FROM DUSK TILL DAWN
To Mahmoud Asgari and Ayaz Marhoni
I was looking towards East
The Heavens bursting in flames.
I bent my head to your lips
As if all my pride was gone.
I saw angels winged of black
Being hanged for their innocence.
We could have been one of them
And it makes me want to bleed.
I heard mermaids off the coast
Singing their grief to the Sea.
I clenched my fists in the dark
But by then, my time was up.
At Dusk we'll fade away
Like clouds of crimson dust.
The night will coil us up
Melting slowly to ash.
At Dawn we'll lay awake
Amid the soundless waves
I've known your lands too well
To be frightened by death.
I saw corpses on the stones
And white lions crawling in chains.
How could this have been your will
If it makes me want to weep?
When the sandglass is reversed
Slipping from your wounded hands
I will reach out to the sun
To swallow your painful scent.
I was looking towards West
Soldiers marching on my grave
Your fingers caressed my chest
As if all my fears were gone.
