Chapter 25: Visiting Day
Blue eyes. Shining pools of beauty, like the colour of water. All night they plagued my dreams, he plagued my dreams. No matter how many times I tossed and turned, no matter how many times I scolded myself, whispering "Beatrice get a hold of yourself."
He still refused to leave me.
All my wasted efforts led to me giving in and refusing to crawl back under my blanket and let the supposed to be calming action of sleep drag me back into the darkness. Though there wouldn't be any lonely darkness like there normally Is, because he would be there.
I lean against my windowpane, my cheek resting in the dip of my arms. I stifle a yawn as I watch the gleaming sun peek out from the horizon. As time slips on the sun grows gaining more confidence and crawls out from its hiding place chasing the darkness away.
Wonder if Four is watching the sunrise?
No Beatrice stop it.
A soft rap came from my door.
"Beatrice are you up?" Susan asks, by the sound of her groggy voice she must have just woken up.
"Yes."
"May I come in?"
"Of course. "
The handle clicks as she turns it and the door creaks as it is gently pushed open.
Susan walks in with a smile on her face and sits down on the edge of my bed.
"So are you ready for today?" She asks me.
A wave of confusion sweeps over me. What the hell am I missing?
"What is today?" I ask in an embarrassed tone.
She giggles and rolls her eyes.
"It is visiting day!" She smiles.
Visiting day marks the halfway mark of initiation. We spend the whole day in the hall with our families. People in the same faction they were born in will always see their families today. But the transfers might not see their families today because their families see them as traitors. I will see my family today but Caleb might not.
I want to cry as the image of him standing alone wondering if our parents will visit him surfaces in my head.
"Oh, I forgot."
"You excited to see your parents?"
"Susan we see our parents almost every day during training." I laugh.
"I know it's just that is when they have to be instructors this will just be a relaxing atmosphere."
I ponder what she is saying over and over again in my head. I don't understand it but she seems excited so I just smile and nod.
Suddenly her smile fades, the light in her eyes shuts down and she shifts her gaze to her hands.
"What is wrong?" I ask.
She sniffles.
"It's just...... I feel bad for Caleb. He isn't going to have anyone today. He will be alone."
A small tear drips from her eye, trickles down her cheek, and wraps itself around her chin resting there for a few seconds before it drops onto my blanket.
A sigh escapes my lips and I take a seat beside her. I rest my hand on her back, but I only keep it there for a few seconds before pulling away. It was just a small contact, just to let her know that I was there for her.
"I know, I've been thinking about him too. But you know my mother she will try and go see him. And who knows maybe she will and they will chat and have a great time. She will come back and tell us all about his new life."
She stifles back a sob and using the back of her hand wipes away more tears that have escaped her tear ducts.
"I like the sound of that."
"So let's hold onto that thought and we can make it through today."
"Yeah."
And just like that a small smile forms on her pink lips.
"There she is."
She giggles and the smile just gets bigger and bigger, brighter and brighter.
"Breakfast!" Robert yells from downstairs.
On cue, my stomach lets out a loud growl.
Susan looks at me and laughs.
"Come on let's go eat, you clearly need it."
"Yeah, clearly I do."
We both laugh as we stagger down the stairs to the table where hot plates of food were waiting for us.
Robert looks up at us with a confused expression as we enter.
"What's going on?" He asks.
I shake my head.
"Just an exciting day little brother."
"You aren't that much older than me. There was like a two-minute difference. "
"Two minutes or two seconds I am still older."
"But I'm wiser now sit down and eat your food."
Susan rolls her eyes as she sits down and begins to eat her food.
Once we had finished our food we headed out to the meeting hall.
On one side all the Abnegation-born initiate's families are standing waiting, proud smiles tugging at their lips and they stretch their arms out pulling their children into warm embraces.
And on the other, the transfers are standing silently. They twiddle their fingers and wait for their families to come. If they come.
The microphone screeches and we all turn our attention to the stage where Marcus is standing looking down at all of us.
"Good morning and welcome to visiting day. Today is the day to spend with family and I pray that most of you will enjoy that luxury today," We all gave side glances to the transfers, they look like they are going to throw up because of the nerves," Know I don't want to steal any more of your precious time together. Have a wonderful day."
I run to my parents and give them each a big hug.
"My baby how are you did you get some rest?" My mother asks me.
I smile at her.
"Yes, I did."
"Your mother told me what happened, they aren't working you too hard are they?" My father said.
"No dad they are not. I have just been having a hard time sleeping but I have been working on it and I'm all better now. You don't have to worry so much about me."
"You are my child Beatrice I will always worry about you."
"Hope the two of you have been keeping an eye on her." My mom said.
"You don't have to worry Mrs. Prior we won't let anything happen to her." Robert said.
"Yeah what my brother said."
She looks over at Robert and smirks at him.
Loud shrieks of joy filled the air as some of the transfer's families came into the room.
We stand and watch as some of the transfers embrace their families. It is a brief feeling of joy before we see the transfers whose families didn't show up.
Together the three of them left the building. They will be each other's family now.
"So sad." Susan mumbles.
"Are you guys going to see Caleb later?" I ask.
Their smiles drop and their expressions darken.
"Erudite is no longer allowing Abnegation members onto their property." My mom said.
"What!" I yell.
Everyone still in the room turns to look at me but I don't care about that. My thoughts are on my brother who as I feared will be alone today.
Susan who shared that fear looked like she was going to burst into tears.
"I know how that sounds but if that wasn't in place we would go see him."
"I wouldn't. " My father grumbles.
"Andrew this is hardly-"
"It's the truth Natalie, he chose another faction he betrayed this family. You may be forgiving but I am not."
My mother sighs and shakes her head.
"But Andrew-"
"We can discuss this later okay let's not waste a day with our daughter."
My mother sighs again and nods her head.
"Let's all go get some food."Mr. Black said.
"That sounds like a good idea. Let's go." My father smiles.
Together the adults and Robert start leaving the building.
"I knew we shouldn't have gotten our hopes up about him," Susan sniffled," Maybe your dad is right we need to start putting him out of our minds. He left us, betrayed us, we can't keep denying that. We need to move on."
I couldn't believe that Susan was saying this. That always happy, never gave up Susan had been defeated.
But I suppose heartbreak can do that to you.
"Su-"
She doesn't even stay to hear what I am going to say, she just turns on her heels and walks out.
We shouldn't have to give up on him.
But I can't say that, I can't have people look at me weird and start asking questions about the way I think. That will lead to discovery and discovery leads to death.
Not knowing what else to do I follow her.
