Reason Two <3

Eva Adams used to hate hospitals.

She used to hate the sharp clinical atmosphere dominating the wards; likewise, she used to loathe the white walls presenting a relentless feel - one where time stretched on with the stark, white cascading walls.

That all took a u-turn when hospitals made her realise something. The heart monitor that either threatened to be a reassurance, or a ticking time bomb taught her a lesson. It opened her eyes to a whole new perspective. One she had been blind to before.

That was when Eva Adams found that amongst her undying passion for pure, hospital hatred, there also lodged the fear that if that monitor stopped tracing a heart, that hospital would represent and confirm her thoughts of hospitals being the finality between death or life.

When he lay there ashen-faced, soft hair and dry lips, Eva knew if he died, so would her soul. When his eyes fluttered open, irises reflecting drowsiness, and hands numb from the air conditioning, Eva knew hospitals were a place where lives were saved. She acknowledged that not everyone powered through encounters with death, but she knew one thing for sure.

Her Mr Fanceh was a survivor. He was a fighter - brimming with strength. He just didn't know it.

Sitting there reflecting on how her life had panned out with a warm bundle snuggled against her chest, Eva shifted about in her uncomfortable hospital gown. Although it was a calming shade of turquoise, the crispness of the material didn't settle well with her soft skin.

The bed sunk beneath her as her Mr Fanceh sat down beside her.

"May I?" he softly murmured, planting his lips against her cheek.

She laughed. "Why, she's just as much your daughter as mine," Eva explained whilst gently handling their one-day old daughter to her husband, Damien.

Damien cradled their daughter in his arms, an adorable smile competing with the cuteness of their child. He sighed, one indicating contentedness.

"You know, everything began here," he said rocking their girl smoothly.

"If I'm being honest with you, I thought everything was going to end here," Eva reminisced with a shudder.

"I couldn't have let that happen," Damien began, but he was cut off by Eva.

"You had no control over that,"

"But my spirit did," Damien finished off for her adamantly.

Eva looked to contradict, but she was interrupted by an amiable voice.

"Mr Fanceh, or should I say Lover Boy, aren't you going to introduce me to your gorgeous baby?" Serena sang out, skipping into the room.

Damien craned his head, his eyes lighting up to see his wife's cheery cousin. She'd long gotten over the grudge he'd remained naive for so long about Eva's love for him.

"Ah, I see the eight-foot tall purple dinosaur has come to visit us!" he exclaimed in mock excitement.

"You're Barney in disguise?" Eva squealed in dismay, "And all my life I've been looking in museums in hopes of meeting Barney the purple dinosaur," she finished in a sad tone.

Serena stifled a laugh as she gestured for Damien to hand the baby to her. Reluctantly he did so.

"Enough with the sarcasm dear cousin. Now tell me, what is this precious gems name?" Serena demanded eagerly.

Eva smiled a smile filled with delight. This was the moment she had been waiting for. Her husband wasn't to know but as soon as she knew the gender of her baby, she knew what she was going to name it whether Damien agreed or not.

"Her name's Sarah," she breathed out in a shaky voice. "Sarah Carson."

The way Eva pronounced their daughters full name conveyed compassion and love, honesty and acceptance, awareness and support. Eva knew it was risky but she always knew once upon a time Damien had given his heart to Sarah. But she also knew Sarah in her way was a special enough girl to have captivated Damien's love, and for that she wanted her legacy to live on.

Damien stood there staring at Eva whilst Serena occupied herself with a stare off with the doting baby.

After he allowed long, dithering seconds to pass by, Damien replied.

"Okay," he said.

"Okay?" she queried hesitantly.

"Okay," he confirmed.

A cry erupted from Serena's lips. They both turned to look at her, stunned to see tears wrecking her cheery out-take on life.

"I can't - I'm so sorry - the baby is too cute. You even had a fault in our stars moment!" she gushed out resting Sarah lovingly in her crib in the corner of the room.

Pulling the cotton knitted blanket over Sarah Carson, she excused herself from the room, running out.

"Hey Serena, I'm guessing this is a goodbye for now, but damn you really need to get over the fault in our stars phase...that's like, so out," Damien mimicked in Serena's tone.

Eva laughed, wrapping her arms around his neck. "And that's reason two why I'm going to say I fucking love you in a hospital," she murmured leaning in for a kiss.

And that, was how hospitals changed the manner in which Mrs Carson hated them with an undying passion. They brought her daughter into her life, as well as anchoring her husband back to the world. And for that she was thankful.

She no longer associated hospitals with death - that was death's job.
