Footsteps were heard on the pavement below as Gracie made her way through the dark, two grocery bags full of food in her arms as she made her way home.
As she passed an alleyway, the felt a hand grab her arm and yank her inside the alleyway. She let out a startled gasp, eyes darting to the person who grabbed her.
It was a young guy, who carried a gun in his fist. She heard the sickening click of the gun as it was pointed at her, making her eyes widen as she began to shake.
"Give me all your money!" the guy demanded with a harsh tone that made Gracie flinch.
"Sir please, this is really embarrassing" She said, looking him directly in the eyes.
"Im serious!" He insists, narrowing his eyes and raising the gun higher for emphasis.
"I know, I'm so embarrassed that I don't have any money to give you" She said, frowning a bit afterward.
"Like I'd believe that, how'd you get those groceries?!" The guy asks harshly, though Gracie saw the gun lower a little.
"... I used up the last of my savings, I just hope it's enough to feed my little brother for the next few weeks" She said, looking down at the ground as tears began to silently roll down her cheek.
The man stared, not knowing what to do or how to react. He looked at the girl, observing her slightly worn and cheap clothing. He glanced at the bags, and sure enough it was filled with cheap affordable food, nothing else.
"What about your parents? Surely they've got something?" He asked, but a little awkwardly.
"They.. They passed away.. Luckily I was old enough to be able to keep my little brother" SHe explained, fiddling with the hem of her shirt.
The man looked at her, searching for any hints of a lie. Upon finding none, he sighed, dropping the gun to his side.
"... I'm so sorry." he said, looking at the girl. "It's just that.. I'm kinda going through the same thing.. Got a little sister to keep in mind, and things have been kinda tough lately" He said, scratching the back of his neck.
The two stood there for a while, before Gracie spoke up. "Even if things get tough, you shouldn't rob people like that.. What if you get caught and put in jail? Ever stop to think what would happen to your little sister?"
The guy was silent for a moment, in thought, before speaking again. "I.. I don't know actually.. I never really thought about it" He said, imagining what would probably happen to his sister.
"I guess it wouldn't be good.." He said, trailing off. Gracie nods, "It would be for the best if you don't turn to robbing people for money" she explained.
The guy chuckled quietly, a slightly embarrassed chuckle, "Yea, I guess... The name's Axel" He said, introducing himself.
"Gracie" The girl said with a smile. "Sooo, could you.. Not mention this to the police?" He asked, scratching at the back of his neck.
"Only if you stop trying to mug people" Gracie said. Axel sighed, "Alright.." He said, looking guiltily down at his gun.
"Hey, um, maybe we can go looking for job's together or something" Gracie suggests, hoping he'd take that alternative instead of the criminal path.
Axel nods, "Yea, we could do that... Um, maybe you'd like to hang out sometime?" he asked with a hopeful look,
"After you just tried to rob me?" Gracie asked, amusement dancing in her eyes as she saw Axel look away in shame. "Sure, why not" She said.
"Really?!" He asked, shocked that she had actually accepted his offer. Gracie nodded, and Axel's face lit up.
"Awesome! Here, let me walk you home" He said, taking a bag from her arms and walking down the street with her, unknowing that this was his newfound path to a better life and a great future.
