Chapter 13: Truth or Deception?

The hoverboard slowed down automatically as we neared Sector 12. I took my foot off the pedal and let the hoverboard come to a rest on top of a building within Sector 12 by itself.

Woah.

Sector 12 was completely different from the other Sectors. I knew that living conditions got worse from Sector 1 to Sector 12 but I didn't expect the difference to be this big. All the buildings were old and dusty brick buildings, compared to the clean concrete buildings and shiny glass buildings closer to Sector 1. On a few of the buildings, there were cracks along the walls and green moss that had started to grow.

I got off the hoverboard and set it to camouflage on top of the building. I crouched down at the edge of the building and looked over at the people below. The roads were dusty and cracked and almost deserted. There were some kids who were playing along the road but that was it. The recent attacks must have set them all on the edge.

I felt out of place in my monochrome outfit. Everyone's clothes in this sector was washed out, baggy, and completely ragged. I pulled out the tablet and turned it on. Selecting the GPS option, I inputted the address of the suspects and followed it, jumping from building to building. Trying to catch as little attention as possible. There aren't that many people on the streets anyways.

A small beep sounded from the tablet as I reached the destination. I turned the tablet off and slid it into my pants' pocket. They live on the top floor. Let's see, how should I do this. I didn't bring any other equipment with me.

Just as I was about to try sliding down the pipe, I heard a loud, strong female voice shout out, "Stop picking on them and go be stupid somewhere else."

Whoever said it caught my attention and my eyes zeroed in on a group of people in the center of the road. Curious, I jumped to another building that was slightly lower and jumped onto the ground from there. It was a group of boys and they were surrounding something, or someone.

I stood near the back and peered over their shoulders the best I could. They were beating up two girls in the center of the circle. Anger rose inside of me and I tapped on the shoulder of one of the boys. He turned around with an annoyed expression, as if he was annoyed at me for disturbing his 'fun'. I scowled and punched him in the face. My fist made contact with his nose and I heard a satisfying crunch. He shrieked, cradling his nose.

"What was that for?!" He screamed. I reached into my pocket and pulled out a small card. Tapping on it once, my Syndicate ID buzzed into existence. At the sight of it, the boy's face paled and immediately ran the other way. The other boys followed behind him blindly. I only watched after them in amusement. I was not expecting that reaction.

"Mia are you okay?" The older girl asked. I turned to look at the two of them as I heard the little girl sniffle.

"Don't you worry, big sis here won't let those meanies hurt you. Okay?" Another sniffle.

"Okay then, go on home." The older girl released Mia from her hold and pushed her towards the building I was on top of earlier.

They stood up and the older girl watched the little girl run towards the building before disappearing indoors. She then turned to me with a bright smile. "Thanks so much for the help there! The name's Cossette. You?"

Cossette. I remembered the images that I saw in the meeting room. This girl is the eldest daughter of the family of suspects. She doesn't seem like a bad person. She's even a victim of bullying. And she's a lot shorter than I thought she would be. Cossette's height reached right under my chin.

My concentration was broken by Cossette who had come extremely close to my face, looking straight into my eyes. I raised my eyebrows slightly in response. She grinned and leaned back onto her heels. "Just making sure your mind is still with us."

I shot her a weird look. She continued to stare at me until she prompted me again, "So your name is...?"

I blinked at her, "Amelia."

"Oohh that's a pretty name! Last name?"

I shook my head. Cossette hummed and began swaying on her feet. "Same here. Everyone in Sector 12 doesn't have a last name. Our last names were 'revoked' when the Sectors were first divided and ordered. Strange right?" That's definitely strange. Why would they do that?

Cossette gave me a look over, "From what you're wearing, you don't live in Sector 12 do you? And how did you make the meanies leave? Magic? I believe in magic. I think magic is real and that as long as we believe in it, some magical miracle might happen. Though people tell me I'm stupid because I think that." She gave a sheepish smile.

"But still, I think it's nice to believe in things. Miracles do happen! People say that my smallest brother is a miracle. He nearly died when Mama was giving birth to him but he still lived!" She paused. "Sorry am I rambling?"

I nodded. Not that I really mind though.

Cossette shot me another sheepish smile, sticking her tongue out. "Sorry, I tend to ramble a lot. You either get used to it or get annoyed to it. It's always one of the two."

I waved off her comment, "Don't worry about it."

"You don't talk much though, do you?" She asked, giggling slightly. I shook my head in response.

Cossette laughed, "I get the feeling we'll be great friends!" I raised my eyebrow at her again and she laughed even harder.

"Wait, wait, how do you do that?" She asked, still breathing heavily from laughing. She then tried to move her eyebrows but either raised both her eyebrows or scrunched up her entire face. She burst out laughing again. "Oh well, guess it's one of the many mysteries of the world!"

Actually, I think it's genetics... I'm not sure myself.

"So what exactly did you do to make them leave?" She asked again. I pulled out the card again and showed her.

She gasped in a very dramatic way. "You're part of the Syndicates? That's so amazing! I've been thinking of maybe joining a Syndicate since like you get paid and all that right? But I also don't want to leave my family to train and I really just can't handle anything heavy duty... or exercise in general. I'd really rather just spend everyday with my family instead of training. Although it does help the rest of the country... still I'd rather be selfish and just stay with my family... although I would also be helping my family if I joined the Syndicate since I would get paid... but I wouldn't see them as often.. I think?"

Cossette sighed, "See, this is one of the topics that will just get my mind rolling and I'll be jumping back and forth for pretty much eternity until I forget about it and start thinking about something else and... whoops, I'm rambling again." I tilted my head as I looked her, a small whisper of a grin on my face.

