Chapter One

Let's make one thing clear; I'm not insane.
But I've been in Reap Insane Asylum for all my life. Reap Insane Asylum is exactly what it says it is.... but it also isn't. They have mentally ill people here, yes. But... they also have... special people here.... people with... uncanny, unnatural abilities.
And I'm one of them.
There are three stories in the building. Bottom floor is for the people who need to lose some crazy, or therapy sessions as they are officially called. Top floor is for the people that need to get tested on, experimented on, operated on or begin their training on. And the middle level is the "patients" sleeping quarters, along with the cafeteria.
The operation/testing/experimenting floor is for us Special kids. Like, there's this one kid, who is made out of toxic waste. She disintegrates anything she touches, her name is actually Toxic, too. There's also another kid that can create electricity out of nowhere. They discovered him in a lab, surrounded by scientists. That was his home. And they took him away.
There are far more kids that are Special, including me, I have some sort of mind powers, like, moving things with my mind, reading minds, and mind control, I can also suppress others powers. So, I'm the only one in the entire facility that is immune to Toxic, the radioactive girl. So, we're roommates. She's nice, I think, its a little hard to tell, she shows no emotions when she speaks or in her expressions. I can't read her.
———
I get up from my way too uncomfortable white-yellow bed by the obnoxiously loud alarm emitting from the speakers. Toxic gets up in the radioactive proof bed to my right and throws on specifically-made-for-her radioactive proof gloves.
"Good morning, Violet", She says, with no expression.
"No. It's not." I say, tying my dusty brown hair that's adorned with purple streaks into low braids.
I'm not what you would call traditionally pretty. I'm so pale, I'm almost translucent, my eyes are big and purple, I have really long eyelashes and my feet are big, I'm tall though. Toxic is prettier. She's short. Her eyes are the perfect size and her feet are small.
I sit back on my bed and fiddle with the strings hanging from my shirt, Toxic stands perfectly still by the door, she has great posture and is silent. After half an hour, the intercom comes to life, creating a shriek before a mans voice bursts through the speakers,"Breakfast time, everyone head to the cafeteria." He says, and loudly at that.
Our room door slides open, scraping the wall, causing an unpleasant sound to echo through the metal hallways. Toxic walks out first, followed by me. As we get into the long hallway, covered by steel doors, other kids walk out. Spark comes out of the room in front of ours and we all file into two lines. Girls in one line. Boys in the other. We don't speak until we get to the cafeteria.
As we get into the breakfast line, Spark turns to me, "How are you, on this fine day, Violet?" He asks, sarcasm and venom dripping with each syllable.
"Just peachy," I reply, sarcastically, "I love it here, you know the place where we have no windows, and where most of us have never even seen the Sun, including me in that group."
"Wow. What an attitude," He says, smirking, "Toxic, what about you?"
"I'm fine." Toxic says with no elaboration.
We each grab a grey tray from a stack and start our way down the line. Today's breakfast specialty is stale blueberry muffins with burnt toast. Better than yesterday's breakfast.
Once we get our food, we head for an empty table in the back. Toxic and I sit and Spark sits right across from us. While we're eating, a girl with curly mocha colored hair sits next to Spark. Twitch, my best friend. She was brought here the same day as me, we grew up together. She's a shape shifter. Very short-tempered, very kind when she wants to be.
"Hey," She says, addressing all of us.
"Hi." I smile slightly as Toxic waves.
"Hey, T." Spark greets her.
"I hear that the doctors are finally letting Dark out today." She says, excitedly.
"Really?" I say, trying to hide the excitement bursting through me.
"Did someone miss him?" Twitch says, smiling, and shimmying her shoulders.
"We all did," I say, trying to cover up how much I actually missed the boy, "Right, Spark?"
"Yeah, I missed him," He says, covering up for me.
"Well, I also heard that there are going to be two new Specials today. That's the reason, they're letting Dark out." She says, going to a plain voice.
"Really? New kids? Here?" Toxic says, staring at Twitch.
