KNEEL
The man screams at the crowd and we slowly go to our knees.
"Is not this simpler? Is this not your natural state?" He asks, "it's the unspoken truth of humanity, that you crave subjugation, "he starts to walk into the crowd, "The bright lure of freedom diminishes your life's joy in a mad scramble for power, for identity. You were made, to be ruled. In the end, you will always kneel."
Grandpa slowly stands.
"Not to men like you," he says, looking to the man firmly.
"There are no men like me."
"There are always men like you."
He's right.
I stand beside him, clutching his arm.
"And there will always be someone to stop you," I say inclining my chin.
The man grins, pointing his staff at us.
"Look to your rebels people," he speaks to the crowd, "let them be an example."
I close my eyes tight, prepared to die, as I her the blast come from his staff.
Something lands in front of us and the sound of something hitting off of metal makes me open my eyes.
The man falls to the ground with a groan as Captain America stand in front of us.
"You know," he starts, "the last time I was in Germany and saw a man standing above everybody else, we ended up disagreeing."
"The soldier," the man chuckles as he gets to his feet, "a man out of time."
"I'm not the one who's out of time."
A jet hovers over us, a gun deployed from underneath it.
"Loki," I woman's voice says, "drop the weapon and stand down."
The man, Loki, fires his weapon at the ship and the jet barely maneuvers out of the way just as the Captain throws his shield at the man.
The crowd begins screaming and racing away again and I'm knocked down, accidentally pulling grandpa down with me.
He groans and I look up at him.
He hit his head on the side walk.
"No," I scramble up to his head, moving it to lay in my lap, "you're gonna be okay. It's gonna be okay, papa, I promise."
Warm tears run down my face at my own lie. I know he's not going to be okay.
"You need to go," he says weakly, "leave me. Get out of here."
"I'm not going anywhere," my voice comes out thick as I cradle him in my arms, "I'm staying right here."
I brush his thin hair back, caressing his head, trying to comfort him.
"I'm not going anywhere," I repeat, holding him tighter.
"Be brave," he whispers as the commotion continues around us,"be brave."
He stares blankly at me, the life in his eyes leaving.
"No," I sob, "no!"
I hold him closer, crying as the last of the crowd runs away.
Loud music starts to play from the jet and Iron Man flies in, blasting Loki and landing not far from where I sit.
"Make a move, Reindeer Games," he says, aiming at the murderer.
Captain America stands beside the other hero and anger boils within me as I stare at man sitting before them.
I get to my feet, fists balled.
"You killed him," I scream, "you bastard!"
I rush him, tackling him to the ground as I punch him, claw him, anything I can think of.
Someone pulls me off of him, dragging me away from him.
"Oh I like her," he grins mischievously, wiping some blood from his lip.
I scream.and try to run at him again, but strong arms hold me back.
"I'm gonna kill you, you fucker!"
"Calm down," Captain America says, still holding me back.
"Let me go!"
"Can't do that, Wild Child," Iron Man still aims at Loki.
"I'm not a fucking child!" I scream, "let me go!"
He still doesn't release me, and my anger reaches its peak.
I shift, hooking my leg behind his and kneel quickly as I throw him over my shoulder, making him land on his back.
"Holy shit," Iron Man takes a step away from me just as I go for Loki again.
The Captain grabs my ankle, tripping me up.
"Sorry, kid," he says as I groan, trying to get back up.
Something hits me upside the head and everything goes black.
