Chapter 19: Day One of Training

A soft knock on the door draws my attention away from Marcus.

I have been watching him sort out paperwork for tonight's meeting for nearly two hours. It is a lot of paperwork. I feel bad for him.

"I'm busy!" He yells at whoever is behind the door.

A few seconds go by before the person knocks again.

He sighs in frustration, rubbing his fingers across his furrowed brow. His hand clenches tight around the current sheet of paper he is holding, it crackles as it is slightly scrunched up.

"Come in!" He yells, trying to hide his anger but failing.

The door slowly creaks open and Evelyn walks in, her expression is one of fear.

When he sees that it is his wife Marcus immediately calms down and smiles.

"Sorry to interrupt, but when I got home, I noticed you forgot your lunch, so I brought it over." She said, she holds up a small brown bag.

Marcus walks over to her and she hands him the bag.

"Thank you and sorry for yelling I thought you were Adam."

He leans down and quickly kisses her forehead.

"I understand," She said," Well I better be off I can see you are busy."

Before she can leave he reaches out and taps her arm.

"I was just about to send Beatrice to go and make me some coffee and since you are here you can go help her."

"I know how to make coffee." I say, but it comes out snipper than I mean to and I immediately regret speaking.

Marcus seems angry about the way I spoke to him.

"He likes is a certain way. Come on I'll show you how to make it."

Marcus quietly walks back to his desk and goes back to sorting out his paperwork.

I get up and follow Evelyn to the kitchen.

As we get closer to the kitchen I can hear muffled voices. I soon realize that it is Susan and Robert.

"Just tell her." Susan's voice echoes from the kitchen.

Who is she?

Tell her what?

Damn my natural curiosity!

"How am I supposed to say-"

He trails off when he sees me and Evelyn.

"What are you looking at?" Susan asks.

She spins around and gasps when she sees Evelyn and me.

"Well aren't you guys training hard." I chuckle in an effort to break the awkward air around us.

"Our trainers felt like coffee so we are making some." Susan said.

"That is what we are here for as well." I said.

"Hello, Mrs. Eaton." Robert greets her.

"Hello Robert and Susan," Evelyn smiles," Okay let's make this coffee before Marcus goes nuts." She chuckles, but a small part of her seems afraid.

But clearly, I'm the only person seeing it.

We all lean closer and watch as she demonstrates how to make the perfect cup of coffee. It smells divine so I can only guess that it tastes better.

"Okay, I should go the house needs some cleaning."

"Bye." We all say in unison and we wave at Evelyn.

She waves back as she leaves.

I take the coffee to Marcus and spend the rest of the day watching him do paperwork.

Today is the day I learn that being a politician sucks and I will never do it.

Susan and Robert decide to go visit their parents so I walk home by myself. I'm kind of grateful for that. I enjoy the quiet.

When I reach my house I freeze when I notice the door is slightly open.

We locked it when we left this morning!

I weigh my options on what to do and my courage wins the fight.

I grab a decent size rock and quietly I push the door.

Walking on the balls only my feet I search every room and I find nobody. The only thing I found is a note taped to my pillow.

A big number four on the front.

"Of course, he broke into my house." I scoff.

Unfolding the letter I skim the short message over.

Stiff,

Come to training immediately. Meet me at the spot. Come alone.

~4

Excitement bubbles in me and I rush downstairs. I write a quick note for Susan and Robert telling them that I'm going for a walk then I leave.

People nod at me as I pass and I nod back, trying not to seem suspicious.

It is okay people I am just going for a walk not going to a small city for Divergents for training.

Four is impatiently waiting for me at the spot, as he called it. He didn't say a word just grabbed my arm and started dragging me along.

"Well hello to you too." I roll my eyes at his bruteness.

When we reach the city he leads me into the main building, through the snaking passageways to a large room they made a gym.

He releases his tight grip on my arm and I'm sure he left marks.

I look around at the gym, my jaw has once again been dropped at how amazing this place is.

Four walks away for a second then returns holding some Dauntless clothing.

"Change into these it will be a lot easier to train in."

He shoves the clothing into my hands then walks off to a table and starts doing something.

I head off to a bathroom and lock myself in a stall.

I carefully examine the clothing that had been selected for me. Tight leggings, a t-shirt, boots, and a jacket. A simple Dauntless attire.

I slip out of my layers of grey garments and change into the new outfit.

I go back out and place my Abnegation clothes on a chair.

Four looks up at me, his eyes briefly trail up and down my body. I shy away, this outfit just shows how much of a boy's body I have.

"Let's get started." He said.

"What do I do?"

"We are gonna run." He smirks.

Shit!

After the torturous run and countless stretches, I had to do Four started showing me some basic punches.

"Okay, you try." He instructs.

I walk up to the punching bag, I shift my body into the starting position he showed me earlier. I take a deep breath then swing at the bag. My knuckles sting as they collided with the hard bag and I yell in pain. I look down at them checking for cuts. Of course, I find a few, some are dripping blood.

"Isn't there anything I can tape around my knuckles?" I ask.

"Yes, but when we get into a fight you don't have time to wrap up your hand. Punching at the bag bare-knuckled will strengthen your hand. Now keep punching."

I sigh and did as I was told even though it is painful as hell.

By the end of the night, my knuckles are cut and bruised and my muscles are aching. It's clear that Four is a tough trainer and it isn't going to get easier from here so I have to suck it up.

Like the last time, he walks me to the outskirts of Abnegation and bids me goodnight.

***

I hiss in pain as I clench my hand around the door handle and twist it.

I hope Susan and Robert are asleep.

But sadly they are not.

"Beatrice is that you?" Susan calls out.

"Nope, I'm a robber give me all your possessions!"

"Very funny." She chuckles.

"Okay, so I'm going to go to bed."

But before I could walk away Robert rushes to me and grabs my arm.

"Beatrice what happened to your hand!"

Susan gets up from the sofa and comes over to us. She gasps when she sees my bruised knuckles.

"It's nothing I just knocked it against a......wall."

"A wall?"

Yeah, Beatrice a wall seriously.

"Yes, now I'm gonna get some ice and then go to bed."

"Beatrice-" Robert started.

"Good night."

I rush past them to the kitchen. I take an ice bag for my hand and then rush upstairs.

I didn't even bother changing into my pajamas I just jump into bed and fall asleep.
