A COMPLETE DIVERSION
Spooks' eyes shot open the moment Tyler started to scream. He yanked his hands back like he was on fire, babbling complete nonsense, which then turned into cries of terror. His eyes, which were normally white because of his blindness, were dark red. Blood ran down his cheeks like tears.
Josh, who didn't know what was happening, tried to catch Spooks as he started to walk back without looking. Immediately, he was plagued with images, and he let go as quickly as he grabbed him.
"Let me go!" Spooks yelled, gripping and shaking his head. "Let me go, don't let me-"
"We need to leave right now! The Bishops are coming and- what the hell?" Rose ran in and stopped, a bat in her hand. She sounded out of breath. "Josh, what's going on?"
"He was- he just tried to help," Josh squeaked.
Rose took Spooks' gloves from the table and approached him like he was a rabid animal. He kept shaking, his back hitting the cave wall.
"Neon gravestones," he mumbled. "Neon gravestones. Neon gravestones, Neon gravestones, they're calling out to me. Can't you hear it? It's all I can hear."
Tyler was still asleep, yet his eyes were wide open, his irises carnation red. A scream pierced the air. Josh stumbled back. Rose, who was trying to steady a manic Spooks, shouted for Josh to run.
"I'm not leaving Tyler!" He protested.
"It's finally time, this is the end of an era, the end of us," Spooks babbled, scratching at himself. "A glorious gone, this is a glorious gone. We're all dead! We're going to die, we're all going to die..."
"That's not Tyler!" She yelled. "Get the others out, and find Jason. That's an order, Josh."
Seeing no other option but to do as she said, Josh backed up and ran outside, finding the camp in ruins. Flames licked the red sunrise, casting heat and smoke into the air. Banditos were running, torches in hand, with horses chasing them into circles. Like sheep for the slaughter.
Jason had Clancy's arms over his shoulders, attempting to drag him to safety but barley holding him upright. Blood gushed from a cut in Clancy's side. He looked barely half alive.
"Jason!" Josh shouted.
He caught up to them, hooking Clancy's other arm around him and holding him up to lighten Jason's load. They kept trudging him towards the caves. Blood drained down from Clancy's lips, staining his neck and the collar of his skirt. Whatever got a hold of him did quite a number on him. His shirt was in shreds, barely being held together by the seems.
"Thank fucking God, I thought I'd have to carry this heavyweight champion mother fucker everywhere I went," Jason heaved, his skin spotted with ash. "Jesus, what happened to you?"
Josh shook his head. "It's a long story. Spooks is crazy, Tyler isn't Tyler. Rose is with them. What's going on out here?"
"Longer story," Clancy mumbled. He could barely lift his head to look Josh in the eye. "There are Hazmats crawling every inch of this place. Debby and the other Neons are evacuating the youngest of us to the mountains towards the promised land. We need to leave before Nico and the others get here."
"You can't go anywhere right now, Clancy," Jason said. "Not until I heal you."
Clancy coughed, his legs giving way underneath his weight. He nearly dragged Josh down with him, but Jason caught them both with ease. "I got him. Go help Jenna. She'll need your help protecting the others in the camp."
"O-okay."
He took off once again, finding Jenna battling a masked monster with a sharpened torch. She swung at the monster's legs, ripping through the baggy white fabric that covered it and hitting flesh. The monster roared and grabbed her by her ankle, knocking her to the ground.
Josh ran at full speed, tackling the monster off of her. He stuck his hand under the monster's chin, the air growing hot as a dagger of ice formed in his hand, stabbing right through the mask and into the monster's skull. It wiggled for a few seconds before going limp, blood pouring from the hole.
He didn't have time to turn around before another monster was on top of him, this one covered in blue fabric instead of white. The mask had large black circles in place of eyes, the mouth of the mask bright red and bulging out, like a gas mask.
Before it could hurt him, Jenna came up from the side and stabbed her torch through its chest, kicking it off of him. She grinned and held her hand out to Josh, who gladly took it.
"What would you do without me?" She winked.
Josh rolled his eyes. "Don't get cocky now. The big bosses aren't even here yet."
Her face turned solemn. "What's wrong?"
"Everything. Come on, we need to protect our family."
Josh turned, freezing when the figure standing behind him lurched forward and stabbed a knife deep into his collarbone. His eyes went wide, grabbing the hand to keep in in place. Jenna didn't move, her jaw dropped in shock.
The knife twisted, making Josh's legs weak with pain. Carnation red eyes stared him down, no familiarity to be seen. Josh pulled him to ground as he finally fell to his knees. Tyler pulled the knife out, stabbing him against in his stomach.
Jenna screamed, but Tyler just glared at her and she collapsed. Who field went silent except for the ringing in Josh's ears.
"Tyler?" Josh crowed.
"Shhhh," he whispered. It wasn't Tyler voice. It was much deeper, much more like static. This was Keons. "Hello, Josh. It's finally a pleasure to meet."
A/N:
Since this story is coming to a close soon, I wanted to collect questions for a Q&A. You can ask me whatever questions you have here or anywhere else on this story, whether or not they pertain to the story, and I'll answer all of them after the final chapter. There will be an epilogue, but that will be posted after the answers.