"Yup, new kids, coming today, during training, the same time Dark gets out," Twitch says.
Twitch is our gossip person, her ears are always open. She has rabbit like hearing and cat-like eyes.
We all finish eating when intercom comes on, the mans voice coming through again, "Insanes' go to your therapy sessions. Specials head to the training room." We get up from the table and head to the training room, getting back into line. Spark right across from us, Toxic in front of me, Twitch behind me.
We go up the stairs, down the hall to the right, and into the big, blue doors at the end of the hall. Two guards stand by it and open it, letting us through. The training room consists of several glass boxes, training dummies, blue and red mats all over the floor, and... Dark!
I push my way through the guards and run to Dark. Spark, Toxic, and Twitch run after me. Once Dark isn't covered up by guards, I run to him, calling his name. He looks over at me and smiles. He has the most beautiful smile. He opens his arms as I proceed closer. I jump into his open arms and hug him tightly, he puts his arms around me and kisses my neck.
"I've missed you," He says, his voice low and husky.
"I've missed you, too," I smile sincerely, unraveling my arms from around him, "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine, now that I'm out and with you," He says, smirking.
Just as I'm about to ask about what happened to him, Spark, Twitch and Toxic come running up and slam into Dark and I. We all fall down. We all laugh, except for Toxic and stand back up.
As we're standing, two guards are standing in front of us, each with a kid I've never seen. Probably the new kids. One kid is a girl with piercing grey eyes. She's staring at us. The other kid is a boy, a little older than me but still shorter than me. He has the scariest red eyes. He keeps his eyes unwavering on the floor like it's the most interesting thing in the world.
"These the new kids?" I ask the guard with the red eyed boy. He nods and both guards push the kids forward, causing the boy to fall.
"Shit," The boy says, standing up.
"Hello", The girl says, looking at us, "I'm Diana, you are?"
"I'm Violet, this is Toxic, that's Spark, Dark and Twitch," I say, gesturing to everyone at their names, "What's your name?" I ask the boy.
"Why the fuck would you want to know?" He says, glaring at me.
He has an attitude. Got it.
"I'd like to know so that when I have to talk to you, I don't have to call you 'Asshole', would you like me to call you that?" He shrugs his shoulders
"Impact. My name's Impact." He says, no expression.
A doctor walks in a few minutes later, wearing gloves, a buttoned lab coat and red hair in a tight bun. Dr. Martha Landheim. I hate her.
"Okay, everyone," She says, booming over our conversation. We all look at her, and stay silent, "Today, we have two new Specials, would you introduce yourselves?"
"Hello, everyone. I'm Diana and I'm sixteen years old. My powers are invisibility and super speed." Diana says, enthusiastically.
"I'm Impact and I'm eighteen. I can create fire out of thin air," Impact says, obviously annoyed by Diana's enthusiasm.
"All right, now that we've met the new recruits, lets start the training. Everyone to their designated areas."
We all head to our areas, Dark and Spark go to a glass box, with rubber floors and rubber lining, Toxic lines up in front of a test dummy, Twitch goes to a mat, and stands next to a doctor, Impact and Diana are getting talked to by Dr. Landheim and I go to a glass box, filled with snakes. I hate snakes. After a little, Diana comes over to the glass box next to mine and Impact goes to where Spark and Dark are.
After we're all to our spots the doctor says, once again, booming over all of us, "Start."
I enter my box, the snakes raise their heads and start to hiss. The door closes behind me.
I press myself against the door, a snake slithers across my foot and I scream, sending ripples through the glass.
Then, just for a second, the world goes red, and when the world seems normal again, all the snakes are dead. Everyone is looking into my box. I get dizzy and before I know it, I'm falling but then the glass door opens and I feel strong arms lift me up, as I'm falling. My ears start to ring and my vision gets fuzzy. Before I go all the way out, I see Dark, hes holding me, talking to me, yelling at someone else.
Then, it's lights out.
