four takes me back to the underground city and towards the fear landscape room.

He makes me shut the door behind me while he gets started on the program.

"What are we doing?" I ask.

"I'm gonna take you through my fear landscape." He simply stated while removing his jacket revealing his bulging muscles that were kept underneath.

We sat side by side on the chairs and he carefully injected the serum into my neck. He pops the connectors onto the side of our foreheads and together we are sucked into the simulation.

I wake up with the feeling of a harsh wind snapping across my body. My hands grip around the metal pipe-like thing we are sitting on. I look down at the ground that was laying hundreds of feet below us.

"Fear of heights." I said.

He didn't say a word just nodded.

Together we managed to get into a standing position and silently I follow him across the wire and onto the rood of a nearby building where we were safe.

We crawl into a window that quickly transformed into a box.

Suddenly with a jerking motion and a loud clang, the walls begin to close in on us.

Four and I push our bodies against the walls trying to push them back but it was of no use.

"Fear of confinement." Four said through ragged breaths.

"How did you get this lovely fear?" I ask my voice dripping with sarcasm.

"Upstairs closet in my family home. I used to get locked in there for hours at a time." He said while looking down.

I look over at him in horror. Who would do that to him?

The moving walls squish us closer and closer together until we are basically on top of each other. Four holds me tight as the walls came in.

BAM!

They broke apart and we were standing in a large room. The only thing in the room is a small metal table with a gun resting on it.

I stand back and watch as Four approaches the table and picks up the gun. As soon as he did a girl appears in front of him. She is on her knees and looks up at him with tears in her eyes.

"I don't understand this one." I said.

"As a soldier, you have to follow orders you don't want to," He clicked the bullet into place and held the gun to her head," I have to kill her. But I can't do it unless I look away."

As he speaks it sounds as if his voice wis bouncing off the walls and I watch as the girl changes into me.

Four turns his head to look away and fires the gun.

The now lifeless girl who shared my face is laying on the ground.

Four drops the gun and turns to face me.

The area around us had changed and we are now in a room inside an Abnegation house.

"Why are we in Abnegation?" I ask.

"Your last fear is your worst fear. It lives within the deepest part of your mind."

He turns to look at the stairs leading down into the basement. I look up as Marcus is coming down a long strap-looking thing is in his left hand.

Suddenly it dawns on me.

"Marcus had a son." I gasp.

One he supposedly abused.

Marcus looks at Four with a blank expression.

"Tobias." He said.

Four flinches back in fear. Suddenly five more Marcus' appear around us each holding the same object in their left hands.

A belt.

"Tobias I'm just trying to help you to he better." Marcus said as he got closer and closer.

I look over at Four he is frozen with fear.

Marcus raises the belt over his head.

"No!" I yell as he was about to bring it down.

I jump in front of Four and the belt hits my arm making me cry out in pain.

This snaps Four out of his trance and he rushes over to Marcus and punches him in the jaw.

I gasp as I wake from the simulation.

I look over at Four and silently stare as he pulls his mask off revealing a face I still remember from all those years ago.

"Tobias."

***

I sit in the field looking up at the millions and millions of stars.

Fo- Tobias and I decided to come out here to get some fresh air.

I still cannot believe it is him. After all this time.

He sits next to me in silence almost as if he is ashamed to speak or even look at me.

I shake my head I can't believe the man who is basically an uncle to me could do such a horrific thing and to his child.

I briefly look over at Tobias. I did always think he was an attractive boy but he is an even more attractive man.

His dark hair that he still keeps cut in the neat way Abnegation boys do. His strong jawline, hooked nose, plump lips, and who can forget those blue eyes.

The last two years have really changed him. Not just with his body but his personality. The Tobias I knew was shy and never really spoke unless he absolutely had to. Tobias and Four may share the same body but they are two very different people.

Not being able to stand the silence that was clutching to us I turned to face him.

"Four, four fears." I smile.

He looks over at me.

"Four then four now. I go in there as much as I can but I don't think we can ever lose them."

Silence wraps around us again.

My attention draws to the black ink itching its way up to his neck.

I smile.

"What's your tattoo?" I ask.

He looks down at me again and smiles. A smile then turned into a smirk.

"Do you wanna see it?"

A small part of me is thrilled at the thought of him undressing.

I nod.

He smirkes and shifts to get into a comfortable position. He lifts his shirt off in one swoop revealing the most magnificent piece of art I have ever seen.

The middle of his back is lined with each faction symbol and the rest is covered in patterns.

I drag my finger down onto each symbol making him stiffen under my touch.

"Why do you have all the faction symbols?"

"As a Divergent, we are more than just one thing and that is what I want to be. I want to be brave and I want to be selfless, intelligent and honest and kind,"

He turns around and leans closer to me.

"Well, I'm still working on kindness."

He reaches out and twists a strand of my hair around his finger.

He leans in and touches his lips to mine.

This action sends electricity shooting through my body. I know I shouldn't be doing this but I don't care.

I grip the back of his neck and pull him deeper into the kiss. He wraps his arms around my waist and pulls me flush against him.

When we were both out of breath we pulled back and rested our foreheads against each other.

As if we shared one brain cell we look up into each other's eyes and smile.
