outside, it looks great 

all shiny and new

the windows in place

the doors in place too

the steps to the door

all solid and strong

landscaping is done

everything’s where it belongs

I open the door

the knob now in my hand

i push and i push

as hard as I can

I’m finally inside

I reach for a switch

just a string from a bulb

now, ain’t that a bitch

just a dirty old rug

to greet me inside

I walk to the kitchen

can’t believe my eyes

no doors on the cupboards

just plywood on the floor

no fridge, no stove

from the tap, no water will pour

the livingroom’s carpet

looks like a maze

just swatches joined together

the colors leave me in a daze

the furniture is tattered

the windows bare

the fireplace boarded up

I head for the stairs

there are steps missing

every second one

i can see the basement below

definitely not done

the upstairs is cluttered

tools all over the place

the walls are not finished

a total disgrace

the bedrooms are empty

but for sawdust on the floor

no privacy for anyone

not even a door

the master bedroom

is cold and empty

no windows here

I can barely see

the bathroom’s a disaster

shower head is on the floor

the toilet not hooked

no shower curtain or door

there are tools everywhere

nothing is cleaned or swept

the workers are gone

I sink into a dark depth

my beautiful home

now lies in confused array

I have to get out

I simply can’t stay

if this is what is meant

by new and improved

I think I will just sell

I think I will move

I hurry outside

where it looks shiny and new

knowing that inside

it is a disaster true

why did we change

what was comfortable and warm

and create a disaster

a total shit-storm

the ideas were grand

but far to much haste

next time you renovate

have a plan in place
