Chapter 2: Syndicate 45 of Aestrea
For the past few days, Lindsey made it her job to stay with me the entire time making sure I didn't go anywhere. In the end, I gave up to her stubbornness. I also met the rest of the Syndicate; Apart from Vincent, Lindsey, and Vanessa, there was Max, Kyle, and Hugh. Vanessa - the proclaimed "Mother" of the group - made sure to cook nutritious feasts every day to help rebuild my strength and Lindsey regularly changed my bandages.
"Amelia, you up for training?" Kyle called from the opposite side of the hallway as I approached the door to my room. I paused to think, turning to look at the clock hanging on the wall. I turned back to Kyle and nodded before going into my room.
Kyle - who was playfully assigned the title of "Trainer" by Vincent - had agreed to my request for him to teach me some form of martial arts so that I can protect myself on my own. It took a while to convince Lindsey and Vanessa but they agreed after I almost hacked my own head off when looking through their weaponry room.
After I changed into a set of sports clothes Lindsey had lent me, I went down to the training room. It was a room that was two storeys high connected to the main building. There was a control room in one of the walls with a window to see into the training room. The room itself is all white and has many functions that could be activated via the control room.
Vincent was waiting for me when I entered the room. Well, waiting for me upside down. Leader of the syndicate? More like monkey of the syndicate. I can see why Lindsey calls him animal names. I looked up at Vincent, who had his feet planted on the ceiling and was dangling down, his black hair spiking down towards the floor.
I heard a knock come from the control room and saw Kyle. "You're going to focus on stamina today, Amelia. I've set the room to stick mode which means that you guys can walk or run on any of the walls and ceilings."
That explains how Vincent is dangling from the ceiling like a bat.
Kyle continued, "Your task is to try and catch Vincent. Your time limit is four hours. So we're stopping once four hours is up or when you catch Vincent. Or at least tap him on the shoulder. Whichever comes first. Start whenever you feel like."
"Oh and you might want to use gloves." Vincent advised from his position, throwing a spare pair of black gloves down at me. Why? But I didn't question and just pulled them onto my hands.
I stared at my newly covered hands - these gloves are pretty big - and then back at Vincent who hasn't moved from his position on the ceiling. Well then. How should I do this.
I placed a foot on the wall and tried walking up, using my hands as support so I don't fall back. But it was harder to move than I thought. The wall must be ultra sticky. I have to pull my leg really hard for it to unstick to the wall. Let me experiment a little more.
Once I reached a part of the wall that was high enough, I tried to jump off the wall to reach Vincent but my leg didn't have enough strength and I fell the moment my foot detached with the wall. So this is the meaning of this exercise. To build strength in my legs and arms. I wonder if this training is also the reason why they can jump from building to building.
I spun around and stuck my hand onto the wall to stop myself from falling even further.
"Okay, I'm going to start moving around too. There's too much blood going into my head." I looked over at Vincent who had started to sway in his spot. "Come an' get me!" He yelled before he swung onto the wall opposite mine before running sideways and jumping onto another wall and repeat.
I sucked in a huge breath before letting it back out, steeling my nerves before I sped my way up the wall. The faster I made myself run, the easier it was to move around. But it still leaves a burning sensation in my legs.
I tried jumping again, my arm stretching as far as it could and just barely managed to attach itself the the next surface. I pulled myself in and planted my feet on the wall. A grin crept up my face. Adrenaline ran through my veins. I was enjoying this. I haven't had this much fun in a long time.
Grunting, I continued to run, eyes tracking Vincent's movements. At my speed, there's no way I'll be able to catch Vincent. And although this is uber fun, I don't have enough stamina to keep this up for too long. But... I'm not going to stop trying now.
My grin bloomed into full smile and I sped up as much as I could before I jumped towards the wall Vincent was aiming towards too. While mid-air I closed my eyes and enjoyed the feeling of jumping through the air. I can get used to this.
I snapped my eyes open and landed with a thud on the wall. Vincent landed a second after me and immediately jumped to the next wall. "Keep trying!" He yelled out as he flew from wall to wall. Oh I'm not giving up yet.
I continued to chase Vincent around the room. He jumped towards the ceiling, pushed off and landed on the floor before jumping right. I followed him but jumped left instead, intercepting him as he jumped towards my wall in the next moment. He landed right next to me but did a flipped backwards so that he ended up below me and continued towards the next wall. I think I've figured it out.
My stamina has already been depleted but I was still running on adrenaline. I can't feel my legs anymore though. Finally, I felt the consequences catch up to me as my legs trembled beneath me and collapsed. I still need to catch Vincent.
From my spot, I watched Vincent jump from wall to wall. For the past who knows how long, I've realized that Vincent jumped in the same pattern from wall to wall. Floor, right, left, ceiling, floor, back, front, ceiling, repeat. I was currently on the right wall and Vincent was on the left. Alright then.
