Chapter 30: The End of the Line
"They probably have not removed my handprint from the system yet, so we're depending on that to get into the building. We knew the locations of security points and cameras and were planning on disabling them once we were in. Vanessa and Kyle will be in charge of that." The two of them nodded. We were going through the plan one last time a few blocks away from the building.
"Christopher and Hugh, you guys are going to take care of the equipment. Make sure everything is destroyed." Kyle continued where I left off.
"I'll head to the room where all the paper is and gather as much of them as I can, if not all of them." I finished off.
They all nodded back at me and we all set off in different directions. I pulled my hood further down my head and began to head towards the building as well. As I reached the building, I slowed to a walk and pulled my hood off my head, letting my hair flow free. There were no security standing at the main doors. This should have set warning alarms in my head but I pushed on.
I heard a slight rustle behind me and I glanced backwards to see Vanessa following several feet behind me. She gave me a silent nod before disappearing into the night again without a trace of sound.
I placed my hand on the handle of the door and pushed it open. I stood on the doorway holding the door open. It was completely dark inside. I usually stayed down in the labs this late at night so I wasn't used to seeing this building completely dark. I let my eyes adjust to the darkness as I felt a small gush of wind as the others entered. Christopher walked up towards the door calmly. The two of us were at the building so it would be suspicious if we were acting too quiet.
Once I was sure that everyone was in, I let the door swing close. Vanessa and Hugh were already far ahead of us, staying close to the walls, climbing up and around at times to disable any cameras that were position there. We sprayed their gloves and the souls of their shoes with adhesive spray so they would be able to climb around with ease.
Hugh was right behind them, making sure to avoid being within the range of a camera that is still functioning.
Everything seemed to be going well. But I didn't notice the small signs that things weren't going as well as I thought they were.
As we reached the elevator at the back of the building that lead to the labs. The elevator's bell sounded, shocking all of us, as the doors opened. The brightness from the light in the elevator temporarily blinded my eyes as my heart rate began to quicken and adrenaline pumped through my system.
Were we caught?
The echoing sound of heels clicking against the floor sounded as the person in the elevator walked out of it, stopping a few feet in front of us. I opened my eyes and blinked in rapid succession to get my vision back to normal.
Mrs. Miller stood in front of us, one hand on her hip. "I've been expecting you, Amelia."
I felt my mouth run dry.
"I honestly didn't think you would find out so quickly. But then again, I guess the reason that you did was because of little miss traitor." Just as she said that, the elevator bell ringed again and Dillon walked in dragging a bloodied body of Isabelle.
He tossed her so that she sprawled out at Mrs. Miller's feet. The rise and fall of her chest confirmed that she was still alive, but she was definitely horribly injured and needed to be treated.
"Ungrateful woman. Even after I had saved her, she still went ahead and tattled." Mrs. Miller shook her head and tsked.
The others around me shared the same reaction. Shock. Even though I held a small expectation that Mrs. Miller was behind the experiments, I still didn't want to believe it.
She seemed to have noticed our shock. Her lips curled into a mocking smile, "Do you not believe that this is my true self? Are you perhaps thinking this is all a joke?"
I stayed silent. Mrs. Miller shook her head and clicked her tongue, "My dear, Amelia. How naïve can you be?"
"Why?" I heard Vanessa mutter beside me.
"Why? Why would I do all this?" Mrs. Miller asked back, her usual soft voice was hard and mocking. "Personal satisfaction, of course. After all, my own husband cheated on me with my very own sister. Who is, your very own mother, Amelia."
I felt like an arrow had shot through me with that information, and I stiffened. Mrs. Miller sighed, "My poor brother-in-law. Poor me. Of course, when I heard that you had run from your house and was found by Syndicate 45, I knew just what use I can put you too." The cruel grin returned to her face.
"So, I began my plan. I sent my boys to start a robbery, the death of that past leader of yours, the bombing," she stopped to let out a maniacal giggle, "Oh for the bombing, I even managed to use that little girl's own uncle to do them!" She sighed, her grin blooming into a full blown sadistic smile.
"Brain washing is the best, isn't it?"
My brain was running at a hundred miles per hour. Missing pieces clicking into place as every single past event that had happened since I joined the Syndicate finally formed one image.
"All the things I had to do, just so I can use you as a guinea pig. I couldn't just brain wash you because, well, firstly where's the fun in that? But more importantly, you brain washed would just make you a less effective guinea pig."
My eyes flickered to Dillon who was standing silently in his spot, staring forwards. Just forwards, not at any single person. A sudden realization smashed into me. He was brain washed as well.
"I did use Dillon, my own son, as a guinea pig during the early phases of the project." She sighed, "but it failed. The chemicals that we added to your system won't work on him anymore. The chemical I used on him back then has completely depleted his chances of it ever working on him. So, I'll just use him for other things. He just got brain washed a few minutes ago so he's still a little dazed, poor baby."
"All this, just to satisfy yourself? How selfish can you be?" Hugh said, breaking out of his frozen stance.
"Selfish? No, I'm just claiming what will soothe my heart after I've been betrayed by the two people I trusted most."
"But why this?" Vanessa asked.
Mrs. Miller tilted her head backwards slightly and looked down at us. "Why not?" She raised a hand and snapped her fingers. The other members of Syndicate 42 dropped down from the ceiling. I had not noticed them at all.
All of them were just like Dillon, eyes glazed over as they stared at nothing at all. A chill ran down my spine as my heart began to thud in my heart, my pulse echoing in my ears.
"Kill them."
At that command, I tensed up completely as the five members of Syndicate 42 rushed forwards, one fighting each of us. Dillon rushed towards me, fist ready to make impact. I dodged readily and delivered my own kick to his side.
It might be because of the experiments but fighting him was easier than ever. He stumbled for a while, clutching his side and I did a quick survey.
Everyone else was on par with their opponent, though Christopher was having a little trouble. He wasn't trained in fighting.
I felt the hair at the back of my neck prickle as I whirled backwards to see Dillon try to attack me again. I let him past me before grabbing his attacking arm and twisted it behind him, elbowing the back of his neck with my other arm.
He fell onto the floor, groaning in pain before pushing himself back up. I tsked in annoyance. That was supposed to make him black out for a while.
I heard a click of metal and spun around to see Mrs. Miller pull out a gun and point it at Christopher.
Warning bells screeched in my head as I moved without thinking.
The sound of a bullet being fired was heard. But the only thing I heard was a deafening ring echoing in my ears, the rapid beat of my heart. My mouth was wide open in a silent scream as a burning sensation traveled through my back and lodged in my abdomen area.
I was standing in front of Christopher, who stared at me with a terrified expression. I felt myself falling forwards, my vision fading to black. The last thing I heard before my hearing completely disappeared was Christopher screaming out my name.
The last thing I saw before my life faded to black completely was Christopher's crying face.
Darkness welcomed me.