"So will you be visiting Sector 12 again?" She asked, her tone much more mellow than it was before.

I paused to stare at her before I nodded. Since the mission does take place here.

Cossette gave me a bright smile. "Yay! It actually does get somewhat lonely around here. Especially recently. As you can see, this place isn't the happiest of places. So I stay as happy as I can to make up for it!"

I felt my expression soften. She's a really good person. Why would she be a suspect of the bombings?

Right on cue, a loud explosion came from the distance. A large cloud of dark black smoke rose into the air, debris flew and screams could be heard. I turned to look at Cossette to see what her reaction was.

She was staring at the falling debris and black smoke at the explosion, hands clasped together beneath her chin and her eyes were filled with worry.

As the sound of crashing debris died down, Cossette sank to her knees, clasping her hands tighter together. Her knuckles were white. "They always come in twos." She muttered, fear expressed on her face.

I froze up. "Twos?" I asked, urgency evident in my voice.

Cossette nodded. "After one explosion, there's usually another explosion on the opposite side of the Sector of where the first one happened. I'm scared. The next explosion might be around this area."

I frowned and surveyed the area. I'll go look around then. I turned back to Cossette, pulling her back up into a standing position. "Find shelter."

She stared at me for a second, before nodding and running into the building that she probably lived in. I ran towards one of the shorter buildings and used the walls and my momentum to push myself upwards. I ran a few meters before grabbing onto the edge of the top of the small building. I pulled myself up before running towards a taller building. One by one, I made my way back up to the tallest building in the area.

Let's see. I should go get my hoverboard first. I took off again, jumping my way back to the original building to retrieve my hoverboard. As I landed on the building, I commanded, "Activate. Release camouflage mode."

The hoverboard seemingly re-appeared where I left it in a ripple of light. I got onto the board and gave commands to take off. In the sky, I moved around the Sector, looking for anyone that may be acting in a suspicious manner. If the bomber is on foot, it would take them a while to get from the exploded building to their next destination. But the streets are now flooding with people who ran away from the explosion. How can I find one suspicious person in this crowd?

I hovered in the sky for a bit, thinking about my next step. They might be carrying a bag. A bag to put the bombs and other items in. Other people may not be carrying a bag since they would have been in a hurry to escape.

I started circling the crowd in the sky. Strangely enough, none of them have spotted me yet. I am pretty high up. What other information was I given? The bombers are only destroying buildings that are set for demolition!

I made my way to the nearest building and landed. I took out my tablet again and searched for all buildings that were set for demolition in Sector 12. The one that was just bombed had a flashing orange dot over it, the ones that have already been bombed had a bright red dot and the others that have not been demolished yet had a light green dot.

And the buildings that are opposite to the one that just exploded is... There's only one building in that area set for demolition. It had to be that building. Hovering back up to the sky, I made my way towards that building, adrenaline beginning to pump throughout my system. This may not be the smartest thing to do. Facing a bomber head on with barely any weapons. But I can't just sit back and do nothing.

I left my hoverboard in camouflage mode in a building close to the building that has the highest probability of being bombed. I walked in with caution. I kept the noise I made to a minimum and stuck close to the walls. Are they here yet? No, I got here pretty fast because I was on a hoverboard. Unless they came here by car, then they shouldn't have gotten here yet.

I leaned against a wall and peeked over the side of it to make sure it was clear. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up. Footsteps. They were coming from behind me. I spun around on my heels, my hair flying in all directions. A person dressed in black from head to toe appeared from the corner, face covered by a black cloth, and held a small object in hand.

Acting on instinct and adrenaline, I rushed forward as my right hand reached to my back to retrieve my dagger. I stashed my dagger on the back of my belt. It was the best place to put for me to get it easily. Spinning the dagger slightly in my hand, I made slicing motions, jolting the person who stepped backwards to avoid being sliced and stabbed.

Regaining his balance, he tossed the small black ball in his hand in my direction. I jumped out of the way just in the nick of time. The ball exploded into a fury of concrete and dust as it hit the floor behind me. A small bomb?

I turned back to look at the person who was holding more bombs in his hands. I need to find out who that person is. As the bomb balls assault continued, I tried to make my way close to him again. But I had to keep dodging the bombs that he threw at me. I didn't want any injuries. Vanessa would kill me herself.

There was a sudden pause in the bomb attacks that caught me off guard. He's run out! He was turning to pull out more bombs out of his back behind him. Like I'll let you do that. I took this chance to run towards him, knife out and ready.

He anticipated my attack and leaned towards the side to avoid being stabbed but the cloth on his face got caught on my knife and was ripped off. But before I could get a good look of his face, he dropped the back of bombs he was holding and pulled his shirt up and covered as much of his face as he could. One small white ball rolled out of the back he dropped and it exploded in a mess of white smoke.

When I could see through the smoke and it was starting to die out, the man was already gone. Along with the bag of bombs. I tsked. He got away.

But at least I got some more information. And as for the suspected family. Cossette definitely can't be a suspect. She was with me when the first explosion happened and the worry on her face was genuine. Unless she was acting and pretending the whole time to distract me. She could have known I was with the government and did all this as an act to throw me off. She could have planned to delay my movements so I don't stop the first bomb and then lead me here to finish me off. But she really doesn't seem like that kind of person. All her words and reactions resonated with me and it all seemed really genuine.

I sighed as I got back to where I left my hoverboard. I guess I'll go home and tell them what I found out.