Using my remaining energy, I untied my shoelaces and pushed myself to the top of the wall and stayed there watching Vincent. He normally lands in the same spot but I can swing if he moves sideways.
The second before Vincent makes contact with the right wall, I slid my hands out of the loosely fitted gloves and my feet out of my untied shoes, allowing me to fall towards him. I had both my arms stretched out and as I fell. He moved towards the left. I stretched out my left arm further towards him, tapping him on the shoulder before continuing down the the floor. I slapped my left hand onto the wall to stop me in my free fall. The sudden stop was a bad idea as I felt a yank on my shoulders as I stopped.
I didn't let the sudden strain bother me and swung my legs to gain momentum and swung myself off the wall and onto the floor, where I immediately collapsed. I think a layer of skin got peeled off. The walls were definitely sticky. As I pushed off the wall, I felt a layer of skin being peeled off as well. Vanessa and Lindsey are going to get angry.
"You have pretty good reflexes." Kyle said as he walked in from a hidden door that lead to the control room. "And your final plan was quite smart. Although sticking your hand onto the wall wasn't the best idea." He eyed my hand where bloody spots started to appear.
I waved it around, "It'll heal." That's what I tell myself after every injury.
"Yeah but I don't think the injuries Linz and Nessa are gonna deal to us will heal." Vincent said with a shudder. I raised an eyebrow, I know they're going to get mad but I don't think they'll be that mad.
"Anyways, let's go get that cleaned up and bandaged." Kyle said, pulling my arm over his shoulder and hoisting me up. Vincent followed and draped my other arm over his shoulder. With the support, I tried to get some feeling back into my legs. Wow they're cramped up.
"What happened?!" Vanessa asked the moment we walked through the door back into the main building. Well that was fast. I looked behind her and saw Lindsey standing by the couches with her arms crossed and a displeased look on her face.
"Nessa, at least give them some time to breathe before you pounce on them." Max said as he walked around the corner of the wall. We walked over to the plush, velvet sofa and Lindsey began to treat my hand. Vanessa followed and opened her mouth as if to begin to chastise us but a loud alarm sounded in the house. Saved by the bell I guess. It beeped once and the lights turned off as a hologram of a lady appeared on the walls.
"Greetings, members of Syndicate 45, there is a new mission for you."
So this is how they receive their missions. I thought as Lindsey continued to wipe and bandage my hand while listening to the lady. A loud thud came from upstairs as a door opened and Hugh's voice came screaming, "Guys! Can we please ask the people in charge of home decor to NOT put those holograms in the bathrooms? I can't pee properly while she's talking!"
Vincent burst out laughing as the lady continued to talk, "There has been a series of bank robberies going around Sectors 2 and 4. Which each robbery, the amount of money being stolen increases. We would have used our surveillance cameras to track him down but before every heist, the robber would cut off the electricity supply so there would be no camera footage and no way for the workers in the banks to contact the police. Your task is to capture this criminal before the situation gets too out of hand. More information will be sent to the usual location. Thank you."
And with that, the hologram disappeared and the lights in the house turned back on. "Alright fellows and fellas, let's gather in the meeting room." Vincent said with a clap. Is that the room next to the med room?
I followed them upstairs while testing the bandages by flexing my hand. It was the room next to the medical room and it was opened the same way. Vincent placed his hand on the rectangle and waited for the system to scan his hand.
The meeting room had a rectangular tangle and several whiteboards aligned along the wall. This doesn't seem like much for a meeting room. As everyone gathered in, Vincent flipped the switch and sent the room into darkness. The table then lit up along with the walls.
"The table and walls in this room are interactive so they'll respond to your commands accordingly." Max explained as Lindsey moved towards the table. I watched her tap around the table before sliding her hands away from each other as if enlarging something. Where does all this technology come from?
"Here's the information they sent us." Lindsey said and everyone gathered around the table. I waited off the the side, slightly peeking over Lindsey's shoulder. Should I get involved or not?
Hugh whistled, "Started off in sector two with 100,000 FRC and the most recent one was 3 billion FRC?"
"It seems like he's going back and forth between Sectors 2 and 4 too." Max added in.
Hmm. I leaned in more to get a better look of the information given. Alternating robberies between Sectors 2 and 4, started at 100,000 FRC and increased by that same amount with each robbery. It's around the same amount of time before each robbery and only banks of two different companies are being targeted. Apparently every time the next robbery is over a week later, someone dies during the robbery. It's the bigger banks that are more targeted but there were occasional robberies in smaller banks too. There's a pattern here.
"What's the pattern?" Lindsey asked, turning to face me. I jumped, I said that out loud?
"There are two people performing the robberies. Not one."
